Nadat eerder deze week multiscope de best bezochte sites van het jaar 2000 bekend maakte volgde er al redelijk snel kritiek. Niet alleen hier onder de tweakers, Tweakers.net haalt tegen de 500.000 pageviews per dag en staat niet in de lijst, Maar ook de maker van gratiz.nl had zo zijn twijfels bij dit onderzoek. Hij kreeg in de maand Oktober 2.1 miljoen unieke bezoekers toegewezen door Multiscope, terwijl er volgens zijn nedstat teller "slechts" 600.000 pageviews die maand kwamen. Multiscope zegt hierop:

Appels en peren worden er volgens Multiscope vergeleken in de kritiek. Het e-zine Onlijn plaatste vorige week een artikel waarin de maker van Gratiz.nl zijn vraagtekens zet bij de Visiscan-methode waarmee Multiscope het bezoek aan internetsites meet. Hij doet dit aan de hand van de gegevens die hij zelf verzamelt over het bezoek aan zijn site via een Nedstat-teller.

Volgens het onderzoeksbureau gaat deze vergelijking mank. 'Nedstat meet vooral pageviews, terwijl Visiscan vooral unieke bezoekers rapporteert', aldus Multiscope in een persverklaring. De vergelijking zou volgens het bureau alleen enigszins opgaan als op alle pagina's van de site een teller wordt geplaatst. Visiscan neemt volgens Multiscope wel alle onderliggende pagina's mee in het onderzoek.

Voor veel van de lezers zal er weinig nieuwe informatie in staan, maar het is altijd goed om nog iets bij te leren . Andrew Worobiew van Digit-Life heeft een review online gezet over de GeForce2 Ultra kaart van Leadtek, de Winfast GeForce2 Ultra. Deze kaart is zoals de meeste GeForce2 Ultra's uitgerust met 4ns geheugen, een core op 250MHz en een flink prijskaartje. Verder is de kaart is het bezit van een paar stijlvolle heatsinks op het geheugen en een bijpassende heatsink op de core. Hoewel het heatsink design door het ontbreken van koelvinnen op het eerste gezicht niet al te best lijkt weet de kaart toch erg goede overclockresultaten neer te zetten. De core / geheugensnelheid kon namelijk maximaal op de niet misselijke setting van 315MHz / 515MHz gezet worden wat een snelheidswinst van bijna 15 procent opleverde :

OCworkbench heeft een paar pagina's text geschreven over het SL-75KVA-X moederbord van Soltek. Deze printplaat is gebaseerd op de KT133A chipset en er wonen onder andere 5 PCI, 1 ISA en 1 AGP Pro slot op. Uiteraard werd een flink aantal benchmarks gedraaid en keek men ook naar de Auto-overclock feature in het BIOS. Het bord bleek goed te presteren en de conclusie is daarom ook zeer positief:

This board actually surpasses the all the boards we have tested so far in performance. This can be clearly seen form it's CPU Winbench99 results. The newer North Bridge which officially supports the 133 (266) Mhz FSB also brought new life to your old Duron 600.

ATA100 performance is also incorporated using the latest VIA South Bridge 686B. Most of the overclocking functions are manipulated from the BIOS except for VI/O and multiplier. It would probably be better if it is incorporated within the BIOS. Auto-Overclocking feature in Revision 5 of the BIOS is impressive, it's much better than those software provided by the bigger players (you know who they are) which do not really work.

Microsoft heeft aangekondigd dat de MCSE examens over Windows NT 4.0, die eigenlijk vanaf 31 december niet meer afgenomen zouden worden, nu nog gehaald kunnen worden tot 28 februari 2001. De examens worden vervangen door Windows 2000 examens.

Bij CPUReview is een interessant artikel verschenen over de prijzen van Intel en AMD processoren in het (bijna) afgelopen jaar. In een aantal tabellen worden de prijzen en de verschillen daartussen van een aantal perioden met elkaar vergeleken. Erg opvallend is dat het relatieve verschil tussen de prijzen van de Pentium III en de Athlon alleen maar groter wordt. Laatst nog heeft Intel haar prijzen verlaagd, maar AMD volgde ook weer snel door sommige processoren met meer dan 50% in prijs te verlagen. De uiteenlopende prijzen zijn duidelijk te zien in de volgende tabel, die de relatie tussen de prijs van de P3 en de prijs van de Athlon weergeeft:

Omdat tegenwoordig de Pentium 4 Intel's topmodel is, wordt ook een vergelijking gemaakt tussen de prijs van een P4 systeem en een Athlon systeem. Als je op dit moment een moederbord, processor en geheugen aanschaft, ben je als er uitgegaan wordt van 128MB geheugen met de P4 1,4GHz meer dan 2,3 maal zoveel kwijt als met een Athlon 1,2GHz. Bij de Athlon wordt hierbij uitgegaan van één van de duurdere moederborden, de Abit KT7-RAID.

Samengevat kunnen we zeggen dat het zeker een interessante tijd is voor iedereen die de aanschaf van een nieuwe processor overweegt, en dat AMD op dit moment zeer aantrekkelijke prijzen hanteert.

VIAHardware.com heeft een review in elkaar gedraaid van de PowerColor Evil Kyro 64MB, gebaseerd op de PowerVR 3 grafische chipset. De Evil Kyro-reeks richt zich op de budgetmarkt, en wordt in deze review tegenover een GeForce256 DDR gezet. Deze laatste komt de laatste tijd ook steeds meer in de budget-regionen terecht, maar is nog steeds een stuk duurder dan de Evil Kyro 64MB, die slechts $139 moet opbrengen.

De prestaties van de Kyro zijn redelijk. Op 1024x768x32 in 3DMark 2000 is het verchil in punten met de GeForce DDR niet groot. de Quake3 benchmarks vertellen echter een heel ander verhaal; met de high quality-instelling op 1024x768 is de GeForce DDR meer dan anderhalf keer zo snel. De reviewer verwacht echter dat er nog heel wat aan de prestaties van de PowerVR 3 gedaan kan worden, en dat het zeker een veelbelovende GPU is:

I would have to attribute the Kyro’s loss of power at higher details level to two main factors. One being the low core clock speed is hampering the performance of the internal Z-Buffer. For a new product of this generation running a core clock at 115Mhz is just insanely low. Granted, the fact that it is an entirely new chipset architecture is probably conspiring to limit the workable clock speeds. Given time I am certain that ST can improve upon the core design, which will allow it to scale to higher clock speeds.

I can’t help but feel that the SDR memory is also restricting the Kyro, even if ST does tout it as not needing higher memory bandwidth. Given time the Kyro does show good promise. I have no doubt that given time, and improvements to both the drivers and the core itself, the Kyro could indeed position itself as a contender in the market. For right now, with an estimated street prices of $129-139, much better performance would be realized out of a GeForce2 MX based AGP card. The biggest difference that the immaturity of the Kyro does allow it a lot more room for improvement than the MX does because that is a mature product with mature drivers. Once newer drivers are available on the market, I will be re-visting the Kyro to see how it scales, and hopefully we will also get a chance to see how InnoVISION’s version of the Kyro will perform as well.

Bij Hexus.net is een review te vinden van de VP6, Abit's gloednieuwe dual FC-PGA moederbord gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Het bord werd getest met twee Pentium III 700MHz processoren, draaiend op 933MHz (7x133). De reviewer was zeer tevreden over het systeem, dat in veel benchmarks bijna even goed scoorde als een dual P3 1GHz setup op een Intel i820 chipset. Voor de verandering blijkt uit de Quake3 benchmarks van de VP6 dat SMP inschakelen best voor verbetering kan zorgen.

Er was één probleem: de 256MB DIMM die gebruikt werd wilde niet op CAS 2 draaien, hoewel dit op andere moederborden geen probleem was:

Can we now answer the question we posed at the top of our review? Is performance bad enough for Abit to plead with sites not to review it yet? Nope, I think performance is adequate. How about this? During testing, while trying to tweak memory settings, we came across a significant brick wall. Whenever we tried to set the CAS memory latency to 2, from 3, Win2K would blue screen upon booting and warn us that the BIOS in the system was not ACPI compliant! The screen told us to check hardware-support.com for an updated BIOS and gave us a method of disabling ACPI support while installing Win2K.

De reviewer had op dit foutje na geen andere klachten te melden; het bord presteerde goed, was stabiel en bood ruim voldoende mogelijkheden tot overclocken.

Bij FiringSquad is net een review neergemikt van de Asus CUSL2-C. Dit FCPGA moederbord is gebaseerd op de i815EP chipset, dus zonder integrated graphics. Verder is hij uitgerust met 1xAGP, 6xPCI, 1xCNR en 3 DIMM sloten. Vergeleken met zijn voorganger beschikt hij ook over dezelfde performance en overclockbaarheid middels het BIOS; een P3-700E bereikte met een 136MHz bussnelheid 952MHz. Aangezien hij ook nog eens aardig wat goedkoper is geworden valt er vrij weinig te klagen :

With its robust BIOS, hardware enthusiasts can tweak to their hearts delight. At the same time however, the board has plenty of features that make it easy to use for those who are less familiar with the ins and outs of setting up and installing a motherboard. A perfect example of this is the help menu present inside the motherboards BIOS, as well as the CUSL2-C's safe mode feature. Via the iPanel, the CUSL2-C is an even enjoyable motherboard to own.

Wrapping up the package is the CUSL2-C's excellent performance and reliability. The CUSL2-C system ran rock-solid throughout all of our tests, even when overclocked.

It's too bad the 815EP chipset was just released recently. If the chipset had been available a few months ago, we would have been all over it. Now we're curious to see how VIA's Apollo Pro266 DDR chipset pans out. If the added bandwidth provided by the DDR memory really pans out, this will be the performance chipset to get for Intel's P6 platform. As it stands now though, 815EP is the best solution currently available. By integrating the proven design of the CUSL2 with the 815EP chipset, ASUS has created yet another winner, and we wholeheartedly recommend this motherboard to anyone looking for a high performance yet solid design.

Volgens het Duitse Chip.de zal de opvolger van de GeForce2 GTS, codenamed NV20, in februari aangekondigd worden. Het is aannemelijk dat de eerste fabrikanten in maart tijdens de CeBIT beurs hun nieuwe videokaarten zullen tonen:

Volgens X-Bit Labs zijn er overigens geruchten die een release datum van 27 februari beweren.

Volgens Taiwanese van X-Bit Labs zal 3dfx deze maand starten met de productie van haar VSA-101 graphics chip. In tegenstelling tot de VSA-100 (van de Voodoo4 en 5) wordt er gebruik gemaakt van een 0,18micron proces wat kloksnelheden van 200MHz mogelijk maakt. Voor de rest blijven de features hetzelfde. Ondersteuning voor DDR SDRAM schijnt ook niet aanwezig zijn:

One of our Taiwanese sources told us that 3dfx is planning to start manufacturing its new VSA-101 chips (aka Daytona and initially called VSA-200). They will differ from the standard VSA-100 (Napalm) chips by a more progressive manufacturing technology: 0.18 micron. As a result, these chips will support higher working frequencies (around 200MHz). As for the other features, they will remain the same as those of VSA-100. unfortunately, the expected DDR SDRAM support doesn’t seem to be implemented in the new chips… it’s a pity.

HotHardware heeft een GeForce2 MX van het onbekende X-Micro onderzocht. X-Micro is pas in 1999 opgericht en heeft al verschillende grafische kaartjes uitgebracht. De Hulk V GeForce2 MX heeft twee TV-out aansluitingen (RCA en S-video) en beschikt over 32MB 6ns SDRAM dat standaard op 166MHz is geklokt. Dankzij de heatsink en fan kan deze kaart nog aardig getweaked worden.

The nVidia reference design of the GeForce 2 MX doesn’t call for a heat sink or a fan of any kind, yet the good folks at X-Micro had the presence of mind to add one anyway. On top of that, they even used thermal paste to insure good heat transfer, a very nice touch in our opinion. All but the most hardcore overclockers should appreciate the default setup.

[...] In general, this card offers a great balance between features and price. For around $105, you’ll get a quality GeForce 2 MX with very good overall performance and above average over-clocking ability. I think that any casual gamer that plunks down the cash for this card will be quite happy with how it handles today’s increasingly complex games.

Bij tech-review.com is een review neergebeamed van de Uproar mobiele telefoon met ingebouwde MP3 speler van Samsung. Voor het MP3 gedeelte heeft de Uproar 64MB flash geheugen aan boord en een USB poort om dit makkelijk en snel vol te kunnen tanken met je favoriete MP3'tjes. De specs klinken dus goed en dat doet de Uproar volgens de reviewer ook . Een paar kleine minpuntjes zijn er wel, maar niks ernstigs en de reviewer is dan ook uitermate positief:

In terms of form, features, function, and ease-of-use I believe Samsung deserves an award for putting together such a great package. They did an excellent job of taking a huge amount of features and packing them into an easy to navigate and use interface. In addition, they seamlessly added an MP3 player into a phone that without such a feature would still be a great product. However, it is this very feature that takes the Uproar and makes it one of, if not the best mobile phone on the U.S. market today.

It is definitely a must have for those that want to ditch having to carry around both a cell phone and MP3 player. It's also a great phone for those simply looking for a new mobile phone, with the MP3 feature an excellent extra bonus. Overall, I give it a "Highly Recommended" rating.

De Automatisering Gids komt met het nieuws dat Quantum, producent van opslagapparatuur, streeft naar het ontwikkelen van een tape met een capaciteit van één terabyte. Opvallend is dat hierbij geen compressie wordt gebruikt.

De firma Quantum, producent van opslagsystemen, heeft gisteren een nieuwe generatie digitale tapes en bijbehorende drives op de markt gebracht. Het gaat om de Super DLT, die momenteel een capaciteit heeft van 110 gigabyte. Binnen afzienbare tijd zal Quantum een volkomen vernieuwde tape gereed hebben met een opslagcapaciteit van een terabyte (duizend gigabyte). “Let wel, het gaat dan om de intrinsieke capaciteit van de tape, dus zonder gebruik te hoeven maken van compressie”, aldus Philippe Ory van Quantum.

[...] De Super Digital Linear Tape (DLT) zoals het opslagmedium voluit heet, maakt gebruik van een speciale optische techniek om de lees/schrijfkop op het juiste spoor te houden. De tapes hebben een dichtheid van 896 sporen per inch (ook wel aangeduid met de Engelse afkorting tpi). Verhoging van het aantal sporen is mogelijk, want een CD-Rom bezit een dichtheid van 16.000 tpi, terwijl een moderne DVD 35.000 sporen per inch heeft.

Neoseeker heeft een review gemaakt van de Sony Spressa CD-RW kit. Naast een CRX160E drive krijg je bij deze kit een IDE-kabel, een CD-R en CD-RW schijfje. De meegeleverde software bestaat onder andere uit Sony CD-Extreme, voor het maken van VCD's, CD-ROM's en audio CD's. Ondanks de brandsnelheden van 12X schrijven en 8X herschrijven en een 4MB buffer, beschikt de CRX160E niet over burn-proof technologie.

So did we like the Spressa drive –yes. Do we think it’s worth rushing out and buying one if you have never owned a CD-RW drive before Definitely! What about if you already own a fast 10X or 12X CD-RW drive but lack the faster 8X Re-write speeds? Our suggestion to this dilemma would be –if you need the faster re-write speeds then go for it, if you don’t then wait a while until you can justify spending the money!

The Spressa Professional recording system is a nicely rounded package that delivers average read speeds and great write and re-write speeds. The software package is nice and has many needed features, but we wished it provided full Windows 2000 support. We were aslo surprised to see Sony push the speed envelope higher without incorporating such technologies as Burn-proof into the firmware –so the CD writing experience is a little less complicated, especially for the beginners. At the time of this writing, the drive can be purchased online (from Sony) for about $279. That seems a bit steep when you compare it to the average net price of $180 for the older Spressa 10X4X24X drive –that has the exact same software package only performs just a little slower writing –yet much slower re-writing. But for $279 you’ll get a complete CD-RW suite, a one year warranty –and the ability to create any kind of CD you can imagine –in record times, just make sure you have a machine that can handle writing speeds that high because otherwise your forced to throttle down the burn speeds –thus having a slower CD-RW drive altogether and making the decision to upgrade wait a while.

Bij CG Channel kunnen we lezen dat nVidia door Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) is gekozen als leverancier van grafische chips voor SGI workstations. De Quadro2 MXR en Quadro2 Pro zullen worden gebruikt in de Silicon Graphics 230, 330 en 550 Visual Workstations. Duizenden Chello'ers in Noord-Holland kunnen al sinds maandag niet meer via de kabel het internet op. De Telegraaf schrijft dat het ook nog wel even kan duren voordat de storing is opgelost. UPC heeft namelijk geen idee wat het probleem veroorzaakt:

UPC is naarstig op zoek naar de oorzaak van de storing. Maar verder dan het vermoeden dat er waarschijnlijk iets mis is met de modems bij de klanten thuis, is men nog niet gekomen.

"We weten het ook niet waarom onze klanten niet meer kunnen internetten", was het wat wanhopig klinkende commentaar van een UPC-woordvoerder.

En dat terwijl de onderneming na een klachtenregen in oktober van boze klanten juist dinsdag nog plechtig verzekerde dat het aantal probleemgebieden voor het internetten via het bedrijf afneemt en dat de snelheid waarmee men kan 'surfen', aanmerkelijk is verbeterd.

Bij de Automatiseringsgids lees ik dat na een hoop andere bedrijven Microsoft nu dan ook een winstwaarschuwing heeft gegeven. De omzet zal in het laatste kwartaal van dit jaar namelijk 'maar' 6,4 à 6,5 miljard dollar bedragen, tegen een geplande 6,8 miljard. Volgens het bedrijf zijn de tegenvallende resultaten toe te rekenen aan de consument. Deze koopt steeds minder computers, maar toch is Microsoft nog positief:

Microsoft heeft zich aangesloten bij de stoet bedrijven die tegenvallende kwartaalcijfers verwachten. De omzet zal in de drie maanden tot eind december uitkomen op 6,4 à 6,5 miljard dollar. Tot dusver was op 6,8 miljard gerekend. De softwareproducent schrijft de tegenvaller toe aan de tragere groei van de economie.

Financieel directeur John Connors stelt vast dat de economische groei met name in de Verenigde Staten afneemt. Er gaan minder PC's over de toonbank. Vooral consumenten zijn huiveriger geworden voor zo'n grote aankoop.

De mannen van GamePC hebben een informatief stukje geschreven over verschillende snelle geheugenstandaarden. In het stukje wordt aandacht geschonken aan DDR, QDR en Rambus geheugen. Daarnaast wordt kort ingegaan op de verschillende front side bussen die gebruik van dit geheugen moeten maken. Quad Data Rate (QDR) is the obvious evolution from DDR, at least in terms of naming convention. RAM companies including Cypress Semiconductor, IDT and Micron has been actively pursuing QDR specifications along with JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council). JEDEC is the one that specifies naming conventions in order to help standardize electronics devices. These companies' current focus is on QDR SRAMs (Static RAM), and it appears that what is being called QDR, may really be more akin full-duplex DDR. Current data sheets from IDT, show that their QDR SRAMs are capable of simultaneously writing and reading data in a DDR manner.

These SRAMs (whose current primary purpose is for high-speed telecom switches) are capable of moving data in and out exactly like DDR. However, the I/O ports are completely independent of each other meaning, it can perform a write even while reading. This dual-ported architecture is quite different from current system RAM designs where read or write operations can take place, but not at the same time.

The biggest obstacle with integrating this style of memory architecture is creating the memory controller. Especially with an asynchronous I/O interface such as the one presented with these RAMs, the current approach of designing memory controllers would have to change. With many companies struggling to get DDR up and running and many other still optimizing their SDRAM-based designs, this may take a while.

Mister Freeze passde ons een linkje naar de site van duitse hardware shop K&M Elektronik, waar 128MB Apacer PC2100 DDR reepjes worden aangeboden voor een prijs van 489,99 DMark (250,53 euro). De reepjes hebben een CAS latency van 2 cycles en voldoen hiermee aan de 'DDR266A' specs. AMD leverde tijdens de introductie van de 760 chipset testsystemen met tragere CAS2,5 'DDR266B' DIMMs. We mogen daarom verwachten dat een 760 systeem met deze DIMMs nog betere prestaties neer kan zetten dan testmachines van AMD. Helaas blijft de prijs van DDR SDRAM voorlopig ver boven het beloofde prijs premium van 5%.
