Geen belangrijk nieuws maar wel leuk voor deze trage nieuwsdagen in de zomer. VR-Zone geeft namelijk een aantal unieke posters weg van de AMD Athlon en AMD Duron. De VNU hoeft geen schadevergoeding aan Canal+ te betalen vanwege het artikel dat onlangs in het blad Computer Idee werd gezet over het kraken van de gecodeerde tv-zender. Canal+ wilde tevens graag naam en adres van Computer Idee's bron, maar ook dit werd door de rechter afgewezen. Hieronder wat info afkomstig van Nu.nl

De rechtbankpresident vindt dat Canal+ niet aannemelijk heeft kunnen maken, dat de zender juist vanwege het artikel in Computer Idee extra kosten heeft gemaakt voor het beveiligen van het signaal. Canal+ doet regelmatig technische aanpassingen om haar systeem te beveiligen.

De betaalzender wilde ook dat Computer Idee naam en adres zou geven van degenen van wie het blad de informatie over het decodeerprogramma heeft gekregen. Ook deze vordering wees de rechter af, omdat dit programma via internet vrij verkrijgbaar is en veel mensen over deze informatie kunnen beschikken.

De naam van de bron kennen, zou voor Canal+ volgens de rechter niet veel uitmaken om het kraken tegen te gaan, terwijl de media er belang bij hebben haar bronnen te beschermen.

Eerder besliste de rechtbankpresident dat Computer Idee het nummer met het gewraakte artikel uit de schappen moest halen en in het verhaal in het eerstvolgende nummer moest rectificeren. Dit is inmiddels gebeurd.

Na in januari de Tornado 1000 midi tower te hebben gereviewed kijkt Sharky Extreme vandaag naar de kwaliteiten van de 3DCool Tornado 2000 full tower met standaard vier ingebouwde 80x80 fans, vijf 5.25" bays, zes interne 3.5" en één externe 3.5". Afgezien van de ietwat hoge prijs was er weinig te klagen over dit kassie:

The Tornado 2000 is about as good as it gets for an air-cooled custom case. The design is top-notch, there's plenty of space inside and the number of open 5.25” and 3.5” drive bays is incredible. And this is before we even mention the cooling power of the four internal 80x80 fans. Those with an overclocked system and plenty of peripherals will appreciate both the cooling and added space that the Tornado 2000 offers. The only potential issue is its high price tag and at $175 to start, this case isn't going to be for everyone. Then again, we drop $400 on the newest 3D card, and even more on the hottest CPU, so you could look at custom cases like the Tornado 2000 as an extra investment in keeping your expensive hardware cool.

Oak Technology heeft een chip in ontwikkeling die na plaatsing in CD-RW drives moet voorkomen dat er illegaal kopies worden gemaakt van CD's. Op zich leuk bedacht omdat software-based methodes nooit succesvol zijn geweest. Probleem is alleen dat (a) als het echt blijkt te werken ons recht om backups te maken mooi foetsie is, en (b) dat heel de wereld al een writer heeft zonder dat chippie . Hieronder het artikel:

Oak Technology Inc. here disclosed development of a chip-based approach to providing the highest level of protection against unauthorized reproduction of copyrighted materials with compact-disk recordings.

The approach is being jointly developed with startup Earjam.com Inc., which is leveraging its Internet music player technology with Oak's expertise in controllers for optical storage systems.

"We are enhancing CD-RW [recordable/rewritable drive] electronics to facilitate the protection of CD-based content," said Young Sohn, president and CEO of Oak Technology, which supplies controllers and software to many of the leading manufacturers of drives. "This chip-based approach at the controller level offers greater protection than media-based options, which are more susceptible to hacking or reverse-engineering," he added.

HlpDsK schrijft dat er bij Dan's Data een overklok artikel te vinden is van een Asus A7V versie 1.01 (dwz geen on-board sound, wél multiplier switches) met een unlocked AMD Duron 650 processor en een Alpha PAL6035MUC cooler. Middels het aanpassen van de multiplier strandde de Duron op 800MHz, alles daarboven werd helaas niet stabiel bevonden. Dan was achteraf toch goed tevreden, voor zo'n 300 pieken heb je een proc die een Athlon Classic 750 bij kan houden.

It seems, from other users' reports, that 800MHz is a thoroughly realistic reliable overclock result from any unlocked-multiplier Duron. 850MHz isn't out of the question, and 900MHz might even be possible. But let's say you buy a 600MHz Duron, and only get it to 800. This'll give you 750MHz Athlon grunt for your $AUD215.

A real 750MHz Athlon CPU costs more than twice as much as a 600MHz Duron. It'll pretty much level-peg with an 800MHz P-III, which you may or may not actually be able to buy retail at the moment, and which'll probably cost you $AUD700 or more if you manage to find one. Rarity keeps the price up.

[...] If you're upgrading an old Pentium II machine, but don't want to rip your whole computer apart to install a new motherboard, you should check out Celerons rather than Durons. With a "slotket" adaptor board, most P-II boards will work fine with Celerons up to the 533 model, the fastest based on the old P-II core.

[...] But if you're buying a new motherboard anyway, a goosed-up Duron is a clearly superior option. And the A7V may be the first of the multiplier-adjust motherboards to hit the market, but it's got all the features most users are likely to need. If you must have an ISA slot or two then you're out of luck, but that's about it for A7V shortcomings, really.

Well, what are you waiting for? Go and get yourself some serious CPU power on the cheap!

WebWereld meldt dat Microsoft eergisteren haar nieuwste versie van haar Office-suite heeft gepresenteerd. Het pakket zal Office 10 gaan heten en bevat een nieuwe techniek genaamd 'Tahoe' voor extra internet integratie en ondersteuning voor Microsoft .NET. Hier een gedeelte uit dit artikel:

Naast de verbetering en uitbreiding van de standaard Office-functionaliteiten, zal er ook nieuwe technologie worden uitgebracht onder de codenaam 'Tahoe'.

Met de nieuwe techniek worden de mogelijkheden van internet geïntegreerd in Office, en aangepast aan Microsofts nieuwe .NET (DotNet), de toekomstige opvolger van Windows.

De nieuwe standaard versie zal Office 10 gaan heten. De suite biedt een geïntegreerde zoekmachine, een vernieuwde Powerpoint-versie, en verbeterde functionaliteiten voor woorden tellen en knippen-en-plakken.

Volgens woordvoerders van Microsoft wordt dit de laatste standaardversie van Office. Het bedrijf wil zich daarna gaan wijden aan Office.NET, een geheel op internet gericht product dat de Office-suite via application service providers (asp's) wil aanbieden.

De Tahoe-techniek moet daar al een aanzet toe geven. Microsoft verwacht de nieuwe software begin 2001 op de markt te brengen.

Patrick Schmid van Tom's Hardware Guide heeft een Intel Celeron Overclocking Guide voor ons in elkaar geflanst. Zoals bekend heeft de Celly door de komst van de AMD Duron de eerste plaats in het low-end segment verloren. Toch blijft de CPU een goede keus voor een goedkope upgrade, mede dankzij het feit dat er in de meeste gevallen geen nieuw moederbord nodig is. Het artikel vertelt je welke Celeron's er in omloop zijn en welke het meest geschikt zijn voor overclocking:

The Celeron is inexpensive and a decent performer. Particularly the new models (533A to 600 MHz and more) are an excellent choice for performance freaks on a small budget, as they are around only $100-120 and just perfect for overclocking. All new Celeron CPUs (green FC-PGA package) should reach at least 800 MHz, as they do not differ from the Pentium III at all.

We know that the latest Celerons are Pentium III processors, which did not pass the L2 cache test. In order to reduce the number of defective Pentium III CPUs, Intel disables half of the L2 cache (the part where the error is situated), reduces the cache associativity from 8-way to 4-way, restricts them to 66 MHz at higher multipliers and labels those chips as Celeron.

If you are looking for a way to upgrade your Pentium II system, have an eye at the Mendocino Celeron. Older motherboards should easily be able to host this processor as long as you still get an updated BIOS. Celeron models at 500 and 533 MHz can be obtained for less than $100 today and will significantly speed up an old Pentium II 233-333 system.

All Celerons coming in the green FC-PGA package are equipped with the Coppermine-128 core (533 MHz or faster). I don't recommend buying such a CPU without checking twice if your motherboard is able to provide 1.5 -1.65V. You are in good shape if your board can host one of the new Celerons, but even if the voltage requirements are not met, you can still take advantage of a Celeron 400-533 with Mendocino core.

Is the pen mightier than the keyboard? Mac users may soon be drawing that conclusion, thanks to forthcoming pen-input software from Apple Computer Inc.
Dubbed InkWell and currently in pre-release testing under the code name Rosetta Stone, the software reportedly taps into the handwriting-recognition technology that Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) originally developed for its discontinued Newton line of PDAs.

Besides interpreting users' hand-printed text, sources said, InkWell will enable them to perform a variety of operations -- from opening and closing files to surfing the Web -- via pen input with virtually no practice.

According to sources, InkWell will ship alongside Mac OS X, which is currently due to arrive early in 2001; a version may also be available to users of Mac OS 9.

Apple is reportedly working closely with Wacom Inc. to ensure InkWell's compatibility with the tablet maker's line of pressure-sensitive input devices.

In addition, sources said Apple is considering adding pen-input support to the trackpad of Mercury, the company's next-generation PowerBook G4.

"The idea is to eliminate the need for a keyboard," said one source familiar with Apple's plans.
