The Register meldt dat AMD de oorspronkelijk voor 5 september geplande prijsverlaging vooruit heeft geschoven naar 14 augustus. Volgens de bronnen van The Reg zal de prijs van de 1GHz Athlon op de 14de waarschijnlijk onder de 500 dollar zakken. Verder worden er geen concrete prijzen genoemd:

Sources close to AMD's plans have confirmed that we can expect big price drops on its microprocessors on the 14th of August. The cuts were originally slated for the end of this month, as revealed here some weeks back.

Ook Netscape is nu de bezitter van een flinke bug, waarvan ze de fix meteen mee kunnen sturen met de gesloopte versie van Smartdownload. Op SecurityFocus valt te lezen dat je op een webpage een Java-applet kan zetten en daarmee zonder dat er iets gevraagd wordt de harddisk gelezen en gedeeld kan worden.

Een expert uit Silicon Valley heeft een demonstratiepagina geschreven genaamd "Brown Orifice" (zeer origineel) wat wél eerst iets vraagt: welke dir er geshared mag worden. Op deze site kan je het uitproberen.

Microsoft heeft commentaar gegeven op de beschuldigingen van de EU waarover ik donderdag al melding maakte. De computergigant is teleurgesteld in het onderzoek en vindt dat Sun gewoon jaloers is omdat hun producten minder goed verkopen. Microsoft is behoorlijk zeker van zijn gelijk. Volgens een woordvoerder zal Microsoft zeker de rechtzaak winnen als de commissie eenmaal alle informatie op een rijtje heeft:

Teleurgesteld - dat is Microsoft over de officiële klacht die de Europese Commissie (EC) afgelopen week tegen de computergigant deed uitgaan.

'Allemaal het resultaat van laagbijdegrondse aantijgingen van een jaloerse concurrent', stelt Microsoft. De EC onderzoekt nu inmiddels ruim een jaar de gedragingen van Microsoft in de servermarkt.

Het misbruik vloeit volgens de Europese Unie (EU) voort uit het feit dat Microsoft serverproducenten niet genoeg inzicht geeft in de code van zijn Windows client-besturingssysteem. Daardoor kunnen die producenten hun systemen niet volledig compatibel maken met Windows.

Lariekoek, aldus Microsoft. "Suns klacht is gebaseerd op het verlangen toegang te krijgen tot onze technologische bedrijfsgeheimen", aldus John Frank van Microsofts rechtsteam in een verklaring. "We geloven niet dat de wet Microsoft verplicht geheimen met concurrenten te delen."

Microsoft doet bij monde van Frank de hele affaire af als 'slechtgehumeurd kissebissen' van Sun. "We zijn teleurgesteld over Suns voortgaande pogingen om overheidsinterventie te gebruiken om iets te doen aan het feit dat onze producten gewoon beter presteren in de markt dan de producten van Sun, en dat voor eenderde van de kosten."

Venator schrijft: "Deze "Fong Kai" kast doet het behoorlijk goed bij de mensen van Ars Technica. Buiten de 300 Watt klassevoeding, de verwisselbare hd-cage en de hele goede interne mogelijkheden voor een perfecte airflow is ook de prijs niet erg hoog en het design erg geslaagd. Hieronder de conclusie:

I'll need to deduct half a point for giving me only 4 external bays total. Even the smaller 603 has 5, and while it might not be a big issue for you, it rendered the case useless to me. Another half point needs to come off because of the cheesy clear plastic bezel. I neither like the way it looks, nor its utter uselessness, but the real grudge I have is against the effort it takes to open. If I want a work-out, I'll go to the Do Jang, thanks. In terms of other real gripes, I have none. Well, I do have one: why is this case $30 more than the 603? Perhaps it's a matter of supply and demand. For the casual user, you might get more wiz-bang features in another case at this price range, but in terms of a stable, solid case for workstation or server use, this is downright inexpensive for what you're getting. Believe it or not, high-torque HD support is not all that easy to come by for $100.

The excellent cooling means that this case lost no points to that category, which in the end places us at a firm 9. Where would I rate it in relation to its brother, the 603? If you don't mind the issues that I deducted points over, I'd take this over the 603. It's spacious and a pleasure to work in.

IBM heeft in hun research lab een Linux powered polshorloge gebouwd. Het apparaatje kan draadloos communiceren met PC's en ontvangt SMS messages. IBM heeft geen plannen om het Linux horloge op de markt te brengen, maar beschouwd 't puur als knutselobject voor de demonstratie van de mogelijkheden van Embedded Linux:

In a research lab IBM runs Linux on a wrist-watch. The clock can communicate wirelessly with PCS or Handys and " compressed emails " and SMS well-behaved short messages to display. IBM does not plan however to bring the device on the market; it concerns a research project, which is to show that Embedded Linux is suitable also for smallest devices.

Overclockers workbench heeft een review gemaakt van de Abit BX133-Raid plank. Zoals de naam suggereert heeft deze plank een BX chipset, onboard Raid en ondersteuning voor 133MHz FSB CPU's. Het Raid gedeelte wordt verzorgd door de HPT370 chipset die ook ATA-100 hardeschijven aankan. De layout is ook erg relaxed, 1xAGP, 5xPCI, 1xISA, 3xDIMM en een nette plaatsing van condensatoren rond de socket:

Apparently, many people still have the notion that the 440BX chipset is the way to go due to the stability of the system and the maturity of the chipset, whereas the i815/e boards are fledglings in the market and have yet to prove their worth to the masses. ABIT certainly thinks so because the 440BX chipset was never meant to be run at 133mhz but, as overclockers are, we managed to find out that at 133mhz, the system and its components are able to run at that speed. The only problem that the 440BX encountered was the fact that when it was released more than 2 years ago, AGP graphics cards were not inclined to run at such high speeds (i.e. If FSB is at 133mhz, AGP clock will be 2/3 = 89mhz) due to their intolerance of it (89mhz). But now, as it turned out, most if not all of the newer graphics card can run at 89mhz or even higher, thus the obstacle of 133mhz FSB is overcomed.[break]En de conclusie:[/break]This is one impressive motherboard, considering the fact that it is still performing at the top of the game for the past 2 over years. Everyone had the notion of the 440BX being thrown away with the announcement of the i815/e boards but behold, the ABIT BX133-RAID motherboard! The design and implementation of features, coupled with a tried and true chipset is a very irresistible combination indeed. ATA-100 and RAID support on a motherboard really does have an appeal to it. Certifying the 440BX chipset as a 133mhz platform is also a great step forward for an aging chipset and doing away with Slot One and replacing it with a FC-PGA socket helps to lower the cost to the end-user, making the board more desirable. ABIT must have done a great job in designing a board on the 440BX chipset and kudos to them, they deserve it for the ABIT BX133-RAID deserves an award!

Enige tijd geleden berichtten wij dat er een standaard feature in Netscape's Smartdownload zit die info over downloads doorstuurt naar Netscape zelf. Nu meldt de Volkskrant dat AOL, dat Netscape 2 jaar geleden had overgenomen, de feature eruit laat slopen.

Het vermoeden bestaat zelfs dat er een uniek identificatienummer meegestuurd wordt met de downloadinfo zodat er een profiel van de betreffende surfer opgesteld kan worden. Netscape zelf houdt vol dat het om een support-feature gaat.

De onthulling van een vermeende verklikker in Netscape Communicator heeft vier Amerikanen aangezet tot een proces tegen AOL. Zij eisen voor alle gebruikers een schadevergoeding van minimaal tienduizend dollar. Een nederlaag in de rechtszaal zou America Online een flinke strop bezorgen. De toegangsbieder heeft wereldwijd 23 miljoen abonnees. De browser (een programma om webpagina's mee te bekijken) wordt ook gratis verspreid via internet.

Phantone meldt dat Tom's Hardware Guide een review klaar heeft liggen over de Asus V7700 Deluxe. Deze kaart heeft naast een GeForce2 chip met 32 MB Ram een stapeltje leuke extra's: Video-in, TV-out en een VR brilletje. De prijs voor dit alles is wel redelijk hoog maar volgens THG is deze kaart toch de enige optie als je 'smoking snelle graphics' wilt gecombineerd met Video-in en TV-out :

News.com meldt dat Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) en United Microelectronics samples van de Transmeta Crusoe processor hebben geproduceerd. Tot op heden wordt de Crusoe exclusief door IBM geproduceerd. Dit heeft als voordeel dat Transmeta gebruik kan maken van IBM's state-of-the-art koper-interconnect productie technologie, maar heeft ook als belangrijk nadeel dat IBM hogere kosten in rekening brengt dan TSMC en UMC.

Lage productiekosten zijn uitermate belangrijk voor Transmeta als zij de concurrentie aan willen gaan met Intel, AMD en National Semiconductor, die allen wel hun eigen broodjes bakken. Productie bij IBM beschermd Transmeta tevens tegen juridische acties van Intel, omdat IBM de beschikking heeft over uitgebreide cross-licensing deals met Intel:

"Transmeta wanted to work with IBM to make sure there were no questions about legal issues with Intel," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst at The Linley Group. "Over time, I think they will look to other foundries."

While there are a number of factors that would seem to encourage a TSMC-Transmeta alliance, one of the crucial ones is real estate. When they arrive later this year, Transmeta's Crusoe processors will compete against processors from Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and National Semiconductor to be picked by major computer manufacturers as the brain inside Web pads, ultra-thin notebooks and other consumer electronics devices.

Kryotech reseller Sys Technology heeft in een press release aangekondigd dat er deze maand wordt begonnen met de beperkte levering van supergekoelde 1,25GHz Thunderbird systemen. In oktober volgt volume productie van 1,5GHz Kryotechs. De productie van 1GHz SuperG systemen is inmiddels om begrijpelijke redenen gestaakt:

There is now some light at the end of the tunnel. Sys expects to be offering limited availability of 1.25GHz systems in August and volume production of 1.5GHz systems in October. Exact dates are still to be determined and final pricing has not been set. We will post additional information on our web site (www.sys.com) as it becomes available.”

Webwereld schrijft dat Name Space momenteel verwoede pogingen doet om geld bij investeerders los te peuteren. Daartoe worden 36.000 banken en verzekeraars met een voorstel benanderd. Name Space rekent op een kapitaalinjectie van 50 miljoen euro, die zij wil gebruiken om internationele activiteiten op te zetten, zoals het beheer van nieuwe toplevel-domeinen. Ondertussen houdt de Stichting Internet Domein Registratie vast aan de eerdere bepaling dat Name Space voor 11 augustus 1,4 miljoen gulden moet cashen, anders raakt Name Space ook de resterende 28.000 onbetaalde domeinnamen kwijt die zij nog onder haar naam geregistreerd heeft:

"Onze advocaten zijn nog aan het stoeien met de SIDN", zo stelt Graafland. "Zoals bekend hebben we zware problemen met de middeleeuwse manier waarop we worden benaderd door deze feodale organisatie." Name Space wordt volgens hem ten onrechte als dissident behandeld. De stichting doet er alles aan om NameSpace in een kwaad daglicht te stellen en aan de schandpaal te nagelen, aldus de directeur. Bij Trainwrecker is een review te vinden van de Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32A. Deze IDE CD-fikker kan naast het schrijven op 12 speed, het herschrijven op 10 speed en het lezen op 32 speed beroep doen op BurnProof technologie, iets wat buffer underrun errors tot het verleden laat behoren. Deze feature blijkt bijzonder goed te werken, om deze reden en om de hoge schrijf snelheden is de reviewer erg tevreden met dit apparaat :

Plextor has claimed, thanks to the PlexWriter's BURN-Proof feature, that you can peform some simple tasks on you machine while burning a CD. Plextor mentions "sending email, or Web surfing," which aren't exactly high CPU utilitization tasks, but this is a far cry from "shut down all programs that may be running in the background" to help prevent buffer underruns. We copied approximately 500 MB of data over a network, while surfing the web and downloading an extremely large file (Window 2000 SP1), without a hitch. The fact that we connect to the Internet via our LAN, and a large amount of data was moving across the network while we recorded from it, had no ill effect.

As surfing the Web and downloading files are not the most resource-intensive processes, we decided to up the ante. We did a CD to CD data tranfer while running SYSmark2000, an application-based benchmark, and downloading a 16 MB file. Once again, the recording session was error-free. Keep in mind that we were looking for trouble, and it was remarkable that we didn't find any. You'll probably want to go a little easier on your drive, and firing up Quake3 while burning a CD is an awful idea. Clearly, however, with BURN-Proof enabled, you can get away with a lot more than you could in the recent past.

De Italiaanse internetprovider Tiscali wil graag fuseren met het ons bekende Nederlandse World Online, zo meldt Nu.nl. Tiscali meldt dat ze de 3,5 miljard gulden die WOL nog in kas heeft goed kunnen gebruiken. Aangezien de twee bedrijven volgens analisten veel gemeen hebben, zien ze een fusie wel zitten. Misschien dat het aandeel WOL dan nu eindelijk eens iets zal stijgen:

De Italiaanse internetprovider Tiscali overweegt te fuseren met de Nederlandse internetprovider World Online, meldt persbureau Reuters. Door zo'n fusie ontstaat Europa's op-één-na grootste internetprovider.

Analisten zien een fusie tussen de twee bedrijven wel zitten. Het duo heeft volgens de analisten in strategisch opzicht veel gemeen. World Online wil zich evenals Tiscali meer gaan richten op het bouwen van een Europees netwerk met ondermeer telecomlicenties. Bovendien wil World Online afstand nemen van het maken van 'webcontent'.

Het Nederlandse World Online ging in maart naar de beurs. Maar de beursgang, die begeleid werd door de banken ABN Amro en Goldman Sachs, flopte. Een aandeel kostte bij de introductie 43 euro. Vrijdag sloot het op 11 euro.

VIA heeft een press release het web op gezet waarmee we lekker worden gemaakt over hun HDIT (High-Bandwidth Differential Interconnect) architectuur voor de allernieuwste generatie VIA Apollo chipsets. De HDIT architectuur bestaat uit een north- en southbridge die zijn verbonden door middel van een V-Link bus die 512MB's per seconde kan verwerken. De northbridge heeft ondersteuning voor DDR266 geheugen, AGP 4x en 4 CPU’s. De southbridge is ook niet mis, er zitten o.a. dual ATA-100 controllers op en ook een LPC bus (wat dat ook moge zijn). Andere indrukwekkende getallen zijn: 4.2GB/sec memory bandwith en 2.1GB/sec tussen de northbridge en IO poorten met behulp van 2 optionele 64-bit HDIT PCI-X chips.

Zoals je ziet zijn de specs prima (zelfs goed, erg goed) en als de performance evengoed als de specs wordt dan lijkt me dit een zeer interessante chipset. Als de prijs ook nog een beetje gunstig wordt (jammer genoeg is de doelgroep de high-end desktop, workstation en server markt, iets wat geen goed teken is…) dan lijkt me dit een goede chipset om een single, of een dual systeempje rond te bouwen :

VIA's HDIT Architecture provides a cost-effective yet highly flexible baseline platform that allows System OEMs to integrate such advanced features as a DDR266 memory interface, AGP4X, and VIA's new 512MB per second V-Link bus to a highly-integrated HDIT South Bridge in mainstream desktop and mobile PC designs. To ensure the scalability that System OEMs require for high-end multi-processor workstation and server designs, the memory interface and AGP port in the HDIT North Bridge can also be configured in HDIT Mode to double or even quadruple memory data bandwidth to rates as high as 4.2GB per second.

VIA's HDIT Architecture VIA's HDIT Architecture features a high-performance HDIT North Bridge chip with a high-speed DDR266 memory controller interface, AGP 4X, and support for up to four processors. For high-end workstation and server applications, System OEMs can configure the memory interface in HDIT mode and utilize it in conjunction with HDIT Memory Buffers to boost memory bandwidth to rates of up to 4.2GB per second with a 128-bit data path. The data transfer rate from the HDIT North Bridge to the AGP port and I/O expansion slots can also be increased to speeds of up to 2.1GB per second by configuring the system in HDIT mode and integrating two additional 64-bit HDIT PCI-X companion chips.

To ensure a balanced system architecture, VIA is coupling its HDIT North Bridge chip with a new enhanced legacy-free HDIT South Bridge featuring a wide range of integrated functions including dual ATA-100 EIDE controllers, 8-channel HW accelerated Audio and HSP modem, six port USB, integrated networking, and an LPC (Low Pin Count) bus running at 66MHz.

To overcome the bandwidth limitations of the 32-bit, 33MHz PCI bus, the HDIT North Bridge and HDIT South Bridge are connected with the new high-speed V-Link bus that runs in 66MHz or 133MHz modes and delivers data transfer rates of up to 512MB per second.

"The HDIT V-Link is a high efficiency, low latency bus structure with configurable bandwidth ranges to satisfy different segment system I/O requirements," said Eric Chang, Director of Product Marketing for VIA Technologies, Inc. "The 32-bit, 33MHz PCI bus with a peak bandwidth of 133MB/S, is no longer sufficient as the primary bus between the North Bridge and South Bridge and system expansion for advanced PC systems, which are already being equipped with 1GHz processors. Any high-performance system with leading DRAM technology such as DDR SDRAM would be handicapped when paired with a 32-bit/33MHz PCI South Bridge. The system would not be able to fully benefit from advanced DDR SDRAM because the PCI bus has now become the system bottleneck."

The first VIA HDIT chipset is targeted for sampling early in the first half of 2001, and will be implemented for high-end desktop, workstation, and server applications that support leading processors from both Intel and AMD.

De luitjes bij Thresh's Firingsquad hebben een vergelijking weten te schrijven tussen Windows 98 en de opvolger daarvan, Windows Millennium. Na een lading benchmarks komen ze tot de conclusie dat je voor de snelheid niet hoeft te upgraden, meer dan 1 fps verschil is er niet. Qua interface en gebruikers-vriendelijkheid zijn er wel een aantal dingen verbeterd maar echte redenen om voor de winkel te gaan slapen als Windows ME uitkomt zijn er niet :

For all intents and purposes, Win ME's performance is right on par with that of Windows 98SE. In both general and gaming performance, we can see that Windows ME doesn't do anything to improve the speed or performance of your computer, but it didn't hurt anything either. This shows that performance is not going to be a reason to upgrade to Windows ME.

Most likely, the main reason to upgrade will be for the GUI enhancements and added utilities. Windows ME comes a very long way in improving the user interface to make functions a little bit cleaner and more intuitive. The System Restore point system should go a long way in helping end users correct software installation problems themselves, without having to resort to expensive professional help.

[...] Personally, after playing around with the new Windows Millennium Edition for a few days, I don't feel that there are any particularly good reasons to upgrade aside from satisfying my desire to always have the newest version of software. The updated GUI, which more mostly matches the Windows 2000 GUI, is a benefit for me, but not a necessity. I use Windows 2000 for work. The new GUI makes it a little more comfortable when I need to transition to ME for gaming or other needs (mostly gaming, I won't lie). While the new look does not do very much for improving the performance of the operating system, the changes do keep Windows ME feeling modern.

Via JC kwam ik bij dit interessantje PDF docje over de Compaq Alpha en de problemen die optreden bij het ontwikkelen van >1GHz processors. In het PDFje worden wat vage specs genoemd voor de Alpha 21364 (EV7) en 21464 (EV8). De 21364 krijgt volgens dit PDFje een geïntegreerde netwerk interface en Rambus memory controller. De grootte van de L2 cache bedraagt 1,75MB, 256KB meer dan tot dusver bekend was. De 21464 wordt helemaal een wild beest: 250 miljoen transistors, een stroomverbruik van 150Watt en vier SMT cores! Ter vergelijking: de eerste microprocessor, de Intel 4004 uit 1971, bestond uit 2300 transistors en opereerde op een kloksnelheid van 108KHz :

Volgens de informatie die Paul DeMone eerder in zijn artikel over 64-bit processors publiceerde, staat de release van de 21464 gepland voor 2002 en zal de chip door IBM geproduceerd worden:

Beyond EV68 is an ambitious MPU design for high-end servers called the EV7 or 21364. The EV7 is based on the EV6x processor core but adds a large (1.5 Mbyte) on-chip L2 cache, on-chip memory controller/interface, and four sets of bidirectional interprocessor communication links. It is predicted to ship in systems next year. Compaq and IBM recently disclosed that IBM Microelectronics will start manufacturing Alpha processors early next year in IBM’s CMOS8S and possibly their CMOS8S2 silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process. At the 1999 Microprocessor Forum Compaq disclosed that the formidable eight issue wide, simultaneous multithreading (SMT) EV8 fourth generation Alpha processor core would be manufactured starting in 2002 in a 0.125 um, copper, low k dielectric SOI compatible process. Those specifications strongly suggest that the manufacturing relationship with IBM will be even more intimate in the future.

Naast de Abit KT7-RAID review heeft BXBoards vandaag ook een review van het Gigabyte GA-7ZM plankje gepost. Dit KT133 plankje heeft een weinig opwindende MicroATX layout met 3 PCI slots en 3 DIMM sockets. Afgezien van de droge specs voldoet de GA-7ZM aan de verwachtingen. Het plankje functioneerde zeer stabiel en kon zelfs tot 117MHz FSB overgeklokt worden:

While Gigabyte do not aim for the overclocking market (although recent boards show this policy may be changing), this board is stunningly stable when bus overclocking, coming very close in overclocked stability to the Abit K7T RAID board. The Duron 650 was more than happy to run stable at 6.5 x 117 on this mainboard, something other boards targeted towards the overclocking community have failed to do with stability. Gigabyte's previous SlotA Athlon board also exhibited excellent overclocked stability so while Gigabyte do not promote this feature, its clear that Gigabyte know "something" about obtaining bus overclocked stability that many of their manufacturing peers have so far failed to grasp.

With the excellent overclocked stability, and decent gaming performance the GA-7ZM appeals, but in its micro-ATX form factor is a real let down here. I'd love to see Gigabyte rework this design into a 6/1/1 PCI/ISA/AGP combo. In the meantime the GA-7ZM does a good job, but only really recommended for micro-ATX users.

Johan de Gelas van Ace's Hardware heeft een review gepost van de VIA Cyrix III 550. In de review wordt de tiepmiepen-status van deze processor nogmaals bevestigd. Zolang je niet op de foute gedachte komt om de Cyrix III voor FPU intensieve applicaties te gebruiken, is de processor nog redelijk vooruit te branden. Ga er echter niet mee Quaken, Photoshoppen of MP3'tjes op encoden.

De baggerslechte FPU performance van de Cyrix III (op 550MHz net zo traag als een Pentium 200MMX) blijkt veroorzaakt te worden door de meer dan gehalveerde kloksnelheid van de floating point unit. Omdat de FPU unit op de volle kloksnelheid niet stabiel was heeft het Centaur team moeten besluiten deze omlaag te klokken. Een Cyrix III 550 heeft als gevolg van deze operatie een 225MHz FPU!

The Cyrix III core is not really option right now, not even for a budget PC. The cheapest Celeron or K6-2 will do any desktop PC task better for a few bucks more. The core itself is not bad at all, though. If the Centaur team can solve the problem that forced them to clock the FPU at half speed, the Cyrix III will be a very attractive CPU for mobile computers and Internet Appliances.

Additionally, it's worth noting that the CPU business is not really important for VIA right now, so the Centaur team still has time to tune and tweak. It will be interesting to see if the "keep it simple" philosophy will result in a one day competitive CPU. The potential is there, and the Samuel II might be the answer.

BXBoards heeft een review gepost van de Abit KT7-RAID, een KT133 moederplankje met 6 PCI slots, 3 DIMM slots en met als belangrijkste opvallende feature de aanwezigheid van een HighPoint HPT370 IDE RAID controller. Overklokkers zullen erg blij zijn met de 84 unieke busspeeds die de KT7 tussen 100 en 183MHz heeft te bieden. De settings boven 125MHz laten wellicht je plasser groeien, maar zijn verder in praktische zin absoluut waardeloos. BXBoards bereikte overigens een erg nette 120MHz. Het door BXB geteste exemplaar beschikte over een actief gekoelde northbridge. Het is nog niet zeker of de chipset ventilator ook op de uiteindelijke produktie borden aanwezig zal zijn:

Abit are by no means first to market here with this board, but in marketing speak they've a "unique selling point" with this board in the form of the Highpoint HPT370 controller. Its worth noting that the K7T comes in two flavours, the plain vanilla K7T is not equipped with the Highpoint chip. I was a big fan of the ATA/100 RAID feature of tha Abit KA7-100 (although it was difficult to set-up correctly!!), but this time around the quirks have been ironed out of the Highpoint BIOS and Abit are fully supporting the RAID feature.

[...] In conclusion, the K7T-RAID is an awesome overclocking board, and its got enough stability and speed to have a wider appeal past the traditional overclocking market who usually buy Abit boards.

Reading this you might think that I am biased towards .net, but I actually like the Tao Group enough to consider working there. The main advantages it has to offer are Java and a hosting OS. Since Java is already portable, the Elate system becomes a fancy JIT compiler on desktop systems. Being able to distribute a Java app to customers as a single 2MB download is a big advantage over existing methods which require a 10+MB additional overhead assuming you cannot count on the user to have your JVM already installed. Also since the .NET platform will not be available for Linux, Mac, Sun, SGI, etc. it's binary portability doesn't offer much to desktop developers. For embedded systems, Elate offers a smaller footprint than WindowsCE. Developers wanting to develop Java apps for WindowsCE are pretty much out of luck unless it's a monster of a microprocessor.

Initially I was hesitant to use the Amiga SDK for anything because of their royalty requirement, but now that this restriction has been removed I look forward to using it to develop some cross platform applications. Currently Amiga only offers a linux version, even though the Tao Group has ported the "OS" to many other platforms.

Finally, I do not know what to expect from Amiga, since almost of the work for their current offering was done by the Tao Group.
