Techweb heeft een artikeltje gepost over de Linux boerderij die momenteel door de mannen & vrouwen van Google in elkaar getimmerd wordt. Dit supercluster bestaat uit maarliefst 4000 nodes, die elke Red Hat Linux draaien. Google meent al de kracht nodig te hebben vanwege de nogal heftige 'hypertext analyses' die zij op hun zoekmachientje loslaten:

Search engine Google has deployed 4,000 Linux servers, with plans to increase to 6,000 this year, making it possibly the largest Linux installation in the world.

Google said it turned to Red Hat (stock: RHAT) Linux primarily because of the cost. The OS itself costs nothing, compared with $500 to $900 per server for Windows servers.

De release van de i815 en i815E chipsets is volgens EBN Online 'uitgesteld' tot 19 juni. Schokwekkend nieuws kan ik dit niet noemen, aangezien de i815 bij mijn weten altijd al geprikt stond op een datum ergens eind juni. Ace's Hardware bracht vorige week al het nieuws dat het de 19de zou worden, die datum wordt nu dus door EBN bevestigd:

Intel Corp. has delayed the launch of its 815 or Solano chipset until June 19, according to sources close to the chip maker.

It is not yet clear whether the delay indicated a road map revision or a technical flaw with the chipset. Lately, Intel has delayed certain Xeon microprocessors to maximize yields and satisfy its OEM customer base.

Voor de specs van de i815 en i815E (met onboard LAN, ATA100 en USB2.0 dankzij nieuwe I/O Controller Hub) verwijs ik je naar de eerder genoemde nieuwsposting van vorige week.

The Register meldt dat ATi in een reactie op de Radeon prototype review van de CHIP Online heeft gezegd dat het door CHIP Online geteste exemplaar is gebaseerd op een zwaar verouderde sample, die via 'irregular channels' bemachtigd zou zijn:

"As ATI has not released any boards for testing, your testing was done on a board obtained through irregular channels," bleats ATI.

Chip replies that if ATI considers its own German branch to be an "irregular channel", they are confident their results are all right as they tested it in the presence of an ATI representative.

ATI further claims that the version tested was at least two versions behind the Radeon that will eventually ship.

Nederland mag dan boven het Europese gemiddelde zitten met het illegale software gebruik maar het kan nog veel erger: in Vietnam en China bestaat legale software bijna niet volgens de BSA, daar is 98 en resp. 91 procent van alle software illegaal :

Volgens die studie werd niet minder dan 98 pocent in Vietnam en 91 procent in China van alle gebruikte applicaties via illegale kanalen verworven. Ter vergelijking; in Nederland wordt volgens BSA voor 45 procent gebruik gemaakt van illegale software, in Europa ligt dat gemiddeld op 36 procent.

Toch is niet alles negatief voor Chinese softwareverkoopers, want in vergelijking met 1998 is dit een daling van gemiddeld vier procent. Ook in het naburige Hong Kong is de situatie lichtjes verbeterd. Twee jaar terug was 59 procent van de software in Hong Kong illegaal verkregen, nu is dat slechts 56 percent.

In absolute cijfers zou er echter geen sprake zijn van een terugval, maar wel van een verliestoename van 21,8 miljoen dollar. De situatie in Singapore is weinig verschillend: 51 procent van alle software is gepirateerd, goed voor een jaarlijks verlies van 61,8 miljoen dollar.

TweakMax maakt ons blij met een roundup van vier 7200rpm harde schijven, namelijk de Western Digital Expert 18GB, Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40, de IBM 75GXP 15GB en 2x Western Digital Expert 18GB in een Raid setup. De nieuwe 75GXP drive van IBM blijkt het snelste uit de test:

So what's the conclusion of these tests? Well, first of all we can see that the IBM is, hands down, the fastest drive we have tested. So if you want the fastest of the fastest, you know what to get . However, the Raid doesn't fall far behind and when we take price/performance into consideration the Raid setup seems like a more valuable solution. In my case I had one drive in my computer and the other in my girlfriends. What I did was that I bought a new DiamondMax Plus 40 for my girlfriend and put her Western digital (which was identical to mine) together with mine in a Raid. This way I got a lot of bang for the buck. Of course it all depends on what situation you are in, but the IBM is pretty expensive per MB. The Maxtor however is performing nice, especially in business mark, and is pretty cheap as well. What would be interesting to see now is what happens if we take two IBM 75GXP and put them in a Raid? Well, unfortunately you won't get the answer to that question in this review...

Evil3D.net heeft een preview online gezet van de VisionTek GeForce II uitgerust met 64 MB DDR geheugen. Deze 32 MB extra aan geheugen lijken in de benchmarks daar niet echt nuttig te zijn, maar als je dit artikel van Beyond3D leest kan je zien dat een groot probleem bij FSAA op de GeForce2 het gebrek aan geheugen is (bij 640x480 en max. quality FSAA heb je eigenlijk al te weinig), iets wat deze extra 32 MB in iedergeval tot een zekere hoogte oplost :

Occasionally, while using higher resolutions, a game like Quake 3 will appear to stutter when entering a new Potentially Visible Set [PVS] of a map. This type of stuttering can usually be attributed to texture swapping in the frame buffer. Adding an extra 32 MB will alleviate the problem in many instances, making game play smoother while using higher quality settings and resolutions.

To illustrate this point, let's take a look at the amount of video memory used by 3DMark. When setting the tests up for 1024x768, 6.1MB of memory is utilized for 16-bit textures and 11.5MB for 32-bit. The majority of today's cards can easily handle those loads. However, when testing at 1600x1200 15MB are required for 16-bit and a whopping 28.2MB for 32-bit. If you are working with only 32MB of card memory you can pretty much forget 1600x1200 as it would require the memory to be almost completely unloaded before the next PVS can be fully loaded and then displayed.

B-Force schrijft dat Anandtech een review heeft gemaakt van de Leadtek WinFast GeForce 2 GTS. Ze vinden de grote heatsink op deze kaart wel mooi, maar toch concluderen ze dat hij zinloos is: het overclocken van de core heeft al erg weinig effect bij de Geforce2 en daarnaast komt ook nog dat hij niet zoveel warmte produceerd dat het, het overclocken hindert:

Since the core temperatures of the GeForce 2 GTS are so much lower than those of the GeForce 256, we found in our Overclocking guide that heat is not the limiting factor in GeForce 2 GTS overclockablity. What this means is that rather than a card being able to overclock better or worse depending on its cooling method, almost all GeForce 2 GTS based cards will overclock almost identically no matter what type of heatsink and fan they use. Because heat is not an issue for the GeForce 2 GTS, the overly large heatsink does nothing more than add production cost and attract ill-informed consumers. This is shown by the card's ability to overclock to a 232 MHz core, right in the range that we have been able to overclock other GeForce 2 GTS based cards, regardless of cooling method. The one and only factor that effects overclockability in the GeForce 2 GTS is chip quality.

Webwereld meldt dat KPN de plannen voor flat-rate 'ISDN Always On' voorlopig in de koelkast zet. Voor inwoners van achterstandsgebieden, zoals ik hier in mijn prachtige Ruurlo, wordt het dus nog wat langer wachten op De Verlossing (MCI Worldcom help ons!). De reden die door KPN wordt geven voor het dumpen van de ISDN-Always plannen zijn overigens behoorlijk lame: 'wij verwachten er niet zoveel van':

"Mxstream is voorlopig onze enige flat rate aanbieding", zegt KPN-woordvoerder Michel Hueber. "Van ISDN Always On verwachten we niet zoveel, die plannen zijn in de wacht gezet."

ISDN Always On zou medio 2000 worden geïntroduceerd. De dienst werd in november vorig jaar door KPN-topman Paul Smits aangekondigd tijdens de presentatie van Mxstream, de ADSL-dienst van KPN.

De precieze opzet van de aanbieding is altijd in nevelen gehuld. KPN vertelde WebWereld wel dat het D-kanaal van de ISDN-aansluiting zou worden ingezet. Dat kanaal staat verbindingen toe met snelheden tot 16 Kbps, iets sneller dus dan een 14k4 modem.

Zo is al enige een tijd een gevecht over de vraag of de FSAA methode van nVidia hardwarematig of softwarematig is. NVIDIA has implemented an Ordered Grid Super-sampling (OGSS) Technique. This is a technique that can be implemented on almost all 3D accelerators, given that they support rendering to an off-screen buffer. An off-screen buffer has room to store the frame's pixel colors, as well as the Z and Stencil values. However, it differs from a conventional front- or back-buffer in that it is never displayed directly on screen.

The OGSS method uses a regularly-patterned ordered grid of sub-samples for each pixel. Sub-samples arranged in a column and row-like way around the original pixel are used to create what is in essence a more detailed collection of adjacent texture samples for the original pixel. Below, I provide a step-by-step account of how NVIDIA appears to use hardware-based OGSS anti-aliasing. Although some people call this a software implementation, this is incorrect. This specific technique uses existing "hardware" features to create an anti-aliased result, as we'll explain.

AMD Zone heeft een interview gepost met Sean Stanek, ontwikkelaar van de geoptimaliseerde Athlon RC5 core die over enkele dagen gereleased wordt. Met de huidige verbetering trekt deze client een circa 10 tot 15% hogere keyrate uit een Athlon. Met toekomstig geplande verbeteringen hoopt Sean de 3 integer units van de Athlon nog optimaler te benutten:

Q: What kind of performance increase can we expect from the new client?
A: From the soon-to-be-released distributed.net client, I only got about a 10%-15% increase in keyrate. After I implement the next two stages and get it working fine, expect much more keyrate increase OVER the soon-to-be-released client.

Q: Will you be working further to improve the optimizations?
A: Definitely. As I said before, I've already got two more stages planned. As it is, I'm getting two or less instructions executing per clock on the Athlon core, but the processor itself can execute three. The two stages I have planned should get more towards getting three instructions per clock cycle. Although one of my new ideas should help many x86 processors do a little better, Intel processors at the moment can only execute two instructions per clock as a maximum, whereas the Athlon can do three - so there's much room for improvement on the Athlon. In fact, most applications are so poorly written (i.e. by compilers) that they can't even get 1 instruction per clock cycle. I've heard as bad as 0.2 for some commercial products. Since the Athlon can physically do 3, there's a lot of things that could use optimization besides just RC5.

Jeff Lee van GamePC heeft een review geschreven van de zeer relaxte FE1250 22" vlakke monitor van NEC. Hier een gedeelte over zijn performance:

Using the monitor over a weeks time can be described with just three words, I want one. While running at that resolution we tried two different video cards to see if image quality was effected in terms of refresh rates and to our surprise it was. With one card maxing out at 60hz and the other at 70hz, the differences between the two were very noticeable. It just comes to show you that using a monitor such as this one has no point if your video card is incapable of delivering optimal refresh-rates at resolutions greater then 1600 x 1200.

There were times where the image needed a few adjustments, but performing these adjustments took virtually no time at all. The FE1250 takes advantage of a very easy to learn onscreen control via buttons on the front bezel. We also found a few new features in this monitor which are unique selections developed by NEC, those being AccuColor and GlobalSync. AccuColor allows for the user to fully adjust the red, green and blue guns to create what the user would consider a crisp and clear image, while GlobalSync eliminates picture impurities that my result from the earth’s magnetic field.
