Microsofts nieuwe OS voor thuisgebruikers lijkt een vervelende bug te hebben voor mensen met een ultramoderne pc (lees: processor sneller dan 900MHz). In bepaalde omstandigheden kan het afsluiten van Windows namelijk voor gegevensverlies zorgen.

During PC World Labs' testing of new high-speed systems this week, a vendor alerted PC World to Microsoft's warning of possible disk corruption occurring at shutdown on systems running 933 MHz and faster CPUs (from either Intel or AMD). The problem occurs only in very specific circumstances, apparently involving ATA100 hard disk drives with large physical caches.

According to Microsoft, the very fast systems sometimes power down before the contents of the large drive cache have been completely written to disk. In other words, the system shuts down before the OS can save what you were working on.

Hoewel Microsoft ontkent dat het probleem iets met Windows Me te maken heeft, zijn er donderdag toch patches uitgebracht voor de grote OEMs. Mocht je een van de gelukkigen zijn met een >900MHz systeem wordt je aangeraden de auto-shutdown feature in Windows 98 en Me uit te zetten, of de patch op te zoeken (hoewel ik die niet kon vinden op Microsoft.com).

Basic USB Support
Red Hat Linux 7.0 includes support for USB devices (primarily mouse and keyboard devices, although modules for other device types are included). The usbview graphical tool is also included, and can be used to display the devices present on the Universal Serial Bus.

RH PPP Dialer (rp3) Only PPP Configuration Tool
The PPP configuration tool (known as rp3) is now the only recommended tool for configuring dialup Internet connections based on the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). If you have an ISDN line, the isdn-config tool should be used. If you must use SLIP or CSLIP as your dialup protocol, you should use the netcfg tool.

Op het OC Workbench forum heeft iemand de press release een een nudie gepost van het nieuwe dual FC-PGA moedebord van Abit, de VP6. Het bordje is gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset en heeft dankzij 4 DIMM sloten plaats voor 2GB geheugen. Verder heeft hij onboard ATA/100, RAID, en een 1xAGP 5xPCI layout. ATA/100 and RAID
The VP6 includes the HPT370 controller which adds ATA/100 and RAID support. The ATA/100 interface has a 100 MB/sec transfer rate, thereby maximizing disk performance. RAID 0 (striping), RAID 1 (mirroring), and RAID 0+1 (striping + mirroring) are all supported by the VP6. The RAID 0 array is designed for performance. By using two hard disks, the information can be split evenly between the two, effectively doubling performance. By setting a RAID 1 array, you are automatically backing up all data. RAID 1 is a mirroring setup that writes the data to both hard disks whenever saving to hard disk. RAID 0+1 gives the user the performance of RAID 0 and the security of RAID 1.


SoftMenu™ III

Uwe van Tom's HardWare had blijkbaar het idee dat de gemiddelde bezoeker van Tom's HardWare nog wel wat kon leren over AGP Pro. Daarom heeft hij een klein verhaaltje geschreven over de hoe en wat van deze uitbreiding op het ons aller bekende AGP slot.

The current AGP slot can supply up to 25 W to the graphics card. With the two additional pins, PRSNT1# & PRSNT2# , the AGP Pro cards report its power requirements to the motherboard. An AGP Pro slot can provide a total of 50W or 110W.

Lots Of Power = Lots Of Heat

With so much huge power being consumed the card is naturally generating a lot of heat. Therefore, the AGP Pro graphics card will need the space of the neighbouring PCI slots for cooling. The AGP Pro50 (50W) card requires 1 adjacent unused PCI slot, and the AGP Pro110 (110W) Card requires up to 2 adjacent unused PCI slots.

For the time being, mainstream graphic cards will remain normal AGP cards for several reasons, like cost and a graphics power budget below 25W. Workstation class or high performance motherboards will come with AGP Pro to gain market share in the prestigious high-end market, which will soon bring this beefed up AGP-slot to the mainstream motherboards as well. Finally, once AGP Pro motherboards become more widely available, those graphic cards might also follow into the mainstream market.

Al met al is dit wederom een leuk verhaaltje voor de mensen die wel eens wat willen weten over het verschil tussen AGP en AGP Pro. Het is misschien maar een klein stukje tekst, toch wordt er goed duidelijk gemaakt wat nu het verschil is tussen AGP en AGP Pro. Impulsje was zo attent om ons te voorzien van dit nieuwtje.

Humberto gaf ons een link naar een plaatje op het forum van Overclockers workbench. Het betreft hier een Pentium 4 koeler van ThermalTake (de makers van onder meer de Golden & Chrome Orb).

De bevestigingsmethode is zacht uitgedrukt "onorthodox". Zo te zien gaan de clips niet naar de socket, daarnaast zit de koeler met 2 clips vast zodat je processor niet vanzelf opstijgt. Deze koeler maakt in ieder geval gebruik van een fan direct op de heatsink, wat niet het geval was bij de foto die eerder deze week in een nieuwspost te zien was.

Bij 3D SoundSurge is een interessant artikel verschenen over de nieuwe speakers setjes die we heel binnenkort mogen verwachten van Creative. Bij 3D SoundSurge staat informatie over de FPS1500, FPS1800 en DTT3500 speakers, en info over de eerste twee setjes is nu ook al op de Creative site te vinden.

De FPS1500:
Het FPS1500 speakersetje is de opvolger van de FPS1000 en heeft dezelfde look (goedkoop dus). De subwoofer is wat verbeterd en poept nu 17watt RMS uit. De satellietjes kunnen elk 6watt RMS produceren, en daarnaast zit er bij deze set een handige remote control.

De FPS1800:
De FPS1800 is de buget versie van de FPS2000 en mist de DIN connector (voor een digitale input), en heeft dus ook een andere subwoofer dan de FPS2000. En als last but not least gaat Creative ook nog komen met een opvolger voor de DTT2500, de DTT3500. Deze 5.1 set heeft een optische ingang, een digitale coax ingang en een digitale DIN ingang. De subwoofer bij deze set kan 23watt RMS produceren, de 4 satellietjes kunnen elk 7watt produceren en de center speaker kan 21wattjes aan herrie leveren. Evenals alle andere speakersetjes komt deze set ook met een remote control, maar dan een draadloze.

Kortom: op speakersgebied wordt het bij Creative de komende tijd interessant .

knakworst liet als eerste weten dat AMD voor Athlon en Duron system integrators het 'AMD Assured Motherboard Program' in het leven heeft geroepen. Het programma houdt in dat Athlon en Duron plankjes worden bloot gesteld aan een heftige stabilieits- en compatibiliteitstest, die PC bouwers er van moet verzekeren dat het produkt probleemloos in hun Athlon en Duron configuraties verwerkt kan worden. De test moet opnieuw worden ondergaan als het ontwerp van een bord wordt veranderd, bijvoorbeeld omdat de fabrikant andere compontenten gaat gebruiken. Hier de 100% droge stof uit de press release:

Zoals eerder voorspeld, heeft Intel vandaag twee nieuwe mobile PIII's en een nieuwe mobile Celerons gereleased. De vorige week door The Register genoemde prijzen blijken echter false te zijn: de PIII's hebben een hogere prijs dan verwacht en kosten 722 dollar voor de PIII-850 en 508 dollar voor de PIII-800. De 700MHz mobile Celeron heeft een prijs van 181 dollar:

SiliconValley.com heeft een artikeltje gepost over de geschiedenis van AMD en de rol die opperhoofd en mede-oprichter Jerry Sanders voor AMD heeft betekend. Voor de oprichting van AMD in 1969 werkte Sanders samen met Gordon Moore en Bob Noyce bij Fairchild Semiconductor. De laatste twee heren verlieten Fairchild in 1968 om Intel op te richten. Nadat Intel zich met de komst van de IBM Personal Computer van een glorieuze toekomst had verzekerd, werd AMD in 1982 aangetrokken als tweede bron voor de produktie van x86 processors. In 1987 werd dit out-sourcing contract abrupt beeindigd, waarna een hevige juridische battle ontstond die pas in 1995 tot een vredig einde kwam toen beide partijen een licentie overeenkomst sloten. AMD kreeg hiermee de mogelijkheid om zelf ontwikkelde x86-compatible processors te produceren.

Het eerste design van AMD was de weinig succesvolle K5, die een jaar te laat werd gereleased en het bovendien moest afleggen tegen de 6x86 van Cyrix, op dat moment de populairste 'alternatieve' processor. Meer succes werd bereikt met de K6, een ontwerp dat afkomstig was van het in 1996 door AMD overgenomen NexGen. De K6 leverde AMD weliswaar een redelijk marktaandeel op in de low-end markt, maar kon niet voorkomen dat de verliezen aanzienlijk toenamen door de zware concurrentiestrijd met Intel. Sinds de introductie van de Athlon in 1999 bevindt AMD zich weer een duidelijke opwaartste spiraal en wordt er op bepaalde gebieden zelfs beter gepresteerd dan aartsrivaal Intel:

The intense rivalry between the two firms started when AMD's second-source agreement began falling apart. This agreement, which gave AMD rights to copy the microcode -- the core instruction software -- used in Intel's processors allowed AMD to develop clones of Intel chips. In 1987, Intel abruptly stopped providing AMD with information as it had been doing in its original agreement. After efforts at arbitration failed, AMD eventually sued Intel, leading to the longest, most contentious legal battle in Silicon Valley history.

Bij Hardwareinfo.net hebben ze eens een aantal optische muizen, trackballs en toetsenborden getest van Microsoft en Logitech. Er wordt onderandere aandacht geschonken een de Logitech i-feel Mouseman Optical, Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical, Microsoft Trackball Explorer en de Logitech Cordless Trackman Wheel. Over het algemeen stuk voor stuk goede producten die wel realtief een wat zwaardere aanslag op de portomonnee plegen . Lees hier het complete verhaal.

Alle producten die in deze review besproken zijn, werken naar behoren. De optische muis van Logitech ligt werkelijk heerlijk in de hand. Nadeel is dat hij alleen voor rechtshandig gebruik is gemaakt. Mensen die met links de muis bedienen of een kleiner budget ter beschikking hebben, kunnen beter een ‘standaard’ optische muis, zoals de Microsoft Wheelmouse Optical, nemen.

Ben je altijd een muis gewend en overweeg je over te stappen op een trackball, neem dan eerst de tijd om deze een tijdje te testen bij een vriend of kennis. Het gebruik van hiervan zal in het begin namelijk een beetje tegenvallen, maar al snel wennen. Als de muis regelmatig gebruikt wordt bij een presentatie, dan kan de Cordless Trackman Wheel van Logitech een uitkomst zijn. Wil je vooral een snelle en precieze trackball met daarnaast ook veel knoppen die elke hun eigen functie kunnen hebben, dan is de MS Trackman Explorer een uitstekende keuze.

Voor de toetsenborden geldt hetzelfde als de trackballs. Gebruik je het toetsenbord op een dusdanige manier dat draadgebonden een last is, dan kun je het beste een Logitech Cordless toetsenbord aanschaffen. Is dit voor jou niet het geval, maar wil je wel een goed functionerend toetsenbord dat bovendien voorzien is van een reeks extra toetsen voor multimedia en internet toepassingen, dan is het MS Internet Keyboard Pro een perfecte keuze.

Hardware One heeft als eerste een review online geparkeerd van de nieuwe Videologic Sonic Fury geluidskaart. De Sonic Fury zal gaan concurreren met de SoundBlaster Live Player 1024 en is gebaseerd op de Cirrus Logic Crystal 4630 SoundFusion DSP audio processor met ondersteuning voor DirectSound3D, A3D 1.x en EAX. De tester was erg te spreken over geluidskwaliteit en de uitgebreide mogelijkheden voor geluidstweaking :

I have to say that even with the first generation drivers, the card shows a lot of promise.

It works amazingly well in playing back DVD movies, and the VersaJack is a really nifty device and can satisfy whatever connection choices you may have. When set to send out digital AC3 signals, and teamed with my Cambridge Soundworks Desktop Theatre DTT 2500, DVD movies really came alive. I still go back and rewatch the action sequences in Men In Black and Armageddon, just for kicks!

With games, the ability to handle DirectSound3D, A3D 1.x and EAX 1/2 means that you should never have to worry about which sound API the game supports. I found the EAX implementation on the Fury to be slightly different from the Live’s, but this is something that I suspect future driver revisions could address. To be fair to Videologic, even Creative’s EAX implementation between Liveware 1.0 and Liveware 2.0 was different, and this was coming from the same manufacturer.

I think one of the biggest selling points of this soundcard is the DSP chip that powers it. With subsequent driver revisions, it is always possible to tweak the functions, just like what Creative have done, and quite successfully too. With older cards like the Vortex 2, you were pretty much stuck with whatever feature sets were hardwired by the designers, and almost every new feature that you add subsequently will almost certainly be carried out by the CPU.

Ook gisteren werd de 2M blokjes niet gehaald... jammer, dat moet ook in weekenden kunnen lukken! Wel positief was dat de voorsprong op AnandTech weer wat groter was, zo'n 670K blokjes. Hoe groter die voorsprong, hoe eerder DPC overall de nummer 1 positie behaalt! Dus, join DPC (iets wat gisteren door 10 anderen ook werd gedaan waardoor het aantal leden steeg tot 3069) en zet zoveel mogelijk koetjes uit!

In Thresh's FiringSquad's low-end system videocard guide wordt onderzocht wat de prestatiewinst is als je je inmiddels bijna obsolete geworden low-end systeem uitrust met een nieuwe (high-end) videokaart. De algemene conclusie is vrij voorspelbaar: een GeForce2 MX geeft bv. je 2 jaar oude Celly 450A bak een flinke performance boost voor relatief weinig poen. Als je graag Quaked in 1280x1024 of hoger heeft upgraden naar een snellere CPU sowieso weinig zin omdat uiteraard de videokaart dan de limiterende factor wordt:

First off, let me say that upgrading your CPU usually helps more than upgrading the video card. Cost-wise and performance-wise the CPU/MB upgrade would be the much better choice. Depending on your motherboard and RAM all you may have to do is swap out your CPU.
For others, it may be a bit harder, getting rid of the motherboard, RAM, and CPU takes a lot more of your time and money.

If we toss out all resolutions higher than 1024x748 in the Quake3 tests it becomes very obvious what a person with a low-end CPU should purchase. The GeForce2 MX keeps pace with its bigger brothers and some of the high-end competition. Bringing in the 3DMark tests, we see the same result. The GeForce2 MX does take hits, but at low resolutions the card keeps up very well.

Both the Celeron 450A and P3 600 machines benefit greatly from a GeForce2 MX. The GeForce2 MX costs next to nil, tapping your wallet for a mere $100, this card performs right up there with the big boys - ATI Radeon, GeForce DDR, and GeForce2. The margin of performance it has over the TNT2 Ultra and Voodoo3 is to great to make either of those cards a contender. The GeForce2 MX may be a low cost solution, but it sure is a good one.

Twee van de vier patentaanvragen zijn namelijk afgewezen vanwege het feit dat een bedrijf uit Florida de naam Xbox al gedeponeerd heeft. Als er voor 8 november geen oplossing is gevonden door beide partijen zal het Trademark Trial and Appeal Board uitspraak doen .

Volgens het Britse tijdschrift MCV heeft de weigering van de US Patent and Trademark Office te maken met het bestaan van Xbox Technologies. Het technologische bedrijf uit Coconut Grove in Florida heeft de naam Xbox al gedeponeerd, waardoor Microsoft een serieus probleem heeft.

Wanneer Microsoft en Xbox Technologies er voor 8 november onderling niet uitkomen, komt de zaak voor. De Trademark Trial and Appeal Board zal in dat geval uitspraak moeten doen over het conflict.

Ik lees bij AMD Zone dat AMD de K6-2E+ en K6-IIIE+ embedded processors heeft geïntroduceerd. Beide types maken gebruik van een 0.18micron procédé en zijn per direct leverbaar in standaard 2.0V en low power versies met PowerNow! technologie. De K6-2E+ komt in versies van 350, 400 en 450MHz, de K6-IIIE+ gaat tot en met 550MHz. Meer info vind je in deze press release, waarvan hieronder een paar quotes:

"They offer the performance, compatibility and stability of supply that AMD customers have come to expect from the E86(tm) family of embedded processors. Lower power and organic BGA packaging address specific needs of embedded system designers."

Sharky Extreme wist een vroege sample in handen te krijgen van het Tyan Trinity A762 moederbord gebaseerd op AMD's 760 chipset. In deze preview werd het systeem uitgerust met een 1.1GHz Athlon en 128MB PC1600 DDR SDRAM en vergeleken met een Asus A7V systeem met CAS2 PC133 SDRAM. Vanwege de gebruikelijke issues met beta borden (zijn release staat pas gepland voor november) wist het DDR platform niet altijd als winnaar uit de bus te komen. Echter, in de Quake III 'Torture' benchmark werd toch een winst geboekt van zo'n 28 procent ten opzichte van het PC133 platform! Alvast een indicatie van de vooruitgang die we mogen verwachten in zwaar grafisch complexe omstandigheden . Hieronder heb je de conclusie:

So as the benchmarks show, the DDR1600 memory in the beta Tyan Trinity A762 motherboard provides a significant though not massive speed boost over PC133 CAS-2 SDR SDRAM in our ASUS A7V, at least with the Athlon 1.1GHz processor. And remember, this is a pre-release motherboard, so Tyan expects there will be more speed gains before the board is released. Simply going from AGP 1x to AGP 4x with fast-writes should boost performance significantly.

So are we bowled over by DDR's performance? No, we are not. But are we happy with it? Absolutely. DDR SDRAM currently costs only slightly more than quality SDR SDRAM and provides significantly more performance. From what we can see in this early look, DDR memory is a good thing.
