Nvidia Corp. is growing from its graphics-IC roots, as Microsoft Corp.'s upcoming X-Box game console and developments in the audio and high-end workstation markets present new opportunities.
Nvidia last week entered the graphics-board market, partnering with ELSA AG of Germany to offer cards for workstations. Nvidia will use card technology from ELSA to design its own graphics boards, which both will market. Nvidia, Santa Clara, Calif., will choose a contractor to handle manufacturing.
While a spokesman said the company has no plans to enter the highly competitive consumer graphics-card market, he didn't rule out the possibility that Nvidia could offer more highly integrated boards in the future. Indeed, as it seeks to diversify its product base, the company is actively working on projects to integrate more functions into its graphics chips.
Nvidia clearly is aiming to parlay its Microsoft design win to move its technology into new areas, according to Richard Doherty, an analyst at The Envisioneering Group, Seaford, N.Y. “They're using X-Box as a linchpin to extend their reach into the PC market and to expand into other new applications,” Doherty said. The Nvidia spokesman said the company's trend toward integration is merely matching its competitors in the industry.
“We see the CPU vendors adding graphics and north-bridge functions, and it's only natural that we'd explore similar integration with our chip to compete with them,” he said. Nvidia denied industry reports published last week that the company is planning to develop its own PC core-logic chipset.
The Nvidia spokesman said the company has no plans for such a chipset, and was taking the opposite approach by integrating the core-logic functions into a new graphics processor.
