Electic Tech heeft een review gepost van revisie F van de Tyan Tiger 133A dual Slot 1 moederplank met VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset, 6xPCI, 1xISA, AGP en 4xDIMM. Enige tijd geleden werd al een eerdere revisie van dit bord door Electic getest en toen waren de resultaten zwaar teleurstellend: de plank was met geen mogelijkheid stabiel te krijgen. Deze problemen lijken opgelost te zijn met de nieuwe Rev. F, die wel aan de verwachtingen voldoet:

The Tiger133 is a major contendor in the current workstation market because of its low cost and high-end feature list. The board does have its limitations, however, as a result of this low cost. There are no jumpers or BIOS controls for front-side-bus manipulation, as well as tight fan space - both of these may deter overclockers. The CPU performance is also average, though the memory performance is respectable. The AGP port can use some help, however, since a 4-speed port is essential for a modern day workstation platform.

The stability of the revision F board has been extremely trustworthy. Crashes are virtually non-existant (at least motherboard related crashes), and Tyan's tech support is devoted to continued development of BIOS updates for the board, as well as all of their other boards. In short, the board is definitely above average, though not an industry standard-setter.

MS NBC meldt dat het Amerikaanse Ministerie van Defensie een nieuwe supercomputer van IBM heeft aangeschaft. De machine heeft de codenaam 'Blue Wave' en is een RS/6000 SP met 1336 Power3 processors, 1,336 Terabyte RAM en 17 Terabyte harddisk space. Blue Wave is 170 keer zo snel als zijn voorganger 'Deep Blue' en zal vooral ingezet worden voor maritiem onderzoek, zoals het voorspellen van gevaarlijke stormen:

The board's expansion slot configuration is listed as 6 PCI, 1 ISA, and 1 AGP. Mounting hole locations are not problematic like other boards, as the access to these locations are rather open and not cluttered. At the rear of the board, there are those standard connections, of course done in accordance to the PC99 specifications. In fact, DDR SDRAM is not expected to receive much attention at IDF. The updated Intel memory road map to be unveiled at IDF won't show a DDR chipset until mid-2001, when the first IA-32 Foster processor for the enterprise server market is unveiled, according to sources.

Onlangs werd al bekend dat nVidia met de hulp van Elsa videokaarten zal maken voor high-end workstations. Bij Tom's Hardware Guide is een preview te vinden van Abit's onlangs aangekondigde Magnum 5.1 Stereo Multimedia Package bestaande uit een AU-10 geluidskaart en een Arcadia SP50 5.1 speakerset met een 85W rms subwoofer. Hieronder wat impressies over zijn geluidskwaliteit:

Our preview took place in an unfavorable listening environment - a large open lab with poor acoustics. Nevertheless, the SP-50 provided good, clean bass, although perhaps a step short of the guttural sensation that much more expensive high-fi's can deliver. I was able to raise the volume to levels that were probably annoying everyone else on the floor, but did not encounter noticeable distortion from either the subwoofer or any of the other five speakers. The tiny egg-shaped satellites provided good sound, but the midrange was a little thin coming from the tiny 2", four ohm paper cones -- part of this minor deficiency is to be blamed on the extremely poor and atypical listening environment. With the exception of the Klipsch ProMedia v.2-400, which is not a 5.1 system, few PC audio rigs can approach the sonic quality of the SP-50. For a person looking to convert his computer into a cheap but good quality Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound system for viewing DVDs and the like, the ABIT Arcadia SP-50 will be an appealing solution. It is also one of the few products available that can fill this niche. For gamers looking ahead to 5.1 audio format games, the SP-50 is also attractive, although the AU-10 soundcard relies heavily on the CPU for positional audio API's which could bog down some games.

At a shipping weight of around 60 pounds, the ABIT Arcadia SP-50 provides heavyweight 5.1 surround sound experience for the relatively low price of $279 U.S.

3dfx heeft net de PCI versie van haar Voodoo5 5500 kaart gereleased, vandaar vandaag de stormvloed aan reviews ervan. Matthew Witheiler van AnandTech schrijft dat low-end systemen er een leuke kaart aan hebben, alhoewel de snelheidswinst er minimaal zal zijn omdat de Voodoo5 vrij CPU intensief bleek. Mensen met een P3-550 of hoger die per ongeluk een i810 plank kochten en dus niet over een AGP gleuf beschikken zijn wel enigzins gered

One nice aspect of running the Voodoo5 5500 in a lower end system is the fact that enabling FSAA will result in almost no performance loss. Since the video card is not able to use all its power with FSAA off in an older system due to a CPU limitation, enabling FSAA is really the only way to get the full power out of the Voodoo5 5500 PCI in an older system. The frame rate may be as low as before you upgraded to the $300 card, but the image quality will be much better.

The Voodoo5 5500 is a blessing for many users out there with higher end CPUs on an i810 motherboard. For others with lower end processors, the Voodoo5 5500 really only makes sense if FSAA is desired. Otherwise, stick with your current video card (or perhaps upgrade to a Voodoo3 3000) and look for a CPU upgrade first. With a fast PCI video card option finally out. 3dfx will win a place in even more systems.

Bij Planet Hardware staat een review van de Gigabyte GA-60XM7E i815E moederplank met 4xDIMM, 6xPCI, 1xAGP, 1xCNR en onboard ATA/100. Voor overklokkers levert GigaByte het proggie Soft Tune III mee waarmee je de bussnelheid vanuit Windows kunt tweaken. Helaas moet je voor voltage aanpassingen nog steeds met jumpers werken. Over het algemeen een zeer aardig bordje maar Asus blijft met haar CUSL2 een betere keus:

The GA-60XM7E is a very well rounded motherboard, serving up some fairly quality features that should make this board rather attractive to most consumers. Overall board layout and documentation is excellent, while the bundled software utilities for installing newer BIOS upgrades and overclocking are straight forward and easy to use. The only problem is that these utilities are only available to Win9x/Win2k users, leaving Linux users with no way to overclock their systems.

The final conclusion on this board is that while it does do many things right, it isn't up to the level of the perfection represented in the Asus CUSL2. That board really impressed us, with Asus going the extra mile and including just about every feature you can incorporate onto motherboards. If, for some reason, you are in the market for a i815e board and you can't find an Asus CUSL2 or prefer the Gigabyte brand, this board is solid enough to get the job done.

Windows-guru Paul Thurrott van WinInformant wist vandaag te melden dat de volgende versie van Microsoft Office gisteren bij de beta-testers gearriveerd is. Het programma onder de voorlopige codenaam Office 10 zal uiteraard weer nog nauwer met internet verbonden zijn, maar precieze details zijn nog niet aanwezig. Binnenkort waarschijnlijk uitgebreide informatie:

I received word from several testers last night that the beta test for the next version of Microsoft Office--code-named Office 10--has begun. Office 10 is a stepping stone to a future Office.NET product and as such it will offer a number of .NET features, such as Smart Links and a new Digital Dashboard portal. But Office 10 will be functionally similar to Office 2000, rather than a completely new product.

Dankzij Grijns kwamen we te weten dat er nog steeds tekenen van leven worden gesignaleerd in de Finse iglo van Bitboys Oy. Gisteren werd bekend gemaakt dat Conventum Limited een bedrag van 3,7 miljoen euro heeft geïnvesteerd in Bitboys Oy. Conventum krijgt hiermee een belang van 8,3% in het bedrijf. Blijkbaar zijn de Bitboys meer dan gebakken lucht, nu alleen nog hopen dat er ooit werkend silicon op de markt wordt gebracht. Volgens de huidige planning moeten de XBA (Xtreme Bandwidth Architecture) 3D accelerators van Bitboys in de tweede helft van 2001 in produktie gaan. De release dates van Bitboys zijn nu eenmaal moving targets, die helaas sneller in de tijd lijken te bewegen dan de tijd voort schrijdt...

Helsinki, Finland - August 4, 2000 - Conventum Oyj has today invested approximately EUR 3.7 million in Bitboys Oy in form of a Convertible Bond. The conversion of the Bond will give Conventum no less than 8.3% of Bitboys Oy share capital and votes.

Bitboys will use the capital infusion to fund the completion of a new generation 3D graphics processor and product launch. The product, which incorporates XBA (Xtreme Bandwidth Architecture) developed by Bitboys, allows substantial increases in memory bandwidth and overall 3D graphics processor performance. XBA-enabled products will deliver more than three times the memory bandwidth of today's leading solutions.

Bitboys 3D graphics processors are planned to be incorporated on graphics accelerator add-in boards for upgrading existing PC's and be integrated in fully configured systems from various PC manufacturers. The processors will be in volume production in the second half of 2001. This new architecture may in the future be used in the graphics solutions of the Internet appliance, game console and mobile computing markets.

The founders of Bitboys have developed 3D processor architectures since 1991. Majority of Bitboys is owned by its executives and personnel of the company. Company has a manufacturing partnership with Infineon Technologies AG.
