Kyle van HardOCP heeft een review geschreven over de Copper Orb. Deze Orb wordt _niet_ geproduceerd door Thermaltake, en is gewoon een imitatie. Deze koeler beloofd het beste van twee werelden te combineren: de prijs van de Golden Orb's en de performance van de Alpha's (dmv. een koperen onderkant). Dit blijkt een jammerlijke mislukking te zijn: volgens Kyle is dit het type koeler wat je zelfs gratis niet wilt hebben: de kans is groot dat je, je CPU beschadigd en daarnaast presteert hij ook nog voor geen meter :

What do you say? The Copper Orb pretty much sucked. Is it meant to be used only on CPUs that produce much less heat than a screaming TBird? Dunno. Is the clamp meant only to be used CPUs with a support or spacer of some kind? Dunno. It about rendered a $500 CPU useless and then did NOT cool it worth a damn.

I am usually pretty open minded about negative results and look for explanations in places where WE could have gone wrong in our testing. We always give the benefit of the doubt. In this case, the Copper Orb shows to be pretty much trash for any [H]ard|OCPer or performance buff out there. I have my doubts whether or not it would even make a good doorstop, but we will find out soon.

I think it is nothing more than a poser HSF trying to rip off the good press surrounding the Golden Orb and the Alpha line of coolers. If you even think about getting one of these at this point you might as well go ahead, because if you don't heed this warning, you will most likely do something stoopid enough to tear up your box anyway! Now the retailer that we got it from reports that it performs better than the Golden Orb and equal to an Alpha, but we did not get even close to the same results. Did we simply get a bad unit? I dunno that either, but you would think they would pick out a "good one" to send to us.

Is it cheap? Yes it is and rightly so. But even if you could buy this thing for $1.00 and it cooled much better than the competition, the damage factor that it might inflict on your CPU scares the hell out of me. From my short experience, stay FAR FAR AWAY from the Copper Orb.

Bij AnandTech is een review verschenen van de Abit SP50 speakers en AU10 geluidskaart. De geluidskaart is gebaseerd ForteMedia FM801 chip die volledige 5.1 speaker ondersteuning biedt samen met softwarematige ondersteuning voor EAX 1 en A3D 1. De SP50 speakerset bestaat uit 4 identieke satellietspeakers, 1 center speaker en een flinke subwoofer. Deze audioset is dus duidelijk gericht op de consument die de PC wil transformeren in een thuisbioscoop. Voor dit doel is deze set ook prima te gebruiken, maar volgens de (te IMHO) veeleisende reviewer zijn de speakers niet echt goed:

ABIT has made a strong first effort with their entrance into the computer sound market. They set the basis for many promising ideas—the integrated amplifier with large heat sinks, the remote control for DVDs, and the metal casing for the speakers. However, some of their compromises on quality in the audio chip on the AU10 card and the extensive dependence on software based features serve to limit the performance of the system. With a retail price around $279, it presents a certain financial commitment to the sound system. The speaker set seems to fall short of these expectations in that it could not fully replace a home theatre system, nor serve as the strongest gaming system because of the CPU utilization issues.

[...] Sonically, the sound is a little tinny, most likely a result of the audio chip used for D/A conversion. This affected the overall quality of the system as it was noticeable during both DVD and music playback. The AU10 sound card is designed fairly specifically to provide surround sound playback; it is not destined to be a home musician’s card as it isn’t geared to getting audio or MIDI info into the computer very easily. The lack of SPDIF support on the sound card was disappointing, especially that it was not on the same development and manufacturing track because this indicates to me that ABIT is emphasizing this feature, which could increase the audio quality of connections to the card. Be wary of buying a card that doesn’t have the accessories you want in production as of the purchase date.

[...] The ABIT SP50 Home Theater System and AU10 6 channel audio card package are slightly above average for a computer speaker system, though falls short of high sonic quality. The speaker system fulfills its specifications, but higher expectations could have led to a better system with more warmth in the tonal quality. It is a promising first step for ABIT, indicating that some strong engineering went into the design. Building upon this experience could produce some excellent products in the future, but for now, their system is best suited for use in a small room with limited listening requirements.

Zoals je ziet zijn deze speakers volgens de reviewer slechts 'slightly above average', iets wat ik eerlijk gezegd niet kan geloven als ik naar de specs kijk en de conclusie lees van Tom's review. Maar zolang er nog maar twee reviews zijn over dit product is het erg moeilijk om te zeggen wie gelijk heeft, en daarnaast komt natuurlijk nog dat audiokwaliteit heel erg subjectief is.

Bij 3D Alpha heeft men een review geschreven van de Tyan Tiger 133, een dual Slot 1 moederbord, net als de MSI 694D Pro en Gigabyte 6VXD7 gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Gereviewd wordt een nieuwe revisie 'F' van het moederbord, waar volgens Tyan alle bugs die bij de vorige revisies te vinden waren verholpen zijn. Deze versie was dan ook opmerkelijk stabiel:

Now, the easy installation isn't the only good thing about this board. It's stability is unmatched. Yes, I know, a bold statement, but in all of my testing of motherboard I have never seen a board put up with the stuff that this one has. I ran a Quake3 loop with Prime95 running in the background, while downloading of the internet, while running RC5 for 91 hours (that's a lot of MP3's) and then my lovely girlfreind decided one night (I assume it was her, she denies it...) to turn the computer off. So I did it again, for 72 more hours, and in all these hours (91+72=163 hours) there wasn't a single crash. Not bad... (oh, and on a side note, I can't believe the overclocked GeForce SDR I have in this thing held up to it either!)[break]Over de snelheid viel ook weinig te klagen. I mean, I was so damn excited about this board, and then they go and smack me in the head with that. I have to say, if there was one reason I wouldn't go any tell everyone and their Mom to buy this board, this would be it.

ZDNet schrijft dat Handspring op 19 oktober een Visor PDA zal introduceren met een 16 bits kleuren schermpje, te weten de Visor Prism. Dit is de eerste PDA van Handspring met een kleurenscherm. De Visor Prism is bedoeld voor de handheld gamer, en er zal minstens één spel bij geleverd worden. De prijs wordt 449 dollar, 150 dollar meer dan de monochrome versie met goedkopere batterijen :

Handspring's first PDA with a color screen is the $449 Visor Prism. Palm released its color IIIc earlier this year, but the display was limited to 256 colors. The Prism will have 16-bit color screen generating 65,536 colors and will be pushed as a game player. It will be bundled with at least one game.

Competing PDAs from Compaq and HP, based on Microsoft's Pocket PC platform, have been using color displays for about three years.

The Prism will be based on the 30MHz Motorola Dragonball processor and will come with 8MB of RAM. It will be powered by a lithium-ion battery, which Handspring says charges in 90 minutes.

The Prism will use Version 3.5 of the Palm OS and be slightly thicker than currently available Visors.

The second unit will be called the Visor Platinum and will cost $299. The Platinum will also come with a 30MHz Motorola Dragonball processor and 8MB of RAM, but its screen will be monochrome and it will not have rechargeable batteries. Instead it will run on 2 AAA alkaline batteries.

Newsbytes bericht ons dat Intel en NEC samen een alliantie hebben gevormd die grootschalig gaan samenwerken bij de ontwikkeling van servers. In Japan is NEC de grootste leveranciers van servers, en NEC wil deze positie graag uitbreiden naar andere werelddelen. NEC en Intel zullen ook gezamenlijke roadmaps uitbrengen waarop de release van chipsets en systemen worden genoemd. Kennis van servers wordt compleet gedeeld tussen de twee bedrijven:

Development of the joint systems will be carried out by either company, and delivered to the other for distribution. The alliance covers the sharing of computer server technology between the two companies.

NEC zegt dat er waarschijnlijk binnenkort meer overeenkomsten tussen Intel en NEC zijn.

CNET.com en vele andere sites weten te vertellen dat Dell een nieuw, online-winkelcentrum gaat opzetten. Op deze site worden niet alleen Dell's eigen producten verkocht, maar ook producten van andere partijen die klant zijn van Dell. De site zal geopend worden op 30 oktober, en de eerste 3 bedrijven die van de partij zijn zijn Pitney Bowes, 3M en Motorola. Dell heeft al eerder sites gehad waarop zij andere producten verkocht, maar dit keer beheert Dell het alleen maar; de verkoop, verzending en afhandeling wordt door de partijen zelf gedaan. De winst voor Dell komt dan ook ergens anders vandaan:

Rather than make a profit from selling products, Dell instead will collect a transaction fee for each purchase, Hampton said. The size of the fee will vary by product. The company will also see revenues from providing integration and hosting services.

"It is a different business model than how DellWare works," Hampton said. Asked if Dell is becoming a retailer, Hampton replied, "I'd say we're operating as a mall owner."

Chris Angelini van Sharky Extreme heeft vandaag zijn review van de Asus A7V het net op gegooid. Zoals gebruikelijk is SE laat, maar ze doen het wel uitgebreid: in 10 pagina's wordt uitgelegd waarom dit een zeer geschikt bordje voor je Thunderbird of Duron is. In alle testen bleek het bord sneller dan de Gigabyte 7ZX en FIC AZ11 KT133 moederborden, en bovendien werden alle stabiliteitstests met succes afgelegd. Het enige mobo dat volgens Sharky Extreme beter zou kunnen zijn is de Abit KT7-RAID, maar die hadden ze niet tot hun beschikking:

Bij TweakTown is een review verschenen over de Mouse Bungee. De Mouse Bungee is volgens de fabrikant een handig apparaatje waarmee je bijna het gevoel van draadloos kan krijgen bij een staartmuis. Volgens de reviewer blijkt de Mouse Bungee inderdaad zijn werk te doen, en daarnaast ziet ie er ook wel redelijk uit, dus wat wil je nog meer?

What, your kidding aren't you? This is what I thought when Everglide contacted us asking if we would like to do a review of the new "Mouse Bungee" mouse control device. According to the box the Mouse Bungee will, "Wipe out mousecord snags and drags!" I have seen products like this a few years ago which archive the same purpose, the Mouse Bungee is by far more sexier and efficient. Now your asking "How can one of these things be more efficient?" Simple, they take up less room and work in a more effective way. Also, according to the box the Mouse Bungee is perfect for any desktop, and if you do not have a cordless mouse, you shouldn't experience any "compatibility problems". Heh!

[...] The installation of the Mouse Bungee was dead simple, any drunken sailor would be capable of such a task. I believe this product serves it's purpose, quite well indeed. The only "fault" I could find was the feat on the base of the Mouse Bungee, I thought they could have been a little more "sticky" so the Mouse Bungee wouldn't have had a chance "moving". Although, now of said that I might as well go ahead and contradict myself. The Mouse Bungee is only going to move if you literally pull the cord (or mouse) with force. I was impressed with the Mouse Bungee and it did help improve the smoothness and motion of the mouse, it's also nice not having to "un-snag" the mouse cord like when not having a device of this kind. Personally, I'll be using the sexy Mouse Bungee for a while to come... 7/10

WinInformant meldt dat Microsoft hoogstwaarschijnlijk bezig is met de derde grote bugsschoonmaak voor Office 2000. Om het Service Pack te installeren zal de voorgaande SR1a benodigd zijn. Vreemd genoeg heeft Microsoft aangegeven de update niet duidelijk te gaan aankondigen op de Office Update pagina. Vanaf deze site zal het bestand echter wel te downloaden zijn wanneer het 14 oktober beschikbaar gesteld zal worden. Waarom zo'n huge bugfix niet rechtstreeks op Microsoft's frontpage gezet zal worden is mij een raadsel, iedereen is er toch mee gebaat lijkt me. Ook zullen de Office-versies die naar de winkels gaan niet geüpdate worden:

According to an unconfirmed report that I received last night, Microsoft is working on a third major bug fix release for its Office 2000 product, which it will curiously call "Service Pack 2" instead of "Service Release 2." Office 2000 SP2 follows Office 2000 SR1a with an October 14th release date, and the patch will require that SR1a is installed first.

And unlike the previous collections of bug fixes for Office 2000, SP2 will apparently be "patch-only," meaning that Microsoft will not reissue the full product with these fixes preinstalled, as it did with SR1a. The document I received noted that Office SP2 will contain all of the post-SR1a public patches and updates for Office 2000.

Microsoft is designing Office 2000 SP2 for corporate environments and will, as such, not advertise it heavily or even offer it directly from the Office Update Web site, according to a marketing FAQ viewed by WinInfo Daily Update. The SP2 release is really just a way to give corporations a simple way to roll out numerous bug fixes at a single time, so SP2 will come in an administrative version that can be rolled into an Office installation share. The other SP2 version, the so-called client version, will update individual users' Office 2000 SR1a installation.

Zakalwe bracht ons een linkje richting www.osxonintel.com, waar men een petitie is gestart die Apple ertoe moet bewegen om een x86 versie van MacOS X uit te brengen. Zoals je wellicht weet is Darwin, de basis van MacOS X, ook beschikbaar voor het Intel platform. Alle bovenliggende zaken zoals Aqua, Quartz en andere interface meuk worden uitsluitend voor de PowerPC ontwikkeld. De kans dat Apple daadwerkelijk een volledig MacOS X pakket voor Intel hardware uit gaat brengen lijkt me zo goed als nihil, maar het ondertekenen van de petitie kan natuurlijk nooit kwaad doen...

The purpose of this web site is to let Apple know that OS X on Intel is a path worth pursuing. Most either cannot or will not buy the Apple hardware necessary to run this operating system. Some would like to use OS X on additional computers, not just Macintosh machines. We know that this OS will run on Intel platforms, there are even early beta copies of Mac OS X for Intel. Although this operating system is Apple's property to do with as they wish, the Intel platform has dominated the PC industry. Ignoring this platform will be a mistake on Apple's part. With the rising popularity of alternative operating systems for Intel such as linux, the time may be ripe for Apple to introduce it's first Intel operating system.

Rhapsody on Intel Advocacy is a group that has been around for awhile (thus the name) and can be found here : http://www.of.org/rhaptel/. Their site includes a good description of what you can do to convince Apple to produce OS X for the Intel platform. Apparently the email address listed there no longer works, but there's still some good information.

By signing this petition you are indicating that, for whatever reason, you want to see Mac OS X running on the Intel platform. Darwin is the base of Mac OS X, and Apple has released this to the open source community. Darwin is not the issue here... although it is the "heart" of the Mac OS X operating system, it's not the whole package. We want the whole package.

De nieuwe versie van de Flat-Fee test van Wish zal erg gaan lijken op Quickonline's "Happy Hour"-idee. In de nieuwe test zal het mogelijk zijn om, naar eigen keus, 2 uur per dag gebruik te maken van het Internet (zonder limiet aan inbelsessies of dataverkeer). Huidige testers die zich vóór 25 september nog uitschrijven, hoeven niets te betalen aan Wish, anders "zal het geld wel van je rekening worden afgeschreven".

De resultaten van de huidige flat fee test laten een zeer gevarieerd gebruikers patroon zien. Een aantal testers gebruiken de huidige test als een 24/7 verbinding. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat we de kwaliteit van het WISH netwerk niet kunnen garanderen en dat we niet iedere tester een internet connectie kunnen bieden voor een redelijke prijs.

De RIAA is lekker op dreef met het aanklagen van allerlei organisaties die volgens hun copyright schenden en vervolgens volgen wij trouwe Nederlanders weer eens de Amerikanen en worden dus ook Nederlandse Napster "look-alikes", zoals MP3 Downloader van ComTry aangeklaagd. Dit programma shared geen MP3's, maar zoekt ze op in de databases van Scour Exchange en Gnutella. Verder is er de gelegenheid voor aankomende bands om hun nummers te sharen, iets wat tot nu toe al 3 bands gedaan hebben.

Wanneer de makers bericht kunnen verwachten van Stichting Brein (een samenzwering van Buma Stemra, platen-, film- en gamesindustrie) is nog niet duidelijk:

Wanneer de eerste Nederlandse softwaremakers een brief op de mat van Brein kunnen verwachten, kan Kuik niet zeggen. Student Marijn Otte – maker van MP3 Downloader – is niet bang voor een rechtszaak: "Het risico is inderdaad groot, zoiets moet gewoon een keer gebeuren." MP3 Downloader heeft ongeveer 5000 unieke gebruikers per dag. Hiermee strijkt Otte naar eigen zeggen een 'aardige bijverdienste' op middels de advertentieverkoop.

Lost Circuits heeft een vergelijking van drie snelle 150MHz CAS2 reepjes in elkaar gemikt. Het testveld bestond uit een HSDRAM 150 reep van Enhanced Memory Sytems en twee PC133 CAS2 DIMMen van Corsair en Mushkin. Het HSDRAM reepje kwam weinig verassend als de best overklokbare DIMM uit de test en bereikte op de i815 chipset een maximale kloksnelheid van 166MHz bij een CAS latency van 2 cycles. De Muskin reep trok maximaal 154MHz en de Corsair DIMM ging tot 153,5MHz:

All DIMMs included in this roundup by far exceeded not only the performance standards set by the industry but also our own expectations since there is no doubt that the Corsair PC133 CL2, the HSDRAM 150 and the Mushkin PC-133 Rev 2 DIMMs all woulc qualify as PC150 CAS-2 DIMMs if such category were to exist in industry standards.

Alternatively, all three DIMMs could qualify as PC166 CAS-3, that is, HSDRAM 150 even runs at that speed at CAS2.

Goed nieuws voor de ICT-sector. Voor de komende jaren is de regering van plan meer geld uit te gaan geven aan informatie- en communicatietechnologie. Zo zal er extra geld beschikbaar komen voor onder andere onderzoek, beveiliging en innovatie. Met deze beveiliging wordt vooral gedoeld op de belastingdienst, aangezien dit al eens in opspraak geweest is:

Nu de Staat goed bij kas is, kan ze wat extra's doen. Ze verhoogt de ICT-uitgaven voor volgend jaar met 593 miljoen gulden. In 2002 krijgt deze extra injectie een omvang van 364 miljoen gulden.

Daarnaast is ruimte in het budget vrijgemaakt voor beveiliging van geautomatiseerde systemen. Vooral bij de Belastingdienst blijkt hier het een en ander aan te schorten. Het Openbaar Ministerie, de justitiële gerechten en de politie krijgen betere computerapparatuur.[break]Een ander belangrijk punt is de ICT in het onderwijs. Op veel scholen is op dit moment nog weinig digitaals te vinden en leraren die de aan- en uitknop van een PC niet zouden kunnen vinden tref je overal nog aan. Hier moet volgens het kabinet verandering in komen. Nieuwe computers zullen gekocht worden, het personeel wordt beter opgeleid en Kennisnet zal sneller ingevoerd worden:[/break]De regering wil de plannen voor toepassing van ICT in het onderwijs versneld uitvoeren. Er komt in 2001 50 miljoen gulden extra beschikbaar. In de notitie 'Hoofdpunten van het Regeringsbeleid' besteedt het kabinet veel aandacht aan de kennismaatschappij.

Het ministerie heeft dinsdag aangekondigd dat Kennisnet in versneld tempo wordt ingericht. Alle scholen moeten eind 2001 op het netwerk zijn aangesloten. Het departement reserveert hier 50 miljoen gulden extra voor. In de Voorjaarsnota was bovendien 100 miljoen gulden extra gereserveerd om de ict-vaardigheden van onderwijzend personeel te vergroten.

Ik kreeg van Michiel Gosens, PR manager van Microsoft Benelux, het onderstaande verhelderende mailtje over de situatie rond de vorige week ontdekte foute batch Windows Millennium CD's, waarmee het installeren van Windows Me over Win95 niet mogelijk is. Inmiddels is 90% van deze foute pakketten vervangen en hebben de mensen die vanwege de fout niet konden upgraden een goed exemplaar toegestuurd gekregen:

De pakketfout betreft een klein gedeelte van de Win ME lading. In een van de 'productieruns' is een verkeerde cd terechtgekomen in de dozen die waren bedoeld voor de Nederlandse markt. Voor de Nederlandse markt is een promoactie bedacht die upgrades van zowel Win 95, 98 als 98 SE mogelijk maakt. De rest van de wereld heeft alleen upgrade cd's voor Win 98 en Win 98 SE. Een klein gedeelte van deze cd's uit de betreffende productierun is in de Nederlandse dozen terechtgekomen.

Het gaat hier hooguit om enkele duizenden pakketten. Van deze populatie pakketten hebben alleen ontvangers die willen upgraden vanaf Windows 95 naar Windows ME installatieproblemen. Populatie van deze ontvangers die Windows 95 gebruiken is nog slechts 32%. Het gaat hier dus om een hele kleine groep. Ondertussen is 90% van deze pakketten vervangen voor een pakket met de juiste CD. Ook heeft Microsoft eenieder die door deze verwisselfout niet kon upgraden binnen 24 uur kosteloos een nieuwe juiste cd toegestuurd.

De suggestie dat upgraden vanaf Win95 onmogelijk is met Windows Me, is dus onjuist.

Onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Manchester verwachten dat het alom gevreesde RSI niet alleen veroorzaakt wordt door herhalende bewegingen, zoals het woord wel doet vermoeden (Repetitive Strain Injury). Ook de geestelijke conditie van de werknemer/patiënt kan bijdragen aan een pijnlijke arm. Let dus voortaan niet alleen op fysieke omstandigheden op kantoor, maar ook op de sfeer. Maak regelmatig een praatje met een collega's of vertel eens een mop:

De Universiteit van Manchester heeft twee jaar lang onderzoek gedaan naar RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury, ook wel muisarm) onder een groep van 1200 personen tussen de 18 en 65 jaar. De gangbare mening dat RSI wordt veroorzaakt door het verrichten van steeds dezelfde bewegingen door arm of pols klopt niet, stellen de wetenschappers.

Weliswaar ontstaan muisarmen voornamelijk bij mensen die veel repeterende bewegingen maken, zoals het werken met computers, maar dit is geen afdoende verklaring voor het verschijnsel. Zij hebben wel enig idee: psychologische factoren zijn van grote invloed. Genoemd hierbij worden stress en algehele onvrede met het werk, veroorzaakt door superieuren en collega's.

Heise Online schrijft dat het Belgische bedrijf Option International een springboard module voor de Handspring Visor in ontwikkeling heeft waarmee de Visor omgebouwd kan worden tot GSM. Het apparaatje laat zich op dezelfde manier gebruiken als een normaal mobieltje, het is dus de bedoeling dat je met een PDA tegen je oor rond gaat wandelen. Het gebruik van een los free speech microfoontje is echter ook mogelijk. Geïnteresseerden kunnen de VisorPhone vanaf eind deze maand bestellen voor een prijs vanaf 200 dollar. De levering voor de Amerikaanse markt begint eind dit jaar:

Eric schrijft dat-ie bij Fast Graphics een roundup heeft neergemikt van zeven GeForce2 GTS videokaartjes, gemixt met een GeForce2 MX en een ATi Radeon 64MB. Performance verschillen tussen de GF2 GTS kaarten zijn er (zoals bekend) niet echt, wij tweakers kiezen dan uiteraard voor de meest overklokbare. Volgens Eric is dat in dit geval de AOpen PA256 Deluxe die dankzij zijn Open Bios zich zeer aardig laat overklokken. Verder wordt ook de Asus V7700 Deluxe wederom aanbevolen:

When you buy a GeForce 2 GTS card you won't have to base your decision on performance: All cards perform almost identical. The things to look at are price and/or added value.

In the lowest price segment we find the Creative Annihilator 2, which sells at low prices but has no added value. A little more expensive, but with a hardware monitor to check the cards status, is the Asus V7700 Pure. Both cards are excellent choices when you don't care much about extra features.
A very remarkable card is the Aopen PA256 Deluxe. Due to it's Open Bios functionality this card will definitely be the choice for overclockers.
Abit has done very well too with a great 64 MB GeForce 2 GTS card which overclocks very well.

Guillemot has added some value to their cards by making them look very cool with blue PCB's. But more interesting is the TV output which is found on both of their GeForce 2 GTS card.

More added value is found with the fully loaded Asus V7700 Deluxe. This is a true multimedia card and definitely the best equipped graphics card we've ever seen. With video in- and out, a set of 3D Glasses and a big load of software this card is clearly the winner of the test when it comes to the overall package.

Trouble liet ons weten dat UPC de migratie van A2000 naar Chello in de regio Amsterdam bijna heeft voltooid. Bijkomend onplezierig gevolg is dat de up- en downstream snelheid van de voormalige A2000 abonnees met de helft wordt verlaagd:

Gisteren ontving ik en velen met mij een brief van UPC dat de migratie van A2000 naar Chello bijna is afgerond en dat daarmee ook een aantal instellingen zullen veranderen (een ieder zou hier nog een brief over ontvangen om deze wijzigingen aan te kunnen brengen), echter behoorlijk verdekt staat ook een klein regeltje dat je kabelmodem opnieuw zal worden ingesteld met de huidige Chello standaarden. Te weten 1500/128, wat betekent dat de upstream voor deze groep gebruikers GEHALVEERD wordt, iets wat mijn inziens tegen het contract is wat ik destijds met A2000 heb afgesloten.

Voor klachten en vragen (omgeving Amsterdam) kan er gebeld worden met 020-7700700, echter dit nummer is zwaar overbelast wist een mevrouw van het landelijk callcenter mij te vertellen.

iXBT Labs heeft een vervolg gepost op hun ATA66 en ATA100 controller roundup van begin deze maand. Dit keer werden de FastTrak 100 en HotRod 100 Pro ATA100 RAID controllers van Promise en Abit onder de loep genomen. Deze kaarten maken gebruik van de twee meest populaire IDE RAID controllers van dit moment, namelijk de Promise PDC20267 en HighPoint HPT370. Ter vergelijking nam iXBT ook de oudere Promise FastTrak66 in de test mee.

De Abit HotRod 100 Pro presteerde nogal wisselend in de benchmarks. De performance in de Business en High-End Disk Winmark test was in striping mode sneller dan die van de FastTrak 100, maar in de Disk Inspection en Threadmark test bleven de transfer rates ver achter bij de Promise kaart. De Promise FastTrak lijkt in ieder geval sneller te zijn in de mirroring mode:

Frankly speaking, we were a bit disappointed with the relatively low performance gain provided by Promise FastTrak100 controller compared to its predecessor (in case of 2 HDDs). However, on the other hand, we were very happy to find out that the price difference between these two controller cards makes only a few bucks. Moreover, we have to admit that FastTrak100 should be undoubtedly praised for the performance in mirror mode, which will ensure its application in file servers and workstations. As for the RAID array linear read problems, we really hope for the better here.

And at last ABIT HotRod 100 Pro. Unfortunately, it turned out absolutely unsuitable for systems aimed at multimedia streams processing having shown considerably low and unstable performance in the appropriate benchmarks. But things are not dramatic at all. Hot Rod 100 Pro appeared the best in all file benchmarks having left both rivals far behind. So, it also has its strong point.

The Register doet de voorspelling dat Intel komende maandag twee verse mobile PIII's en een nieuwe mobile Celeron introduceert. De nieuwe PIII's hebben een klok van 800 en 850MHz en een prijs van respectievelijk 425 en 575 dollar. Beide procs beschikken over de energiebesparende SpeedStep anti-turbo technologie. De nieuwe Celeron draait op 700MHz en kost circa 185 dollar. De release van de nieuwe processors gaat waarschijnlijk gepaard met een prijsverlaging van de huidige mobile line-up:

Remaining tight-lipped as ever over forthcoming products, Intel today refused to confirm or deny that three new mobile chips are to launch on Monday.

The 850 and 800MHz Pentium III SpeedStep mobiles (running at 700 and 650MHz respectively on batteries) will be joined by a 700MHz Celeron mobile, a 50MHz speed bump from the previous top Celeron. The fastest mobile PIII available at the moment clocks in at 750MHz.

Final Frontier meldde dat Club OC een review online heeft gezet van de Vantec Bay Freezer. Het betreft een 5.25" cooler die aan de achterkant 2 afzonderlijke uitschuifbare fans heeft die tussen 7"(18cm) en 9.75"(25cm) kunnen variëren.

Dit keer is de conclusie een stuk minder dan die van Hardware Unlimited, de temperaturen blijven namelijk steken op de waarden die ze al hadden vóór de test (CPU 26, Videokaart 34 en Systeem 24 graden):

Well, I was very disappointed in the performance. I have a Vantec HDD cooler that I use and I like it a lot. This product is just not going to cut it for the overclocker that wants the most for their money. At $24.99, the bang for your buck is not there. We recommend you buy a 120mm fan, from Overclockers Hideout and get more then twice the airflow. Oh, and the 120mm fan is only $12.49. You could buy two! If you have no room for the 120's, then look into a slot cooler. They fit into an empty PCI slot and put the air where you need it most. If that doesn't work for you either, then DON'T OVERCLOCK! Save your money and buy a case that let's you put fans where you need them.

Vantec really dropped the ball on this one. Our "fully assembled" product wasn't exactly FULLY ASSEMBLED. Both fans blades were popped off the fan motors so we had to repair the Bay Freezer before we could test it! It is possible that this could have happened during shipping but it looks more like a result of shoddy assembly work. The quality and performance this product was no where near what we expected from Vantec.

iXBT Labs meldt dat Gigabyte als laatste van de drie grootste mobofabrikanten een plankje met onboard ATA100 RAID heeft aangekondigd. Het eerste Gigabyte mobo met RAID controller is de GA-7ZXR, een op de GA-7ZX gebaseerd KT133 plankje. Afgezien van de onboard RAID zijn de specs van de GA-7ZXR gelijk aan de GA-7ZX, dat wil zeggen 5xPCI, 3xDIMM, 1xAMR en 1xISA.

Intel heeft tegenover The Register bevestigd dat de wereld op 30 oktober wordt gezegend met de officiële release van de Pentium 4. Eerder werd er gehoopt op een intro party halverwege oktober, maar die datum heeft men kennelijk niet kunnen / willen halen:

Intel today confirmed that October 30th would be the big day for Intel's new baby. Pricing and clock speeds remain the only details yet to be revealed, our estimates being around $990 for the 1.5GHz part and $840 for the lesser 1.4GHz. Pentium III prices should also drop at the same time, with current top banana, the 1GHz, dipping below $500 for the first time.

Via The Reg kwam ik bij deze ultra wazige Geocities site met benchmarks van een 1,2GHz Pentium 4 Engineering Sample. Het systeem bestond uit een Intel Tehama plankje met 4 Kingston PC800 RIMMetjes, een eigenhandig gehackte Quadro II (oorspronkelijk een Gainward GeForce2 GTS) en een Rioworks dual channel Ultra160 SCSI kaart met Quantum Atlas 10K II harddisk. De benchmarks werden gedraaid onder Windows 98 op 1024*768 in 16-bit kleur en met de Detonator 6.18 drivers:

Een score van 37,2 in Content Creation Winstone 2000 komt overeen met een 1GHz PIII in deze benchmarks van Anand (gedraaid onder Win2k met IBM ATA66 harddisk en GeForce2 GTS).

Johan de Gelas van Ace's Hardware meldt dat hij uit betrouwbare bron heeft vernomen dat er in de loop van volgend jaar een snellere versie van de 760MP chipset wordt gereleased, die de bussnelheid verhoogd van 266 naar 333MHz. De UP2000 moederplank van Alpha Processor Inc. maakt al gebruik van een 2x166MHz bus. Dit lijkt dus allemaal erg waarschijnlijk, ook al omdat AMD's vriendje Micron eerder dit jaar de PC2600 DDR SDRAM specs heeft voorgelegd aan de JEDEC. Zoals je weet heeft de 760 chipset een synchrone geheugenbus, waardoor 333MHz PC2600 DDR geheugen is vereist op een 333MHz FSB:

An industry source told us that is very likely that AMD will introduce a faster version of the AMD760MP in the course of the year 2001. This faster version will be clocked at 333 MHz (166 MHz DDR) instead of 266 MHz. This seems to make sense, as Micron and AMD have been working closely together, and Micron officials told us a month ago that the PC2600 DDR SDRAM specs are being discussed in the JEDEC (Engineering Council). PC2600 DDR SDRAM offer the same bandwidth (2.6 GB/s) as a 333 MHz EV6-bus (333 MHz x 8 byte). Who knows, this faster AMD760MP chipset might be the chipset for "Sledgehammer", alias K8.

The Register schrijft dat de sales & marketing vice president van AMD in Azië heeft bevestigd dat de zakelijke en enterprise markt een belangrijke prioriteit heeft in AMD's huidige aanvalsplan (hoe verassend...). Interessanter nieuws is dat we de eerste quad Athlon systemen al in begin 2001 op de markt mogen verwachten. De 4-way mobo's maken gebruik van twee 760MP chipsets die via een 6,4GB/s snelle LDT bus aan elkaar worden geknoopt. Support voor next-generation I/O standaarden zoals PCI-X en Infiniband behoort tot de mogelijkheden (thanks dEjAvU voor de tip):

He also talked at some length about AMD's LDT (lightning data transport) technology, and showed slides which offered the possibility of four way and eight way Athlons working in one system, while also supporting Infiniband, PCI-X, PCI 64/66 and the South Bridge.

LDT will support 6.4Gbps per link, which he said was a 20 times increase on current bandwidth. "It complements PCI and SIO and is not a competitor," he said.

Machines, which are likely to be four way Athlons, will use LDT to provide a high end AMD infrastructure by early next year, he said.

Lee also briefly talked about AMD's X86-64 technology. He said it would have a minimal effect on motherboard designs, and also reduced the complexity posed to IT staff if they attempt to make 32 and 64 bit systems to work together.

In de low-end werkt AMD met een aantal vriendjes aan de ontwikkeling van het ACR (Advanced Communication Riser) platform. ACR is backwards compatible met AMR en is volgens AMD beter dan Intel's concurrende CNR technologie ('who cares anyway' hoor ik de die-hard performance tweaker vol afschuw roepen ).

De mannan van Sharky Extreme hebben een mooie Intel CPU en Chipset roadmap in elkaar geknutseld. In het artikel komen alle belangrijke producten langs die we van Intel mogen verwachten de komende tijd zoals de Pentium 4, de 0.13 micron Pentium 3, de 100MHz Celeron II, de Timna en een aantal chipsets. Een goed stukje leesvoer dus als je niet precies op de hoogte bent van Intel's plannen. Hieronder een stukje over de voor- en nadelen van een 0.13 micron productieproces:

Intel will be moving their high-end processors to a .13 micron process. As usual, using a smaller process provides many advantages. First, it saves money by allowing more processors to be built with one silicon wafer. Second, it saves power and reduces heat by decreasing the power needed per gate per clock. And third, it allows higher clock speeds because smaller gates can switch faster.

The disadvantage of a smaller process is that it increased the heat density of the processor. When more gates are squeezed into less space and the clock speed is turned up, a tremendous amount of heat is produced across a tiny surface area. Because of the increased heat density of .13 micron, Intel will be doing two things.

First, they will integrate a heat spreader into the processor package. This heat spreader will provide a wider contact patch for whatever heat sink is used. This lessens the danger of CPU failure due to an improperly installed or designed heat sink.

Second, they are calling for more advanced heat sink designs. At IDF, Intel was showing a copper-based heat sink with aluminum fins, weighing in at a hefty 450g. This massive heat sink is the reason for the redesigned case for the Pentium 4 mentioned above. As clock speeds increase, transistor count rises, and die sizes shrink, you can expect more exotic cooling methods in the future.

Tech Extreme heeft een review geschreven over de Microsoft SideWinder Strategic Commander, een muis speciaal ontworpen voor strategie games. De muis heeft een hele lading aan knopjes waarvan zeven door de gebruiker geprogrammeerd kunnen worden, zelfs tijdens een spel. De reviewer was erg tevreden over de Strategic Commander, en kon als enig nadeel alleen maar de prijs van 60 dollar noemen:

When you take your first look at the Strategic Commander, you will immediately think it was ripped off from the set of a high-tech sci-fi action movie. In fact, the Strategic Commander closely resembles a throttle straight out of the Air Force’s high-tech fighter craft. The unit itself is not that heavy, but thanks to its four rubber feet and wide base, it won’t slide around at all during heavy use.

The unit is molded in Microsoft’s now standard black and dark gray color scheme, the same color scheme that has been used on all other SideWinder controllers and devices. It also has a very stylish and extremely comfortable contour that will help minimize hand fatigue during actual use. One caveat of the unit is the fact that it has been designed for use of the left hand exclusively, so left handed players will have a really tough time getting used to handling this little beast.

[...] There’s really nothing more that I can say about the Strategic Commander. It delivers completely on what it promises, the software is intuitive, powerful, and easy to use, and the unit is an absolute joy to use. About the only sour point I can come up with is its rather steep $60 price tag. Still, that price shouldn’t stop strategy gaming fans from gobbling them up in droves. Once you try one out on your favorite strategy game, you won’t want to go back to your old mouse\keyboard setup. It’s really strange that it took this long for a company to come up with a dedicated control unit for strategy gaming, and with the Microsoft SideWinder Strategic Commander, you won’t have or want to look for anything else.

Gotapex heeft een tweetal reepjes Mushkin PC-150 HSDRAM op de testbank gegooid. Deze reepjes zijn CAS2 op 150 mhz . De Muskin DIMM's worden vergeleken met een 7,5 NS Corsair 133mhz DIMM, terwijl ze zelf als 6,6 NS geklasseerd zijn. Deze vergelijking winnen de Mushkin reepjes dan ook gemakkelijk op 133Mhz(2:2:2) en op 153Mhz(2:3:2) wordt de Corsair module niet eens meer getest. Hier de conclusie van Gotapex.

Is Mushkin Enhanced PC-150 HSDRAM a needed component for everyone? No, the real lure of PC-150 lies in the hearts of the overclocking enthusiast. In fact, if you are a not interested in overclocking, I suggest that you pick up a stick of PC-133 HSDRAM, as it runs stable on 133MHz FSB at 2:2:2. For those of you who are even moderately interested in overclocking those new cores, it is ridiculous to consider anything but PC-150 HSDRAM and an 815E driven mainboard. The i815E/PC-150 HSDRAM combo is a winner. Another perk of purchasing PC-150 is that for the enthusiast, overclocking those EB Intel processors running on the 133MHz FSB, is now even more possible. The only downside to investing in HSDRAM hold true for purchasing any SDRAM, and that is that DDR SDRAM is only a couple of months away and appears to offer a significant performance hike. All that aside if you decide not to wait, Mushkin Enhanced PC-150 HSDRAM is the way to go. How sure are we? Well, throughout all of our testing, the PC-150 HSDRAM proved its worth. So if you've got the cash, and are looking to upgrade, then go pick up a stick of Mushkin Enhanced PC-150 HSDRAM.
