Een paar dagen geleden heeft de rechtbank van Amsterdam besloten dat SIB (Name Space) ruim een half miljoen gulden moet betalen aan de Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland plus de kosten van de rechtzaak. Daarnaast heeft SIB nog tot vrijdag de tijd om de rekening te betalen voor zo'n 28.000 domeinnamen die sinds 1 april zijn geregistreerd:

De president van de rechtbank Amsterdam heeft op 3 augustus 2000 in kort geding bepaald dat SIB aan SIDN een bedrag van fl. 532.609,63 (factuur en incassokosten), vermeerderd met de wettelijke rente dient te voldoen. Ook is SIB veroordeeld in de kosten van het geding.

Daarnaast staat er nog een factuur van 5 juli 2000 open. Deze factuur heeft voornamelijk betrekking op de domeinnamen die door SIB vanaf 1 april 2000 zijn geregistreerd voor Name Space C.V. Tenzij uiterlijk 11 augustus wordt betaald, zal t.a.v. de ca. 28.000 domeinnamen overeenkomstig de eerder gevolgde procedure worden gehandeld.

John Carmack heeft in zijn speech op QuakeCon wat details vrijgegeven over Doom III, het spel dat momenteel bij id Software in ontwikkeling is. Doom III krijgt weer erg brute graphics, maar richt zich in tegenstelling tot Quake III vooral op single player gameplay. Het spel zal waarschijnlijk geport worden naar Linux, MacOS X en de X-Box. Just got out of the Carmack talk and as most people were hoping he gave out a few more details on the next Doom game. I'll do a quick summary before I forget stuff and give you guys a more complete set of things by Monday. Here ya go:

• Doom will be going back to DLLs, and will be using C++ (with the exception of the rendering code) instead of C
• Carmack feels the visual 'wow factor' of the new Doom will be a greater jump than it was from the recent jumps between Quake/Quake2/Quake3. (Lots of neeto new effects), but it will also focus on actual gameplay instead of just that 'wow factor'
• Single player is the absolute focus, and Carmack feels it will be their best single player experience to date.
• The game and editor/tools are now combined. You'll be able to simply type doom.exe -editor for example (Or maybe even an in-game toggle)
• Spending more time on the sound code / game code with the new programmers on the team.
• There probably wont be much discussion on the gameplay specifics since what made Doom so big is always a subject of arguments. (No talking about the game itself)
• All of the Doom code is being written from scratch. Rendering etc.
• A port to XBox is likely, Linux is likely (although it will take some work) and Mac will be OSX only.
• It comes out in 2 weeks. (Maybe 3, maybe 1.5)

6pm update: I just realized I left out one important detail. Carmack mentioned off-handedly that there will be a test release of the new Doom.

De Haagsche Courant schrijft dat pissige Casema abonnees onder aanvoering van actiegroep Wigg dreigen om naar de rechter te stappen, nu Casema afwijkt van eerdere beloftes over korting op het abonnee geld. Volgens de vrijdag gepubliceerde kortingsregeling zou driekwart van de Haagsche internetverbinding aan de normen voldoen, terwijl deze normen in de praktijk geen garantie voor een goede verbinding blijken te zijn:

Uit een inventarisatie van ruim 150 abonnees blijkt dat de nieuwe Casema-norm geen garantie geeft voor een goede verbinding. Zo zijn er diverse abonnees die geen korting krijgen, maar toch de afgelopen twee dagen geen verbinding met internet konden maken. Uit de inventarisatie blijkt ook dat sommige abonnees twee tegenstrijdige brieven hebben gehad en anderen helemaal geen brief kregen. Nyns van de actiegroep Wigg is woedend. "Zij bepalen zelf hun kwaliteitsnormen en nu blijkt dat de klanten er niets mee opschieten".

Bij ZDTV.com is een interessant artikel te vinden over door bacteriën geproduceerde nanokristallen. In oude tunnels van mijnen leven 2 soorten bacteriën die een slijmerig goedje produceren waarin kleine ijzerkristallen te vinden zijn. Als deze manier om ijzer te produceren gerepliceerd en gecontroleerd kan dat heel goed gebruikt worden voor het produceren van hardeschijven:

They believe that, as the bacteria oxidized the iron -- the same chemical reaction that causes rust to form -- the charged iron particles either attached themselves to slimy stalks of bacteria or jiggled around in the water until they clumped up.

When they clumped, they rotated and arranged themselves into a three-dimensional lattice, Banfield's team said.

Crystals typically grow atom by atom. But a way to grow slabs of crystals could be very useful for scientists looking for new ways to store information.

EETimes.com heeft ook een leuk artikel over bacteriën en PC's: namelijk over bacteriën die kunnen werken als levende transistoren. Het is al een beetje oud nieuws, maar nog niet op t.net geweest en nog steeds interessant .

XBox365.com heeft de details gepost van de Xbox developer kit, die afgelopen week door Microsoft bij game developers werd neer gedropt. Uit het artikel blijkt dat het Xbox operating system gebaseerd zal zijn op een gemankeerde versie van Windows 2000. Deze Win2k variant is tot het absolute minimum afgeslankt en wordt tijdens de boot procedure vanuit ROM in het geheugen geladen. Opmerkelijk is dat de Xbox wél support heeft voor CD, DVD, CD-RW en DVD-R, maar niet voor CD-R's. De traditionele Windows GUI wordt vervangen door 'Dashboard'. Hier wat info over de game launch sequence:

Once the system software has determined that the media contains an Xbox game, it loads the game developer bitmaps, publisher bitmaps, license bitmaps, and so on. These will be stored in a predetermined location on the DVD, will contain no executable code, and will be identified with a predefined schema. The system software will display these bitmaps sequentially, after the boot graphic and sound have appeared, while the game itself is being streamed from the DVD into RAM. As the game image is streamed into memory, the system software checks the signatures of each section of the image on the fly.

Once the game image is in memory, the system software will start the game. At this point, the kernel is acting in conjunction with the Xbox Title Libraries to provide all of the basic services for the game itself.

The Xbox game image format is not compatible with other executable systems, such as Windows 2000 executable format. The Xbox game image must be loaded by the Xbox system software application, loading utilities directly into RAM in 64-megabyte (MB) blocks. Unlike standard Windows 2000 applications, there are no dynamic-link library (DLL) loads, no fixups, and so on.

HlpDsK deed nog een andere ontdekking bij Akiba's PC Watch, namelijk deze nudies van een 1GHz FC-PGA Pentium III. De core van deze GigaPIII's blijkt net iets kleiner te zijn dan de core van oudere PIII's. Uit de wazige japanse tekst begrijp ik dat de oude PIII-600 core een afmeting van 9,5 bij 11mm heeft. De 1GHz FC-PGA PIII meet 8,5 bij 10,5mm.

De verkleining houdt waarschijnlijk verband met deze nieuwposting van 20 juni, waarin door Electronic Buyer's News wordt gemeld dat Intel een nieuwe Pentium III stepping met 5% kleinere die-size heeft ontwikkeld.

In ieder geval goed om te zien dat de 1GHz PIII's nu eindelijk op de japanse retail markt zijn verschenen.
