Satellite subwoofer systems were designed for aesthetics. Bose continues to make a fortune with very sharp looking speaker systems. Go into an audiophile shop and you will see towering speakers, not mini satellites. The reason for this is simple, the small drivers in the satellites are not the best at reproducing the midrange of vocals and the integration between the satellite and subwoofer is not always ideal. That said, today's sub sat systems sound much better than those of the past.
The biggest issue with sub sats on your desktop is the integration of the satellites and subwoofer. These speakers are often placed very close to your seating position, and sound coming from under your desk at your feet can be easily localized. Another characteristic of sub sat systems is that they sound better as you turn up the volume. This is a result of the satellites and subwoofer becoming better integrated at higher volumes. At the low volumes used for listening to ON24 news reports or background music, the satellites will do most of the work.
The Abit SP-50 really shines in movies when you can sit back from your screen and throttle up the volume. The satellites were able to play to very high sound pressures without excessive distortion or rattling.[break]Een kleine teleurstelling was de subwoofer. Wat overigens niets afdeed aan de goede geluidskwaliteit.[/break]Abit's massive subwoofer can be best described has having more bark than bite. Just by looking at the physical volume controls of the subwoofer, you would expect to be able to create some seismic disturbances through your city block. Unfortunately, the Abit subwoofer, while formidable, doesn't quite match its physical presence.
One could argue that the amplifier and all the power supply equipment was housed in the subwoofer to defend its size, but other manufacturers have managed to squeeze the same functionality into a smaller space.
