Zoals bekend is dit gewoon een GeForce2 met een opgevoerde core met snel geheugen, en een flink prijskaartje. Kyle, niet echt bekend als nVidia fanaat, is erg positief over de kaart: iets wat ook wel mag als ie op 1600x1200 60 frames per seconde op de beeldbuis zet :

Let's put price aside for the time being. There is no doubt in my mind that the GeForce2 Ultra delivers the best combination of speed and image quality found in any Vid Card costing less than $1000. That may change in a month or two, but if you want the best today, you want the Ultra. Remember this is coming from a hardened 3dfx user, but the truth is the truth. 3dfx has their work cut out for themselves, that is for sure.

Computerworld schrijft dat Amazon.com momenteel als proef de prijzen van DVD's steeds wisselt. Willekeurig, maar ook een beetje beïnvloed door een aantal factoren, wordt door het systeem een prijs betaald. Zo moet je de ene keer $22 voor een DVD betalen, en de andere keer $27 voor precies hetzelfde product. Hoe lang deze vreemde gang van zaken nog door zal gaan wil een woordvoerster van Amazon niet zeggen:

Hitachi heeft bekend gemaakt dat zij computers met de Transmeta Crusoe processor gaan fabriceren. In november al kunnen we notebooks van Hitachi verwachten met de Crusoe ingebouwd. Hitachi sluit hiermee aan in het rijtje van IBM, Sony, Quanta, Toshiba, Fujitsu and NEC. In juli was er al een prototype van de Crusoe-powered Hitachi notebook op de PC Expo te zien, maar toen was nog niet zeker of de apparaten ook echt op de markt zouden komen. Ook gaat Hitachi 'Internet appliances' (webpads) maken:

Overigens zijn Dell en Compaq - de laatste heeft ook nog eens veel geld in Transmeta geïnvesteerd - nog steeds niet overtuigd van de mogelijkheden vna de Crusoe.

Hoewel de domeinnamen van Name Space al zijn afgepakt, zal er toch een hoge rekening naar het bedrijf verstuurd worden. Een rechter heeft vandaag bepaald dat Name Space de registratiekosten nog aan de SIDN moet voldoen, zo meldt Nu.nl:

Name Space moet bijna 1 miljoen gulden betalen aan de Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland (SIDN). Dat heeft de rechtbank in Amsterdam donderdag bepaald.

Name Space registreerde in het tweede kwartaal van dit jaar circa 27.000 internetdomeinnamen, maar betaalde niet op tijd. De SIDN, de enige instantie voor de registratie van domeinnamen eindigend op '.nl', nam de namen terug maar eiste wel geld voor de registratiekosten.

De rechter oordeelde dat de SIDN gelijk heeft en besloot dat de Stichting Informatica & Bedrijfsbeheer (SIB), nauw gelieerd aan Name Space, de rekening moet voldoen.

Microsoft wil in Nederland het illegale gebruik van software door het midden- en kleinbedrijf gaan terugdringen, door een campagne met radiospotjes te starten. Hierin zal de ondernemers verteld worden dat ze verkeerd bezig zijn en binnen dertig dagen zonder boete of straf toch nog een licentie kunnen aanvragen. Of dit zal helpen, ik weet het niet. Degenen die illegale software hebben weten toch echt wel dat ze niet officieel bezig zijn, en zullen zich waarschijnlijk weinig aantrekken van de spotjes:

Microsoft begint in Nederland een nieuwe campagne tegen illegaal gebruik van zijn software. De actie richt zich speciaal op het midden- en kleinbedrijf. In die sector is het illegaal gebruik fors, aldus Microsoft.

Het concern schat dat hier zo'n 70 procent van alle gebruikte software illegaal is. Dat levert het softwareconcern een schade op van 'enkele miljoenen' per jaar. Het gaat vooral om bedrijven met meer dan vijf pc's en minder dan vijftig pc's, licht een woordvoerder van Microsoft toe.

Bedrijven die illegaal software gebruiken, krijgen de kans om binnen dertig dagen en zonder bijkomende kosten of boetes alsnog aan hun licentieverplichtingen te voldoen. Bij weigering volgen nadere stappen, waarbij Microsoft in het uiterste geval justitie inschakelt.

De verkoop van drugs via internet begint grotere vormen aan te nemen volgens politie en douane. Vooral de XTC-achtige stof GHB is erg in trek. Er is alleen weinig aan te doen, aangezien de bezorging vaak gewoon door middel van een envelop gebeurt. Deze kunnen uiteraard niet allemaal gechecked worden, hoewel de politie misschien bij verslechtering van de zaak honden zal gaan trainen:

De Nederlandse politie en douane staan vrijwel machteloos tegenover het bestellen van geneesmiddelen en drugs via het internet. Het ontbreekt aan kennis en tijd. Daarbij gaan de ontwikkelingen te snel om effectief in te grijpen. Dat erkennen zowel politie als douane.

Het internet leent zich steeds vaker voor het bestellen van verboden of niet-geregistreerde middelen. Bij drugs gaat het met name om ghb (gamma hydroxy butarate), een stof die xtc-achtige gevoelens kan opwekken.

De politie erkent dat kant-en-klare pure ghb via internet gemakkelijk Nederland binnen komt. "Het zou niet moeten kunnen, maar we zijn nog te onervaren met het internet om het echt tegen te houden", zegt B. Wansing van het Projectburo Verdovende Middelen, verbonden aan het Utrechtse politiekorps.

Ook de douane staat min of meer machteloos tegen de invoer van geneesmiddelen en drugs via internet. "Mijn collega's komen vaak bij PTT-Post over de vloer. Maar we kunnen niet elk pakket controleren", geeft woordvoerster V. Castenmiller van de douane aan.

Bigs schrijft dat de Bulgaarse Expert Georgi Guninski door is gegaan op de bug die wij eerder al meldden in dit nieuwsbericht. Daar ging het om gebruikers van IE 5.0 of hoger onder Windows 98.

Nu is er een probleem dat alleen maar optreedt in IE 5.5, waarbij via een combinatie van ActiveX en JavaScript lokale bestanden zo gelezen en doorgestuurd kunnen worden. Natuurlijk ben ik op onderzoek uitgegaan en heb ik met ASP een pagina in elkaar geklust die een file (C:\Test.txt) in beeld opent en vervolgens via JavaScript doorsluist naar ASP, dat het bestand vervolgens laat zien (schrik trouwens niet; na de popup worden er nog 2 vensters geopend: 1x lokaal en 1x via mijn server). Ik zou bijvoorbeeld zo User.dat en System.dat vanuit Windows kunnen halen, op schijf opslaan en uiteindelijk allerlei gegevens uit het register kunnen halen.

Dit heb ik gerealiseerd met wat verstand van Java- en VBScript, de pagina van die Bulgaar en verder wat simpel redeneren...

Normally, a Web site can point to a local file on a visitor's computer and call that file up in a browser window. Under IE's security restrictions, only the visitor should be able to read it.

But in a scripting sleight of hand demonstrated by Bulgarian bug hunter Georgi Guninski, IE 5.5 lets the Web server inject a JavaScript address into the window displaying that local file--and through that scripting code read targeted files and relay them back to the Web server.

The fault lies in IE's Web Browser control, an ActiveX control that manages the sending and receiving of files. The problem is that the control is handling the JavaScript code in the security context of the visitor's computer, rather than in the Web site server that planted it.

Hiep hiep hoera! Microsoft viert haar 25ste verjaardag, zo meldt WinInformant. Voor deze grote gebeurtenis zijn 20.000 medewerkers van het bedrijf bij elkaar gekomen, onder andere voor een toespraak van oprichter Bill Gates. In dit verhaaltje is hij niet echt bescheiden, maar schept enorm op over zijn bedrijf. 'Ondanks het enorme succes in de afgelopen 25 jaar zal de toekomst nog beter zijn', is wat de ex-topman te melden heeft:

Als je dus een ingewikkeld adres hebt, hoeven mensen alleen maar naar ringmysite te gaan en het telefoonnummer in te typen. Of dit nou erg praktisch is, valt nog te betwijfelen lijkt me. Nu moet het telefoonnummer en "www.ringmysite.com" ook nog onthouden worden. Je schiet er dus niet zo veel mee op:

Sinds vandaag biedt een Nederlands bedrijf de mogelijkheid om het eigen telefoonnummer als internetadres te gebruiken. Dat is vooral zinvol als het websiteadres lang en moeilijk is te onthouden. Telecommunicatiebedrijven zoeken al langer naar bredere toepassingen van unieke telefoonnummers. Zo is het al mogelijk om e-mails te sturen van en naar mobiele telefoons.

CNET.com schrijft dat American Express waarschijnlijk vandaag zal aankondigen dat ze zullen komen met creditcardnummers voor eenmalig gebruik. Met deze technologie zal een groot probleem uit de E-commerce, creditcard fraude, in ieder geval voor een groot deel opgelost worden, fraude wordt op deze manier een stuk moeilijker gemaakt. Om deze reden zal dit, als het succesvol blijkt, ook een grote duw in de rug van de E-commerce betekenen:

American Express is expected to announce today an e-commerce initiative that includes the use of "disposable" credit card numbers.

Under the initiative, American Express cardholders will be able to log onto a secure Web site and receive a one-time-use credit card number for purchases over the Internet, sources familiar with the technology told CNET News.com.

The move could ease consumer fears that their credit cards are vulnerable to online theft. There have been several recent instances of credit card and other personal data being stolen from Web sites.

Representatives of American Express would not comment on the plan. The company has scheduled a press conference for 9 a.m. PT today.

De mannen van The Techzone hebben een korte review geschreven van een goedkope socket 370 koeler, de AMK K6550. De koeler is verkrijgbaar voor ongeveer hetzelfde bedrag als een standaard Intel heatsink & fan (10 dollar), maar de performance is aanzienlijk beter. Deze koeler haalt de temperatuur vergeleken met de standaard Intel koeler met ca. 5 graden naar beneden, slechts 1 graad minder als de Alpha PC-PAL35T. Een zeer goede prijs / performance ratio dus :

With either Alphas or AMK cooler installed, the P3-550 went all the way to 825Mhz.

AMK has done a great job on the K6550. With a price of just $9.99 it has to be the best bang for the buck cooler you can buy anywhere. If you're looking for a high performance cooler for your Coppermine or Celeron processor that doesn't cost more than a stock cooler, the AMK K6550 is it.

Gamers Depot levert ons als eerste een review van de Leadtek WinFast GeForce2 GTS kaart met 64MB 6ns DDR geheugen. De algemene indruk van de software, drivers en overklokmogelijkheden was zeer goed, en ook in de benchmarks wist de Leadtek telkens nét ietsie sneller te zijn dan zijn Hercules / Asus / Elsa concurrenten:

From a functionality point of view, the AX64 Pro BIOS allows full reign on choosing any of the available voltages, not just a range based on the CPU's default voltage. In fact, other than the warning message, AOpen has certainly not erred on the side of caution.

In case you're wondering, the AOpen “Pro” motherboards offer a much wider array of voltage tweaking and overclocking options than their standard products, hence the higher price. The AOpen AX64 Pro does stack up quite well against the competition and also includes value-added features such as the Die Hard BIOS, 24K Gold Heatsink and an excellent hardcopy manual.

NeoSeeker heeft een review van de nieuwe Casio WMP-1V MP3 polshorloge in elkaar gebouwd. Het horloge is er in smaken van 16 en 32MB en is USB compatible. Eenmaal volgeladen kan het ding dan voor 4 uur MP3's afdraaien mits de bitrate ervan niet hoger dan 128Kbit is. De geluidskwaliteit van de bijgeleverde oordopjes bleek verder ook vrij aardig te zijn. Met een prijs van 299 dollar is hij echter niet echt goedkoop te noemen. Niet de meest ideale MP3 oplossing dus, maar wel een leuke gadget:

All the quirks aside, the watch is an interesting step in the right direction. As technology improves, I imagine that future iterations of the Audio Wrist Watch will become increasingly appealing to a crowd of tech savvy consumers. Right now, I think the watch is more of a tech bauble - a toy if you will. And at a suggested retail price of $249US, I think it costs a little too much for what you get. Certainly the full size players we’ve seen in the past few weeks are a more appropriate investment for portable digital music. Although if you are an avid jogger or bicyclist, I can imagine that the watch’s combination of good audio quality and rugged portability could be a great boon. In the end, this is a very specialized product, and its price, limited storage capacity, and short battery life are all very strong considerations that would suggest you look elsewhere.

Sanyo heeft een 660-nanometer laser ontwikkeld waarmee de brandsnelheid van writable, rewritable en read-only DVD-disks verdubbelt kan worden. "Currently the CD-R drives market is expanding explosively," said Minoru Sawada, senior manager of opt-electronic devices department at Sanyo. "Soon manufacturers will begin competition in high-speed DVD-writable drives. Sanyo wants to establish an advantageous position in the laser market by introducing high-power lasers earlier [than competitors]."

The AlGaInP laser steadily emits a 660-nm single-mode laser with 80-mW output power in pulsed operation, which enables it to write data onto writable DVD disks at more than double the normal speed, said Sawada. For reading data, the laser can emit continuously (as required for reading) because output power for this function is as low as 5 mW.

CDRInfo.com schrijft dat we nog dit jaar 16x compatible 650MB CD-R schijfjes kunnen verwachten van het Koreaanse SKC. Volgens de geruchten zal Yamaha als eerste een 16x brander op de markt brengen waardoor het schrijven van een dergelijke CD slechts 4 en een halve minuut duurt .

GamePC heeft een vergelijking neergemikt tussen twee Natural tikplanken: de Logitech Cordless Desktop Pro en de Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro. De Logitech profiteert van het feit dat hij draadloos is maar kan irritatie veroorzaken vanwege de herplaatsing van een aantal toetsen en het ontbreken van lampies boven toetsen als Num Lock e.d. De Microsoft plank gebruikt een USB aansluiting en bleek over het algemeen wat zwaarder en meer comfortabel te zijn:

With that aside, the Natural Keyboard is definitely a plus when it comes to writing. It is more comfortable, and if you already know how to type, it will be only minutes before you are used to it. Both keyboards worked well, and have nice features. They are a bit pricey, and neither have significant features to improve game play or PC speed as do graphic cards or faster CPUs. Consider this, the Natural may not improve your PC game play, but you're tennis game will be better, as you won't suffer from sore wrists due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

In summary, if you're looking for extended range from your desktop, consider the wireless Logitech set up. If you're looking for an extra USB port with convenient access, the Microsoft is a good solution. If you're looking to add another cool option to your PC, you can't go wrong with either!

De Volkskrant schrijft vandaag dat in Duitsland eventueel een extra belasting op computers, telecommunicatie en internetapparatuur zal komen. Dit extra geld moet dan ten goede komen aan bijvoorbeeld muzikanten die door illegale CD-handels en MP3-bestanden veel royalties moeten missen. In principe een vrij logische oplossing alhoewel een verhoging van 30% wel erg overdreven is:

Duitsland overweegt een nieuwe belasting in te voeren op computers, telecommunicatie en internetapparatuur. Dat meldt het Duitse dagblad Berliner Zeitung. De nieuwe heffing moet ten goede komen aan auteurs, filmmakers en muzikanten die via nieuwe media hun werk verspreiden. Door het illegaal branden van cd's lopen muzikanten nu veel royalties mis.

De Duitse fiscus heft al een soortgelijke belasting op faxaparaten, scanners en fotokopieerapparaten. De nieuwe maatregel zou betekenen dat makers van computers, printers en cd-branders hun producten zo'n 30 procent duurder zien worden.

Vorige week kwam de Duitse minister van Financien Eichel met het plan om prive-internetgebruik op het werk te belasten. Volgens kenners is dat plan zeer lastig uitvoerbaar.

Matthew Witheiler heeft bij AnandTech een review online geketst van de Asus V7100/T GeForce2 MX kaart, uitgerust met composite en S-video TV-outputs en 32MB 6ns SDR Hyundai SDRAM dat maximaal 210MHz trok. Over de performance is dus weinig te klagen, nadeel is wel dat vanwege de extra outputs en uitgebreide software bundel de Asus V7100/T een relatief hoge prijs draagt:

So, what else makes the V7100 more expensive than some budget MX based cards? Well, for one the software bundle that comes with the V7100 series cards is much better than the nonexistent bundle found on many other GeForce2 MX based cards. Sure, it comes with the standard DVD software decoder and Colorific, but ASUS also throws in one of the hotter games of this year: Soldier of Fortune. This alone essentially saves you at least $30, that is if you were going to buy Solider of Fortune on your own. Then again, it does not do you too much good if you already have the game or are not interested in it.

The final thing that the extra cost of the V7100/T goes to is quality. If you recall, we started this review discussing the excellence of ASUS's products, and the V7100 is no exception. Incorporating a heatsink, thermal grease, quality memory, and custom drivers, the V7100 has definitely been thought out by ASUS, as as many of their other products have. So, if you are on the market for a TV-out capable GeForce2 MX, you can not go wrong with the ASUS V7100/T.

De mannan van Hardware Central hebben vandaag een smakelijke review geproduceerd, een over de Midiland S4/8200 speakerset. Deze speakers staan bekend om hun superieure geluidskwaliteit en geluidsniveaus, en volgens Hardware Central is dat terecht. Een paar kleine nadelen zijn wel dat er weinig knopjes zijn om het volume aan te passen, en aparte tweeters waren volgens de reviewer ook leuk geweest. Een hapje uit de conclusie:

In terms of sound quality, the S4/8200s are, for the most part, wonderful. The sound is incredibly clear and warm, if lacking a little brightness at times. Mid-ranges are excellent, and the subwoofer truly has to be heard to be believed. This magnitude and quality of sound from a relatively small enclosure and 6.5" woofer is a testament to MidiLand's design work.

We had a complaint similar to one with the S4/7100 system, and that's that we feel separate tweeters are really necessary. We realize that would come at increased cost, however we would offer that anyone seeking to purchase a system of this caliber likely won't mind paying a bit extra for the improved quality.

Perhaps the thing that impressed us the most about the S4/8200s (aside from the sound quality) was the construction quality. It's very clear that MidiLand has paid tremendous attention to detail, from the impressive subwoofer design, to the high-quality drivers, right down to the heavy-guage speaker wires. MidiLand constructs its own drivers and components, and the S4/8200 system is even hand-assembled to assure quality. The only part of the system MidiLand doesn't make itself is the ADS-2000 decoder.

Well, I suppose that's the price you pay for the privilege of owning a "flag-ship" class card. It's the same with any hobby, be it cars, HiFi, bikes, houses, or anything else. Luxury is never really rational, but usually more a matter of fun and personal pride - being able to count yourself to the certain elite that has what few others have.

Hmm, really, if you own this card, you'll also need a transparent case with a massive padlock, a remote-controlled alarm system, electric case-opening, and....ah, okay, I think you get the picture...

Seagate heeft onder de naam Barracuda ATA III de (volgens eigen zeggen) eerste vierde generatie 7200rpm IDE harddisk aangekondigd. Digital Web 3D heeft een roundup van zeven moederplankjes met de VIA KT133 chipset bijeen gemikt. Onder de deelnemers bevinden zich de Tyan Trinity KT, MSI K7T Pro, Transcent TS-AKT4, AOpen MK33, Gigabyte GA-7XZ en Asus A7V. Het MSI plankje kwam dankzij z'n goede stabiliteit als beste uit de test. De Asus A7V gooide hoge ogen vanwege z'n uitgebreide featureset en de AOpen MK33 viel op vanwege z'n goede benchmark resultaten. Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 1e en heeft een kans van één op 9 om de sleutel te vinden!

Uit een PowerPoint presentatie van Iwill (neerhaalbaar vanaf ALi's FTP site) blijkt dat deze mobofabrikant voor het komende half jaar zes nieuwe mammaplankjes met DDR support heeft gepland. De borden zijn gebaseerd op chipsets van ALi, VIA en ServerWorks.

Iwill KA266-R

Het eerste DDR bord dat we van Iwill mogen verwachten is het KA266-R Socket A plankje, waarvan de release dat voor begin oktober is gepland. De KA266-R is gebaseerd op de ALi MaGiK 1 chipset en heeft drie 184-pins DIMMs slots, een onboard IDE RAID controller van American Megatrends, 5xPCI en 1xCNR. Hoewel PC1600 en PC2100 DDR SDRAM worden ondersteund, blijft de FSB (officieel) beperkt tot 200MHz datarate. Iwill belooft voor overklokkers nog wat extra settings boven 200MHz.

Iwill KAM266-R

Eind oktober volgt de KAM266-R, een low-end MicroATX plankje bedoelt voor Duron systemen. De KAM266-R maakt evenals de KA266-R gebruik van de MaGiK 1 chipset.

Iwill IA266-R

Halverwege november wordt een Socket370 PIII/Celeron bord met de Acer Labs M1651 chipset gereleased. Ook op dit bord is een AMI IDE RAID controller aanwezig. De functionaliteit van deze controller is evenals de produkten van Promise en HighPoint beperkt tot de RAID levels 0, 1 en 0+1.

Iwill DVD266-R

De Iwill DVD266-R is een entry-level dual Pentium III server/workstation plank met VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset en geïntegreerde AMI RAID controller. De release is gepland voor de komende december.

Iwill DSI266-S

Voor het betere werk heeft Iwill de DSI266-S in ontwikkeling. Dit is een serieuze server tafelplank met de ServerWorks ServerSet IV chipset en een onboard Ultra320 SCSI controller van Qlogic. Op het bord kunnen twee P4's geplant worden. In het eerste kwartaal van 2001 wordt de DSI266-S op de markt verwacht.

Laguna heeft het voor elkaar gekregen om toch nog wat stats van 4 september bij elkaar te scharrelen, en hier zijn ze dan, hoewel helaas niet volledig:
