Pregnant pop star Madonna has found herself in the midst of a Net piracy wrangle after an unreleased single was leaked on the Web.

The single, to be Madonna's next single and the title track of her new album, Music, was due for a September or October release. But the song was apparently stolen, and large chunks can now be found via Napster software or on several fan sites.

Madonna, her manager and record label, Warner, are all said to be fuming, and threats against sites found offering the download were flying around yesterday.

In a statement, Warner warned: "Warner Bros regards the copyright infringement of its artists' recordings, including the unauthorised use of such recordings on Internet sites, as an extremely serious matter.

Police are investigating a bomb attack in the early hours of this morning on Microsoft's office in South Africa.

The "unidentified device" went off at 4.55am this morning in the courtyard next to the Microsoft canteen in the Johannesburg building. Only four security staff were on site at the time and no-one was injured, ITWeb reported.

Damage was restricted to shattered windows and wrecked tables and chairs.

Details of the attack are still sketchy. Police Inspector Willem de Villiers told IT Web: "Forensic analysts and the bomb disposal unit are combing the scene for evidence. At this time we cannot speculate on the motive or the device used to cause the explosion."

Ace's Hardware meldt dat er bij de Micro Star MSI-6191 entry in AMD's goedgekeurde Slot A planken lijst wordt gesuggereerd dat deze compatible is met de Thunderbird. De T-bird wordt schijnbaar gekenmerkt met het 'A' voorvoegsel. Hieronder meer info:

Storage Review vond het nodig om 5 IDE CD-ROM spelers te gaan testen, o.a. van Creative Labs, Kenwood en Mitsumi. De Kenwood 72x bleek met gemak alle testen te winnen, behalve dan de CD-RW proef. Het ding was niet in staat om herschrijfbare schijfjes te lezen zoals CDRInfo dat eerder ook al opmerkte. Als alternatief hiervoor bleek de Creative Labs 52x interessant:

Although Kenwood's highly touted 72X unit failed our CD-RW compatibility test, that was about the only weakness we could find. On the other hand, it trounced the competition in the disc and file copy tests as well as the DAE tests, and kept up admirably in the heavily access time-weighted CD-ROM Winmark despite clocking in over 33ms slower than the 48X Toshiba, our current access time leader. For those who may shy away from the Kenwood's relatively high sticker price (or the CD-RW issues), Creative's 52X unit does deserve an honorable mention. Very speedy in its own right, the CD5230E gives up quite a bit to the Kenwood in DAE speed and noise levels, but nearly makes up for it in CD-RW compatibility and read performance. While the Kenwood has the better "traditional" CD-ROM performance, Creative gets the nod as the more well-rounded performer. A final mention should go to the Delta unit for its bang-for-buck prominence. Barely-acceptable DAE and CD-RW performance kept it out of contention, but for those whose needs do not lie there, the Delta is a steal at only forty bucks.

LoCaL stuurde een link op naar deze Thunderbird 700 benchmarks van de Duitse c't die laten zien dat de T-bird 700 iets betere presteert dan een gelijk geklokte Pentium III. Het verschil met een Athlon classic is echter nog steeds niet denderend te noemen, een winst van ongeveer 5% in Quake III en SysMark 2000.

AMDs new processor Thunderbird is superior and also still lower-priced to the Pentium III with same clock in far sections. In the c't laboratory a Vorabversion, which operated with 700MHz, could already demonstrate once it's efficiency. The Thunderbird has both under Windows 98, under Windows 2000 and under Linux the nose in front. Only at particularly Pentium III optimized software the the Intel competitor could maintain ground.

How already reported , AMD wants to present the new Athlon Prozessorgeneration on coming Monday for the initialization of the Computex in Taiwan officially. One expects versions from 700 mc/s to 1 GHz. However the signs compress themselves that AMD wants to show also a 1,1-GHz-Version. Besides one will be able to see also well cooled over-clocked versions, approximately from the Kryotech. VIA on the own Computex Website the demonstration of a 1,4-GHz-Systems, this had time-long already announced however had in the meantime again removed.

Bij Thresh's FiringSquad staat een interessant artikel waarin gekeken wordt wat een Quaker beter met z'n studiefinanciering kan doen: een nieuwe videokaart met een hogere fillrate of een snellere processor kopen. De gevolgen van beide opties werd onderzocht door middel van een Celeron 450 en een P3-700 Quake III scores uit te laten poepen met een TNT2, GeForce DDR en GeForce2. Hier een hap uit de conlcusie voor je:

If you play 3D games, be they Quake, UT, Homeworld or NFS5, the choice becomes tougher. You have to decide between pretty graphics and good framerates. These are almost always mutually exclusive. A new CPU will provide you good framerates at low resolutions even with an old video card (up to a point, that is).

A new video card will let you run at higher resolutions, but you might not have the framerate to make those resolutions playable. Worse, in many games such as Quake 3, there are “pretty” options, which are more stressful on a CPU than a video card (marks on walls comes to mind).

If you already have a decent CPU and you like playing at high resoltions, you might be better off with a new video card. The Celeron 450 in our benchmarks was able to hang in there with the P3/700 in the high-resolution, high quality tests because the video card is the bottleneck at those settings.

In general though, if you prefer pretty graphics and want that new video card, you have to make sure that your processor is fast enough to handle it. You don’t want to sink $350 into a new GeForce 2 card and discover that it isn’t any faster than your TNT2 because your Celeron 300 is the bottleneck.

Het Koreaanse Samsung heeft een agressief plan opgezet om de productie van LCD-schermen sterk op te voeren. Er heerst een zekere schaarste op de markt voor platte beeldschermen en door een verhoogde productie hoopt men de nood enigszins te kunnen lenigen.

Over het hele jaar zullen er zo'n 6 miljoen platte schermen worden vervaardigd. Deze zijn goed voor een waarde van 2,8 miljard dollar. De cijfers hebben betrekking op actieve matrix-schermen, waarbij ieder beeldpunt is voorzien van een eigen groepje van drie stuurtransistoren.

De wereldproductie van dergelijke schermen zal dit jaar uitgroeien tot een volume van 30 miljoen stuks, zo menen de marktonderzoeksbureaus. Samsung rekent op een verdere groei van de markt, aangewakkerd door de vraag naar platte TV-toestellen en groot formaat monitoren met een geringe inbouwdiepte

[update] From the feedback I have been getting the 4 in 1 drivers can cause a registry error for Windows 98, and possibly Windows 95. I have received 3 reports of this happening. I'm not quite sure what these cases have in common other than they were all using Windows 98. I did not have this problem in 98, but I have not tried 98SE. I also did not have a problem in Windows 2000. This is just further warning that they could hose your registry, so use them with caution in 9x.

Een aantal Casema slachtoffers, waaronder John Gotti, lieten ons weten dat Casema internet in de regio Den Haag en Haaglanden is getroffen door een heftige downtime:

"Donderdag om 14:47 viel mij op dat mijn internetverbinding ineens heel traag werd. Om 15:00 kreeg ik geen site meer op het scherm. Helpdesk gebeld en ja hoor: 'Er is een storing in de regio Den Haag en Haaglanden". Nu, vrijdag 09:19 krijg ik nog steeds geen verbinding. Volgens Casema zijn ze waarschijnlijk het slachtoffer van een hack aanval':

"Ongeveer 20.000 gebruikers van Kabel Wannadoo kunnen door een storing bij Casema geen gebruik maken van hun internetverbinding. Casema weet niet precies wanneer de storing weer verholpen is. Dat kan binnen een paar uur zijn, maar het kan ook nog een dag duren. De storing kan veroorzaakt zijn door een fout in de hardware, maar Casema acht het waarschijnlijker dat het om een gerichte aanval van hackers gaat." • Nauwelijks of geen data verkeer

We onderzoeken op dit moment de oorzaak van deze storing, en hopen deze storing zo spoedig mogelijk te verhelpen.

Yahoo News heeft een erg interessant artikeltje gepost over het management en de strategiën bij nVidia en 3dfx. nVidia wordt in dit artikel geprezen voor z'n strakke organisatie, die het in staat stelt om elke 6 maanden een nieuwe generatie 3D chips op de markt te planten. Bij 3dfx loopt 't volgens Yahoo beduidend minder smooth, door herhaaldelijke delays en het ontbreken van een heldere visie. Of je het hier nou mee eens bent of niet, feit is dat nVidia het wat betreft financiële resultaten beduidend beter doet dan 3dfx:

What makes these two neighbors a good case study is that last year at this time, they were on just about equal footing in the market for powerful 3-D chips--the technology responsible for the explosions, car wrecks and machine-gun fire in your kid's PC video games. Shares of both companies were trading at $20, and it was anybody's guess which company would prevail. But 3dfx dropped the ball, enduring major delays in bringing new versions of its Voodoo chips to market, while Nvidia chugged merrily along with TNT and GeForce chips that not only came out on time but garnered rave reviews from the gaming press.

As a result, Nvidia is the hottest graphics company going, while 3dfx is struggling to prevent itself from becoming an also-ran. Today, Nvidia's stock is trading at $109.88, while 3dfx is languishing at $6.69. Van Simbaman kreeg in via ICQ een heel aardige tip. Al tijden nl draai ik Win2000, maar ik heb me er altijd aan kapot geërgerd dat ik de Accessebility Options niet uit kon zetten. Het storende ervan is dat je tijden het spel het risico loopt dat ie plotseling 5x achter elkaar een CTRL aanslag registreert. en dat is één van de hotkey's om een accessebility functie te activeren. Super irritant.

Hoe dus weg te krijgen?

Ga naar C:\WINNT\inf (of het path wat in jouw geval opgaat als je Win2k elders hebt geinstalleerd) en zoek naar het bestandje sysoc.inf in dit bestandje haal je alle argumenten "HIDE," weg (vergeet niet de "," er bij te zetten!) Het makkelijkste is dit te doen toor een Search/Replace met notepad.

Over de specs van deze Athlon chipset is eigenlijk nog vrijwel niets bekend (behalve dat-ie ondersteuning heeft voor DDR SDRAM - duh). Enkele weken geleden werd al wel gespeculeerd dat ALi mogelijk de nieuwe chipset partner van AMD wordt, nu VIA zich door het geblunder van Intel vooral op de P6 markt richt.

BX chipset dood? Nee, nog niet echt: Anandtech heeft een roundup gemaakt van 7 plankjes uitgerust met de BX chipset en die allemaal op een FSB van 133 MHz draaien. De twee plankjes die een stuk beter zijn dan de rest zijn volgens Anand de Asus CUBX en Microstar BXMaster, de ene is het beste Socket-370 plankje en de andere is de keus als een Slot-1 plankje wilt hebben :

This is quite unusual for a Slot-1 chipset since the first two chipsets for the Pentium II never lasted more than a few months. Deze geluidskaart, die waarschijnlijk binnen een maand in de winkel komt, heeft leuke specs: ondersteuning voor EAX en A3D (jammer genoeg geen A3D 2.0). De goede kwaliteit van de EAX en A3D effecten en een adviesprijs van 159 gulden maken dit kaartje zeker interessant voor de gamende tweakers :

De huidige hardware wereld plaatst ons voor vele dilemma’s: ‘Intel of AMD?’, ‘3dfx of nVidia?’, ‘CD of DVD?’ en ook ‘A3D of EAX?’.
