However what most Pentium IV rant articles miss is the fact that Intel is producing a chip that will lead them towards 2GHz – which they had to do because of limitations on the P6 core in the Pentium III. The Pentium IV needed to make this architectural transition in order for them to compete with the Thunderbird, whose core is already a generation ahead of their Pentium III and can therefore attain higher clock speeds and leave Intel in their proverbial dust. In a sense, they sacrificed the 1.4 and 1.5GHz models so that they could one day reach 1.7, 1.8 and 2GHz.
[...] I want to make sure the Pentium IV gets a fair shakedown. Articles that only address the Pentium IV as a singular processor and ignore its significance in the greater Intel roadmap are at best being shortsighted and at worst being bad journalists with hidden motives. I’m trying to remind people that companies aren’t just selling products in the short term, but have long-term needs.
Bedankt lawaai voor de tip.
