A high-performance version of Advanced Micro Device's Athlon processor dubbed Thunderbird will make its debut Monday, according to sources close to the company.

The Thunderbird is essentially an enhanced version of the Athlon, a line of processors that has been credited with turning the company's fortunes around. Its release is expected to spark a new round of competitive battles with Intel.

To be incorporated into high-end consumer systems and business desktops, Thunderbird will run at speeds ranging from 750-MHz to 1-GHz and higher, according to sources.

AMD also will formally open its fabrication facility in Dresden, Germany on Monday.

In conclusion, the Cheetah X15 is a groundbreaking product that allows industry-giant Seagate to show the market who's truly in charge. The drive will deliver performance that's light-years ahead of the competition. We have only two small caveats. The first is the high-pitch idle whine that the drive exhibits. Since the drive is targeted towards servers that won't have individual users sitting close to the drive, however, this is a minor weakness at worst. Our second is with the drive's 18 gig capacity. There may be those that desire the X15's blazing speed with state of the art capacities… unfortunately, no mix of the two will be available. Complaints aside, the X15 is the drive to get for those who can live with a max of 18 gigs of storage on one drive who need the utmost in speed. There's no other drive like it.

Overclockers Australia heeft een review klaar van de Acer F51 15" LCD monitor. Uiteraard zijn LCD monitoren erg stoer maar vanwege onderstaande nadelen en natuurlijk de hoge prijs zal de gemiddelde tweaker niet snel zo'n ding op zijn desk planten.

There are some drawbacks to this type of display, however. Firstly is that they look best from straight ahead. Anyone who's owned an old laptop can tell you how moving your head a few inches in any direction from dead-centre will make the colours fade, the brightness dip and the text hard to read on an LCD screen. This effect is present on this monitor too - not incredibly badly, but it's noticeable. This would be irritating to a hardcore graphics professional. In fact, in my last few reviews, I found myself having to compensate for the brightness of the monitor when editing images. If I made them appear ok on the LCD, they would be incredibly dark on the CRT (and, presumably, reader systems as well). I did try to use Photoshop's monitor calibration, I fiddled with the various settings on the monitor, but I couldn't make it acceptable. Maybe a hardcore graphics professional knows a solution to this, but I couldn't find it.

The sharpness of the monitor at it's native resolution is also very impressive, text and window edges etc are very clearly defined. Native resolution? Ahh, another LCD peculiarity. Basically, this LCD monitor is designed around 1024x768. In fact, it quite literally has 1024x768 physical pixels on it, so no matter what resolution signal you send to it, it will display 1024x768. This means that if your video card is set up to display 800x600, the monitor scales it up and you lose a little definition - it's not quite as sharp. You cannot display higher than 1024x768 - I can't imagine you wanting to on a 15" monitor anyway. It quite happily accepts a range of resolutions from 640x350 up, and a range of refresh rates up to 75Hz in all resolutions. 75Hz is enough for anyone, but when it comes to actually drawing the image on the screen, the input refresh rate becomes irrelevant next to the physical time it takes for each pixel to refresh. In fact, I'd say the pixel refresh rate was quite low indeed on this unit, running a Q3 timedemo or even just playing a fast-paced game leaves a faint ghostly trail behind any moving object - in the case of a first-person shooter, the whole screen is often moving so it becomes quite hard to see small objects accurately. If you're a hardcore railgun freak in Q3, your accuracy will go out the window. This was perhaps the most dissapointing aspect for me, and the reason this unit was moved off the games box.

C|NET Gamecenter heeft een review online gekicked van de 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP, (final version). Zoals uit eerdere reviews bleek is de performance vaak niet veel beter dan de van de al 6 maanden oude GeForce DDR. Om die reden kan de reviewer je de Voodoo5 5500 niet echt aanraden behalve als je FSAA héél erg belangrijk vindt. Hier wat gedeeltes:

Last year, we were worried about the Voodoo3's longevity. Its lack of 32-bit-color rendering and its low-resolution texture support will hurt its longevity, we thought. We were right: dozens of games are using 32-bit color and high-res textures, and Voodoo3 owners are either complaining or looking for an upgrade. We're similarly worried about the new Voodoo5 5500's long-term outlook: its lack of T&L support and the lukewarm response from game developers to its biggest feature, the mighty T-buffer, has us wondering if this otherwise decent card will be a liability at this time next year.

[...] In raw performance benchmarks, the Voodoo5 5500 proved to be a competent Direct3D board, although the numbers paled in comparison to GeForce2 GTS benchmarks. The Voodoo5 5500 is actually more competitive with the GeForce 256 DDR, which it trounced in nearly every D3D benchmark we ran. It wasn't quite as consistent as an OpenGL performer, but its Quake III Arena numbers were still respectable.

Here's where the longevity question arises, however: We know our benchmarks consist of established games, and that all of the cards in the performance chart run them reasonably well. Think of the future, however, and know that it's likely that the card that runs current games the fastest will deal best with games that push the envelope, adding more polygons, more detailed textures, and more features. The fastest card today will probably outlast the others, and the Voodoo5 5500 is not the fastest card.

Gamers Depot heeft als tweede een preview geschreven over de GeForce2 64MB. De performance verschillen zijn niet echt groot vergeleken met de 32 MB versie, alleen met de MDK 2 demo op 1600x1200 @ 32 bit is er een flink verschil: 27 FPS vs. 18 FPS . Hun conclusie is dan ook dat je deze kaart, die ongeveer 100 dollar duurder gaat worden dan zijn kleine broertje, beter niet kan kopen tenzij je genoeg (te veel) geld hebt:

We should start seeing retail cards with 64MB of memory hitting in June, and have a price tag of about $75.00 - $100.00 more than their 32MB cousins. With prices already around $350.00 for the 32MB cards, this will put the 64MB version out of reach for most. BXBoards heeft een review gepost van de vroege Abit SE6 sample die zij in handen wisten te krijgen. Dit nieuwe plankje met de binnenkort te introduceren i815 chipset heeft een redelijk relaxte layout met 6 PCI sleufjes en 3 DIMM slots. Verder is het bord in goede Abit traditie weer van de nodige overclocking settings voorzien. Wat betreft performance brengt de review helaas minder positief nieuws over de SE6 en de i815 chipset. De geheugen performance blijkt extreem triest te zijn, in vergelijking met de goede oude 440BX soms meer dan de helft lager .

*Update* BXBoards heeft nieuwe benchmark resultaten toegevoegd met de In Order Depth Queue setting op 4. Hierdoor ziet de memory performance er aanmerkelijk vrolijker uit:

This is a disappointing product through no fault at all of Abit. The Solano chipset has been generating a lot of interest and for those of you waiting for an Intel based upgrade path from BX, then I'm afraid to report that the performance of i815 is not even in the same ball park. I must state again that this review is based on an early board, with an Intel "Secret" chipset. However although I expect late changes to the SouthBridge of Solano, I can't see any massive increases in performance at this late stage.

Abit have held up their end of the bargain, with all the support for the overclocked you'd expect. The product is commendably stable, and we took our P3-866 up to 1 Gigahertz with ease, something we've not managed to do on many boards. Its a great overclocking board, with all the overclocked stability expected of Abit.

Layer management under Photoshop 6 has been greatly improved and will make any avid user feel warm and fuzzy inside. For starters, Adobe has removed the 99 layer limit, now allowing users to add hundreds of layers, and has introduced 'Layer sets.' Layers can now also be locked or color-coded. Furthermore, users can now delete linked layers from the Layers palette trash icon and add layer effects between layers via drag-and-drop.

Continuing on with Photoshop layers, the new version will sport Layer Styles with new compositing and effects capabilities. Some of these advancements include the addition of a Styles palette with thumbnails (and various views), a new Overlay layer effect, a new Stroke layer effect, Knockout blending, channel-restricted blending, separate fill opacity controls, and a “Blend as group” option.

Layers can now also obscure their effects, for example, a layer's drop shadow will not show through a semitransparent layer. All shadow and glow effects can now have a noise value, and glows now can be single-color or multicolor, using a gradient. Spread and Choke controls will also be available for shadows and glows.

Micron is the first DRAM manufacturer to meet the Intel 133MHz SDRAM device specification target goal of 2-2-2. The 2-2-2 reference refers to the following timing specifications, in clock cycles: CAS latency (CL), which is the time from read command to data out; RAS to CAS delay (tRCD), which is the time from the active command to the read command; and the RAS precharge (tRP), which is the time from precharge command to active command. 133MHz SDRAM parts meeting the 2-2-2 specification provide data faster than parts meeting the 3-3-3 specification, which is the slowest option supported by the Intel 133MHz SDRAM device specification.

The Techzone heeft een review van de Hercules 3D Prophet II. Het overclocken van deze kaart ging niet erg goed, 219 / 360 Mhz was de maximale snelheid die gehaald kon worden:

Seeing how well the Elsa Gladiac overclocked, I was really looking forward to overclocking the 3D Prophet II GTS. With what appears to be a better heatsink fan on the GTS chip and heatsinks on the RAM, I thought for sure it'll be able to overclock higher than the Elsa Gladiac.
What I got was a big disappointment. The 3D Prophet II locked up on me if I tried to run the core higher than 219Mhz. If the memory was pushed higher than 360Mhz, ugly artifacts start appearing on Quake 3. After a few minutes the game would lock up, requiring a hard reboot.[break] Tweak3D heeft ook een review gemaakt van deze kaart. It's a perfectly decent performer if you use the leaked drivers, it's not much worse with its stock drivers, it's stable and well made, and it's not painfully expensive. Betanews meldt dat Adobe vorige week de eerste beta's van Photoshop 6.0 de deur uit heeft gedaan. Versie 6 belooft vooral voor web designers een aantal interessante nieuwe features, zoals volautomatisch gegenereerde HTML code:

Afgaande op de reakties lijkt het erop dat de Athlon - afgezien van de welbekende power supply, GeForce+Irongate en exemplarisch-brakke-mobo problemen - redelijk probleemloos werkt onder Linux. LhD heeft een overzicht met Athlon moederplanken samengesteld, waarop je je rating los kunt laten:

Are Linux users actually experiencing problems with Athlon motherboards? 3dfx heeft bekend gemaakt dat de leveringen van Voodoo5 5500 videoplanken worden hervat. Vorige week werden uit voorzorg alle tot dan toe geleverde V5-5500's teruggeroepen vanwege 'field failure rates' (kaarten die in bepaalde configuraties aan het muiten slaan). Afgelopen zaterdag liet 3dfx al weten dat zij erin waren geslaagd om het probleem te isoleren. Nu de oorzaak+fix is gevonden, kunnen resellers de kaart vanaf 9 juni eindelijk in voorraad hebben:

MacOS Rumors bericht dat het nog minimaal tot september gaat duren alvorens er nieuwe Macs met de verse UMA-2 chipset op de markt komen. Eind dit jaar wordt tevens de langverwachte PowerPC G4e processor gereleased. De G4e heeft 256KB on-die L2 cache, een langere pipeline en meer executions units. De kloksnelheid bedraagt 733MHz bij introductie:

Until Macworld New York in late July, Rumors' body of evidence strongly suggests there will be no major hardware announcements. There is still room for surprises at New York, but widespread word at WWDC earlier this month was that the full-blown MP G4 -- believed to be one of the first Macs to be based on the new, simpler Unified Motherboard Architecture mark II (UMA-2) chipset -- won't be seen until at least September. The cause is reportedly in part the delayed second-generation G4 code-name "V'Ger" -- and often referred to as the G4e -- as well as availability of high-performance 133MHz DDR SDRAM memory.

Until confirmable evidence speaks to the contrary, the next two months' changes in the G4 arena will likely be limited to modest speed and specification bumps. Nothing beyond 600MHz single CPUs is likely. The real spice gets tossed in later this year when the UMA-2 G4 really begins to flex the processing platform's muscles with speeds up to 733MHz immediately, up to four processors with a total of 1MB of shared full-speed (1:1) backside cache and numerous new units added along with an improved on-chip memory bus.

On top of UMA-2's impressive new performance and simplicity features (133MHz DDR SDRAM, 4X/266MHz AGP graphics bus, four USB ports on two independent channels, et al), this should put Apple in a good position if Motorola and IBM can execute the strategic plays they're staging presently without the severe "slide" of the past year.

Vrieskist schrijft dat The Tech Report report een klein experimentje heeft gedaan. Ze hebben de snelheid van een athlon op 702 MHz en een FSB van 108 vergeleken met een Athlon op 728 MHz en een FSB van 104 MHz. De hogere busspeed blijkt belangrijker te zijn om de performance te verhogen dan wat extra MHz uit je Athlon te persen (open deur):

The first thing you'll notice here is that we're not talking about monstrous differences. Nonetheless, there are some significant gains to be made. The most important comparison, in my opinion, is between the 700/100 score and the 702/108 score. The higher bus speed manages a gain of 3.5% on demo001 and 3% on demo002, despite nearly identical CPU speeds. Not bad for 5 minutes messing with your GF card and BIOS.

The next thing to look at is how far we have to push the bus speed on the 7.0 multiplier before it surpasses the 6.5/108 combination. The 702/108 combo somewhat surprisingly pulls out a victory over the 728/104 combo. If you're one of those people who set the GFD's multiplier as high as the CPU would go, then pumped the bus speed up a few notches to really push the limits, take note here. You could very well be better off backing that multiplier off a notch and cranking the bus speed as high as it will go.

Finally, examining the scores from 700/100 through 756/108 is interesting, since it shows the overall effect the higher bus speeds have on performance. The results tend toward diminishing returns; the jump from 103 to 104 on demo002, for example, gives a .83 frame increase, while the jump from 107 to 108 only yields a .3 frame increase.
