Computers zijn leuk. Als ze tenminste werken, want zonder stroom doet je fantastisch gigaherz-monster helemaal niks. Een tijdelijke oplossing tegen stroomuitval is gelukkig al uitgevonden: de UPS, of beter Uninterruptible Power Supply. Ze hebben vaak echter een nadeel: wil je er 1 die je computer langer dan een kwartier of half uur kan later draaien dan zul je een stuk dieper in de buidel moeten tasten.
Dat kan ook anders dachten ze waarschijnlijk bij Hardware OC terwijl ze naar MacGyver keken: zelf dus bouwen! In dit eerste deel laten ze zien dat je voor "maar" $200-250 een UPS kan bouwen die een gemiddelde pc meer dan een dag kan laten draaien, heel wat meer dan een half uurtje dus. Met een accu, een handvol gadgets en wat technische kennis kom je een heel eind. De electronica voor de huis- tuin- en keukenUPS zal pas in het tweede deel behandeld worden. En voor in de tussentijd:

But until then, I'd buy a cheap $50 power strip with "5 minutes" of runtime and plug your system into that. Just keep this rig nearby and when the power goes out, your data will be saved by the cheapo UPS and all you have to do is unplug from the wall and plug into the inverter then flip a switch.
Then you'll be playing Quake III when everyone else is fumbling for their emergency supply of candles.
I'm going to come right out and say this. If you are a big SCSI fan this is your drive. You will not be disappointed with the DVD-305S. Because of the price others with SCSI/IDE or IDE only systems might be better off going with an IDE DVD-ROM like the AOpen 16x drive I reviewed last month.

Under a complex deal yet to be announced, sources say AMD is sending to software developers computers that run on competitor Transmeta's Crusoe processor and contain a special version of Transmeta's "code-morphing" software. The computers are designed to run a program that simulates AMD's upcoming server chip, called Sledgehammer, the sources said.
The Sledgehammer simulator is crucial to AMD's plans to break into the lucrative server market. With a software simulation of the chip, developers can tweak their programs so they can release products when Sledgehammer emerges commercially in the first half of 2002. AMD will also come out with a version for desktop computers called ClawHammer, the company has said.

Would I recommend this monitor to others? Perhaps. There is no doubt this setup would impress your geek friends. There is almost an aura about the desk with this silver monitor placed atop. It is hard to look at the thin profile and not double take, and after lugging my bulky 19-inch monitor up and down flights of stairs for LAN gaming sessions, there is no doubt if I could afford an LCD monitor I'd get one.
The design of the mouse is brilliant. It is comfortable and it reduces stress to your hands. The shape of the trackball looks like someone pushed the back of the trackball forward. The back slopes down, while the front is more elevated. The design lets you rest your hand on the mouse without having to move more than two fingers to control the ball. Since the ball is oversized, it also adds another level of comfort and has a greater amount of precision. I can easily move the cursor across the screen with small movements with only two fingers. Also in a FPS, it is easier to control your character (by setting the sensitivity all the way up).
