Bij Tüplay kunnen we een preview lezen, afkomstig van Comdex, van de nieuwe Seagate Barracuda 180, een 7200rpm SCSI schijf met een capaciteit van maar liefst 180GB. De Barracuda 180 beschikt over 12 platters van ieder 15GB. Ook de 7,4ms toegangstijd en de sustained transfer rate van 26-47MB/sec zijn niet mis. De vraag is natuurlijk of je er $2195 voor neer wilt tellen.
Although it is amazing that Seagate was able to achieve such a masterpiece of engineering with the Barracuda 180, the wonders of SCSI and IDE RAID kind of spoil the excitement. Even for only $680 you can buy 4 45GB IBM 75GXP drives and have 180GB of space. Maybe slap a Raid 0 SCSI array of 2 Cheetah X15s in there as well, for $900 extra.
[...] The area where I could definitely see appeal for this drive is in the mission-critical, and large-scale server market. The problem there is that those types of customers usually demand the performance benefits only given by a SCSI RAID setup, which would run the Barracuda 180 well into the thousands at a minimum. A year from now, we should be able to grab several of these drives for the current price of just one.
