VIA Hardware kreeg tijdens een rondleiding in de MSI fabrieken te China het nieuwe 760MP moederbord te zien dat MSI momenteel in ontwikkeling heeft. Het bord heeft de naam K7D Master en beschikt over vier DIMM slots, een AGP Pro gleuf, één CNR slotje en vijf PCI slots, waarvan twee 64-bits. Onboard video ontbreekt, maar een geïntegreerde ethernet controller is wél aanwezig. De plank krijgt volgens VIA Hardware een aanzienlijk lagere prijs dan de Tyan Thunder K7, die in Nederland bijna 1900 gulden kost:

Well I am back in Taiwan after three days in China. I have some more information on MSI's dual AMD board. I saw the board again today and actually have a spec sheet on it. The boards name will be K7D Master and will feature four memory slots, one AGP Pro, one CNR, two PCI 64, three PCI 32, and onboard LAN. The board is supposedly going to cost much less then the Tyan board, probably in the $200 range.

JC kreeg van een goed ingelicht persoon meer details over het dual Socket A mobo van MSI. Volgens de bron van JC is het plankje volgende week te zien op de Computex Taiwan. De productie begint eind deze maand en vanaf juli moet de K7D Master verkrijgbaar zijn. Op de eerste dag van de Computex mogen we naar alle waarschijnlijkheid de release van de 760MP, 1,4GHz Thunderbird, Duron 950 en 1,2GHz Athlon MP verwachten. Thanks Stunter voor de link.

MSI heeft vandaag een press release online gezet over het MS-6367 moederbord. Dit moederbord is gebaseerd op de nForce chipset die bestaat uit IGP en MCP (fancy namen voor north- en southbridge). De MS-6367 biedt maximaal ondersteuning aan 1,5GB DDR geheugen en is in het bezit van 3 DIMM sloten.

Het interessants voor de performancefreaks is echter alleen de eerste twee sloten te vullen waardoor het mogelijk wordt om gebruik te maken van nVidia’s twinbank architectuur. Hiermee kan een bandbreedte van 4,2GB/sec gecreëerd worden. Hoewel de press release er niks over vermeld lijkt het me waarschijnlijk dat je hiervoor minstens geheugenmodules moet gebruiken die even groot zijn.

De nForce is in het bezit van een soort geïntegreerde GeForce2 MX als onboard video die als er gebruik gemaakt wordt van dual channel DDR geheugen wel leuke prestaties neer kan zetten. Voor onboard video dus zeker niet slecht. Verder is er ook onboard audio aanwezig. Het moederbord is trouwens uitgerust met 1 AGP, 1 CNR er 3 PCI sloten:

Bij HardOCP is een review verschenen over het AMD760 mamaplankje van Epox, de 8K7A+. Deze plank is uitgerust met 1 AGP, 6 PCI en 2 DDR DIMM sloten. Verder is hij uitgerust met onboard audio en RAID mogelijkheden. Qua prestaties is de plank zonder twijfel een winnaar, maar er zijn ook wat mindere kanten. Zo is stelt de kwaliteit van de handleiding niet veel voor, zijn er veel jumpers en waren er problemen met RAID in combinatie met SiSoft Sandra. Maar over het algemeen genomen zeker geen slechte plank:

This board is easily in the top of its class, and on performance alone. . an obvious winner. EPoX, and AMD do not disappoint us. Hammering out the differences in the manual, and straightening out the "details" will put this board in a league of it's own.

Remember the boxing analogy I used at the beginning of the review?? We talked about "one hit wonders" and whether or not EPoX could follow up the 8KTA3 with a decent board?? Keeping with my boxing theme here, I think this has been like watching a title fight, where the Champ does come out swinging, and yes. . . retains the title, but it sure wasn't pretty. Little set backs here and there, kept the fight from being a "All time great", but it is definitely one in the WIN column for the Champ.

Kyle van HardOCP heeft een review online gezet over de Vantec 6035D heatsink. Deze heatsink is volledig gemaakt van koper en is standaard uitgerust met een 6800rpm fan. Het design van de heatsink is niet opvalled, gewoon een koperen basis waarop 34 plaatjes koper zijn ‘geplakt’. De prestaties van de heatsink zijn goed te noemen, hij blijft net één graad achter bij de beste koeler, de Thermoengine. Zijn werk doet hij dus goed, maar in het clipping mechanisme heeft Kyle niet veel vertrouwen:

My only beef with this heatsink is the clipping mechanism. While it can be operated with no tools, and did fine in our testing, I would not suggest that anyone use this heatsink that moves their case around often. Yes, you LANners know who I am talking about. The pressure that the clip exerted did not leave me feeling confident about it staying on under stresses like a trip in the car. Moving it to the other side of the room would not seem to pose a problem though. While it is much easier to use than the Global Win clip, it seems about as stable though.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this Vantec 6035D comes equipped with its own high CFM fan where as the ThermoEngine does not. You are looking at dropping extra cash on it for the fan upgrade if you want the ThermoEngine the way we have tested it here. With that said, it is pretty obvious that the Vantec 6035D is the best STOCK cooler we have tested even besting the all copper Global Win CAK38 but only by one degree F which is a very small margin. No doubt too that there is a margin of error in our testing that is very possibly a degree or more + or -. Throw that rule at the top six leading HSFs in our testing this month and it will throw the entire group in to a massive mix-up when it comes to "What ifs". My point is here that the coolers are all getting to be so good at what they do, the actual performance difference is getting to be so minute it is hard tell unless you have a graph out comparing them.

Dit is een nieuwe variant van de SiS 635 chipset die geschikt is voor de 0,13 micron Tualatin versie van de Pentium III. De chipset ondersteunt zowel DDR als SDR geheugen; de ontwerpers van moederborden kunnen kiezen tussen 3/0, 0/3 en 2/2 DIMM configuraties. In het artikel wordt onder andere de latency van het geheugen gemeten, de bandbreedte en de performance in wat spellen en applicaties. Ook wordt getest op stabiliteit en mag zichzelf een heel interessante optie noemen voor iedereen die een Pentium III wil aanschaffen:

De 1,4GHz AYHJA Thunderbird, waarschijnlijk de laatste Athlon die niet op Palomino is gebaseerd en de 950MHz Durons liggen daar al in de winkel. Verder heeft men een aantal plaatjes geschoten van de D-0 stepping van Pentium III. Deze heeft een iets hoger voltage maar verschilt verder niet veel van de vorige steppings.

Electronic Buyers' News meldt dat de JEDEC, het industrie orgaan waarin onder andere de voornaamste geheugen fabrikanten deelnemen, de specificaties voor de DDR333 standaard heeft aangenomen. De DDR333 geheugen chips zullen gebruikt worden in een nieuw PC2700 DDR MicroDIMM package. MicroDIMMs hebben kleinere afmetingen dan de huidige 184-pins DDR modules en zijn daardoor niet backwards compatible. DDR333 werkt op dezelfde spanning als DDR266 en DDR200, namelijk 2,5V:

As memory chip maker frequency yields increased, the new faster DDR standard was needed for another speed grade increase in modules. The 2.7-Gbyte/sec data rate of a PC2700 DIMM compares to 1.6-Gbyte/sec for a Direct Rambus DRAM RIMM. In a dual memory channel configuration, the DDR module will have a 5.4-Gbyte/sec data rate. As with all current generation DDR modules, the PC2700 will operate on 2.5V power.

Tom's Hardware Guide vond het nodig om een roundup te schrijven waarin een zestal videokaarten met de GeForce2 MX chipset met elkaar worden vergeleken. De kaarten die bekeken worden zijn van merken als Abit, Gainward, MSI, Pixelview, Suma en Leadtek. Deze exemplaren verschillen onderling niet veel op het eerste gezicht; alleen in hoeveelheid geheugen en eventuele extra features zoals TV-Out. Na het bespreken van ieder kaartje apart worden ze onder andere getest in 3DMark, MBTR, Q3A en AquaMark, waarin vooral de Gainward opvalt. In de conclusie wordt uiteindelijk de Gainward als winnaar aangewezen vanwege zijn zeer complete featureset en gegarandeerde overklokmogelijkheden:

ZDNet Deutschland heeft uit goed geïnformeerde bronnen vernomen dat de server versie van de Palomino core de naam 'Athlon MP' krijgt. Eerder circuleerden er geruchten over de naam 'Athlon Pro', die onder andere voorkwam in het BIOS van de Tyan Thunder K7. Kennelijk heeft AMD op het laatste moment toch voor een andere naam gekozen. Drie jaar geleden gebeurde iets soortgelijks bij de K6-2, waarvan de eerste lichting onder de naam K6-3D verkocht werd.

De Athlon MP zal aanstaande maandag tesamen met de 760MP chipset door AMD aangekondigd worden. Op dezelfde dag mogen we de release van de Tyan Thunder K7 verwachten. Dit plankje is vanaf volgende week beperkt leverbaar bij Hardware.nl en CompTech World. De Athlon MP wordt tegenover de Xeon gepositioneerd, terwijl de Athlon 4 met de Pentium 4 gaat concurreren en de Duron strijd levert met de Celeron:

Aus gut informierten Kreisen verlautet, dass sich AMD (Börse Frankfurt: AMD) vor zwei Tagen nun endlich für eine Bezeichnung seines neuen Server-Chips durchgerungen hat. Demnach soll der Prozessor, der auf dem vor kurzem vorgestellten Athlon 4 basiert (ZDNet berichtete), unter der Bezeichnung Athlon MP vorgestellt werden.

Een anonieme bezoeker stuurde ons naar Coax.nl, waar de notulen zijn gepost van het overleg tussen deze gebruikersvereniging en UPC/Chello. Uit dit gesprek is zeer goed nieuws gekomen voor fanatieke downloaders, want het plannen waarin een datalimiet ingevoerd dreigde te worden zijn voor onbepaalde tijd in de ijskast gezet. In het complete verslag lees je bovendien dat de minimale snelheid binnen het UPC netwerk wordt verhoogd naar 1MB per minuut. Hoewel dit slechts een magere 17KB/s is (de maximale snelheid is ongeveer 180KB/s) moet dit voorheen nog lager geweest zijn. Andere afspraken die gemaakt zijn zien er ook gunstig uit:

Door de besparing van ca. 5 miljoen gulden door het invoeren van 22 cent/tik voor het bellen naar de helpdesk, kon het aantal helpdeskmedewerkers verdubbeld worden. Hierdoor behoren de wachttijden bijna tot het verleden. Er komt een directe koppeling vanuit de helpdesk met het klantenbestand waardoor er een optimale afhandeling ontstaat van klachten, zowel technisch als financieel.

De mannen van X-Bit Labs hebben een review online geparkeerd van de grootste harde schijf ter wereld; de Seagate Barracuda 180. Dit monster is opgebouwd uit maar liefst 12 platters van 15GB groot. Dit geheel draait met 7200 toeren per minuut rond en moet dan ook goed beveiligd worden door SeaShell, G-Force Protection en Rotational Vibration Protection systemen. Het apparaat is met 4 of 16MB cache te krijgen en is speciaal geoptimaliseerd voor RAID toepassingen. In de testjes die gedaan worden wrodt hij vergeleken met de Barracuda 18XL en de Quantum Atlas V, die beide niet kunnen tippen aan de doorvoersnelheid van de Barracuda 180. De seektime van de 24 koppen was echter iets lager. Het is volgens de conclusie te betwijfelen of consumenten er in geïnteresseerd moeten zijn:

It is too big for a home PC, and those guys who work with video editing may be unhappy about the "drops" we discovered on the read graphs and a not very stable linear write graph. Moreover, all hard disk drives are mortal that is why losing 180GB of data is a considerably greater loss than 18GB, for instance. So, it inevitably comes to mind that this storage device should be used in RAID systems, which automatically throws it into a totally different market segment.

The Register bericht dat het waarschijnlijk is dat de chipset van nVidia met de codenaam Crush nForce zal gaan heten. De nForce zal bestaan uit een Integrated Graphics Processor (IGP) en een Media and Communications Processor (MCP). De north- en southbridge dus.

Er zullen vier verschillende versies van de chipset verschijnen. De nForce 220 heeft ondersteuning voor single channel DDR geheugen en de nForce 220-D is het zelfde, maar deze heeft ondersteuning voor Dolby Digital geluid. Verder komt nVidia waarschijnlijk met de nForce 420 chipset die ondersteuning heeft voor dual channel DDR geheugen en natuurlijk de nForce 420-D. Verwacht wordt dat nVidia deze chipset 4 juni zal introduceren:

What will Nvidia call its upcoming Crush chipset? Only the company knows for sure, but nForce - broadly matching the company GeForce brand for its graphics technology - appears to be the most likely candidate, according to documentation seen by The Register.

If it's accurate, it suggests Nvidia will release Crush as the nForce Platform Processing Architecture comprising an Integrated Graphics Processor (IGP) and a Media and Communications Processor (MCP).

Both parts are PC-oriented versions of the Northbridge and Southbridge chips Nvidia developed for Microsoft's Xbox.

The documentation appears to confirm reports the nForce will be offered in two forms, each using one of two IGP variants. The two versions of the IGP support a 64-bit and 128-bit graphics bus, respectively.

Electic Tech schrijft dat Toshiba er als eerste in is geslaagd om een prototype te produceren van een full-color organic light emitting display (OLED). Het scherm is 2.85 inch groot en kan 260.000 kleuren weergeven in Q-CIF formaat en 6-bit zwart-wit. Een OLED bestaat uit organische LED’s die niet alle nadelen van LCD’s hebben. Een backlight is niet nodig en daardoor is ook het stroomverbruik een stuk lager. Verder is de refreshrate hoger en is het beeld zichtbaar onder een grotere hoek. Toshiba verwacht de productie te kunnen starten in fiscaal 2002. De eerste OLED’s zijn bedoelt voor kleine PDA’s en mobieltjes, maar de volgende generatie kan worden toegepast in notebooks :

All OLEDs commercialized to date are mono-color or area-color, and use small molecules in the light-emitting organic film rather than polymers. They require vacuum-evaporation technology in the production process, which is unsuitable for the fabrication of large-sized, high-resolution displays on a large mother glass substrate, as required in the TFT production process. Toshiba has overcome these limitations with the development of new ink-jet printing and solvent-material technologies for depositing a polymer film. Both advances can be applied to the achievement of high resolution displays and efficient mass production without any need for a vacuum environment.

Like LCDs, OLEDs fall into two broad categories, passive-matrix and active-matrix displays. A large-sized, full color OLED requires an active matrix driver in respect of panel lifetime, power consumption and picture quality. The high level of carrier mobility required for driving OLED in the active matrix TFTs can be realized only by polysilicon, not by amorphous silicon. Toshiba established such technology in the process of becoming the world's first manufacturer of low temperature polysilicon TFT LCDs, and has transferred it to the OLED.

Toshiba expects to start production of OLEDs in fiscal 2002. Production will initially target cellular phones and small- and medium-sized PDAs, and then medium- and large-sized displays, including high-end portable PCs that requires higher resolution and a gradation surpassing a 64-gray scale.

Bij Digital Silence is een persbericht van Micron en Infineon te lezen waarin zij aankondigen samen te gaan werken op het gebied van DRAM geheugen met een lagere latency, oftewel Reduced Latency DRAM (RLDRAM). RLDRAM moet het gat dichten dat er op dit moment bestaat tussen het goedkope, maar langzame DRAM en het dure, snelle SRAM.

De nieuwe geheugenchipjes zullen aanvankelijk een snelheid van 600Mbit/sec/pin bewerkstelligen, terwijl de latency wordt verlaagd tot 'een fractie van die van concurrerende architecturen'. Infineon en Micron maken niet alleen samen een specificatie, maar gaan ook samen het geheugen promoten en beschikbaar stellen:

Infineon and Micron will work closely together ensuring multiple sources for the new RLDRAMs by developing pin- and function-compatible products. Each company provides system expertise and product direction, delivering to customers the collective benefit of their wide range of market experience and innovative technology.

Collectively representing the most advanced technologies and a large share of the DRAM market, the commitment of Infineon and Micron to RLDRAM assures users these functionally compatible, high-performance memories will be widely available."

Het geheugen moet vooral gebruikt gaan worden in netwerkapparatuur.

Max Page van FrostyTech brengt ons een review van de Titan TTC-D4T heatsink. De heatsink bestaat uit twaalf 32mm hoge vinnen die 26mm breed zijn. De koeler lijkt een beetje op de ThermalTake Volcano II. Bovenop de heatsink zit een 4800 RPM fan bevestigd. De Titan presteert vrij redelijk op het FrostyTech Synthetic Temperature Test Platform. Hij belandt tussen de ThermalTake DUO462-9 mine CuOrb en de Blizzard S370-L. De Titan TTC-D4T kost slechts 18 dollar. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

The Titan TTC-D4T ranks among other heatsinks as an average performer. Were we in a store that only sold OEM heatsinks the D4T would be a good option. Its' cooling performance appears to be slightly less than that of the mini copper orb on the small copper die template.

The base is roughly finished and could do with some good lapping to achieve higher results. Apart from that the heatsink offers fairly average performance with moderate amounts of fan noise. The clip on the other hand is very stiff and one aspect of the D4T we did not like whatsoever. It is one thing for a heatsink to require a screw driver to clip the heatsink in place. It is quite another thing entirely for that heatsink to require screw driver and still remain difficult to clip into position.

Still, its' average performance position the D4T well above more generic OEM heatsinks so it is a good option for budget-minded systems.
