Bij Ome Tom zijn ze er eens goed voor gaan zitten toen ze de beschikking kregen over een SiS 648 referentieplankje voor een review. De SiS 648 chipset is een nieuw wapen dat in het strijdgewoel rond de Pentium 4 mee gaat doen. Deze chipset bestaat uit twee delen die onderling met elkaar communiceren via een MuTIOL 1G® verbinding met één GB/s bandbreedte. Het verder aanwezige kruit bestaat ondermeer uit AGP 8x, USB 2.0 en ATA 133 ondersteuning. Ook geïntegreerd in de chipset zijn een firewire controller, 10/100 Mbit Lan en zeskanaals audio. Als geheim wapen wordt de ondersteuning voor DDR400 geheugen ingezet.
De tegenstanders die Ome Tom uitgekozen heeft voor de strijd zijn een drietal door Intel getrainde chipsets, namelijk de i850E (RDRAM), i845E en i845G. De twee laatsten met DDR SDRAM ondersteuning. Ondersteuning voor DDR400 geheugen zullen de Intel chipsets nog moeten missen, volgens de plannen komt dat aan het eind van dit jaar. VIA is op dit moment nog druk bezig met de P4X400 chipset, maar het aanwezige testexemplaar wilde niet stabiel werken met DDR400 geheugen. Hoe deze strijd zal aflopen kun je het beste zelf nalezen, maar iets verklappen we alvast: SiS is met de 648 chipset goed voorbereid:
The only real competition to expect for the SiS 648 is the Intel 845G, which is already very fast with DDR333 memory. Also, insiders are saying that SiS will soon be offering its own Rambus chipset for P4. Here, the question is whether this chipset will be able to surpass the performance of the factory-restrained Intel 850E

I'm not one to say that any particular Pocket PC device has a huge advantage over any other, but my initial reaction to the Toshiba e740 is that the HP iPaq has been put to shame in more ways than one. The Toshiba e740 might just prove to be the best Pocket PC device on the market right now, but I have to emphasize I've only had this thing for 18 hours now. Forget the possibility that you could purchase OSX off the shelf and run it on your PC. This will never happen (except for a demo CD for promotional purposes, maybe). Apple would do the same 'tricks' they did for PPC to make sure that OSX only runs on exact hardware they sell. They will modify BIOSes of both cards and motherboards to make sure that OSX would only run on the specific Apple hardware (while it would be able to run other x86-based OSes like Linux and Windows (which might be a good strategy), while other x86 hardware and PCs won't be able to run OSX).

For home users, a big addition to Windows Media Player 9 is the ability to copy DVD movies to disk. It is unclear whether version 9 will also be able to create DVD movies, however in early January Microsoft licensed DVD recording technology from Sonic and has begun pushing Windows Media-enabled DVD players with hardware partners. 
At the present moment, an upgrade to Windows XP SP1 from Windows XP with no SP installation will not give any problems or errors about an invalid CD-Key on a corporate version of Windows XP. This is because the new algorithm feature has been switched off in SP1 upgrades. To get to see this new feature, you would have to slipstream SP1 into the Windows XP installation media and setup Windows. Once you've reached the CD-key, no current Corporate Windows XP key (none of the 75 that we've tried) will work, as they are all invalid. Even if a corporate key is managed to be found, the chances of it working when SP1 final comes out are slim to none, as Microsoft is rumored to still be working on the algorithm for SP1 for Corporate customers.
