De SIDN heeft, na de domeinnamen van Namespace op slot te zetten, nu besloten om ze ook weer in de verkoop te doen.

De datum van vrijkomen moet nog bepaald worden omdat er nog rechtzaken lopen en er nog technische voorzieningen getroffen moeten worden om een run op de domeinnamen te voorkomen. De directeur van de SIDN, Boswinkel, verwacht dat de domeinen vóór het eind van dit jaar vrij zullen komen.

In een persbericht wijst de SIDN er nog eens nadrukkelijk op dat de rechter heeft uitgemaakt dat het registreren van een domeinnaam die overeenkomt met een merk- of handelsnaam van een ander vrijwel altijd onrechtmatig is.

Thermo schrijft naar aanleiding van de eerdere nieuwspost van vandaag dat MP3.com van de rechter een schadevergoeding van $25.000 per CD aan Universal Music moet betalen, wat ongeveer uitkomt op $118 miljoen. Hoewel de rechter (Rakoff) niet bij het gevraagde bedrag van $450 miljoen komt, is dit zeer waarschijnlijk een flinke strop voor MP3.com, en ik vraag me af hoe lang ze zo nog door kunnen gaan.

Rakoff said he could have given an award of as much as $150,000 per CD but chose a number considerably lower because Universal had not alleged damages and MP3.com had acted more responsibly than other Internet startups.

De Amerikaanse provider America OnLine (AOL) heeft zomaar een domeinnaam van een 16 jarige jongen gestolen, zo meldt Observers. AOLBeta.com is laatst op mysterieuze wijze van eigenaar gewisseld. Precies één dag nadat de tiener het domein legaal geregistreerd had, bleek het ineens in handen te zijn van AOL. De jongen is van plan een rechtzaak aan te spannen tegen America OnLine:

The latest owner of AOLBeta.com has lost the domain to America Online, adding to a list of problems with this domain. 16 year old Nickolas Grove registered the domain AOLBeta.com on August 20 after seeing the domain was free to purchase.

Nickolas started noticing trouble on August 30 when he had trouble uploading his completed webpage, which took him over a week to construct. After contacting his web hosting provider, it was determined that the DNS (Domain Name Server) settings were incorrect. America Online had simply transferred the domain to their ICANN Registrar, therefore pulling any control that Nickolas had of the domain, regardless of the fact that the domain was not paid for by AOL.[break]Dit was trouwens niet de eerste keer dat AOL op deze manier in de publiciteit stond. Nickolas remarks, "AOL’s lack of willingness to help and sheer fact that they stole a domain name that I rightfully owned shows exactly what happens when companies become as large as AOL is. AOL’s merger with Time Warner can only make this occurrence more the normal. Taking AOL’s advice I am looking to settle this with “an attorney.”

Bij PCRivals.com zijn ze flink door het lint gegaan wat betreft het overclocken van een CPU. Ze hebben daar een vriezer genomen en die flink mishandeld met allerhande gereedschap om hem zo om te bouwen tot PC kast. Daarnaast hebben ze een soort van alcohol koeling gebouwd om zo de CPU lekker koud te houden. Blijkbaar is dit ook nog gelukt, de koelvloeistof kreeg de fijne temperatuur van -17,9 graden. Jammer genoeg hebben ze niet vermeld hoeveel verder de CPU kon worden getweaked met behulp van deze koeling.

Nu gaat iedereen (inclusief mijzelf) natuurlijk schreeuwen: "hoe zit het dan met de condens?". Nou daar hadden ze heel geruststellend *kuch* het volgende over te zeggen:

Planet Hardware heeft de kersverse AMD Duron op 750MHz eens vergelijken met de Pentium III 700E die zo ongeveer hetzelfde kosten in de US (in NL niet helemaal, Duron is dik 100 piek goedkoper). Voor gamers blijkt de AMD proc het meest interessant en ook de meeste WinBench resulaten waren in het voordeel van de Duron:

The lion put up a great fight, but the new world belongs to the Duron, which won 4 out of 7 benchmarks outright. While 4 out of 7 isn't a knockout, it should be remembered that the benchmarks in which the Duron won utilized higher resolutions and color depth, i.e. the type that gamers play most of.

It's well documented now that the Pentium III will not be killed off by the upcoming Pentium4, but instead will be resurrected with a new architecture that uses a 200MHz system bus, 512KB of L2 cache, and a .13mu manufacturing process. Whether these advancements will be enough to stave off the threat of improved future Athlon and Duron cores is unknown. What is known though is that AMD continues to roll faster and faster chips off the assembly line, and the days of AMD being a laughing stock are long in the past.

The P3-700 is a good processor. When paired with a good i815e mainboard and PC133 SDRAM it's a strong performer. The Duron 750 is slightly faster though, and equaled the P3 in terms of stability throughout all of the testing period. It's a great chip, and would make a great upgrade for any user still relegated to sub-400MHz processor speeds.

Storage Review komt ons vandaag verblijden met een review van de Maxtor DiamondMax 80. Deze hardeschijf draait rustig 5400 rondjes per minuut en heeft een 80 Gigabyte aan ruimte wachtend om volgezet te worden. Ondanks het lage toerental is de performance van de schijf niet echt slecht. Volgens Storage Review is dit de enige schijf die en goedkoop is en veel ruimte bied, dus als je altijd te weinig ruimte hebt weet je waar je meer kan vinden :

Though our tests were conducted with silent operation disabled, the DiamondMax 80 was nonetheless fairly quiet. Seeks are muted, noticeable only in seek intensive tests such as ZD's Disk Access test. We recommend that the drive be run with quiet mode disabled outside of noise-sensitive applications. Though it is one of the few drives that maintains four platters, the DM80 nevertheless runs only warm to the touch even after hours of thrashing. It's easily incorporated into any system.

Overall, the DiamondMax 80 provides acceptable though not overwhelming performance. Its main claim-to-fame is its staggering capacity. If you want 80 gigs in a low profile drive, it's your only choice. The 75 GB IBM Deskstar 75GXP will deliver similar capacity, but it's much more expensive in comparison… one pays dearly for the 7200 RPM operation. As a result, the DM80 is currently one's premiere (and only) choice for huge, inexpensive, mass storage.

Paul Thurrott heeft een leuk verhaaltje geschreven over de laatste externe build (2257) van Windows Whistler. Hierin wat algemene praat over het besturingssysteem van Microsoft, maar ook worden er een aantal nieuwe features ten opzichte van de vorige build vermeld. Zo is in de Personal Edition het Start Menu nu standaard vervangen door het Start Panel en is het Professional Theme aangepast. Vreemd genoeg verdwijnen bij gebruik van het Panel een aantal icoontjes van de desktop:

By default, Whistler Personal Edition now features the Start Panel replacement for the Start menu that was hidden in the previous build (2250). The Start Panel, along with a new-look Professional Theme, provides most of the obvious visual change in this build, and I suspect that most people will be happy with these defaults. Deze schijf heeft als eerste complete ondersteuning voor Fibre Channel, en om deze reden moet de MegaRam-5000 dubbel zo snel zijn als een willekeurige andere solid state hardeschijf. De capaciteit van een MegaRam-5000 ‘ding’ ligt tussen de 1 en 25GB. Universal Music eist een schadevergoeding van $450 miljoen dollar tegen MP3.com vanwege de CD's die illegaal van MyMP3.com zijn neergehaald. Vergeleken met de andere platenmaatschappijen als Sony en Warner die zo'n $20 miljoen kregen is dit bedrag absurd hoog en zou waarschijnlijk het einde voor MP3.com betekenen. Universal's lawyers want $45,000 for each of the 10,000 CDs it reckons MP3.com illegally copied for the MyMP3.com 'virtual CD library' service.

In total, Universal's request is way above the $20 million MP3.com is believed to have paid out to each of the other four major music labels - Sony, EMI, BMG and Warner - that sued it earlier this year. MP3.com settled with those plaintiffs out of court - in Sony's case mere weeks before the damages hearing was due to begin.

In response to the Universal request, MP3.com's lawyer, Michael Rhodes, told the court that such a sum "could never be satisfied and would end up being the largest paper award in history". His implication is that MP3.com would be put out of business by such a sum. Earlier in the hearing, Rhodes claimed that that was Universal's goal and the motivation behind its refusal to settle out of court.

Universal said it wants the presiding judge, US District Court Judge Jed Rakoff, to impose damages on such as scale both as a punishment for MP3.com and as a deterrent to other would-be copyright violators.

Ik lees bij WebWereld dat Microsoft plannen heeft om Windows Whistler ook op digitale televisies te laten draaien. Door deze actie komt de toekomst van set-topboxen voor tv's in gevaar, alhoewel het nog maar de vraag is of die echt compleet vervangen kunnen worden. Lees het artikel voor meer info:

Microsoft wil haar besturingssoftware voor digitale televisie en computers samen laten gaan. Ook televisies moeten straks draaien op Whistler, de volgende versie van Windows.

Volgens Microsoft is het een logische stap. "Set top-boxen groeien toch al meer naar de pc toe", zo zegt Ed Graczyk, bij het concern verantwoordelijk voor de Microsoft TV-software, tegen The Wall Street Journal. Deze week zal Microsoft tijdens de International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam een demonstratie geven van Whistler.

Met het samenvoegen van de tv- en de pc-besturingssoftware lijkt Microsoft set-top boxen, de kastjes waarmee interactieve digitale tv mogelijk wordt, alweer overbodig te willen maken. Vanuit het oogpunt van het concern zou dat een begrijpelijke wens zijn, want het bedrijf zit behoorlijk met de software voor de kastjes in haar maag.

Thresh's FiringSquad heeft in dit artikel de i815 moedeborden van Abit, Asus en MSI eens met elkaar vergeleken. De CUSL2 van Asus kwam dankzij zijn goede features en performance als beste uit de test, op de voet gevolgd door de MSI 815 Pro die wat minder scoorde op tweakbaarheid. Abit's SE6 kwam helaas wat minder solide over maar profiteert wel van het uiterst tweakbare SoftMenu III. Hieronder meer uit de conclusie:

Based on the complete package offered by the CUSL2, we clearly feel it offers the best combination of price, features, and performance. The MSI 815E Pro finishes a close second with its equally impressive performance and feature-list, but just doesn't offer the same level of tweaking present on the CUSL2.

With it's combination of diagnostic LEDs, Fuzzy Logic II for overclocking, and EZ-BIOS for updating your system BIOS, the 815E Pro would be a good motherboard for those of you who haven't dabbled with overclocking or installing a new motherboard.

While we certainly weren't disappointed with the overall performance of the SE6 motherboard, in comparison to the other motherboards present here the SE6 just isn't as strong. The main strength of previous ABIT motherboards lied in their tweaking ability. In 1999 ABIT's SoftMenu III interface was the first of its kind to offer 1MHz increments for the system bus. While ASUS and MSI's offerings support this feature, the pioneer of this implementation is remarkably absent.

This, along with the aforementioned additional features offered on the 815E Pro relegate the SE6 to third place.

Volgens het Russische Kaspersky Lab is er een nieuw soort virussen op komst. Onder de naam "Stream Companion" maken de boosaardige stukjes programmacode gebruik van het NTFS bestandssysteem van Windows 2000 en NT. Dit systeem ondersteunt dat meerdere streams tegelijk uitgevoerd worden, voor bijvoorbeeld encryptie. Het virus gaat nu in één van de onderliggende stromen zitten, waardoor virusscanners het niet kunnen onderscheppen, want momenteel wordt alleen de bovenste stroom op virussen gechecked. Antivirus-software zal dus moeten worden aangepast. Het eerste Stream-virus is overigens al gefabriceerd:

Kaspersky Lab, an international anti-virus software development company, announces the discovery of W2K.Stream virus, which represents a new generation of malicious programs for Windows 2000. This virus uses a new breakthrough technology based on the "Stream Companion" method for self-embedding into the NTFS file system.

"Certainly, this virus begins a new era in computer virus creation," said Eugene Kaspersky, Head of Anti-Virus Research at Kaspersky Lab. "The ’Stream Companion’ technology the virus uses to plant itself into files makes its detection and disinfection extremely difficult to complete.”

Unlike previously known methods of file infection (adding the virus body at beginning, ending or any other part of a host file), the "Stream" virus exploits the NTFS file system (Windows NT/2000) feature, which allows multiple data streams. For instance, in Windows 95/98 (FAT) files, there is only one data stream – the program code itself. Windows NT/2000 (NTFS) enables users to create any number of data streams within the file: independent executable program modules, as well as various service streams (file access rights, encryption data, processing time etc.). This makes NTFS files very flexible, allowing for the creation of user-defined data streams aimed at completing specific tasks. [break]

ABN Amro geeft toe dat het bedrijf verantwoordelijk is voor het beveiligingslek van HomeNet en stelt zichzelf aansprakelijk voor eventuele schade, zo meldt Nu.nl. De bank komt nu toch al volgende week met een oplossing, een stuk sneller dus dan de eerder gemelde "enkele weken". Het lijkt erop dat het geen patch zal betreffen die de gegevens zal encrypten, maar een firewall-achtig programma om de trojan tegen te gaan:

ABN Amro heeft toegegeven verantwoordelijk te zijn voor het lek in het telebankierprogramma HomeNet. Daarmee heeft de bank tevens erkend aansprakelijk te zijn voor de eventuele gevolgen voor de klant.

Volgende week komt ABN Amro voor de HomeNet-gebruiker met een noodoplossing. Ze stelt dan software ter beschikking waarmee de klant kan zien of 'hackers' zijn persoonlijke computer zijn binnengedrongen en daar met diens gegevens zoals bankrekeningnummer hebben geknoeid. Over zes weken komt de bank met een structurele aanpak.

Bij Tom's Hardware Guide zijn ze al weer bij deel 4 van het 150 MHz busspeed project gekomen. Maarliefst 18 moederborden met de i815 chipset worden met elkaar vergeleken. De grote winnaars zijn de Asus CUSL2 en de Gigabyte GA-6OXM7E. Grote verliezer is de Abit SE6, zowel op het gebied van snelheid als op het gebied van overklokken presteert dit moederbord zeer matig. De mobo's haalden allemaal de 150 MHz. De Abit SE6 bleef steken op 153 MHz, de Asus CUSL2 haalde een respectabele 185 MHz! Hier een hap uit de conclusie:

Most candidates offer alternative system speeds. 150 MHz were tolerated by each motherboard in this review. Some even offer 166 MHz or more (AOpen, Asus, DFI, IWill, Jetway, MSI, QDI). Only ABit, AOpen, Asus, MSI and Epox include the option to raise the CPU voltage. According to our experience it's often necessary to increase the processor voltage in order to get a stable system. For example if you run a Pentium III 733 at 160 MHz system speed, the CPU will have to cope with 880 MHz. Most of today's Pentium III CPUs will likely fail at the default voltage of 1.65 V, but will work stable as soon as they get 1.7 or 1.75 V.

Asus has far the best overclocking motherboard right now, as I could get the board running even at 185 MHz FSB! Please note that the memory will only run at 3/4 of the system speed if you exceed 166 MHz. The BIOS setup menu makes it very easy to select system and memory speed as well as the core voltage.

ABit offers similar features, but the clock generator seems to be limited to 153 MHz. I've no other obvious explanation for this.

The biggest source for problems seems to be the main memory. Most PC133 memory modules are only specified for CAS Latency 3, reducing the overall performance by approx. 3%. CAS 2 memory is more expensive and more difficult to obtain. Running CAS 3 memory at CAS 2 does sometimes work, but usually you will only experience hang-ups or crashes. One common symptom we see is a SYSmark run that stops.

All candidates left quite a good impression. Two years ago, I did a comprehensive BX motherboard review. I underlined the fact that the performance differences between the motherboards are too little to base a buying decision on them. The same is valid now as well. Most motherboards perform pretty even. Check out the features you really want. Solano boards belong to the most expensive types available right now. I would only spend the higher price for an Asus or Gigabyte motherboard if there is a feature that I really want.

Security.nl meldt dat de site van de Consumentenbond volgens bronnen gisterenavond is gehackt. Na de melding van de kraak werd de site enige tijd ontsierd met een storingsmelding en was op Ombudsman.nl de volgende tekst te lezen: "Klacht: Consumentbond zeikt iedereen af en doet er zelf niets aan, kunt u daar niets aan doen". De ongefundeerde en ongenuanceerde uitspraken van de Consumentenbond over de recentelijke 'hack' van ABN Amro lijken de reden van de hack te zijn:

Het vermoeden bestaat dat beide daden gevoed zijn door de niet door enige kennis gehinderde uitspraken van de consumentenbond met betrekking tot de afgelopen zondag op tv getoonde 'kraak' van het ABN Amro Homenet banksysteem. Er is veel kritiek op het Webtrader keurmerk van de consumentenbond geweest. Dit keurmerk zou consumenten een houvast moeten geven bij de beslissing of een webwinkel te vertrouwen is maar in de praktijk blijkt het nauwelijks waarde te hebben doordat de sites die het keurmerk voeren onvoldoende worden gecontroleerd. Consumenten krijgen hierdoor een vals gevoel van veiligheid.

The HP DeskJet 990Cse/Cxi and PhotoSmart 1218/xi printers deliver HP's fastest DeskJet and PhotoSmart printer speeds ever, with up to 17 pages per minute (ppm) black and 13 ppm color. The HP PhotoSmart 1215 printer prints up to 15 ppm black, 12 ppm color.

"HP inkjet printers provide not only great print quality in best mode, but great print quality in normal and draft modes as well," said Vyomesh Joshi, vice president and general manager of HP's Inkjet Systems. "Customers shouldn't have to compromise print quality for speed. Our high print quality at faster print speeds is one of our key competitive advantages."

All three printers feature a new optical paper-sensing technology exclusive to HP. An optical sensor detects the type of paper in the printer's paper tray and adjusts the print settings automatically to deliver optimal print quality. Customers retain the ability to control the print settings by turning off the optical paper sensing feature and manually selecting paper type and print mode. The feature will detect most manufacturers' plain papers, photo-glossy papers, specialty coated papers and transparency media.

Infrared, a wireless technology that transfers information via light (like a television remote control), enables customers to beam information and print from compatible digital cameras, palmtop and laptop computers, and other mobile devices, eliminating the need to first download the information into a computer. HP's expansion of wireless printing options anticipates the growing need for wireless printing from mobile devices. Ken Dulaney, an analyst for GartnerGroup Companies, recently stated, "By 2003, there will be 30 million personal digital appliances in use worldwide."

Automatic two-sided printing are standard on the HP DeskJet 990Cse/Cxi printer and the HP PhotoSmart 1218/xi printer and optional on the HP PhotoSmart 1215 printer, delivers professional results and helps control costs by reducing paper use. Other smart features include the following:

• print-cancel button;
• low-ink warning;
• 4x6 photo paper tray on the HP PhotoSmart printer eliminates having to change papers to print photos;
• high-capacity (150-sheet) paper tray on the HP DeskJet 990Cse/Cxi; and
• automatic print-cartridge alignment.

All three printers have parallel and USB ports, and are PC and USB-connect Mac-compatible.

The HP DeskJet 990Cse/Cxi printer is expected to ship later this month to retailers worldwide. The HP PhotoSmart 1218/xi and 1215 printers are expected to ship to retailers in October. Micron Technology heeft gisteren aangekondigd dat het is begonnen met de levering van supersnelle Quad Data Rate SRAM samples met een capaciteit van 9Mbit en een datarate van 333MHz. Deze snelheid wordt bereikt door het principe van dual ported VRAM te combineren met DDR. Micron Technology Inc. today announced sample availability of Quad Data Rate (QDR) SRAM, an 8 Mbit device organized as 512K x 18 with the capability to deliver data as fast as 333 MHz. The QDR SRAM is a new architecture for future high-performance communications applications, specifically targeting next generation switches and routers operating at data rates above 200 MHz.

In an effort to create true multiple sources quickly in the marketplace, Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY), IDT, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDTI) and Micron Technology, Inc. (NYSE: MU) cooperated in the development of the QDR architecture. The co-development effort extends beyond simple data sheet compliance to exchanging design simulations, test vectors, test methodologies, characterization plans and common packaging support. In order to assure customers of multiple, compatible sources, the three companies defined initial roadmaps and migration paths spanning to the 128-Mbit density.

The companies also standardized on the space-saving 13-mm x 15-mm fBGA package. Each vendor designs and manufactures the devices in its own technology and fabrication facilities. If you are looking for an all in one solution, this is probably the best drive for you! AOpen has again produced a superior product which more than lives up to its quoted specifications! I would highly recommend this drive to anyone! I will grant you it is not the fastest kid on the block, but writing at 6X is not too bad if you consider all the other technology packed into the drive! As I don't know the price for this unit, you could possibly get a DVD-ROM/CD-RW 2 drive combo, but I am willing to bet that AOpen has priced their unit at a very competitive price and you will be hard pressed to find a better deal in the price category.

The software package is a very nice collection of useful applications, especially easy for the novice user to jump right in and start things going. The only part I don't like again is the MP3/Media Player package which serves its purpose for the novice, yet will allow more power users to download and use the software they prefer such as Winamp. DVD and CD playback at quoted spec, plus 6X CD-RO and 4X CD-RW in one package, what more could a techie ask for?

The Register schrijft dat IBM eind dit jaar een nieuwe ThinkPad met Crusoe TM5400 processor op de markt zal zetten. Het bestaan van deze plannen is uitgelekt via de Taiwanese laptop fabrikant Quanta Computer, die onder andere voor IBM en Gateway produceert. Het Crusoe TM5400 mobieltje beschikt over 128KB L1 cache en 256KB on-die L2 cache. De kloksnelheid varieert van 500 tot 700MHz:

According to a Bloomberg report earlier today Quanta will be shipping smallish quantities of Transmeta 240s, probably using the Crusoe TM5400, to IBM before the end of the year.

The 240 is of course the dinky one, and low-cost, low-power Transmeta CPUs are just the sort of thing that ought to make volumes take off very nicely. So maybe IBM is planning a low-volume suck-it-and-see for 2000, but is anticipating a steep ramp to go with the processor ramp (they're being fabbed by IBM, so IBM should know) through 2001.

Motorola hoopt de problemen op te lossen met de nieuwe G4e core, die voorzien is van een langere pipeline en daardoor beter geschikt is voor hogere kloksnelheden. Om het verlies van IPC te compenseren worden extra pipelines toegevoegd en wordt de Altivec unit verder verbeterd. MasOS Rumors speculeert dat de G4e mogelijk gebruik gaat worden in een nieuwe serie Powerbooks, die in de komende drie maanden aangekondigd kan worden:

Webwereld meldt dat de Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland een onderzoek tegen Freehosting heeft ingesteld. De reden is volgens de SIDN het bijzonder hoge aantal klachten dat zij binnen krijgen over deze webhoster. De klachten schijnen zich vooral te concentreren rondom de domeinregistratie. Zo zijn er vermoedens dat Freehosting een domein voor zichzelf vastlegt als bezoekers op de Freehosting site een whois lookup doen naar een nog ongeregistreerde domein. Volgens Freehosting zijn de klachten het logisch gevolg van de grootte van het bedrijf. Met ruim 30.000 .nl-domeinen is Freehosting de op één na grootste hoster van het land:

Nadat het nieuws bezonken is zegt Kooman [directeur Freehosting] dat het eigenlijk logisch is dat er meer klachten over zijn bedrijf komen dan over concurrenten. "Wij groeien veel sneller. Daar heeft het aantal klachten ook mee te maken."

Volgens Kooman zijn de geluiden over domeinkaping onjuist. "Wij kunnen niet eens zien welke domeinnamen worden gecontroleerd. De gebruiker tikt die informatie direct in bij de Stichting Domeinregistratie." De extra service waarbij Freehosting alvast de naam registreert als de klant traag is met het papierwerk wordt door Kooman bevestigd. "Maar als de klant de naam wil, schrijven we die kosteloos over."
