Intel heeft tegenover Computex de geruchten dat ze aan een Pentium 4 chipset met PC133 SDRAM werken bevestigd. De chipset krijgt de naam 'Brookdale'. Er zullen twee versies van de Brookdale op de markt komen, een met gewoon SDRAM en een met DDR-SDRAM. De moet in het derde kwartaal van 2001 in de winkels liggen.

Taiwan's computer makers were informed by Intel Corp., that versions of its new "Brookdale" chipset -- the first to support non-Rambus-standard memory on the Pentium 4 processor -- will be compatible with two other types of memory chips, local media reported yesterday, citing unidentified local motherboard makers.

Intel will introduce the Brookdale in the third quarter next year. Versions of the Brookdale chipset, managing the data flow between a processor and other computer components, will work with Intel's Pentium 4 processor and support PC-133 synchronous dynamic random access and faster double data rate memory chips. Intel on Wednesday ended its endorsement of a memory designed by US-based Rambus Inc as the only standard to be used with its Pentium 4 processor, scheduled for release later this year. The world's largest chipmaker said it would design a Pentium 4 chipset to work with SDRAM memory.

Hiermee neemt Intel een voorsprong op AMD die de concurrerende 1,1 GHz Athlon pas 28 augustus uit zal brengen. De 1,13 GHz Pentium III zal voor 990 dollar te koop zijn. Intel will hurdle past another speed barrier Monday when it releases a 1.13-GHz Pentium III, but rival Advanced Micro Devices won't be far behind with a 1.1-GHz Athlon on Aug. 28.

AMD is also busy preparing Athlon chips for the notebook market. In the fourth quarter, the company will come out with Corvette, a low-power version of Athlon for deluxe notebooks and desktops, and Camaro, a similar chip for budget portables.

Intel's new chip, which will sell for around $990 in volume quantities, is expected to be featured in computers from Dell Computer and IBM, among other manufacturers. With the new chip, Intel will likely drop the price of its 1-GHz Pentium III to around $750. However, the company won't likely cut other Pentium III prices, as it shaved the wholesale prices on the rest of the line by 10 to 24 percent on July 17.

LONDEN - Het Finse telecomconcern Sonera gaat zichzelf te koop aanbieden. Tot de bedrijven die al belangstelling hebben getoond, behoren KPN, Deutsche Telekom en France Télécom. Dat heeft de zakenkrant Financial Times vrijdag gemeld.

De marktwaarde van Sonera ligt rond de 33 miljard dollar (f 78 miljard). Maar volgens Financial Times zal het bedrijf vrijwel zeker veel meer opbrengen.

De Finse staat heeft nu nog een meerderheidsbelang van 54 procent in Sonera, maar het parlement gaf in juni goedkeuring voor verkoop daarvan.

De mensen van The Register kregen vandaag van Microsoft insiders te horen dat aanstaande maandag Service Pack 1 voor Windows 2000 te downloaden is. Microsoft had twee maal de komst van SP1 aangekondigd maar beide keren werd de komst van SP1 uitgesteld. Hopelijk blijkt ook dit keer drie maal weer scheepsrecht te zijn...

M$ insiders told The Register today that SP1 has finally been released to manufacture after last minute hitches twice prevented the code going gold.

The clever money is now on SP1 being available for download from Microsoft's site sometime on Monday, with CD copies of the 83Mb patch being available later for the modemly-challenged.

Microsoft expects to spend $500 million to market and sell its forthcoming Xbox video game console, the most money the software giant has ever spent to launch a new product, a Microsoft executive said today.

"We have to build demand for this to be successful," Robbie Bach, senior vice president of Microsoft's games division, said during a financial analysts' meeting at the company's headquarters today. "This will be the biggest launch ever done. You can see half a billion dollars (spent) in the first 18 months of the project."

The investment will include marketing, advertising and support to retailers and third-party software makers, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said.

Ballmer said the marketing costs also include Xbox subsidies. Game console makers routinely subsidize the cost of hardware, with consoles selling for about half the manufacturing cost. The difference is made up through software sales and licensing fees.

Bach said the Xbox is on track to ship in the fall of next year. Microsoft is developing 30 video games in-house and is approving game projects from third-party software makers, he said. The company has finalized a design for the game console and has already shipped 1,000 developer kits to some 200 programmers who develop video games, he said.

"In terms of our success, the No. 1 key is great games" running on powerful hardware, said Bach, who said the Xbox will have three times the performance of Sony's PlayStation2.

Bij HardwareCentral kun je een review lezen van Elsa's GeForce2 MX videokaart, de Gladiac MX. Sander vergeleek de kaart met een GeForce DDR en een GeForce2 en kwam tot de conclusie dat je voor $120 dollar een erg goede performer in huis haalt, ideaal voor je budget PC dus:

Quite frankly, taking the GeForce2 MX’s power consumption and heat dissipation into consideration we see no reason why nVidia shouldn’t endeavor into the mobile market. Given its excellent track record and a name for quality and performance most people would be more than willing to pay extra to have this kind of quality under the hood of their new notebook.

Elsa is once again first to market with an excellent product, as expected. The Gladiac MX proved an excellent performer, especially considering the price/performance ratio. Drivers and documentation, as well as the six-year warranty, are top notch, no worries there.

Overall the GeForce2 MX is a definitely valid option for the casual gamer or the people who don’t really need top gaming performance, but do want a very good price/performance ratio.

"Jaja, nog een review van een MX kaartje. Ditmaal van Elsa bij Tomshardware. Tom is niet heel positief. Hij vind de prijs aan de hoge kant vergeleken met bijvoorbeeld de GeForce 1 (in de VS zijn gelijkwaardige kaarten als de GeForce 1 $30 goedkoper dan de MX) en ook het feit dat er nog geen dualview kaarten zijn vindt hij een minpunt. Bij de kaart kun je een losse tv-out kopen (ViVo-module)." [/break] ELSA chose to come to market as soon as they could to capture much of the GF2 MX momentum hoping to cash in on the initial rush of buyers. I think this wasn't the right idea for this type of product as the Gladiac MX stepped into some serious competition now that it has finally been released. The sad part about this is that it is competing with some older siblings that aren't performance slouches and with the recent price reductions, offer great value as well. The factors holding back the Gladiac MX are its price and absence of TwinView right out of the box. I had expected a little more for a little less when these GF2 MX boards surfaced.

My recommendation at this point would be to hold off until prices come down a bit as I can't justify buying a product that offers nothing over a GeForce SDR but costs $30 more. The only saving grace will be the VIVO module for those who fancy the Video-in option. That is about the only thing the GeForce SDR can't offer at that low of a price. The unfortunate thing for ELSA is that this need is in the minority while the majority cares more about visual quality (which is the same between the two) and performance, than anything else.

Standaard is deze MP3 speler uitgerust met 32MB flash geheugen, met extra kaarten kun je hier maximaal 372MB van maken. Verder heeft de player naast een opgefrist design ondersteuning voor een aantal extra add-ons zoals nieuwe frontjes en een FM tuner. De software kant van het pakket is echt niet om blij van te worden; het meegeleverde proggie RioPort blijkt een kwelling om mee te werken.

The Rio 600 Digital Audio Player brings some great new advancements to the Rio product line. The portable itself is great with an awesome new look and useful functions. The 32 MB standard internal is quite lacking compared to other MP3 players. However, the software is still bad, reminiscent of a Windows 3.1 program. The accessories make customizing the Rio 600 very easy and upgradablility is not a problem either. However, the fact that the user has to purchase S3 made, Rio specific memory backpacks to upgrade the Rio instead of flashcards is very poor. The player, which retails for $US 169.99 is not the cheapest thing in the world and then to buy non-third party memory modules for a device, which should have come with more memory to begin with, is an outrage. Although the Rio is by far the best Digital Audio Player on the market, S3 does not need to make it a monopoly. We here at Electic say: "Keep the costs down."

Volgens C|NET heeft Micron bevestigd dat geheugenprijzen de komende tijd wederom zullen stijgen en dat de productiecapaciteit dit jaar krap zal blijven . Hieronder een gedeelte uit dit bericht.

Micron Technology, one of the world's leading memory makers, confirmed today that prices are heading higher, at least for the short term, and added that manufacturing capacity will remain tight through the end of the year.

Kipp Bedard, Micron's vice president of corporate affairs, said the company is no longer selling 64-megabit memory chips for less than $8.

Until recently, such chips were selling far below $8. According to South Korean officials, for example, the average price for 64-megabit DRAM made there was $6.57 in April, up from $5.93 in March.

"We just increased contract prices this week," Bedard said today in a question and answer session at the Robertson Stephens Semiconductor Conference in San Francisco.

Memory prices are the proverbial canary in a coal mine for the PC industry. When manufacturers found themselves saddled with too much inventory and too much factory capacity between 1995 and 1998, memory sold at, and even below, cost. The sub-$1,000 PC was a byproduct of this era.

Now, unanticipated demand for servers and consumer electronics is outstripping the ability of manufacturers to produce memory. Memory prices are rising, presaging an end to easy discounts. Memory makers are also returning to profitability.

ABIT eschews a lot of the gimmickry that we seem to be seeing in recent motherboard releases and comes up with a solid i440BX board with the BX133-RAID that actually adds useful features instead. While it seems the i440BX may finally be on the way out with the release of the i815, the i440BX is still a cheaper and more mature solution. On the other hand, the i440BX is missing some key features , such as AGP 4X and official 133 MHz FSB support. However, we've seen very little benefit with AGP 4X and the out of spec AGP speed that results from the i440BX at 133 MHz does not seem to be a problem for the majority of current graphics cards.

If you've decided that you want a i440BX board, the BX133-RAID should definitely be at the top of your list. It's got all the truly useful features you could ask for, including Ultra ATA/100 RAID support, more overclocking options than any other board out there, and rock solid satiability. Enough said.

Nu.nl meldt dat gefrustreerde Napsteraars massaal gevlucht zijn naar Gnutella en Scour waardoor beide vanochtend tijdelijk te kampen hadden met capaciteitsproblemen:

Internetsites Scour en Gnutella, concurrenten van Napster, hebben te maken gekregen met technische problemen na de uitspraak van een rechter dat Napster de deuren moet sluiten.

De concurrenten kregen veel meer bezoekers dan normaal. Omdat hun capaciteit de groei van het dataverkeer niet aankon, moesten ze tijdelijk hun diensten stopzetten.

De bedrijven maken het mogelijk muziek van het internet te halen. De Amerikaanse rechter maakte donderdag een eind aan de praktijken van Napster omdat op veel van de nummers die worden gedownload, auteursrechten berusten.

Vrijdag dient een kort geding, waarin Napster vraagt om opschorting van de maatregel totdat een hogere rechtbank zich heeft uitgesproken over de zaak. De concurrenten, die op een soortgelijke wijze als Napster werken, zetten hun diensten voort op het moment dat de capaciteit was uitgebreid. While the legal issues are being resolved, we will continue to advance our real-time search technology to increase the amount of information available to consumers and make the Internet a bigger place."

Volgens The Register zal de eerste beta van Windows Whistler in oktober gereed zijn. Whistler wordt zoals bekend de opvolger van Windows 2000 en zal ook beschikbaar worden in een consumer versie waardoor we Windows Millennium Edition eind volgend jaar ook weer weg kunnen gooien.

Microsoft is poised to release the first beta of Whistler, the successor to Win2k, and is expected to hit the market in the second half of next year. We have of course heard this sort of stuff from Microsoft before, but when Windows division senior VP Brian Valentine delivered the hostages to fortune to journalists yesterday, he was likely speaking from a position of some confidence.

The Whistler beta has slipped somewhat, but not disastrously - it's likely to show its head above the parapet in October. And Microsoft is building on something it's got already this time, so it's revving Win2k rather than reinventing it over a period of three to five years. Whistler will be out in business and consumer flavours (but if you think about it, the customisable skinning facilities allow it to come out in many flavours).

Once it ships, Microsoft will have finally achieved a single, unified codebase, at least for its PC operations, and it will be able to implement simple, dare we say trivial, revs a la Win9x. Which makes the analysts comments yesterday more than a little bizarre - these guys do follow Microsoft, don't they?

EBN Online heeft een interessant artikel gepost waarin staat dat Intel momenteel overweegt om een eigen DDR chipset te gaan ontwikkelen voor haar Pentium 4 processor. Afgelopen dinsdag werd al bekend dat Intel in ieder geval een SDRAM chipset zal introduceren die volgend jaar gebruikt zal worden in desktop P4 systemen. Analisten zien echter weinig nut in deze PC133 SDRAM / Pentium 4 combo omdat het verschil tussen CPU en memory performances té groot zal worden. Intel's DDR chipset plannen worden daarom als een logisch vervolg gezien:

Intel Corp. is bringing focus to its shifting chipset and memory roadmap by confirming that it will "investigate" the use of double-data-rate SDRAM to support its upcoming mainstream Pentium 4 microprocessor.

In addition to turning to independent chipset makers to supply it with DDR-enabled core-logic controllers, Intel has acknowledged for the first time that it "would investigate developing its own DDR chipset" for Pentium 4. The word followed an announcement earlier this week that the company will make a PC133 SDRAM chipset to support its P4 platform -- in addition to its original plan to support the next-generation processor with Direct Rambus DRAM.

Sources noted, however, that Intel's choice of PC133 leaves a gap between processor and memory performance, and would likely see the company quickly upgrade the core-logic interface to accept DDR SDRAM. Such a move would not only maximize the data throughput of the P4, but would parallel plans by Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which will field a DDR chipset later this year to boost the performance of its Athlon processor.

Sources familiar with Intel's roadmap said both Intel's PC133 and DDR SDRAM-enabled chipsets could debut in the second half of 2001, at about the same time the mainstream P4 for desktop PCs is launched. An earlier high-end version of the processor slated for release in the fourth quarter of this year is expected to only work with Direct RDRAM, sources said.

Het is natuurlijk wel de vraag hoe Intel dit juridisch gaat oplossen omdat ze nog steeds in de tang zitten bij Rambus.
