Frank Völkel van Tom's HardWare heeft een vergelijking gemaakt tussen de verschillende processoren van AMD en Intel. Hij heeft hiervoor niet de standraard benchmarkprogramma's gebruikt, maar een MPEG 4 encoder. In deze review zijn zowel budget als mainstream processoren met elkaar vergeleken, waardoor ook het verschil tussen deze processoren nog wat verduidelijkt wordt.

Summing up we can say that the creation of MPEG-4 videos and their playback demands a high-performance CPU. In comparison to the old MPEG-1 format, which allowed even old socket 7 PC systems to playback videos without any frame drops, MPEG-4 is a real challenge for many computers.

AMD's Duron 650 has the best price-to-performance ratio, especially because it can be overclocked to 800 MHz without problems and then even beats Intel's expensive Pentium III/800. Our test results prove this beyond doubt.

At this stage all that remains to be done is to wait until software for MPEG-4 encoding is available which supports the ISSE streaming commands of Intel's processors with a Coppermine core.

Het meest opvallende uit dit overzicht is toch wel dat de Duron beter presteerd dan de Pentium III 600. Ook is de Duron qua prijs/snelheid verhouding het beste, vooral als je rekening houdt met het feit dat deze budget processor een heel stuk sneller was dan de Celeron die in de test was meegnomen en er telkens als slechtste uitkwam. Wat mede aan de 66Mhz FSB ligt.

According to some of our best industry sources, it seems that the Low latency version of DDR-II will be based on EDRAM, and not on VC SDRAM. The child of Enhanced Memory Systems gains momentum and it is not a big surprise. E-DDR II performs, according to independent studies of IBM and the university of Maryland up to 22% better in SpecInt than DDR-II! According to the same studies, E-DDR II performs always better than DDR-II, while Virtual Channel performs worse in certain benchmarks.

The beauty about the EDRAM concept is that it adds very little SRAM and thus die space to the chip, to be more exact only 1.4%!. Those SRAM buffers contain the row data, and the controller can read those buffers instead of the sense amps. While the SRAM buffers are read, the sense amps are free for precharge and refresh operations. In other words, those SRAM buffers can eliminate latencies like the precharge latency.

The SRAM buffer has a latency of 10ns, while a normal DRAM cell has a latency of 20 ns. It is a pity that we did not see any EDRAM on the market, because the 10ns could have provided us with CAS-1 SDRAM...

By the way, I was able to confirm the final specs. This GeForce is going to run at an eager 250MHz core and 64MB 460MHz DDR memory (WOW!). Bij Thresh's FiringSquad is net een review verschenen van de Abit Siluro GeForce2 MX videokaart. Abit bleek bijna exact het nVidia reference design te volgen waardoor de kaart o.a. werd uitgerust met 32MB Hyundai 166MHz SDRAM van 6ns. Met behulp van een bijgeleverd tweakproggie kon dit toch nog naar 185MHz getweaked worden. Het vuurpeleton concludeert dat we hier te maken hebben met een prima kaartje die helaas op het gebied van bijgeleverde hardware monitoring software iets achter blijft op zijn Asus en AOpen concurrenten:

Bij MSXbox.com zijn details gepost van de nVidia GPU die gebruikt zal worden in Microsoft's console. Volgens de 'Manager of Xbox operations' draagt de chip de naam NV2A en zal hij geavanceerder zijn dan de NV20, oftewel de GeForce3. Verder wordt er nogmaal benadrukt dat de chip speciaal wordt ontwikkeld voor de Xbox en dus geen kopie van een PC versie zal zijn. Hieronder het complete bericht:

The Xbox GPU being developed by Nvidia has been called many things: The X-Chip, Xbox GPU, NV25, et al. But what's it officially going to be called and what generation Nvidia card will it match in power? We went to the General Manager of Xbox operations, J Allard, for the answers.

"We're working with Nvidia to develop a graphics chip which is a step beyond the NV20, it's called the NV2A. In early design discussions, we did loosely refer to it as an 'NV25', but decided to change it to NV2A to avoid, not incite confusion. it's a custom chip which is designed especially for the Xbox and some very specific requirements for the console that makes it a non-candidate for a pc card and will be faster than the NV20."

Allard went on further to say, "To my knowledge, Nvidia has not announced details or availability of an nv25 chip for the pc, but given the success of the nv15, you could imagine one pretty easily."

He also explained how this name change is simply to keep people from confusing Nvidia's upcoming chipsets and the NV2A. In no way does it mean the original specifications of the Xbox GPU will be sacrificed. We hope that clears things up.

HardOCP heeft een artikeltje neer gemikt waarin zij de overklokbaarheid van de 1GHz PIII en Athlon hebben vergeleken. De Athlon kwam weinig verassend als beste overklokker uit de test en bereikte een maximale snelheid van 1200MHz. Het boeide hierbij niet of er gebruik werd gemaakt van watercooling of een GlobalWin FOP38 heatsink. De Pentium III kwam niet verder dan 1050MHz, maar dat kwam mogelijk omdat de stabiliteit van het systeem onderuit werd gehaald door de hoge busspeeds:

It seemed voltage and cooling didn't play as much of a factor as we have normally seen in the past. Although cooling did help the Intel part, it wasn't enough to make it stable at 1100MHz. Ditto on the voltage for the P3. The AMD CPU seemed to benefit more from the voltage increase than anything else, and as long as there was good cooling, overclocking it to the max wasn't a problem.

These results can easily be contributed to "luck of the draw" when it comes to CPU's. And certainly Intel has normally ALWAYS had better parts than the unit I have when it comes to overclocking.

Some people are theorizing that after this article, exposing certain deficiencies in higher speed Intel parts, that Intel might just be having a hard time in the high speed race. I actually contribute these bad overclocking scores to a bum ( for overclocking ) CPU.

Op de Duitse site van Tom's Hardware Guide is een handleiding neergezet hoe je een Asus K7V kan ombouwen naar een K7V-T, zodat je er ook een Thunderbird op kan prikken. De benodigdheden zijn 4 SMD-condensatoren van 20 pF, 3 SMD-weerstanden van 4k7 Ohm en een goed geoefende soldeerhand.

Met fotos is duidelijk aangegeven wat er moet gebeuren in de vorm van "voor" en "na" afbeeldingen: onderaan de processorvoet moeten de 4 SMD-condensatoren worden gesoldeerd en tussen de DIP-switch en de DIMM-sockets moeten er weerstanden verwijderd/geplaatst worden.

De vertaalde "conclusie":

Door de installatie van de extra bouwelementen kan na de ombouw iedere processor met Slot-A-interface gebruikt worden en stabiel werken. Wij hebben de modificatie op een Asus K7V voorgedaan en de AMD Athlon Thunderbird met 1000 Mhz gebruikt met het volgende resultaat: terwijl de processor op het moederbord in standaardtoestand bij 1000 MHz zeer instabiel liep en een tegenvallende prestatie liet zien, gaf het moederbord na de ombouw geen enkel probleem meer.

Tevens is het nu mogelijk de CPU in samenspel met een bescheiden spanningsverhoging tot maximaal 1100 MHz over te klokken - mits goed gekoeld. De soldeerwerkzaamheden zouden alleen door geoefende knutselaars uitgevoerd moeten worden, omdat in het bijzonder de plaatsing van de SMD-condensatoren aan de onderzijde van het processorslot een hoge precisie eisen. Anderzijds kan door te grote warmteontwikkeling het moederbord snel beschadigd raken. In ieder geval bespaart onze schakeling de aanschaf van een volledig nieuw moederbord met de KT133 chipset, mits een Slot-A processor wordt ingezet.

In hoeverre een KX133 moederbord met een Slot-A/Socket-A-adapter werkt, hebben we nog niet getest. Denkbaar is een combinatie van een AMD Thunderbird of Duron met een niet meer helemaal nieuw KX133 board. Zo gauw wij met dit thema positieve ervaringen hebben, zullen we deze in een spannend artikel publiceren. Tot dan wensen wij veel succes met het ombouwen en tunen.

De mannen van Sharky Extreme hebben een review geproduceerd over de nieuwe Dell Inspiron notebook. Het geteste exemplaar bij Sharky Extreme was in het bezit van een Pentium III 750, 128MB SDRAM, 14" XGA LCD en een 8MB ATi Rage Mobility. Deze notebook is uitgerust met een fris design, wat ook nog eens lekker licht is. Dit alles maakt het een prima notebookje, en met een prijs van ruim 3000 dollar kreeg ie als titel de Mercedes onder de notebooks toegedicht:

For about $3100 as tested, the Dell Inspiron 4000 provides excellent performance in a tidy and well-designed package. There are lower-priced notebooks from lower-end brands that pack similar performance and features into less-tidy packages that also tend to integrate lower quality components. But we see the Inspiron 4000's primary competition coming from its larger sibling, the Inspiron 5000e.

Overall, we enjoyed using the Dell Inspiron 4000. Its speed does not approach that of a full desktop system, but it still performs quite well in business applications, especially for a notebook. It does not do well in 3D applications, but cutting texture needs to fit within the 8MB of video will boost performance to acceptable levels. It carries a great LCD, has strong battery life, looks good, has plenty of versatility, weighs very little, and has a level of attention-to-detail that makes it the Mercedes of notebooks. If the Inspiron 4000e looks like it meets your needs, we have absolutely no problem recommending it.

Its original purpose was, presumably, to illuminate amplifiers or speakers or what have you in one of those cars whose owners believe that just sounding like a disco is nothing if your vehicle doesn't look like a disco as well.

The fluorescent tube and its power supply are encapsulated for safety in a clear plastic sleeve with black moulded end caps. PcMods have simply added a passthrough connector you can plug into your PC's power supply, and a switch. But then, pcMods aren't asking for a ton of money for their kit, either; it's $US29.99.

[...] I think we can take it as read that this is not a product for everyone. But if you're looking for a way to make your custom computing rig distinctly different, this most certainly is it.

Het geheugengebruik van Windows is nog steeds iets waar veel gebruikers vragen over hebben. Volgens iXBT Labs krijgt de opvolger van de NV15 / GeForce2 een pixel fillrate van 4800Mpix/s. Dit getalletje is een combinatie van de kloksnelheid (300MHz), het aantal pipelines (4) en de hoeveelheid overhead die bespaard wordt door Hidden Surface Removal (besparing faktor ~4). HSR zorgt ervoor dat alleen de dichtsbijzijnde pixel op de z-as wordt gerenderd. Over de officiële naam van de NV20 schrijft iXBT dat nVidia waarschijnlijk blijft doorbouwen op de inmiddels goed ingeburgerde GeForce-merknaam:

As far as the official name of the upcoming NV20 is concerned, we hear that NVIDIA allegedly decided to retain a well-known GeForce brand for its next offspring and to call it GeForce III. And now a few words about 4800Mpixels/sec fillrate. Most of you were pretty skeptical about this number, however, we got more info proving that it is absolutely correct. NV20 will support 300MHz working frequency and will process 4 pixels per clock, so that the fillrate will make 1200Mpixels per second. However, NV20 will feature HSR (Hidden Surface Removal) technology, which implies that the invisible surfaces won’t be textured at all and each pixel will be drawn just once. As a result, if we suppose that the average overdraw coefficient equals 4, we will get 4800Mpixels/sec. As for the T&L unit, its performance is expected to be twice the performance of this unit in GeForce2 GTS.

De reviewer was vrij enthousiast over het bord, hoewel het in de benchmarks niet als allersnelste naar voren kwam, bleken de RAID controller en de goede stabiliteit van het bord dat ruimschoots te compenseren.

So how'd the Chaintech do? Pretty well to sum it all up. On setting the FSB range to 133MHz I had options from 133Mhz in 1MHz increments all the way up to 160MHz. The board allows 1MHz increments for all the FSB range settings which are 66-100MHz, 100-133MHz and 133-160MHz. This will surely help you squeeze the maximum speed out of your CPU. However, the 6AJR4 didn't have any voltage tweaks which would be a welcome addition if Chaintech decides to revise the board. As previously mentioned, we managed to take our 500E all the way up to 150MHz FSB which resulted in 750MHz. The board ran very stable throughout overclocked and non overclocked tests and we can thank the heatsink on the chipset for this. While the 6AJR4 didn't manage to get our 500E as high as some of the i815s, it did take it to the same speed we got out of other 133A motherboards even with their voltage tweaks.

De Inspiron 4000 kan maximaal uitgerust worden met Intel Pentium III 850, 512MB SDRAM, een ATi Rage Mobility 128 videokaart en de gebruikelijke zooi aan connectoren en drives. De goedkoopste Inspiron 4000 kan al meegenomen worden voor 1700 dollar, maar dan ben je niet in het bezit van alle bovenstaande lekkernijen:

AMD heeft afgelopen week twee belangrijke nieuwe contracten met Micron Electronics en Tiny PC binnen gesleept. Micron Electronics is de op twee na grootste PC fabrikant op de Amerikaanse markt en Tiny PC is de grootste PC bouwer in de UK. De deal met Micron houdt in dat Micron Duron-powered PC's gaat verkopen via de retail kanalen van Best Buy:

As deals go, it's a minnow: Micron is to flog Duron-powered PCs in Best Buy electronic retail outlets only. But it is the symbolism that counts - Micron is, after all, America's third biggest direct PC vendor behind Dell and Gateway, so it has the potential to buy lots more chips from Chimpzilla. Rival UK OEM Evesham has seen sales of its systems moving from 75 percent Intel to 75 percent AMD in the space of 18 months.

ON Semiconductor heeft vandaag een press release uitgegeven waarin ze de Power management IC aankondigen. Dit handige chippie is ontworpen om het leven van lithium-ion batterijen te verlengen door het individueel aansturen van de verschillende cellen in de batterij. Handig dus voor in de notebook:

Designed to be placed into a lithium battery pack, the MC33351A is a monolithic battery protection circuit that maximizes cycle life through useful cell capacity and protects the end user from a catastrophic event resulting from an over-voltage or over-current condition. The MC33351A features a cell-balancing feature that allows it to maintain the highest possible power storage level for the overall pack. This cell-balancing feature overcomes the typical situation where each battery cell has a slightly different rate of charge and discharge leading to an unbalanced situation and a reduction in capacity for the entire pack.

"The consumer demand for smaller, compact, lightweight portable electronic equipment has dramatically increased the requirements of battery performance," commented Larry Hayes, new product launch manager for ON Semiconductor's analog business unit. "Each of the popular battery chemistries today such as lithium-polymer, lithium-ion, and lithium-metal, require electronic protection in order to constrain cell operation to within the manufacturers limits. The MC33351A is designed specifically for placement in the battery pack where it can be continuously powered from three lithium cells. That is what distinguishes it from competitive products."

ZDNet heeft wat info gepost over de nieuwe range Sunfire servers, die morgen in New York door Sun aangekondigd worden. De Sunfires zijn gebaseerd op de nieuwe UltraSparc III processor, die in eerste instantie beschikbaar is in kloksnelheden van 600 tot 750MHz. Een 1GHz US3 is nog in ontwikkeling. De Sunfire servers zijn zwaar schaalbaar en kunnen uitgerust worden met 8 tot 24 CPU boards. Elk bord geeft waarschijnlijk plaats aan 2 processors. Verder is alle hardware hot-swappable, zodat je in alle rust dooie processors en brakke HDD's kunt verwisselen terwijl het systeem door blijft trappen:

Another particularly significant feature of the new servers is that they can be partitioned into several domains, each of which is a collaboration of different CPU and I/O (input/output) boards. A system administrator can then select and alter which boards are wanted in each domain, which will all be running separate copies of So-laris.

The domains can each be dynamically reconfigured using the system controller, and all the hardware is hot swappable, meaning the server can continue operating while the hardware is swapped.

This feature is all the more significant as it addresses the workload-balancing problems that have affected some sites using Sun's current high-end server, the E10000 system known as Starfire.

The Register meldt dat de geheugenprijzen afgelopen week een heftige daling hebben gemaakt als gevolg van voorspellingen over tegenvallende verkopen in het vierde kwartaal. Inmiddels bevinden de prijzen zich weer in een stijgende lijn. Dit price monitor van Global Sources laat zien dat de de laagste 128MB DIMM prijs gisteren is gestegen van 101 naar 103 dollar. Omdat de geheugenfabrikant al op hun maximale capaciteit produceren, is het de verwachting dat de prijzen voorlopig blijven stijgen:

The panic selling was mainly due to lower than expected sales forecasts for the fourth quarter, but since many chip manufacturers warned that production is already running at full capacity and there is no space for further increase of the output it's more than likely that the uptrend will continue for some time.

We have reports of strong buying activity in Taiwan by many key European brokers, while most of the European inventories weresold last week. Today, 26 September, DIMM prices are as follows: 64/133 - $47, 128/133 - $93/$95, 256/133 - $210/$215.

Verder kunnen we volgens The Register de komende maand een groot tekort aan Quantum harddrives verwachten. Momenteel zou er al sprake zijn van leveringsproblemen bij de 7200rpm schijven, met name bij de 15GB Fireball LCT.

BXBoards heeft een review gepost van het Asus A7Pro moederplankje, een gemankeerde versie van de A7V die speciaal is bedoeld voor de Britse markt. Het verschil met de duurdere A7V is de afwezigheid van de onboard ATA100 controller, verder is de plank volledig intact en is ook de alom geroemde dipswitch van de partij. Voor tweakers die in het bezit zijn van een ongelockte Thunderbird of Duron, kan dit dus een ideaal plankje zijn. Voor bus-overklokkers heeft de A7Pro minder te bieden: het exemplaar van BXBoards kwam niet voorbij 110MHz FSB:

This is a stunning board for overclockers from Asus! While we've not tested the A7Pro's big brother, the A7V, it looks like all the excellent overclocked stability we heard about have been handed down from father to son. Its also cheaper than the A7V too! The really clincher for this board is the speed - easily the fastest KT133 board we've seen to date, and the multiplier adjustment for unlocked Socket A CPU's is also excellent.

As a bus overclocker, things are not so rosy, with the board loosing stability past 110Mhz. However we don't view this as too critical as bus overclocking stability has proved to be tricky to pull off for many manufacturers, with only Abit and Gigabyte managing to overclock the Front Side Bus, and maintain stability so far.

iXBT Labs schrijft dat Asus een nieuw model met onboard ATA100 controller aan de CUBX serie heeft toegevoegd. De specs van dit CUBX-E mammaplankje zijn afgezien van ATA100 support gelijk aan de normale CUBX, dus BX chipset, 4xDIMM, 6xPCI en 1xISA. Hieronder een nudie van de oude CUBX, die werd geleverd met een extra ATA66 controller van CMD Technologies:

The Offspring heeft het plan om hun nieuwe CD voor de officiële release date in MP3 formaat op het net te zetten, afgeblazen. Het besluit vond plaats onder druk van Sony Music, de platenmaatschappij van The Offspring. In plaats van de volledig downloadbare CD krijgen fans nu de mogelijkheid om twee weken voor de release van het album één trackje neer te tanken:

Jim Guerinot, the band's manager, today said that The Offspring had agreed not to follow through with previously announced plans to release its entire new album, "Conspiracy of One," on the Web prior to its Nov. 14 retail release date.

Instead, the band will allow one song from the album to be available for download two weeks prior to the album's release in stores. Offspring's label, Columbia Records, a division of Sony Music Group, said it was satisfied with the result.

A source close to the situation said a legal battle was averted late Friday when both sides agreed not to pursue lawsuits. Sony told the band earlier this month to cancel the giveaway, but the band refused, the source said.

"We are extremely happy that Sony Music has worked out a solution with The Offspring and its management that supports the integrity of the band's creative idea and enables them to proceed with their promotion," a Columbia Records representative said in a statement.

Arco heeft voor de Comdex in november drie nieuwe IDE RAID produkten aangekondigd. Het eerste produkt is de DupliDisk III, een ATA66/33 RAID controller met een eigen BIOS setup utility, een seriële poort voor remote monitoring en een proggie waarmee een RAID 1 array op de achtergrond herbouwd kan worden. De DupliDisk II kan geleverd worden met de hot-pluggable DupliDisk II RAIDcase, waarmee twee IDE drives 'gehotswapt' kunnen worden. Ik kan me herinneren dat onze server bij Rukspace ook zo'n duplo controller had.

Het tweede nieuwe produkt is de MicroRAID, een compact RAID systeem met twee 2,5" laptop harddisks en een RAID controller. Het geheel past in een 3,5" drive bay. Tenslotte heeft Arco ook nog de MiniRAID aangekondigd. Hiermee kunnen twee hot-pluggable drive bays, een RAID controller en twee 2,5" HDD's in een 5,25" drive bay gemikt worden. De MiniRAID moet vooral zijn toepassing vinden in superlage 1U rackmount cases, die geen plaats bieden voor twee normale 5,25" hot-pluggable drive bays:

News.com meldt dat Fujitsu voor november twee notebooks met de Transmeta Crusoe processor heeft aangekondigd. Dit maakt Fujitsu de zevende fabrikant die Transmeta CPU's in zijn produkten gaat toepassen. De twee nieuwe Crusoe schoothondjes zijn de Fujitsu Biblo Loox S en Look T. De Loox S heeft een gewicht van 1,2Kg en kan volgens Fujitsu 8 uur lang op de accu rondfietsen. De Look T weegt 1,65 kilo en wordt geleverd met een DVD speler:

Fujitsu will release two notebooks containing Crusoe processors from Transmeta in November, the company said today, bringing the total number of companies coming out with Transmeta-based products to seven.

[...] For example, the Fujitsu Biblo Loox S, one of the notebooks coming this fall, will weigh 2.2 pounds and can run for eight hours on a regular battery, according to Fujitsu. The Fujitsu Look T weighs 3.3 pounds but comes with a DVD drive. Both notebooks initially will be marketed in Japan only.

Iomega heeft gisteren de HipZip portable MP3 player aangekondigd. In tegenstelling tot de meeste MP3 players gebruikt de HipZip geen flash geheugen, maar worden de MP3's op removable 'PocketZip' schijfjes geparkeerd. PocketZip is een nieuwe naam voor het gefaalde Clik disk formaat en biedt 40MB aan storage space. De HipZip heeft verder de beschikking over een equalizer, een USB poort en een oplaadbare Lithium batterij met een levensduur van 12 uur. De richtprijs van het apparaatje bedraagt 299 dollar:

Iomega has consistently promoted the 40MB Clik/Pocket Zip as a cheaper alternative to solid state memory. And indeed it is cheaper, but the consumer electronics industry remains convinced that Flash memory its derivatives are the way of the future. They reckon that users will store digital data on cheap PC hard drives, downloading files to a one or two solid state units on an ad hoc basis.

Iomega, on the other hand, believes users want to build collections on removable media. The snag is, Clik/PocketZip remains pricey compared to audio tape or MiniDisc and unless Iomega strikes a deal with a number of major consumer electronics companies, it's simply not going to build up the critical mass any new consumer recording format needs. Even if it does work well with digital music copy protection schemes, another of Iomega's selling points.
