VIAHardware.com heeft een review in elkaar gedraaid van de PowerColor Evil Kyro 64MB, gebaseerd op de PowerVR 3 grafische chipset. De Evil Kyro-reeks richt zich op de budgetmarkt, en wordt in deze review tegenover een GeForce256 DDR gezet. Deze laatste komt de laatste tijd ook steeds meer in de budget-regionen terecht, maar is nog steeds een stuk duurder dan de Evil Kyro 64MB, die slechts $139 moet opbrengen.
De prestaties van de Kyro zijn redelijk. Op 1024x768x32 in 3DMark 2000 is het verchil in punten met de GeForce DDR niet groot. de Quake3 benchmarks vertellen echter een heel ander verhaal; met de high quality-instelling op 1024x768 is de GeForce DDR meer dan anderhalf keer zo snel. De reviewer verwacht echter dat er nog heel wat aan de prestaties van de PowerVR 3 gedaan kan worden, en dat het zeker een veelbelovende GPU is:
I would have to attribute the Kyro’s loss of power at higher details level to two main factors. One being the low core clock speed is hampering the performance of the internal Z-Buffer. For a new product of this generation running a core clock at 115Mhz is just insanely low. Granted, the fact that it is an entirely new chipset architecture is probably conspiring to limit the workable clock speeds. Given time I am certain that ST can improve upon the core design, which will allow it to scale to higher clock speeds.
I can’t help but feel that the SDR memory is also restricting the Kyro, even if ST does tout it as not needing higher memory bandwidth. Given time the Kyro does show good promise. I have no doubt that given time, and improvements to both the drivers and the core itself, the Kyro could indeed position itself as a contender in the market. For right now, with an estimated street prices of $129-139, much better performance would be realized out of a GeForce2 MX based AGP card. The biggest difference that the immaturity of the Kyro does allow it a lot more room for improvement than the MX does because that is a mature product with mature drivers. Once newer drivers are available on the market, I will be re-visting the Kyro to see how it scales, and hopefully we will also get a chance to see how InnoVISION’s version of the Kyro will perform as well.

Het lijkt mij dat je 2 dingen kan doen om dat op te lossen. N.l de snelheid van het geheugen verhogen of er domweg meer RAM op rammen. Dat 64 MB niet op een buget kaart hoort is onzin. Een buget koper gaat juist op de prijs kwaliteit verhouding af en als ze 64 MB onboard kunnen leveren voor een buget prijs is dat alleen maar interessanter voor de klant.
