Thresh's Firingsquad heeft een paar pagina's online gekieperd over de nieuwe engine van Epic die de Unreal engine moet opvolgen. Als we dit lezen wordt TnL in de toekomst zeker een must, ze vergelijken het hebben van TnL met het draaien van Quake II met software rendering of met een 3D kaart:

We mentioned earlier that LOD had to be used or the game would slow down because of the strain on CPUs. So how is Epic avoiding this issue? Are they praying that maybe processors will break Moore's Law and suddenly get a whole lot faster? No, they're actually relying on hardware transform and lighting on video cards to deliver the goods.

That's right, the much-maligned T&L is actually useful. It was said that games won't take advantage of T&L until they're built around it, and this is precisely what's happening. Patching and late-development work like what Quake3 offered gave only marginal performance increases. Unreal's terrain rendering technology is built bottom-up with T&L in mind. Epic is saying that at the moment they don't think it will be a requirement to run the games based on it, but just something you will want to have. The transition was compared to trying to play Quake II in software mode, then switching to 3D-accelerated.

Bij CDRInfo.com staat een review van de 40 speed Teac 540E cd-rom speler. De reviewer heeft het ding uitvoerig getest en kwam tot de conclusie dat de performance zeer goed is, (verslaat de UltraPlex meerdere malen). Helaas blijkt hij echter niet zo goed te werken met CloneCD:

The Teac 540E is a very good IDE CD-Rom drive. It performed very well with pressed and CD media in all of our tests. It had possibly the fastest reading speed when using RW media (30.38x average reading speed). The DAE reading speeds are very good for an IDE CD-ROM and managed to outperform even the Plextor 40x CD-Rom. In addition the drive seek time is very low (60ms) which is usefull when reading CDs with a lot of small files. The combination of performance, DAE speed and media compatibility combined with a very low price = killer combo! Additional Information:
The weakest point of the drive appears to be the disappointing CloneCD compatibility since it cannot read a protected CD (with lots of errors) very fast. CloneCD users will not be pleased about this, but again nothing is this life is perfect The Teac 540E is capable of reading MMC DAO RAW (CloneCD compatible) but as the CloneCD author posted: "..Setting read speed doesn't work and it is very slow skipping read errors.."

Nu.nl meldt in dit artikel dat Windows Millenium Edition zal worden verrijkt met een Philips teletekst-dienst waarme bezitters van een tv-kaart zonder extra hard- of software teletekstpagina's kunnen opvragen.

PC-gebruikers met een TV-ontvangstkaart kunnen met de technologie ook teletekstpagina's op hun scherm krijgen, zonder dat ze daarvoor extra soft- of hardware nodig hebben. Dankzij de Philips-technologie is de teletekstdecodering ingebed in het besturingssysteem.

De implementatie is gebaseerd op Microsofts Windows Driver Model, die geldt als de kern van Microsofts toekomstige besturingssystemen.

Philips gaat ervan uit dat de overeenkomst met Microsoft zal leiden tot extra vraag naar zijn chipsets voor digitale PC-videotoepassingen. PC-gebruikers hebben namelijk nog steeds een stand-alone tv-decoder nodig.

Planet Multimedia schrijft dat de beursgang van Chello, oorspronkelijk gepland voor komende woensdag, door UPC is uitgesteld tot 8 juni. Chello zegt nog een paar 'strategische besprekingen' af te moeten ronden:

De beursgang van UPC-dochter Chello is uitgesteld naar 8 juni. Chello gaat daarom niet aanstaande woensdag naar de beurs (AEX en Nasdaq). Reden daarvoor is dat het bedrijf 'strategische besprekingen' wil afronden met derden. Mocht er een overeenkomst komen dan moet het prospectus veranderd worden. De internetprovider van kabelbedrijf UPC wil met de beursgang 1,7 miljard gulden ophalen. Een aandeel zou tussen de 13 en 17 Euro kosten.

Jon Simon van Sharky Extreme vond het nodig om eens te gaan kijken bij het hoofdkwartier van Chaintech in Taiwan. In het verslag vind je naast wat info over het bedrijf en haar producten wat pics uit hun fabriek. Hier vast een stukkie:

We spoke with Chaintech about their current and future motherboard line. It seems that Chaintech is taking on the motherboard market on all fronts. They are building boards for reliability, performance and tweakability with broad feature sets, but all at a competitive price.

Chaintech ensures reliability through their AIRBAG2000 system and onboard IDE RAID.

AIRBAG2000 consists of (A) anti-virus software, (IR) instant recovery in BIOS, (B) BIOS protection, and (AG) an applications group. Their boards come bundled with two pieces of anti-virus software, Trend's PC-cillin and Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus. Instant recovery is a piece of software linked to Chaintech's BIOS that stores a backup of your software and OS in hidden directories on your hard disk. If something bad happens to your OS, it enables you to instantly recover with your programs intact. BIOS protection comes in multiple parts. First, the BIOS can be write protected. Second, certain Chaintech boards are available with twin BIOS chips, in case one gets corrupted. The applications group is a suite of software that, depending on the user, may or may not be useful. Of special note are X-STOP, a porn blocking application, and Shepherd2000, which lets you set hardware monitoring.

Ik lees bij Ace's Hardware dat c't de nieuwe Aladdin 7 chipset van Acer Labs heeft getest. De Aladdin 7 is een socket 7 chipset met geïntegreerde graphics controller van ArtX, echter zonder onboard cache support. Hierdoor verliezen de K6-2 en K6-III resp. hun L2 en L3 cache. Wel interessant is de 128-bit geheugen bus bij plaatsing van 2 DIMMs. Uit de benchmarks van c't blijkt dat dit een behoorlijk groot verschil maakt:

Overall zijn de prestaties van de Aladdin 7 erg triest. Uit bovenstaande resultaten wordt niet duidelijk of dit komt door het onbreken van L3 cache, of dat de prestaties van de ArtX graphics core gewoon extreem ruk zijn.

Iceman schrijft: "Op Webwereld kwam ik dit artikeltje tegen. Blijkbaar heeft KPN ernstige 'technische' bezwaren tegen flat-fee internet. KPN overweegt dan ook in beroep te gaan tegen een uitspraak van de OPTA, die KPN verplicht om MCI Worldcom een flat-free internet voorstel te doen":

KPN is door de toezichthouder verplicht concurrent MCI WorldCom een voorstel te doen voor flat flee internet. MCI WorldCom kan dan internetten en bellen tegen een vast bedrag aanbieden, de klant hoeft dan geen telefoontikken meer te betalen.

"Zo werk je in de hand dat eindgebruikers de verbinding altijd open laten staan, dat de telefoonlijn wordt gebruikt als huurlijn", reageert KPN-woordvoerder Michel Hueber. Hij voorspelt rampscenario's als MCI WorldCom daadwerkelijk toegang tegen een vast bedrag gaat aanbieden. "Dan ontstaat congestie in de lokale nummercentrales. Die worden dan voor normaal telefoonverkeer onbereikbaar. Ook 112 is dan niet meer bereikbaar."

KPN zegt dat er in het hun investeringsprogramma wordt gewerkt aan een uitbreiding van de nummercentrales. Flat-rate internet zou hierdoor in de toekomst mogelijk moeten worden. Meer daarover lees je bij Webwereld.

Chick's Hardware heeft een kort interview met Rendition online gezet. Rendition was destijds met de Vèritè 1000 naast 3dfx (Voodoo1) en nVidia (NV1, Diamond Edge3D) één van de pioniers op 3D acceleratie gebied. Uiteindelijk kwam 3dfx duidelijk als beste uit de eerste ronde naar voren, maar later had Rendition redelijk succes met de Vèritè 2x00. Deze werd onder andere door Diamond en Hercules gebruikt in de populaire Stealth II S220 en Terminator 3D.

In 1998 werd Rendition door Micron (yep, die DRAM gasten) overgenomen en sindsdien is het akelig stil gebleven. De veelbelovende V3x00 en V4x00 werden gecancelled, zonder dat er nieuwe produkten werden aangekondigd.

Uit het interview kunnen we opmaken dat Rendition op dit moment in een R&D fase zit, waarbij er hard gewerkt wordt aan de ontwikkeling van een oplossing met supersnel Embedded DRAM. Er zit gelukkig dus nog steeds leven in de tent. Wie weet levert 't iets heel moois op:

The acquisition was a great thing for Rendition. (no nice political statement here, just fact) It gave Rendition the opportunity to step out of the 3D technology iteration race and into an R&D phase. We believe the integration of our expertise in memory, graphics and core logic will eventually give Micron an unfair advantage in bandwidth no one in the industry will be able to match for years to come.

Uit een onderzoek van NPD Intelect is gebleken dat verkopen van 3Com/Palm handhelds in februari van dit jaar goed waren voor maar liefst 87,3% van de totale handheld markt. Dit is een toename van maar liefst 21,8% in vergelijking met 1999. Casio zag zijn aandeel in de handheld-pudding van 12,3 naar 4,3% in mekaar zakken:

The study shows that handhelds sold by Palm were responsible for 87.3 percent of handheld dollar sales in the retail channel during February of 2000. This is an increase of almost 22 percent compared to February, 1999, according to NPD Intelect.

Palm's led accelerated throughout 1999. A previous NPD Intelect study found it had garnered 84.9 percent dollar share in December.

Casio, the leading Windows CE vendor, saw the dollar share of its Windows CE devices plummet by more than 7 percent from February, 1999 to February 2000. Hewlett-Packard's dollar share dropped more than 3 percent, according to the study.

Het flat-rate ISDN abonnement van Wish is uitgesteld tot 'ergens deze zomer', meldt Webwereld. Aanvankelijk had Wish het plan om deze dienst begin mei te introduceren (thanx Aus voor de tip):

Volgens Bakkeren zijn er meerdere oorzaken voor de vertraging. Eén daarvan is de eigen telefooncentrale, waardoor ze een zelfstandige operator worden. Deze centrale moet volgens Wish eerst door KPN worden getest. "De uitvoering van deze test duurt wat langer dan verwacht.", zegt Bakkeren. Als het pakket operationeel is dan kan de klant via de carrierselect code 1630 het Wish-netwerk op.

Daarnaast heeft Wish haar marketing nog niet op orde. Bakkeren: "Hiervoor moet nog wat huiswerk worden verricht voordat we op de markt komen. We willen niet met een pakket komen waarvoor je eerst een heel boek moet doorspitten om er achter te komen wanneer je er gebruik van mag maken."

Als het flat-rate dienst van start gaat zullen bestaande Wish abonnees als eerste toegang krijgen.

Akiba's PC Watch heeft een paar nudies van de Asus CUR-DLS dual FC-PGA moederplank gepost. Dit bord met de Serverset III LE chipset van ServerWorks werd drie maand geleden ook al op de CeBIT geshowed, alleen waren de FC-PGA PIII's toen nog niet geschikt voor SMP. Inmiddels is dat wel het geval:

Dankzij een uitspraak van telecom toezichthouder OPTA in een geschil tussen KPN Telecom en MCI Worldcom, wordt flat-rate internet via het telefoonnet eindelijk mogelijk in Nederland. KPN wordt door OPTA verplicht om binnen enkele weken een aanbod te doen aan MCI voor twee nieuwe vormen van flat-fee en metered toegang tot het KPN netwerk. MCI koopt de belminuten tegen een op kosten gebaseerd tarief in bij KPN. De consument rekent af bij MCI:

De uitspraak leidt volgens Opta tot meer concurrentie en lagere prijzen. Internet is dan voor meer mensen toegankelijk. KPN moet binnen enkele weken een aanbod doen aan MCI voor twee nieuwe vormen van toegang tot het KPN-netwerk.

Het Amerikaanse telecombedrijf kan hierdoor nieuwe tarieven introduceren, die de internetter niet meer hoeft af te rekenen bij KPN, maar bij de concurrent MCI. De prijs per tik kan dan lager uitpakken dan die bij KPN. MCI kan ook internet aanbieden tegen een vaste prijs, dus zonder tikken.

Ace's Hardware heeft een transcriptie gepost van de presentaties die AMD en Micron op de DDR SDRAM Industry Summit hebben gegeven. Veel heftige nieuwe info komen we niet te weten, wel meldt Micron dat er inmiddels wordt gewerkt aan de opvolger van de PC2100 standaard. Deze nieuwe specificatie heet PC2600 en lijkt op een kloksnelheid van 166MHz te draaien:

Next year we plan on introducing an eighth generation core, currently called SledgeHammer. This will be x.86-64. This product will not only have the capability to execute 64 bit instructions, but will also be optimized to compete in the high end of the x.86-32 bit market as well. In order to see this high performance processor, we will be introducing an interconnect technology we call LDT, which is a very high speed I/O bus which will be useful in creating a pipe in into the core logic of the system to enable next generation I/O technologies like 1394-B gigabit ethernet as well as PCIX.

Here again we talk about SledgeHammer, our next generation, eighth generation core. Let's see how DDR fits into our platform strategy for 2000. When we introduce, in the second half of the year, DDR support, we will have chipsets from AMD, Via and ALi. The 760 chipset, which we are previewing today outside the door of this room, is a DDR technology demonstration of this product which we intend to launch in the second half of this year. Most significantly it supports the DDR standard PC2100 and 1600. In the midrange space we will also be, as we work with our third party chipset vendors, introducing DMA, or sometimes known as SMA chipsets supporting PC133 and PC100. And just give a few more points on feature set of the AMD 760 chipset, we'll also have a version called the 760MP, supporting 1 and 2 processors. It will support up to four DIMMs, unbuffered and buffered DIMMS, a next generation ATA interface for disk drives. These are the enhancing features of these chipsets.

On the DIMM side, we've got a little bit different nomenclature than what we've used in the past. We still use PC, but we use 2100 and 1600. So 2100, 1600, and we have three module types, which our other presenters have talked about in some detail already. We have the 184 pin larger DIMM, registered and unbuffered. And we have the new 200 pin SO-DIMM development going on as well. And we're working on the initial rounds of common Gerber development on the unbuffered SO-DIMM.

We're also in the initial stages of looking at trying to move this technology one more speed grade beyond PC2100. Initial work is getting started, as Eric alluded to in his presentation, in developing platform technology for PC2600. And there is a few things going on in that area right now. That will be a matter of development for the second half of this year, first part of next year. See what we can do to squeeze another speed rate out of DDR as we did with 100 as we went to 133. Probably look at doing a little package technology and system constraints to keep the loading down and clock speeds up to 167 and a 333 megahertz data rate. So in conclusion, I think it's probably evident by now that we're, from a DRAM supply side we're ready to ramp this product and we're waiting for the chipsets to come along.

Bij UpsideToday is te lezen dat Transmeta een grote OEM-deal heeft binnengesleept. Gateway en AOL hebben aangekondigd de Transmeta processoren (waarschijnlijk Crusoe) te gaan gebruiken in een draadloze WebPad. Het systeem gaat op een Linux OS draaien. Over het niet gebruiken van Intel-processoren en Windows heeft Gateway het volgende te zeggen:

The two companies are breaking ranks with the powerful "Wintel duopoly" comprising Intel Corp's (INTC.O) hardware and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) software, the newspaper said.

The decision was a coup for Transmeta Corp, a chip design company based in Santa Clara, California which has developed a microprocessor intended to be a low-power and inexpensive alternative to Intel's microprocessors, the New York Times said.

Gateway executives said on Friday they decided to break with Intel and Microsoft because the new devices were not personal computers, according to the paper.

"We're not building a personal computer, we're building an appliance," the paper quoted Peter Ashkin, Gateway's senior vice president and chief technology officer, as saying. "Hence, there was no strong requirement for Windows."

Maximum PC heeft een leuk artikeltje gepost over een Pixar werknemer, die reageert op de performance claims die nVidia eerder in een press release op Silicon Investor deed. nVidia opperhoofd Jen-Hsun Huang claimt in dit persbericht dat de GeForce2 GTS een 'major step' is richting het bereiken van 'realtime Pixar-level animation'. Volgens Tom Duff van Pixar is dat crap en is de GeForce2 absoluut niet in staat om de prestaties van een UltraSparc renderfarm te evenaren:

In response, Tom Duff from Pixar responded, "Do you really believe that their toy is a million times faster than one of the CPUs on our UltraSparc server?"

Duff then goes on about the throughput of the AGP bus in a typical PC, by asking, "Don't forget that the scene descriptions of (Toy Story2) frames average between 500MB and 1GB. The data rate required to read the data in real time is at least 96Gb/sec. Think your AGP port can do that?"

The Pixar employee then points out the time constraints of the ludicrous statements the marketing team at nVidia by saying in 10 to 15 years, nVidia may have Pixar-level animation in real-time, but not in this day and age.

While this doesn't mean nVidia engineers are ignorant of what goes on in the rendering world, it does point fingers at the marketing teams of the graphics world and how ignorant they must think users really are. This smells like Apple marketing schemes.

Ik lees bij AMD Zone dat Distributed.net volgende week nieuwe RC5 clients met Athlon-optimized core uitbrengt. Deze koeien grazen op een Athlon circa 10% harder dan de huidige clients:

As I understood, the clients that will be released this/next week will have Athlon optimized cores. If not, complain again, and say Ivo was wrong....

De statsruns van vandaag zijn trouwens iets vertraagd, waardoor het wat langer duurt voordat de stats van gisteren beschikbaar zijn.

Nog voor het verstrijken van de NDA heeft de Koreaanse site K-Bench een review van de AMD Thunderbird online gemikt. De benchmark resultaten vallen mij zwaar tegen: de Thunderbird is nauwelijks sneller dan Athlon Classic en het verschil met de Duron (niet in deze benchmarks genoemd) lijkt ook erg klein te zijn. De tekst is overigens nogal onleesbaar, maar de benchmarks grafiekjes doen het prima :

CHIP Online heeft een preview geschreven aan de hand van een prototype van de ATi Radeon. Ze hebben jammer genoeg de keiharde FPS resultaten niet in een tabelletje of grafiekje gemikt maar als je de tekst leest wordt het duidelijk dat de kaart nu de GeForce2 en Voodoo5 5500 alleen in zeldzame gevallen verslaat, toch aardig goed voor een undergeclockte kaart met extreme beta drivers :

The core ran at 176 MHz, so the synchronously running DDR-RAM effectively hit 352 MHz. So 5,5-ns-RAM was enough for this prototype – in our case by Korean chipmaker Hyundai. The final version is planned to run at 200 MHz – if DDR-RAM at 400 MHz becomes available in time.

[...] The drivers were in early beta, so we witnessed clipping errors from time to time and a few „unexpected exits“ – which, of course, is quite a normal thing to happen at such an early state of development. We would like to point out here that the 3D performance of the retail version is highly likely to improve significantly with then mature drivers. We still think that the results can give a rough impression of what to expect, though.

[...] Especially at 32 bit color depth in high resolutions the Radeon protoype showed very strong muscles – although none of the games we tested were optimized for ATIs special features (like the „Charisma engine"). Unfortunately time didn't allow us to test on a Pentium-III-platform, but it seems sensible to guess that the Radeon would have scored even higher results on an Intel-based machine since often ISSE is better implemented into graphics card drivers than 3DNow!, those from ATI included.

Je zou bijna denken dat ze bij Tom's Hardware Guide als doel hebben om Rambus persoonlijk de afgrond in te jagen: Ze hebben weer eens een artikel (25 pagina's) over alle nadelen en voordelen van RDRAM. En zoals te verwachten vinden ze RDRAM helemaal niks: 'overpriced, under-performing, buggy technology':

Our low-level test results clearly show significant problems with RDRAM performance and give clear indications of why RDRAM systems perform so poorly on application level benchmarks. Significantly, even RDRAM's strengths are in fact weaknesses as it performed worse than SDRAM in both our bandwidth tests (save for the floating point bandwidth test where the L2 cache was disabled - an undesirable condition at best) and the multithreaded ThreadSort. Given RDRAM's resoundingly poor performance on our low-level benchmarks, it is difficult to imagine very many applications that will not suffer from using RDRAM.

[...] As much as we hate to say it, it looks like Rambus itself has dug RDRAM's grave. This overpriced, under-performing, buggy technology (as evidenced by Intel's manifold problems launching platforms to support it) bullied onto buyers and consumers alike, looks like dead meat. If there is a sad note to this dirge it is that no one but Rambus is likely to attend the funeral -- Intel appears that it may be trying to remove this tetanus laden poodle from its ankle before the chip titan gets pulled into the hole along with it.
