AMD Chief Operating Officer Hector Ruiz heeft tijdens een bezoek aan AMD's Fab30 in Dresden aangekondigd dat AMD zijn produktiecapaciteit gaat vergroten. De aandelenkoers van Rambus Inc. is in de afgelopen twee dagen met 34% gedaald nadat bekend werd dat Intel toch een SDRAM chipset voor de Pentium 4 in ontwikkeling heeft. The Register meldt dat Global Telesystems zijn Europese internet backbone heeft uitgebreid met 96 channels van elk 10Gigabit/s. De huidige backbone van 40 2,5Gbps channels verplaatst op dit moment 25% van alle Europese traffic. Voor de komende jaren verwacht GTS dat de Europese traffic geleidelijk toeneemt in verhouding met het verkeer dat op en neer naar de VS gaat:

LiquidAcid schrijft dat Sander Sassen van HardwareCentral een review heeft gebakken van de bekende 12/10/32 speed IDE PlexWriter van Plextor. Net als in de eerdere reviews heeft Sander niets meer dan lof over deze cd-bakker:

As expected for any product from Plextor, the PlexWriter 12/10/32A performed admirably. We tried very hard to upset the BURN-Proof technology and produce some unrecoverable coasters, but lost not a single disk to writing errors by the PlexWriter. Whatever we tried, other than flipping the power switch or hitting the reset button, it wouldn’t budge and kept producing successful CD-recordings. So, quite likely, with Burn-Proof technology you’ll never again make coasters because your system can't keep up with the CD-Writer.

Overall, we were impressed by the speed and ease of operation of the new Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32A; we've found nothing that would indicate that it is troubled by its IDE/ATAPI interface. It even performed without problems on lower-end machines. Its performance and broad range of features, including the vast list of supported CD formats, makes the PlexWriter a very versatile CD-writer that allows backup, storage or archiving of almost any file type or format.

To summarize: Plextor has again proven to be a manufacturer of high-quality, high-performance CD-related equipment. The performance and stability of the PlexWriter 12/10/32A was as good as we've come to expect from their SCSI line of CD-writers and easily bests their previous offering, the PlexWriter 12/10/32A. Combined with the excellent software package, the PlexWriter 12/10/32A deserves a warm recommendation.

Bill Bales, mede-oprichter van Napster maar momenteel CEO van AppleSoup noemt de Napster-ban geen goede oplossing tegen het illegaal verspreiden van muziekbestanden. Nieuwe technologiën voor "peer-to-peer swapping" worden pas echt een nachtmerrie voor platenbazen. Daarnaast zullen veel Napsteraars gewoon overstappen naar bijvoorbeeld programma's als Gnutella.

"The RIAA has won the battle, but it may lose the war. There are other technologies out there that are just frightening for copyright owners," Bales said, including upcoming technologies that give users anonymity. "It's quite scary for copyright owners."

According to Bales, Wednesday's surprise federal court ruling could, in fact, spur piracy by providing other peer-to-peer technologies with a "recipe" for how to get around existing copyright laws.

Kyle van Hard OCP heeft een roundup gepost van een zestal Socket 370 heatsink-fan combo's die na wat gesleutel ook te gebruiken zijn op je Socket A plank. De Global Win FOP38 uitgerust met een 7000 RPM fan bleek de meeste brute van het stel maar vereist wel wat modificatie. De ArctiCooler en de Alpha PAL 6035 bleken goede alternatieven:

The GW FOP38 came out on top as far as keeping the temperature the lowest. Now for the bad stuff. For you to use it on a new socketed CPU, you will have to cut it up though. So you will need some tools. This is surely not for everyone and don't call me Shirley, but for most of you Hard|Core folks modifying this unit will not be a problem. Is GW going to build a similar one designed for the newer CPUs? I am sure they are but we have not seen it yet. Also, keep in mind this unit is noisy at best and has the ability to chop an entire cat face off. I THINK the unit will come with some type of grill to keep the feline mutilation to a minimum. We should be seeing these show up for sale at local retailers this next month.

As for the ArctiCooler and the Alpha, they are both top notch units and performed very close to the FOP38. Reasons you might want to check these units out is the fact that you don't have to own a saw or endanger your cat. Also, they are both a bit smaller in size. The ArctiCooler is both smaller than the Alpha and has a better clipping mechanism than the Alpha. Man I LOVE my Alphas, but the ArctiCooler is simply looking like a better buy, if they do in fact go on sale anytime soon.

For the budget cooler in the group, you have to got with the Golden Orb. Ok, so my CPU is 10 degrees hotter, but I just saved enough money for a jug of Jim Beam. That has got to make some of you happy, some more than others. Yes, it is feasible that the 10degrees might mean a difference in your top end stable OC somewhere or another, but odds are if you are drunk you will not notice anyway.

De Nederlandse muziekindustrie heeft postitief gereageerd op de beslissing van de Amerikaanse rechter dat Napster geen muziek mag verspreiden waar auteursrecht op zit.

Een steun in de rug, aldus een woordvoerder van auteursrechtorganisatie Buma/Stemra.

"Voor de industrie is de uitspraak goed. Ik ga ook niet zomaar bij Albert Heijn naar binnen en neem een fles cola mee onder het mom 'ze hebben toch geld genoeg'. Zo is het ook met muziek. Daarin zitten doorgaans veel manuren. Door de gratis verspreiding derven de artiesten inkomsten."

De auteursrechtenorganisatie is niet tegen internet. "Als er maar een veilig systeem komt waarmee muziek kan worden verspreid en tevens betaling mogelijk is."

Ook de cd-industrie is tevreden. Alhoewel L. Beerends van Universal Music denkt dat Napster heeft bijgedragen aan extra verkopen.

"Ik kan me voorstellen dat Napster zorgt voor omzet. Als een luisteraar via internet muziek heeft binnengehaald, kan ik me voorstellen dat die consument later de hele cd koopt. Vaak willen mensen toch het origineel."

Desalniettemin is Beerends van mening dat de rechten van artiesten beschermd moeten zijn. "Het is een belangrijk vonnis en een keerpunt in de regulering op internet. Napster heeft in elk geval aangetoond dat je met muziek ook andere dingen kunt doen."

Volgens een Duits onderzoek heeft de komst van electronische post zorgt ervoor gezorgd dat er juist meer papier wordt verbruikt dan voorheen. Vrijwel iedereen print zijn mail namelijk gewoon uit ipv het via zijn / haar schermpie tot zich te nemen. Hewlett-Packard (die hier uiteraard erg blij mee is) verwacht dat het dit komende jaren alleen maar toe zal nemen:

Uit een onderzoek in Duitsland blijkt dat 18 procent van de Duitse bevolking door het gebruik van internet duidelijk meer papier gebruikt als voorheen. Dit is het resultaat van een representatief onderzoek, dat onderzoeksbureau Ipsos in opdracht van Minolta heeft uitgevoerd. Vooral e-mails worden door de Duitse bevolking graag uitgeprint: Slechts 6,8 procent van de gebruikers leest de electronische post alleen maar op het beeldscherm.

Deze cijfers zijn een duidelijke indicatie dat de papierloze werkplek voorlopig nog niet in zicht is. Vergelijkbare studies in de V.S. resulteerden in overeenkomstige resultaten. Printerfabrikant Hewlett-Packard (HP) liet bijvoorbeeld al weten dat bij 33 procent van de Amerikaanse managers de printerstapel de laatse paar jaar duidelijk hoger is geworden. En het eind is nog niet in zicht - in tegendeel: HP verwacht ook de komende jaren nog een stijging van de papierstapel bij de printers.

The chip is essentially about getting the PowerPC's clock speed up to counter the developments Intel and AMD have made - so much for the limitations of Cisc technology, ahem. So the new chip will feature a longer instruction pipeline to allow the chip's clock speed to be raised without adversely impacting the chip's efficiency. To counter the reduction in the number of instructions a processor can handle per second inherent in a longer pipeline, the Motorola has increased the number of instruction processing units in the chip, with three extra AltiVec engines and two more integer units.

The chip's L2 cache will be brought onto the die, to allow CPU and cache to communicate at the same speed. The L2 connects to the L1 across a new, 256-bit bus. The 'G4 Plus' will support external, backside configuration L3 cache, up to 2MB of it.

That schedule suggests Apple will be pretty much stuck with its current range of dual-CPU Power Macs for some time to come. Short of upping the clock speed to 600MHz, there's little Apple can do until the 'G4 Plus' arrives. And it doesn't want to be stuck with a dual 500MHz G4 that's faster than a single-CPU 'G4 Plus' machine - remember, in the computer biz, newest is always best.

The schedule may also affect Motorola's G5 chip, its first multi-core CPU, which is believed to contain four G4s operating in close harmony to generate four times the performance of a single chip at a given clock speed. With the cores so tightly coupled, users should get all the benefit of four-way multiprocessing without the usual CPU management overhead - what, in other words, stops the new dual-CPU Power Mac G4s from delivering double the performance of a single-CPU Mac.

Mensen die ICQ2000a gebruiken kunnen binnenkort banners op hun scherm verwachten. AOL, eigenaar van het succesvolle Instant Messaging programma, heeft maakt hiervoor gebruik van de auto-update functie.

Na de automatische update is het niet meer mogelijk terug te gaan neer de oude versie (tenzij je je hele harde schijf formatteert). Ook kun je de auto-update functie niet meer uitzetten waardoor AOL vrij spel krijgt.

Inmiddels hebben hackers een truc gevonden om de auto-update alsnog uit te zetten (via het windows-register). Deze truc kunt je hier vinden.

Extreme Hardware heeft een blik geworpen op de STMicro Kyro videokaart, een final silicon versie met pre-release drivers. Zoals je waarschijnlijk weet maakt deze kaart gebruik van tile-based rendering, een bandbreedte besparende methode waarbij alleen het voor de gamer zichtbare 3D data verwerkt wordt. Dankzij dit truukje legt een 110/110MHz Kyro kaartje met 64MB geheugen en een fill rate van 220Mpixels prestaties neer die vergelijkbaar zijn met die een GeForce2 MX. Als nadeel wordt opgemerkt dat er visuele schoonheids foutjes kunnen optreden, hopelijk worden die er allemaal uitgevist als de drivers verder ontwikkeld zijn.

Assuming that the KYRO hits the market at the expected $150-200 price range, its performance will be right in line with its price. With performance between a GeForce SDR and DDR, and at times faster than a GeForce2 GTS, the KYRO is a great mid-range choice for those who can’t afford a $250-300 video card. If it manages to hit the street prices competitively with the GeForce SDR, it will be an excellent buy. If its price falls closer to a GeForce DDR, it still should be a good value. However, if this is the case, the KYRO’s occasional visual problems and the quality of its driver optimizations will become the deciding factors in its success. Volgens de programmeur gaat het om patenten van Irdeto (patent) en Npoint / Cryptech (patent).

Enkel de patentinformatie is volgens de Stealth-maker, nu in dienst van een softwarebedrijf in de regio Rotterdam, niet voldoende om het geluidssignaal te decoderen. "Zelfs met die informatie is het nog een taaie kluif, maar het is een prima uitgangspunt." De Rotterdammer is niet de enige die werkt aan decodering van het geluidssignaal. Canal Plus wil niet bevestigen of er technieken van de betrokken bedrijven worden gebruikt. De betaalzender benadrukt dat het decoderen van haar signaal zonder te betalen strafbaar is. Volgens een woordvoerster van Irdeto gebruikt Canal Plus inderdaad haar technologie.

Bij Sharky Extreme hebben ze een preview van de 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 voor de Macintosh geschreven. In de test wordt de kaart van 3dfx vergeleken met de ATI Rage 128 en de PC-versie van de Voodoo5 5500 vergeleken. De test is wel een beetje oneerlijk, de Rage en de Voodoo voor de Mac worden op een G4 450 getest en vergeleken met de resultaten van de Voodoo 5 op een Pentium III 933. De Voodoo5 is vooral op wat hogere resoluties sneller dan de Rage 128. Wel is de Mac-versie van de Voodoo5, hoewel de resultaten niet slecht zijn, minder snel dan de PC-versie.

Obviously a comparison between a Pentium III 933MHz and a G4 450MHz Motorola part is not exactly fair, even if Steve Jobs says the G4 450 is faster. Therefore we are not making one. We are not grading the Voodoo5 for the Mac against the performance of its PC counterpart. We are comparing the Voodoo5 on the Mac to the ATI Rage 128 on the Mac. The PC system is included to give a point of reference as to PC performance.[break]
Hoewel deze cijfers enigzins geflatteerd zijn vanwege de ongelijke testsystemen blijft de Mac-versie toch ver achter op de PC-versie van de Voodoo 5. Jon Simon van Sharky Extreme komt tot de volgende conclusie: [/break] Overall, the Voodoo5 5500 PCI for Mac is a blazing fast video card. It is unfortunately held back by the Mac hardware it is running on. It also still needs work in the driver performance arena. The card provides high-resolution support for 2D with excellent performance and high-resolution 3D with quality that just cannot be matched in any other Mac video card. But it does not provide top of the line low-resolution 3D performance and comes at a painfully high price tag. Since we did not have a shipping product, we cannot bring you a final verdict, but with 3dfx planning on shipping within a couple of weeks, we have our doubts about the final product. 3dfx's biggest worry should be that, because of the Voodoo5's high price tag, their Voodoo3 2000 and 3000 will undercut their Mac Voodoo5 sales.

Scott Gooden van AnandTech heeft een review gemaakt van de IBM 75GXP hard drive. Het is een 15,3GB model met 1 platter van 15,3GB. Deze ATA100 schijf draait op 7200rpm, heeft 2MB cache en een toegangstijd van 8,5ms. De drive is de kleinste uit de GXP serie, die doorloopt tot maar liefst 75GB voor het topmodel, waarbij 5 platters in 1 behuizing worden gepropt. Scott besluit:

VHware schrijft: "nVidia zal binnenkort zijn debuut maken op de chipset-markt. Het bedrijf is bezig met het ontwikkelen van een DDR chipset voor zowel de Pentium III als de Athlon. Ook wordt er bij nVidia gewerkt aan een dual channel DDR chipset, deze zou in het eerste kwartaal van 2001 op de markt moeten komen. Op de chipset is een GeForce2 GTS of een GeForce2 MX geïntegreerd."

Love them or hate them, you have to give NVIDIA its due. It's a great company with topnotch video cards that absolutely pound the competition in the marketplace. Now the computer industry is beginning to rumble as news of NVIDIA's tight lipped plans to create two DDR SDRAM chipsets start to leak out. The info we have heard from several reliable sources suggests that these could be killer products. With NVIDIA's track record with graphics controllers, the established chipset makers have reason to look over their shoulders and worry.

The first NVIDIA chipset should see alpha silicon around November and is rumored to be a DDR-SDRAM integrated offering. The integrated graphics solution will either be a GeForce2 gts or a GeForce2MX. Like VIA's next products, there will be versions of the same chipset for both the AMD Athlon and the Intel PIII.

In Q1, 2001 the second NVIDIA chipset should see first silicon. This chipset has similar integrated features as the first NVIDIA chipset, but has dual channel DDR-SDRAM support for a massive 4.256 GB/s bandwidth!

Anand Lal Shimpi heeft in een artikel de FSAA en beeldkwaliteit van de Voodoo 5, de ATI Radeon en de GeForce 2 vergeleken. De FSAA van 3dfx komt opnieuw als winnaar uit de bus. Ook de FSAA van de Radeon presteert opvallend goed, in Quake 3 op 640x480x32 met 4x FSAA is de Radeon zelfs sneller dan de GeForce 2.

From a performance standpoint, none of the current cards have the real world fill rate to push a 4 sample FSAA setting at 60+ fps, which is what we would ideally like. This makes the presence of 2 sample FSAA settings a very smart move on behalf of 3dfx and NVIDIA: we would definitely like to see a 2 sample setting added to the ATI Radeon's sole 4 sample setting.

3dfx definitely has the best 2 sample FSAA setting out of the bunch, although we were unsuccessful with tweaking the LOD bias settings when enabling 2 sample FSAA (other artifacts would pop up), the setting still seems to offer the best overall result in terms of image quality and performance.

ATI's Radeon benefits greatly from its efficient memory management, allowing it to offer faster performance at their 4 sample FSAA setting than NVIDIA's GeForce2 GTS running in its 4 sample mode in 32-bit color. This is an example of yet another situation where theoretical fill rate becomes meaningless as the reality of memory bandwidth limitations sets in.

A: Sledgehammer is an unannounced product, so I can't supply many details on the processor features etc. We have not accelerated the public timeline for SledgeHammer, so don't expect to see systems this year. What we have said is that SledgeHammer will feature 2 processor die on a singe chip, and that it will feature the x86-64 instruction set. X86-64 is an extension to the current x86 instruction set to enable support for 64 bit operations. Our approach is similar to what was done during the move from 8- to 16-bits and from 16- to 32-bits. We think our approach is the most straightforward approach to 64-bit computing since it does not require developers to toss out all of their x86 knowledge or tools, and also ensures leading performance on the billions of dollars of currently available 32-bit software. Not sure where the codename came from…

The decision marked a major victory for the U.S. recording industry, which had targeted Napster as a dangerous Internet rival that could short-circuit traditional music sales.

De mannen van iXBT Labs hebben een review gemaakt van de Chaintech CT-60JV. Het is een op de i815 chipset van Intel gebaseerd moederbord. Het moederbord heeft een fijne lay-out van 1x AGP, 6x PCI, 3x DIMM en 1x een AMR slot. Wel jammer is dat het moederbord gebaseerd is op de i815 en niet de i815e. Dit betekend dat er een ICH1 I/O controller op zit. Hierdoor kan het bord niet over 4x USB en ATA100 beschikken. Wat ook tegenvalt zijn de overklok opties, er is namelijk geen mogelijk tot vCore of Vio voltage tweaking en er zijn maar 20 verschillende FSB instellingen. Wat wel leuk is van het bord is dat je het bios kan flashen tijdens het booten met een nieuwe bios op diskette. Dit is vooral handig als je een OS hebt waar geen "echte" DOS mode meer in zit.
