Bij Nu.nl las ik dat de heren van de Duitse justitie hebben na recente opdoeking van een kinderporno-site besloten om niet alleen de maker(s) ervan te vervolgen, maar ook alle bezoekers. De site was in korte tijd verantwoordelijk voor zo'n 500.000 pageviews. Via de server-logs probeert men de identiteit van de pedofielen te achterhalen.

De Duitse afdeling van AOL heeft de 10.000 ip-adressen van de bezoekers aan justitie overgedragen. Hoeveel mensen vervolgd zullen worden is nog niet bekend, maar alleen in Noord-Rijnland-Westfalen zijn al 258 verdachten.

Strafvervolging van internetters is op deze schaal nog niet eerder voorgekomen in Duitsland. Justitie zegt dat de site is gevonden door haar internetrechercheurs. Doordat de zaak uitlekte in de media, zijn verdere stappen bemoeilijkt, aldus de woordvoerder.

Volgens de Mitteldeutsche Zeitung is justitie in de deelstaat Saksen-Anhalt donderdag enkele woningen en gebouwen binnengevallen.

Aan de ene kant is het natuurlijk een goede zaak dat dergelijke 'mensen' aangepakt worden, aan de andere kant is het nog maar de vraag of de privacy-wetten dit toelaten, en of dit fenomeen in de toekomst ook gaat voorkomen bij het opdoeken van bijvoorbeeld sites die illegaal mp3's aanbieden.

Ik lees net op iXBT Labs dat Intel vanaf nu alle SECC2 (Slot1) processors ook met de cC0 stepping gaat leveren in plaats van de 'oude' cB0 stepping. De cC0 stepping heeft een iets kleinere die-size en zal daarom in staat moeten zijn om een hogere snelheid te halen dan de oude stepping. De cC0 is al een tijdje in gebruik bij de FC-PGA processor:

Intel announced that its SECC2 CPUs would be using a new core. As you know, Pentium III SECC2 processors used to be based on cB0 core stepping. From now on they will be built on cC0 core, which you should be already familiar with due to the newest FC-PGA CPUs. Core with cC0 stepping is 5% smaller, which allows Intel to reduce the manufacturing expenses and to increase the stability of its products when working at higher frequencies. However, at the same time it should be pointed out that the notorious Pentium III 1.13GHz was also built with cC0 core. Though Intel keeps denying that the problems, which occurred at the frequencies over 1GHz can repeat at lower frequencies as well. So, all the SECC2 processors supporting from 600 to 933Mhz will now use new cores.

Intel heeft Timna vandaag ten grave gebracht, nog voor de officiële marktintroductie van dit low-cost system-on-a-chip design. Oorspronkelijk was het de bedoeling dat Timna een Celeron processor, graphics core, I/O en Rambus memory controller in één enkele chip zou verenigen. Tesamen zou het een ideaal platform voor sub $500 PC's en internet appliances moeten vormen.

Het plan om de Timna systemen te voorzien van Rambus geheugen werd al snel gedropt vanwege de hoge prijs en beperkte produktie van RIMRAM's. Het Rambus probleem zou simpelweg omzeild kunnen worden door toevoeging van een Memory Translator Hub, maar vanwege een bug die dit voorjaar in de MTH chip werd geconstateerd kon dit noodplan geen directe doorgang vinden. Intel was genoodzaakt om alle i820+SDRAM plankjes terug te roepen en moest bovendien de release van Timna uitstellen. Intel is nu van mening dat het niet langer zinvol is om Timna op de markt te brengen. De kosten van het platform zijn te hoog en de prestaties zijn te ver achterop geraakt in vergelijking met low-end desktop processors zoals de Celeron en Duron:

Problems with the memory translator hub (MTH) which would have enabled the entry-level chip to use SDRAM memory rather than the expensive Rambus RIMMs for which it was originally designed, meant that by the time a workable solution had been found, the chip would have missed its market window.

The chip giant conceded that positioning Timna as an entry-level product, while Celerons were available at a lower price, would have been extremely difficult. On the power front, Timna would also have looked distinctly underpowered compared with Duron and Celerons around at the time of its Q1 2001 launch target.

Apple heeft vandaag een dramatische koersval beleefd nadat het Apple management gisterenavond een winstwaarschuwing had afgegeven. De winst van het vierde kwartaal wordt door Apple geschat op 30 tot 33 dollercant per aandeel, een flink stuk lager dan de door analisten en beleggers verwachtte 45 dollarcent. Het nieuws werd met weinig vergevingsgezindheid ontvangen door de aandeelhouders. In de avonduren verloor het aandeel maar liefst 40% van z'n waarde en inmiddels is het verlies afgelopen tot 51%!

De schuld van de tegenvallende winstcijfers legt Apple bij tegenvallende verkopen. De nieuwe PowerMac G4 Cube blijkt weinig aftrek te vinden vanwege de hoge prijs en het broodrooster-design. Bovendien was er sprake van een tegenvallende vraag vanuit de educatieve sector, waar Apple nog steeds sterk vertegenwoordigd is:

Elf kwartalen lang ging het crescendo met Apple. Daar is nu een abrupt einde aan gekomen. De resultaten over het vierde kwartaal zullen niet in de buurt komen van wat analisten verwachtten, zo waarschuwt Apple. De omzet zal uitkomen op ongeveer 1,9 miljard dollar.

Over de winst maken beleggers en analisten zich meer zorgen. Apple denkt op een kwartaalwinst van 110 miljoen dollar uit te komen, oftewel tussen de 30 en 33 cent per aandeel. Dat is fors lager dan de bedragen waarmee beursanalisten eerder rekening hielden: 45 cent per aandeel.

Als oorzaken van de val worden de tegenvallende verkopen van de nieuwe Power Mac G4 Cube genoemd en de slappe vraag vanuit de onderwijssector. Apple had hoge verwachtingen van de kubusvormige computer waarvan de marges een stuk hoger liggen dan de goedkopere iMac.

BikkelZ wees ons naar een interessant stukje op Mac OS Rumors. Terwijl Apple nog druk bezig is om de UMA-2 technologie op de markt te brengen, is men ook al aan de toekomst aan het denken. PowerMacs uitgerust met 4 en 8 processors worden op dit moment getest in een aantal grote hardware testlabs. Ook wordt gespeeld met multi-processing in niet-PowerMac systemen (iBooks, PowerBooks en iMacs).

De SMP strategie is voor Apple onder andere van belang om OS X zo snel mogelijk te laten inburgeren. Qua preformance zijn deze dingen wel interessant: een 8-way 600MHz PowerMac G4 met OS X Beta is in Photoshop (kent Apple ook nog andere benchmarks? ) 65% sneller dan een Windows 2000 bak met een quad Thunderbird 1.1GHz (uiteraard ook met een pre-productie moederbord). Overall wordt een 40% preformance winst geclaimd door de testers.

De vraag is of een multiprocessor laptop nu wel zo handig is voor het stroomgebruik, zelfs als er G4e's worden gebruikt, en hoe Apple de kosten van deze kasten naar beneden denkt te halen.

Another interesting report notes that most, if not all, of these new systems are using Motorola's PowerPC 7410 G4, the new low-power version of the chip announced earlier this week that uses a 0.18 micron process to shrink chip size and reduce power dissipation/operating temperature. This has made possible rumored tests of two and four-G4 configurations of other Macs.

Although these rumors are still in need of much confirmation before they should be used to influence decisions of any importance, MOSR has received numerous pieces of recon suggesting that Apple has tested dual-G4 Powerbook and iBook configurations, and iMacs with at least four processors if not more. In fact, Apple is apparently working on an unusually large number of MP G4 prototypes -- suggesting that the Mac may make greater use of multiprocessing, and far sooner, than once thought.

Paul Allan, mede-oprichter van Microsoft en de op 2 na de rijkste man ter wereld, doet na 25 jaar een stap terug bij Microsoft. Het bedrijf dat net groots zijn 25 jarige bestaan heeft gevierd, heeft nu geen van de beide oprichters meer in het bestuur. Zoals je eerder al hebt kunnen lezen, heeft ook Bill al een ander baantje genomen:

Na 25 jaar dienst bij het bedrijf dat hij samen met Bill Gates oprichtte, doet Paul Allen een stapje terug en verlaat hij het bestuur van Microsoft. Hij zal niet meer zetelen in de raad van bestuur maar wel aanblijven in een raadgevende capaciteit. Het vertrek van de man, die samen met Gates en Steve Ballmer gold als een van de machtigste mensen binnen Microsoft, zou niet het gevolg zijn geweest van interne strubbelingen maar omdat de man al jaren kampt met de ziekte van Hodgkin en zich wil concentreren op filantropisch werk.

Allen, die aan zijn inspanning voor Microsoft een positie als derde rijkste man in de wereld overhield, wordt 'Senior Strategy Adviser' voor het bedrijf. In die hoedanigheid zal hij bezig zijn met nieuwe producten en niet meer met het dagelijks bestuur.

Het is niet de eerste keer dat Paul afscheid neemt, in het begin van 1980 nam hij ook een tijdlang rust om te vechten tegen de ziekte van Hodgkin. Overigens is hij niet de enige die vertrekt; een andere directeur bij Microsoft, Richard Hackborn, neemt ook afscheid na zes jaar in het bestuur gezeten te hebben. Hackborn heeft al een nieuwe baan: hij wordt voorzitter bij Hewlett Packard.

In mijn email-doos vond ik een PDF-je met info over het Pentium 4 moederbord van GigaByte, de GA-8TX. Het bord is voorzien van Intel's 850-chipset, 4 RIMM-banken (max. 2 GB geheugen) en 5 PCI sloten. Verder is on-board audio aanwezig en kunnen overklokkers kiezen uit maar liefst 4 verschillende bussnelheden (100, 105, 110 en 133 MHz). Rondom het Socket-423 zijn 4 gaten aangebracht om je heatsink aan het bord te kunnen verankeren, omdat anders de gigantische installatie met socket en al zou kunnen afbreken.

Je videokaart krijgt een plekje in een AGP Pro slot en er zijn 2 gewone ATA100 aansluitingen aanwezig. Zoals inmiddels gebruikelijk bij GigaByte is het moederbord uitgevoerd in een fancy blauwe kleur. GigaByte gaat uit van een release van de Pentium 4 in week 48 (27 november), zodat het plankje nog mooi geshowed kan worden op Comdex Fall in week 47.

De Duitse site ICN4U heeft een niet zo positieve mededeling voor de Napster-fans. Wat ik op kon maken uit de ietwat brakke vertaling van Altavista is dat rechter Patel wil dat Napster vandaag de servers uitzet. Hoewel dit een tijdelijk oordeel is, pleit dit natuurlijk zeker niet in het voordeel van Napster. De rechter blijft bij zijn standpunt dat de programmeurs van het file-sharing programma expres en bij volle verstand een applicatie hebben gemaakt, waarmee eenvoudig copyrights geschonden kunnen worden. Uiteraard is de advocaat van Napster het niet eens met de beslissing, en zal deze zaak nog niet zo snel helemaal afgelopen zijn:

in the first larger legal proceedings around copyrights in the Internet the American music industry achieved a victory against the Internet music exchange stock exchange Napster. A Richterin of the district court of San Francisco allowed on Wednesday of a provisional order of the federation of the US disk industry (RIAA) and arranged the disconnection of Napster for Friday.

The Richterin Marilyn Hall Patel said after an two-hour hearing, since the violation of copyrights to the wholesale extent would take place, is justified the plaintiffs to implement their copyright. It concerns with the on-line platform a camouflaged music Piraterie. Further Patel accused the accused of consciously a system to have created with which pirat copies could be created and which violate copyrights.

Napster boss Barry announced in an Internet discussion meanwhile to want to fight on different ways for the preservation of the Napster community. The enterprise understands the court decision and the basis for it, rejects it however, said Barry. The Internet service rejects reproaches of the music Piraterie and offers after own view the titles only for private purposes and violates therefore no copyrights.

dyna18 schrijft: "Gelukkig voor het internet is de claim van British Telecom op het patent van de hyperlink in rook opgegaan. Dit vond plaats nadat een oud filmpje uit 1968 boven water kwam, waarin het principe van de muis en hyperlinks wordt gedemonstreerd."

Het bedrijf hoopte een paar maanden geleden geld te kunnen verdienen met een oud patent op hyperlinks, uit 1976. Als BT gelijk zou krijgen, heeft dat grote gevolgen voor internet, dat - letterlijk - van hyperlinks aan elkaar hangt. Er is nu echter een 90-minuten durende film opgedoken waarin het principe van hyperlinks al in 1968 wordt besproken, tijdens een demonstratie van de eerste muis aan de Stanford Universiteit. Acht jaar eerder dan BT, dat daarmee zijn claim verloren ziet gaan.

British Telecom wilde met de claim vooral geld eisen van Amerikaanse providers, dit gaat nu dus niet door.

StorageReview heeft 2 Plextor CDRW drives gereviewed. Het gaat hier om de PX-W124TSi en de PX-W1210TA. De eerste van de 2 is een 12x4x32 SCSI brander met een 4MB grote cache. De tweede drive is een 12x10x32 IDE brander. Opmerkelijk is het kleine 2MB cache, dit is te verklaren door de aanwezige BURN-Proof techniek waardoor geen cd meer hoeft te mislukken. Het is jammer dat de SCSI drive deze feature moet missen. De review van de PX-W124TSi is hier te lezen, en de review van de PX-W1210TA hier. De verschillen tussen beide drives:

Plextor's ATAPI contender comes to the table with many of the same specs as the recently reviewed PX-W124TSi SCSI burner. For example, it writes at a maximum of 12X CLV, reads CDs at 14X-32X CAV speeds, and includes the same 1-year warranty with unlimited toll-free tech support as well as nearly identical accessories in the retail package. Differences include the BURN-Proof technology, 10X rewrite speeds, ATAPI interface, as well as the lack of a fan and only a single LED (cost-cutting choices, no doubt). The LED is set up to illuminate green when the drive is idle with media inserted; yellow when a disc is being read from; and amber when a disc is being written to. This took some getting used to, as every time we saw the green light, we thought the drive was busy when in fact it was idle (just displaying that there was a disc in the drive). Also different are the specified random access times (at 150ms, 10ms quicker than the 12/4/32), the buffer size (2048KB vs. the 12/4/32's 4096KB)

Conclusion

Being as it's our first burner review, we currently have nothing to compare Plextor's 12/4/32 SCSI unit to. However, based on its own merits, we found this drive to perform quite adequately. We encountered no serious issues and test results were more or less as expected.

Our main issue is with the drive's read speeds. We were fairly underwhelmed with its 32X read performance. In fact, we found that it significantly underperformed other 32X readers in our database. However, given the nature and intended use of this drive, we doubt many folks will be buying this to be their main CD-ROM reader. In this light, we do not place much emphasis on its sluggish application-level read speeds.

Writing and rewriting abilities are what this drive is all about. Performance was at or near expectations in all of our timed tests. We were also pleased with its performance in our Unreal Tournament stress test, but wonder how significant its seemingly poor performance in the CPUmark99 stress test is. We will find out as we get our hands on more of the competition.

Conclusion.

What can we say? Sanyo's BURN-Proof technology, as licensed and implemented by Plextor, just plain works. Even our most stringent stress test could not create a coaster with this drive. Performance was excellent across the board…read speeds at 32X are closer to what we've come to expect from dedicated 32X readers, and writing performance was excellent as well. We were especially pleased with the 10X rewrite performance. Those who use CD-RWs a lot will notice a huge boost in performance. Keep in mind, though, that your existing media will still work at only 4X. You'll need to use the included high speed CD-RW until such media becomes more widely available. We've yet to see these in retail stores yet, only online.

Our complaints are few and far between. A single LED that varies its coloration according to what the drive is doing is a great concept. However, in practice we weren't as impressed. We had a difficult time telling between yellow (drive reading) and green (disc in drive, not being read). The amber write color was easily distinguishable, however. In our opinion, splurging for a second LED might've been a better choice. In addition, we feel the buffer could be larger. Sure, BURN-Proof will nearly always save the day, but an extra 2 megs (like most of today's burners have) would keep things running smoothly when the going gets especially tough. The pauses and slowdowns (as BURN-Proof kicks in) would be less frequent, and Sanyo's new technology wouldn't get as much of a workout. Of course, this only applies if you regularly abuse your system while burning CDs…in our experience most light-to-medium computing tasks aren't enough to drain the 2 meg buffer. Finally, we wonder why Plextor chose not to include CD Res-Q with this drive when it's included with the SCSI 12/4/32.

Koen Crijns schrijft: "Op Hardwareinfo.net is vandaag een test geplaatst van de Hercules 3D Prophet II MX videokaart met de nVidia GeForce 2 MX chip. Zoals we allen weten is de GeForce 2 MX een chip met een zeer goede prijs/prestatie verhoudig. Wat opviel is dat de 3D Prophet II MX ongekend goed overklokbaar is, als je er zelf een cooler op schroeft: de frequentie verhoging van 175/166 naar 240/225 had een prestatiewinst van bijna 40% tot gevolg":

Na de benchmark resultaten te hebben gezien kunnen we de conclusie trekken: bij de meest gebruikte resolutie (1024 x 768) is de GeForce 2 MX gemiddeld zo’n 25% langzamer dan de super-snelle GeForce 2 GTS. Geen slechte score als we bedenken dat de prijs van de Hercules 3D Prophet II MX meer dan de helft lager is dan die van de Hercules 3D Prophet II! We kunnen dus absoluut concluderen dat de GeForce 2 MX een heel interessante 3D chip is, zeker aangezien de mogelijkheden van de GeForce 2 MX exact gelijk zijn aan die van de GeForce 2 GTS. Ik durf zelfs te beweren dat iedereen die zichzelf geen ‘diehard gamer’ noemt met een GeForce 2 MX videokaart vele malen beter af is dan met een GeForce 2 GTS videokaart. Met het geld dat je uitspaart, kun je genoeg andere leuke dingen doen.

De Hercules 3D Prophet II MX is, zoals we dat van Hercules gewend zijn, een goed verzorgd product. Dat de kaart met enige aanpassing ook nog eens wonderbaarlijk goed overklokbaar is, is natuurlijk mooi meegenomen. Met een prijs van rond de 400 gulden is de kaart ook zeker niet te duur en zal hij bij veel personen precies in het budget passen.

Eind conclusie: bijna 75% van de prestaties voor 50% van de prijs en dan ook nog eens in een mooi Hercules jasje. Reden genoeg voor een Hardwareinfo.net Silver Award!

Volgens The Register wordt de delay van de Pentium 4 veroorzaakt worden door chipset en mobo problemen. OEMs zouden pas enkele weken geleden in het bezit zijn gebracht van de 'Garibald' Pentium 4 reference borden en dat zou hen te weinig tijd geven om het P4 platform goed te kunnen testen. De info van The Register is weinig concreet, maar wat in ieder geval al eerder is opgevallen is de rust aan het P4 mobo front. Tot op heden zijn er uitsluitend specs uitgelekt over de Tehama mobo's van Gigabyte, Tyan en Asus:

As we reported here several weeks back, tier one vendors were delivered test samples of Intel's own reference motherboard for the Pentium 4, codenamed Garibaldi. That is completely insufficient time for the vendors to test the microprocessor properly, and come up with their own tweaks and tricks to make it sing properly.

One vendor told The Reg then that the Garibaldi platform he had been sent didn't even have everything soldered onto the motherboard.

Japsie wees ons op een interessant stukje in de FAQ van Micron's Integrated Product Group divisie, waarin het een en ander wordt uitgelegd over de toepassing van embedded DRAM in video chips. Zoals je wellicht nog kan herinneren, werd Rendition in 1998 overgenomen door Micron. Rendition was één van de eerste fabrikanten van 3D kaarten en hun tweede generatie V2x00 accelerator, die o.a. werd gebruikt in de Stealth II SS20 van Diamond, was destijds behoorlijk populair vanwege z'n goede price/performance. Plannen over een TNT2 concurrent met dubbele video uitgang (iets wat we later terugzagen op de Matrox G400) werden helaas in de ijskast gezet.

Hoewel Rendition sinds de overname door Micron geen enkel nieuw produkt heeft afgeleverd, blijkt er nog steeds leven in de toko te zitten. Volgend jaar wil Micron een nieuwe videochip demonstreren die gebruik maak van embedded DRAM. Door het integreren van (een deel van) het videogeheugen op de videochip kunnen veel hogere snelheden behaald worden dan bij het gebruik van losse geheugen chips (met hetzelfde idee bakken de BitBoys lucht van hun eXtreme Bandwidth Architecture) . Micron heeft het over bandbreedtes van 16GB/s of zelfs meer:

Why is embedded DRAM important?

Embedded DRAM is a natural consequence of the evolution of semiconductor technology. Currently, combining logic and DRAM on the same die is more expensive that fabricating them separately. Today, there are a few applications that require the size, speed, and power advantages of embedded DRAM. Embedded DRAM can dramatically improve the price/performance of certain applications that need bandwidths far in excess of that which will be achieved externally with 64-bit, 128-bit, or even 256-bit wide memory buses. Embedded DRAM allows bus widths of greater than 1024 bits, yielding bandwidths that exceed 16GB/sec.

Are you planning to manufacture embedded memory?

Yes, Micron is planning to manufacture embedded DRAM technology (RAMCore). Initially, Micron will develop single chip graphics accelerators which utilize our embedded DRAM technology. A high-performance graphics core, combined with embedded memory, can dramatically improve the price/performance of image acceleration by utilizing far greater on-chip bandwidth coupled with more flexible granularity.

Why did Micron acquire Rendition?

Rendition was acquired by Micron Technology to enable embedded DRAM technology. This embedded technology will be brought to market in a variety of future products and will use embedded DRAM to achieve new levels of system performance at competitive prices. The development of embedded DRAM products requires the combination of DRAM and logic/graphics processes. Rendition's technology has been refined, enhanced and rebuilt to take advantage of the tremendous bandwidth that can be delivered by embedded DRAM. Micron plans to demonstrate this technology next year.

AMD heeft gisteren een press release losgelaten waarin ze aankondigen dat Robert J. Rivet de nieuwe chief financial officer gaat worden bij AMD. Robert Rivet heeft 3 jaar bij Motorola gewerkt als vice president and director of finance. Het probleem is nu dat Hector de J. Ruiz, de nieuwe baas van Rivet, een contract heeft getekend met Motorola waarin staat dat hij geen senior managers bij Motorola mag wegkapen. Het lijkt er op dat hij deze overeenkomst niet na is gekomen, en om deze reden wordt AMD aangeklaagd:

Advanced Micro Devices said it named former Motorola executive Robert Rivet as chief financial officer, and Motorola immediately sued AMD president Hector Ruiz for luring Rivet away.

Rivet, 46, spent three years as a senior vice president and finance director for Motorola's semiconductor group, AMD said. He had reported to Ruiz, who left Motorola in January for AMD, Intel's main rival in the market for PC processors.

Ruiz signed an agreement saying he wouldn't recruit senior managers at Motorola to join him at AMD, Motorola spokesman Albert Brashear said. Motorola, which filed its lawsuit in Travis County, Texas, said it paid Ruiz a "substantial six- figure amount" in exchange. Motorola wants to prevent any further actions by Ruiz that would violate the agreement, Brashear said.

"We intend to enforce our agreements," Motorola president Bob Growney said in a statement. "Motorola upheld its end of the bargain, but Mr. Ruiz did not."

Frank Völkel van Tom's Hardware guide heeft een stukje geschreven over hoe je Asus A7V aan te passen om hogere Core voltages mogelijk te maken. Er wordt gebruik gemaakt van exact dezelfde methode als bij deze wazige jap: het plaatsen van een 24K Ohm weerstandje ergens op de VRM module. Deze simpele ingreep maakt het mogelijk om voltages tussen de 1,37 en 2,32 volt in te stellen in plaats van tussen de 1,10 en 1,85. Dat deze modificatie zin heeft bewijst Tom's Hardware Guide ook, een Duron 750 kon met 2,11 volt op 1000MHz lopen en een 1GHz Athlon kon zelfs op 1133MHz lopen :

This relatively simple retrofit of the Asus A7V that can be done in a few minutes packs a punch: The higher core voltages of up to 2.32 Volts lets every Duron and Athlon CPU operate at the limit.

While the regular Asus A7V only offers a maximum voltage of 1.85 Volts, and most processors become unstable when overclocked, the altered board gives a very good impression. For example a Duron 750 can be overclocked 30 percent, resulting in a maximum clock frequency of 1000 MHz.

With the fast Athlon processors the possible improvements in clock frequency are rather limited, however: In our test we succeeded in running an Athlon 1000 at a maximum of 1133 MHz, always under the condition of keeping the processor safely alive and the system stable.

Nevertheless, retrofitting an Asus A7V is definitely worth it: The resistor costs less then 10 cents and the board is ready for overclocking future AMD processors past the 1000 MHz limit.

Voor mensen die een Thunderbird of Duron willen kopen, maar nog twijfelen over het moederbord dat ze het beste kunnen gebruiken heeft Alereon.org een artikel online gezet waarin de Abit KT7 en de Asus A7V met elkaar worden vergeleken.

Het verschil in preformance is minimaal (in het voordeel van Asus), maar de Abit is door het jumperloze ontwerp makkelijker te gebruiken.

The Sisoft Sandra CPU test and multimedia test yield very little difference between the two boards, this is what I expected, anything else would have been a red flag for a problem. In the memory test, the FPU/Memory test shows about a 1.4% advantage for the Asus board and on the ALU/Memory test the gap widens with about a 5.3% advantage for the Asus. This extra memory performance shows about a 1-2 frame advantage for the Asus in my quake 3 tests, not much, but still another win for Asus. Moldyn and QMC show again that the two are closely matched as they should be, these are CPU dependant tests, they had better be neck and neck. The Primordia test was one I was really hoping would show some difference between these two heavyweights, unfortunately they performed so well that the scores are nearly identical (check here and you'll see some very competitive scores that I submitted with A7V results). This just shows how competitive these two boards are.

Conclusion

Results say the Asus is the marginal winner, ease of use says the Abit. My choice is the Abit since I don't have to mess with any jumpers or switches, I hated doing that so much. Stability isn't a factor either, both would not crash no matter what I did to them, perfect stability. So good they made my Abit KA7 look like a chump. Hope this makes the your decision between the two a little easier.

Het lijkt erop dat de release datum van de Intel Pentium 4 met nog een paar weken wordt vertraagt. In plaats van een release datum rond halloween (30 oktober) heeft Intel de release datum nogmaals verlaat, deze keer met minstens 3 weken. Hierdoor zal de release nu op 20 november of later plaatsvinden, aldus enkele PC fabrikanten. Deze vertraging komt boven op een andere van een paar weken, en volgens CNET zijn de PC fabrikanten er verre van blij mee:

Two PC makers said today that Intel notified them the processor would not be ready for delivery around Halloween, as expected, while sources at a third manufacturer said Intel indicated it may not arrive by then. The Pentium 4 is not expected until the week of Nov. 20 and possibly later.

[...] "Pentium 4 has been scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter, and that remains unchanged," said an Intel spokesman, who declined to comment on exact dates.

One PC maker expressed exasperation at Pentium 4's delay and Intel's inability to give a firm date for the processor's release. Others said Intel had told them absolutely the processor would ship three weeks late.

"I can't tell you how frustrating this is," said a source at a PC maker that requested anonymity. "It's like one glitch after another."

Nog geen week nadat Tiny PC en Micron Electronics zich in het AMD kamp vervoegden, heeft Vobis besloten om Athlon processors in hun systeempjes toe te gaan passen. Vobis is de grootste retailer van Duitsland en heeft een sterke positie op de Europese markt. Afgezien van het feit dat wij rasechte tweakers natuurlijk nooit gezien willen worden in de nabijheid van een Vobis-bak, is dit wel weer een leuke opsteker voor AMD:

Deze divisie gaat onder meer over de marketing van server en workstation produkten: [/break] Bob Mitton is the division marketing manager for Enterprise Products for the Computation Products Group at AMD. His responsibilities include server and workstation product marketing.

Mitton came to AMD in 1999 after 10 years in product marketing at Sun Microsystems, in graphics software, hardware, entry servers, and most recently in charge of the entry workstation product line. Prior to Sun, Mitton worked at Daisy Systems as software engineer.

Volgens bronnen van The Register en MacCentral wordt de Motorola G4e (ook bekend als G4+) pas volgend jaar zomer gereleased. Blijkbaar heeft Motorola geen trek in een tweede G4-500 fiasco en gooien ze het op een erg conservatieve schatting. Vorig jaar beloofde Apple met veel enthousiasme al in september 500MHz G4 systemen, terwijl deze uiteindelijk pas een half jaar later leverbaar werden. Apple werd genoodzaakt om z'n complete G4 line-up te downgraden, met alle bijkomstige negatieve publiciteit als gevolg. Motorola kreeg de volle shit over zich geen toen het door Apple als schuldige van het drama werden aangewezen. Hoewel dit laatste niet helemaal rechtvaardig is, werd wel duidelijk dat Motorola vette troubles had (en heeft) met de yields van hun wonderprocessor. Dit probleem werd groter toen Intel en AMD zich vol overgave geconcentreerden op het doorbreken van de 1GHz barrière.

Anyway, het zier er naar uit dat Apple voorlopig blijft kampen met een groot kloksnelheids-verschil ten opzichte van de Athlon, Pentium III en Pentium 4. Wellicht lukt het Motorola om tussentijds acceptabele yields te halen op G4's met een kloksnelheid van meer dan 500MHz, maar dergelijke kleine verbetering zetten weinig zoden aan de dijk... en als de G4e volgend jaar dan toch eindelijk zijn debuut maakt op een verwachte kloksnelheid van 700MHz tot 1GHz, dan zitten Intel en AMD al weer vrolijk op snelheden van 1,5 tot 2GHz:

MacCentral's own mole showed Motorola's new-found conservatism when he finally admitted that Apple would be able to ship product based on the chip by "mid-summer" 2001. Given the problems Motorola had getting the yields right on the PPC 7400, which is still stuck at 500MHz, and the trouble it got into with Apple - remember Apple's damning complaint against the chipmaker in its autumn 1999 fiscal statement? - it's not surprising Motorola is playing it cautious.

[...] That said, since Apple seems keen on launching product before chip supply is there - as per the original Power Mac G4 launch - we reckon we could see a G4 Plus-based Mac launched sooner than that, possibly around May's Worldwide Developers Conference.

Either way, it's a good bet that Power Macs driven by the G4 Plus will be showcased at next summer's MacWorld Expo in New York - probably as successor to the dual-7400 G4s.

Voodoo Extreme meldt dat er een niet-officiële patch is uitgebracht waarmee je de nieuwe Voodoo5 drivers met snelheidsverheerlijkende Geometry Asist functies kunt gebruiken op een oude Voodoo3. In het onderstaande mailtje wordt uitgelegd welke register wijzigingen je moet maken om de drivers aan de praat te krijgen:

Once you find it, change the "0000" in the .reg file with this number,
save change and double click on this file !

Volgens een schatting van Mercury Research is de produktie van 1GHz Athlons bijna 10 keer zo hoog als de produktie van GigaPIII's. AMD zou in het afgelopen kwartaal ongeveer 58.000 1GHz processors verkocht hebben, terwijl Intel bleven steken op circa 6000 stuks. Het goede nieuws is dat er indicaties zijn, die aangeven dat er bij de hoger geklokte PIII's sprake is van verbeterende yields:

There are signs that Intel is making a recovery in the high-end segment this quarter. Intel has a lead over AMD in clock speeds greater than 800MHz but less than 1GHz. This indicates that Intel's yields are improving in the high-margin segment, McCarron said. But AMD was alone at the top for a while and this has won it respect. According to Mercury Research estimates, AMD sold 58,000 units of the 1GHz Athlon in the last quarter, while Intel sold a paltry 6,000 PIIIs at that speed. "AMD is the only one yielding at that speed and Intel just couldn't do it," McCarron said.

MrX schrijft: "In een onderzoek naar de krapte van IT mensen in de VS kwam men tot de conclusie dat het probleem met name werd veroorzaakt door slecht management. Veel prioriteit gaat uit naar het recruiteren van mensen, maar omdat ze daarna slecht worden behandeld veranderen ze (te) vaak van baan, waarbij veel kennis verloren gaat. Sony heeft bekend gemaakt dat zij hun doelstellingen wat betreft de produktie van Playstation II consoles dit jaar vanwege toeleveringsproblemen niet zullen halen. Het directe gevolg van deze problemen is dat er tijdens de Noord Amerikaanse release van de PS2 slechts 500.000 units beschikbaar zijn. Dit is de helft minder dan het oorspronkelijk geplande aantal van 1 miljoen. Sony wenst niet te zeggen bij welke componenten er sprake is van een schaarste:

Er zijn mensen die geloven dat in de toekomst iedereen thuis een 3D printer zal bezitten. Huidige 3D printers die gebruikt worden door ontwerpers om snel een model c.q. prototype van hun product te krijgen kosten nu ongeveer 70.000 gulden, en kunnen maar met 1 materiaal omgaan. Rik Knoppers van het TNO meent dat mede door een recente doorbraak in de techniek (3D kleurenprinten) 3D printers die meerdere materialen combineren niet meer ver weg zijn.

Stephen Danforth is in Amerika met een soortgelijk project bezig. Hij is van mening dat als het goed aangepakt wordt binnen enkele jaren 3D printers op de markt kunnen zijn voor zo'n 2500 gulden per stuk:

But the technique most likely to be first into your local electronics store is 3D ink-jet printing. The familiar 2D version deposits ink, but the 3D ink-jet lays down droplets of hot, liquid plastic. The plastic hardens as it cools, building the desired pattern layer by layer. An alternative ink-jet technique, developed in 1989 by Emanuel Sachs and Michael Cima at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, combines sintering, gluing and droplet technologies: it sprays fine droplets of glue onto specific points on a powder bed, which sticks the powder together in the right places (click on thumbnail below for Diagram). Then another layer of powder is deposited, rolled flat and glued: the finished product emerges when the layers are complete and the unglued powder--which provides support while the structure is growing--is blown away.

They can also make them stronger than the cast or forged originals, because the printer can carefully arrange the microstructure of the metal. The product can be lighter, too. Computer programs could minimise the weight of an axle, for example, by working out exactly where the metal ought to go. This optimum design may turn out to have a fiendishly complex internal structure that's hard to make by conventional means. With 3D printing that limitation disappears. "Geometric complexity is largely irrelevant," Danforth says. "You can design the internal and external geometry of a part, and its electrical, mechanical and thermal properties exactly how you want them to be."

When asked to predict what that will be, the experts all turn into a kid's best friend. Never mind the huge implications for high-tech industry, 3D printing is being hailed by many as the "Santa Claus machine". "Toy manufacturers will put their file of Mickey Mouse on the Internet and people will simply pay to download it," says Chris Ryall of Warwick University.
