The Linux movement is expected to reach another milestone next month when Linus Torvalds officially sanctions the long-awaited Linux 2.4 kernel for commercial release. The Linux founder and guardian, who is also an engineer at Transmeta Corp., said the final kernel will be posted in early December.
Linux 2.4 is deemed a major milestone because it incorporates features important to the corporate sector, including enhanced support for symmetric multiprocessing, USB support, and a rewritten networking layer.
[..] Torvalds, for his part, has his own reasons for ensuring that the kernel makes it out the door in December -- or this month, if possible.
"Of course, I'm also expecting my third daughter in late November, so if I can release it before that I'll be happy," he said.
Thanks Nospam voor de link!
