[eNeRGy] meldt op het forum dat er een glasvezelbreuk is. Hierdoor is een van de masterkeyserver niet bereikbaar, wat er uiteindelijk toe lijd dat er niet op alle keyproxies geflushed worden. Om te voorkomen dat de blokjes niet voor het eind van de dag bij de keymasters belanden, is het belangrijk dat de load verdeeld wordt over de nog werkende proxies:

In Amerika heeft er een glasvezelbreuk plaats gevonden waardoor de keymaster slecht tot niet bereikbaar is. Hierdoor hopen er zich enorm veel keys op op de keyproxies van Distributed.net. Om er toch zoveel mogelijk blokjes erdoor te laten komen moet er even anders geflushed worden.

Dit moet handmatig gedaan worden, en dat kan alsvolgt:

- Start de client met parameter -config (meestal dnetc.exe -config)
- Ga naar menu 2 (Buffer and Buffer Update Options)

- Kies submenu 6 (Keyserver<->client connectivity options)
- Zet eerst optie 2 (Automatically select a distributed.net keyserver?) op 'no'
- Vervolgens kun je bij de opties 3 en 4 de naam en poort van een van de proxies invullen
- Stel optie 5 (Keyserver is a personal proxy on a protected LAN?) in op 'yes'

Op deze manier kunnen er nog zo veel mogelijk blokken voor 02:00uur geflushed worden. Als er veel blokken nog morgen binnenkomen betekent dat gewoon dat MegaFlush 6 in dag langer is geworden (helaas).

Asus heeft vandaag bekend gemaakt dat ze nog een nieuwe smaak GeForce2 op de markt gaan brengen, de Asus V7700 DeLuxe TV. De V7700 DeLuxe TV zet een traditie van Asus voort om de meest complete videokaart te maken, en zoals de naam aangeeft heet deze kaart als extra mogelijkheid het TV gluren. Deze kaart heeft dezelfde features als de normale V7700 DeLuxe , en heeft dus niet zoals de Ati all-in-wonder Radeon minder en langzamer geheugen. Een feature waar 1/3 van de press release over gaat is de TimeShifting optie van de TV, een feature die ook bij de Radeon te vinden is.

De prijs is wel flink pittig, de 32MB versie gaat 379 dollar kosten en de 64MB versie moet zelfs 479 dollar kosten. Voor dat laatste bedrag kan je al bijna een GeForce2 Ultra kopen, en voor 100 piek moet je ook wel een TV kaartje op de kop kunnen tikken, dus het lijkt erop dat de price/performance ratio niet erg gunstig ligt. Maar één ding is zeker, dit is in iedergeval wel de beste GeForce2 :

Wazige Japanse Site heeft wat info gepost over de nieuwe Sony Vaio subnotebooks met Transmeta Crusoe TM5600 proc. Deze TM5600 CPU heeft een klok van 600MHz, een een L1 cache van 128KB en een L2 cache van 256K. Verder zijn de mini laptopjes voorzien van 128MB RAM, een ATi Rage Mobility M1 videochip, een 12Gig harddisk en een TFT display met een resolutie van 1024 bij 768 pixels.

Op ProCool.com staat een verhaaltje over hoe je een gelockte AMD processor weer kunt unlocken. Op zich is het niet echt nieuws, aangezien wij dit al eens hadden uitgezocht. Toch leuk nieuws om te melden misschien voor de mensen die het nog niet weten en dubbel leuk omdat wij er genoemd staan .

Well, that's the other end of those 4 BP_FID pins AMD has removed from Week 36 and later Duron/TBird's. So, what you do, is you solder 4 wires onto there, just like you see in that picture (yes, you will need to be godlike with your soldering iron) and run the wires under your motherboard, and solder them to the pins under the socket where they belong.
This is meant as a short and sweet news article, I know it could be better, I could have mapped out which pins, and had some nice diagrams drawn out, but time does not allow for such.

Het lijkt er dan toch eindelijk op dat de rest van de wereld er achter begint te komen dat op de manier die wij al 2 maanden geleden hadden ontdekt alle AMD cpu's te ontdoen zijn van de lock .

Oehoe submitte dit nieuws, zodat wij er weer wat leuks van konden maken...

Het lijkt er nu toch echt van te komen, de eerste Socket A naar Slot A converters zijn onderweg. Volgens eerdere geruchten zou het niet mogelijk / te duur zijn om zulke convertors te bouwen, maar dat lijkt dus niet waar te zijn. De kans is wel groot dat overclocken van een Duron / Thunderbird niet zo soepeltjes zal gaan als op een KT133 plankje aangzien je door de langere traces eerder last van timing problemen krijgt.

Bij de hardware site pc-mac2000 kan je een pre-order voor een Socket A -> Slot A convertor plaatsen. Ze verwachten maar 250 stuks, dus als je er een wil hebben moet je er snel bij zijn. Zoals al te verwachten was zijn ze niet goedkoop, als je ze daar besteld ben je 43.46 euro kwijt.

Een onbekende persoon heeft een groot aantal websites gehacked, zodat er een boodschap over Napster op het scherm verscheen, zo meldt CNET. Hierin scheldt hij het RIAA onder andere uit voor "fat cats" en ook worden nog wat andere negatieve mededelingen over de organisatie gedaan. Volgens de hacker zelf zijn met deze actie 50 sites onder handen genomen, maar inclusief eerdere aanvallen staat zijn totalstat nu al op 110. Voor de hacks gebruikte hij een beveiligingslek in Microsoft's Windows NT:

A pseudonymous hacker has launched a Web graffiti spree, defacing Web sites ranging from NASA to the Communications Workers of America with a pro-Napster message. The pranks come after a court ruling that could force another online music service, MP3.com, to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for copyright infringement.

Craig Campanaro van Planet Hardware heeft eens gekeken naar de MSI MS-6337 Pro moederplaat gebaseerd op Intels i815e chipset. Naast een goede lay-out en stabiliteit kun je met dit plankje ook redelijk overklokken vanuit a) Windows met het Fuzzy Logic 2 proggie of b) via het uitgebreide BIOS die FSB stappen van 1MHz tot 166MHz ondersteunt. Het voltage kun je tot en met 1.95v instellen:

As if the Fuzzy Logic 2 program weren't enough, the MS-6337 has a detailed BIOS section devoted to adjusting the voltage and front side bus speed of the CPU. 1MHz FSB increments are available for use from 66 to 166MHz, and voltage ranges of 1.3 to 1.95v are selectable. For the most part the MS-6337 exceeded our expectations when overclocking the board, running our unlocked Intel Engineering Sample CPUs at front side bus speeds up to 160MHz without failure. Regardless, each mainboard is likely to be slightly different from one to the next, and your overclocking ability may vary from what we've witnessed and reported here. In general though we'd expect most ASUS, ABIT, MSI, and AOpen mainboards to be solid overclocking platforms thanks to the good experiences we've had with dozens of products we've tested from these companies over the past three years.

Thresh's Vuurpeleton heeft de Celeron 600 eens vergelijken met zijn Duron 600 concurrent, twee low-budget CPU'tjes die je momenteel voor een prikkie in huis kunt halen. Dat de Duron vrij gemakkelijk alle tests naar zich toe trekt is geen verrassing meer, als je bereidt bent te investeren in een relatief duur socket A moederbord is dit zonder twijfel de meest verantwoorde keuze:

Wow. AMD has quite a winner in this little chip. There is no doubt whatsoever, as to which CPU comes out on top. The Duron left the Celeron in the dust on every test. Combine excellent performance with a rock bottom price and you can't lose. For those of you considering a new cheap system, the Duron will provide ample power for the buck. In terms of overclocking, you had better get your hands on a Duron very quickly- most of these CPUs will hit around 800-900MHz, but there are rumors that AMD will soon step up its anti-overclocking measures. This entails clipping pins from the bottom of the CPU itself.

If you are going to go for the gold when overclocking the Duron, a good motherboard will be essential. This niche can easily be handed to the Asus A7V and Abit KT7. The only drawbacks are their relatively high prices, roughly $140 to $160 for either one. This kind of makes it scary, since it is unknown how long AMD will stick with the Socket A connector. With Intel, we have had some form of interchangeable connector, making motherboards last for years. Case in point, my Abit BH6: I had a Celeron 300a in there, and even now, I could drop in a P3 Coppermine.

You can't make any strong arguments about buying the Celeron II anymore. These processors overclock decently, but the performance of an overclocked Celeron still doesn't equal that of an overclocked Duron

Onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Pennsylvania hebben een nieuw materiaal ontdekt, Carbon nanotubes, de beste warmtegeleider bekend bij de mensheid. De toepassing van deze warmtegeleider bij computerchips kan het warmte probleem van huidige chips elimineren. Ook zijn er toepassingen te bedenken binnen (electro-) motoren, onderdelen van plastic behoren dan bijvoorbeeld tot de mogelijkheden :

The findings suggest that these exotic strands, already heralded for their unparalleled strength and unique ability to adopt the electrical properties of either semiconductors or perfect metals, may someday also find applications as miniature heat conduits in a host of devices and materials.

iXBT Labs heeft wat info gepost over de MSI MS-6366 moederplank met de VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset. Voor zover bekend is dit het eerste DDR plankje waar je zowel nieuwe 184-pins DDR DIMMs als traditionele 168-pins SDR DIMMs in kunt mikken. De release van het bord staat gepland voor november:

Bij TweakTown is vandaag een review te vinden van de VisionTek GeForce2 MX, de budget kaart onder de budget kaarten. Als belangrijkste kost besparende optie is er voor gekozen om gebruik te maken van 143MHz geheugen wat standaard overgeclocked is naar 166MHz. Om deze reden is het niet de ideale kaart om te tweaken, maar als je toch niet overclockt dan is dat niet echt een probleem en is het prijskaartje van slechts 108 dollar heel aantrekkelijk :

The PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is very bland; with a quick glance over the Visiontek MX card it's easy to see Visiontek have opted to stay with the exact same reference design by nVidia thus leaving a lot of extra PCB room as you can see in the image below...

Although, something had to be done to keep the Visiontek MX card at a responsible cost / performance ratio. What Visiontek have in fact done is include 32MB of Samsung 7ns 143MHz SDRAM, whereas the nVidia GeForce2 MX reference board comes fitted with 6ns 166MHz SDRAM. To make this card a performance competitor against other GeForce2 MX cards, Visiontek have shipped the 32MB (4x8mb chips) of Samsung 7ns 143MHz SDRAM overclocked at 166MHz (6ns). If you plan to buy this card to overclock, keep in mind that it is already out of spec and you'll be overclocking the SDRAM even more then it already is. While the Samsung 7ns 143MHz SDRAM was running at 166MHz we didn't notice any crashes or lockup's. With this being the case, I guess there's nothing really to worry about - unless you want to clock the memory core up even higher.

[...] As we saw in the benchmarking process up above, the Visiontek GF2 MX card is by no means faster than the GF2 GTS. However, when it comes to the price / performance ratio the Visiontek GF2 MX is by far the winner. The Visiontek comes packed full of nice features and while the overclockability (with no HSF) isn't fabulous it is still nice. The inclusion of a HSF would have been nice for us overclockers to tweak around with things a bit more, but considering this is a budget card that would be generally expected. For those that are looking for a new graphics card and don't want to fork out $600 AUD or so for a GF2 GTS, go with a Visiontek GF2 MX which will easily cope with all your latest games such as Q3A, while maintaining a nice frame rate when high quality graphics mode is enabled. Remember though, once you start increasing the resolution in various games over 1024x768 the frame rate diminishes rather quickly. If you are the type of gamer which is happy using 800x600 or 1024x768 you will be quite pleased with the Visiontek GeForce2 MX graphics card speed and quality wise.

SiR laat weten dat de bevrijding nabij is voor inwoners van Almelo en omliggende nederzettingen. Vanaf 15 september gaat Cogaskabel in samenwerking met Essent en @Home internet via de kabel aanbieden. Na een korte testperiode kunnen de tukkertjes (hier spreekt een rasechte Graafschapper ) vanaf november voor 89 piek per maand het net op:

De toegang tot het wereldwijde internet kan nu ook via de kabel van Cogas. De technische kant van de zaak is nu helemaal klaar en ook zijn alle randvoorwaarden inmiddels ingevuld. Op 15 september begint de testperiode in Oldenzaal en afhankelijk van het verloop van die test kunnen in oktober de eerste abonnees worden aangesloten. Direct daaropvolgend zal de test in Almelo beginnen en wel vanaf 15 oktober. In november kunnen de Almelose abonnees dan gebruik maken van internet via de kabel.

Cogas doet dat in samenwerking met Essent Kabelcom en @Home Benelux. In grote lijnen komt het er op neer dat Cogas naast de tv- en radiosignalen ook internetdiensten aanbiedt zodat, net als in het Essent Kabelcom-gebied, @Home op de kabel beschikbaar is.

De voordelen van internetten via de Cogas-kabel zijn onder andere dat voor een vast bedrag in de maand de abonnee de gehele dag op internet actief kan zijn, dat internetten via de kabel vele malen sneller is dan via de telefoonlijn en dat die telefoonlijn vrij blijft waarvoor hij is bedoeld: telefoneren. Per aansluiting kan men maximaal 3 e-mailadressen krijgen en een eigen homepage. De complete installatie van internet op de computer van de abonnee wordt door Cogas verzorgd. De eenmalige bijdrage is ƒ 299,-- en de abonnementskosten bedragen per maand ƒ 89,--.

Het is de bedoeling dat alle 75.000 klanten die op het Cogas-kabelnet zijn aangesloten in 2001 van deze diensten gebruik kunnen maken; bijna het gehele Cogas-netwerk is daartoe al retourgeschikt gemaakt.

nVNews heeft een interview met Steve Mosher van Creative Labs op het net gemikt. Steve weet ons onder andere te vertellen dat er geen tekort bestaat aan de snelle 4 - 4,4ns DDR SDRAM chips die gebruikt worden op de nieuwe GeForce2 Ultra kaarten met 460MHz memclock. Er zijn geen plannen om gebruik te maken van minder dure 4,5ns chips, die onder de vereiste specs van 460MHz presteren:

nV News: 4ns DDR - You mentioned memory speed would not be a gating factor, will the memory on production cards meet the promised 460MHz? Are you going to risk using slower memory, say 4.5ns, if 4ns supplies run short?

Steve: The specified speed for the product will be 460Mhz. I am not aware of anything like a 4.5ns but a 4.5ns memory would only clock to 222mhz or 444 effective. To achieve 230Mhz you have to use a memory that has been tested at this speed or above. To insure that the product performs to this level of performance every card is put through a manufacturing test. So, you buy memory that is specified to run at 250MHz, you use a chip that is assured of running at this speed, and then you have to use a board design that is qualified to run at this speed in a wide variety of systems. After you assemble these pieces you then test 100% of the boards to insure that the manufacturing process has not impacted performance. That way you are sure that 100% of the boards will run at the specified performance. Statistically some may run faster. There isn't any shortage of memory that is qualified to meet the spec.

Voor de tweakers met een beperkter budget heeft Creative een GeForce2 MX kaartje met DDR SDRAM op de planning. Zoals je eerder hebt kunnen lezen kan de GeForce2 MX gecombineerd worden met DDR SDRAM, maar alleen als de breedte van de geheugenbus met de helft wordt gehalveerd. De GeForce2 MX DDR kaarten zullen ons dus niet verblijden met een hogere performance:

Wired News schrijft dat een wazig guerilla groepje van pissige Apple gebruikers heeft gedreigd dat zij de toespraak van Steve Jobs op de komende Apple Expo in Parijs zullen verstoren. De actie groep vindt dat Apple fout omgaat met haar gebruikers, met name de klanten in Europa. Verder zijn ze niet gelukkig met de rechtszaken die regelmatig door het Apple advocatenleger worden aangespannen tegen websites en personen die informatie over ongereleasde Apple produkten publiceren. De actie van de groep is gepland op 13 september, de dag waarop de public beta van MacOS X wordt vrijgelaten:

According to an email credited to the "Expo Protest Team" that was sent to Wired News, the group will be griping about three key issues: Apple's treatment of its users, the company's legal threats against websites and people who release information about Apple products before a product's official release, and Apple's treatment of its European customers, particularly those in the Great Britain.

The email says that the planned protest will take the form of an "alternative" speech by team members that will be delivered "in the middle" of Job's keynote speech.

According to an anonymous email sent by a person who claimed to be a member of the group, the protesters will "have a number of people planted in the audience, so that as one protesting speech-giver is ushered from the room, another will pop up to take his or her place, and so on.
