One of the two biggest complaints I have about the drive was the DAE speed. The CRX160E's DAE is locked at 12x and had problems with quality in tough situations. The other was the software package. If you are going to pick up this drive make sure you save some money for a copy of Adaptec's Easy CD Creator or even better, Ahead's Nero Burning Rom. You will soon grow tired of the included software or find that it doesn't run on your operating system. I found that the drive is supported by almost all popular software packages out today.
In a nutshell Sony has a rock solid drive but it is not at the professional level. Like many of Sony's products that are marketed towards the mainstream, the CRX160E is meant for the every day user. Currently you can find a retail kit for around $170 on Pricewatch. If you are a casual CD-RW user that might occasionally back up personal data or create simpled audio CD's this drive is for you.Highs:
- Good CD-ROM performance.
- Easy to install - Very good instructions.
- Excellent software support - works great with CloneCD.
Lows:
- Poor DAE performance - locked at 12x CLV.
- Only features 8x high speed rewrite. Most competing drives are at 10x.
- Less than stellar software package.
