With the EAX vs. A3D war at its conclusion, Creative stands as the clear victor (complete with the IP of Aureal). While we may not see EAX 3.0 anytime soon, the latest version of the venerable SoundBlaster Live!, the Platinum 5.1, does mark Creative's full board support for 5.1 audio for both games and DVD playback. With a multitude of connection options to various speaker sets and external decoder, you are assured of finding some way of getting 5.1 audio out of this sound card (assuming you have enough speakers), be it digital, analog or through Creative's proprietary digital connections for Cambridge Soundworks speakers.
Also, the new LiveDrive IR shows that Creative is serious about providing many audio connection options to those who buy their top of the line card. The addition of an infrared controller is a nice bonus and makes for lounging around the computer room convenient, but not everyone will find it useful all the time. The software bundle is top notch including some very recent, high-quality games (please let this signal the end of ReVolt being packaged with hardware), and the many demos of semi-pro music creation software shows the flexiblity of the PC platform. Creative continues to improve their software's quality and feature list with each new release of their LiveWare. Throw in the fact that the SBLive is consistently one of the lowest in terms of CPU utilization and the number of games supporting EAX, and it is clear why many gamers choose the SoundBlaster Live.
