EBN Online meldt in dit nieuwsbericht dat VIA Technologies in het tweede kwartaal een apart bedrijf wil oprichten voor haar eigen processor lijn. Het grootste gedeelte van de afzet zal naar de Chinese markt gaan waar VIA op het moment erg actief is. De aangekondigde producten (Cyrix III, Samuel) zullen overigens voor dit jaar gewoon gehandhaafd blijven, voor volgend jaar staan er nieuwe modellen in de planning.

Taiwan chip designer Via Technologies Inc. said Monday that it plans to spin off its CPU business into a separate company in the second quarter of this year.

“We already have CPU products on the market, and business is suitable to create a separate company to deal exclusively with CPUs,” said We-chi Chen, president and chief executive of Via.

Via will own the new company and invest between $100 million and $300 million in the venture. Chen said that he considered acquiring a CPU company, but instead decided to spin off the business.

[...] The CPU spin-off is still without a name. Chen said that Via will choose a Chinese name for the new company.

Via will not change the CPU company's product line this year, but intends to introduce new products next year, Chen said.

DeezTech heeft een review geschreven van een P3-550E die hij met behulp van een VIA Apollo Pro 133A mobo op 825MHz (5.5 x 150MHz FSB) draait. De 550E kan dus toch wel gezien worden als een vrij redelijke opvolger van de befaamde Celly 300A:

Originally we used an ABIT BE6-II 440BX based board for our over clocking experiments. The BE6-II is an awesome overclockers board boasting bus speeds up to a whopping 200 MHz, along with core and I/O voltage adjustments. Unfortunately though, the BE6-II proved not to be the best board for this particular application. We were able to over clock the processor itself to unholy speeds of 840+ MHz. The problems we found didn't stem from the processor stability, but rather from the high AGP speeds that were forced to deal with. Both our TNT2 and V3 boards were not able to handle the 116+ MHz AGP speeds that we were throwing at them. So, we went out and got the VA6 which is the Apollo 133 based motherboard.from ABIT. The main advantage of this board was the ability of the chipset to cut the AGP speeds by one half. This particular ability allowed us to bring our 550E to a stable 825 MHz. Unfortunately, because this particular motherboard doesn't support bus speeds higher than 150 MHz, 825 MHz was the highest we could bring the processor. This speed is by no means anything to laugh at. We should be getting the ABIT CH6 i820 based board in the near future, and then we are going to revisit our 550E for some more benchmark action. The only complaint we had with the VA6 was the Via Chipset's slower nature which became quite evident in our Sandra 2000 benchmarks.

Ik zie dat Target PC een review heeft gebakken van de Aqua Blue midi-tower ATX kast, voorzien van een blauw gekleurde voorgevel. Daarnaast is er voor een betere airflow een 80mm fan in de voorkant verwerkt (die blauwe dop). Hieronder vast een gedeelte uit de test:

At the first glance, the Aqua case doesn't have anything in common with iMAC's look and couldn't be compared to anything in today's market. I personally expected a standard looking case with a blue painted bottom. But I ended up being wrong. The case has an amazing good and solid look; the artistic polish is definitely a job well done.

The floppy drive isn't inserted directly from the exterior, but instead it must be inserted from the back, which is covered by the case's front floppy deck. This is mostly due to the case's exterior look not being 100% flat. It's more like a 1/3 of a sphere. I personally think that the floppy deck is a very good improvement on the design.

Another interesting feature is the plastic covers, they are extremely easy to remove and re-mount. No more metal covers and screwdrivers are required. The covers are mounted using 2 brackets on each side of the case, which makes the exterior screw-less.

Speedy 3D heeft een review geschreven van het Soltek SL-77KV KX33 moederbord met een 5/1/1/1/ PCI/ISA/AMR/AGP configuratie en 3 DIMM sloten. Op het gebied van overklokken wist de reviewer de SL-77KV op 114MHz stabiel te krijgen. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

At a cost of around £100/$160, the Soltek board is simple and very easy to install for those familiar with motherboards. It lacked a more detailed manual, advanced Overclocking features, badly placed ATX Power Connector, confusing manual instructions and support for the newer 900-1Ghz Athlons.

On the plus side, despite the lack of detailed documentation you should still have no problems installing it. Windows98 thinks it's a gem and updated drivers from VIA are commonplace, so you should never have a problem keeping up. It's easy to use, well priced and made by a top board manufacturer; we'd especially recommend it to owners of GeForce cards!

This is an excellent board, one whose class outstands the rest but does miss out on just a few areas that could have so easily been changed and weren't. We suspect that a BIOS update will arrive to support the new CPU's, so at least all is not lost. A good board, Speedy3D Recommended!

Cisco Systems (marktleider op het gebied van netwerkoplossingen voor Internet) gaat gaat het grootste kantorencomplex van Amsterdam bouwen. Er moeten in totaal 5000 mensjes in gaan werken die allemaal in het eerste kwartaal van 2002 kunnen beginnen. Hieronder een stukkie uit dit bericht van Planet Internet:

Om het gat te dichten tussen de bijna niet te leveren P3-800 en de nog slechter leverbare P3-1000 released Intel vandaag de P3-850 (100MHz bussnelheid) en de P3-866 (133MHz bussnelheid). Helaas is er nog geen bios update beschikbaar die de P3-850 aan de praat kan krijgen waardoor we het in deze review van Anand nu nog even moeten doen met slechts de 866MHz benchmarks. Zoals reeds bekend uit de review van Sharky Extreme scaled deze qua prestaties vrijwel lineair ten opzichte van tragere PIII's.

For overclockers, the best choice is to stick with one of the lower clock speed processors, either the Pentium III 500E/550E/600E or similarly clocked Athlons and push them to the higher clock speeds. In most cases, this is a very feasible option since the yields on these chips are high enough that the lower end CPUs can actually hit the higher end speeds without much trouble.

If you're considering one of these new Pentium IIIs, first of all, don't expect to be able to go online to your favorite vendor and find them with much ease. Secondly, Intel's next generation 0.18-micron Celerons are due out shortly, and if all goes according to plan these Celerons will be the next major overclockers since they will be based on the same 0.18-micron process as the current Coppermine Pentium IIIs. Since these Celerons will run on a 66MHz FSB by default, they will feature pretty high clock multipliers, luckily with the slowest chips most likely debuting in the 533 - 600MHz range we are expecting to be able to overclock these babies to 800 - 900MHz.

Tomson schrijft: "Ace's Hardware maakt melding van het feit dat de meeste moederborden die zijn uitgerust met de i840 chipset geen gebruik maken van de Rambus mogelijkheden, maar SDRAM daarvoor in de plaats gebruiken (ondanks het performance verlies). Ze zien het somber in voor Rambus als dit zo doorgaat.":

A quick query of the motherboard makers has revealed that most motherboards based on Intel's i840, Intel's high-end chipset, support SDRAM instead of RDR RAM (Rambus). That is surprising, as the i840 with its dual Rambus channels and prefetch cache performs very well with Rambus. And using SDRAM on i840 requires the use of a MTH (Memory Translation Hub), which degrades performance significantly.

Even SuperMicro , the company which has always adopted Intel's technology very fast, has no i840 - Rambus board. The fact that Supermicro was one of the first to deliver a Rambus based i820 board (review here ), makes it even more interesting. Manufactures feel that Rambus is not reliable enough for the primary target market of i840: workstations and servers. Combine this with the fact that Timna, Intel's low end processor will also be able to work together with SDRAM, and that Intel's Merced en Foster (Willamette for Server) will use DDR SDRAM, and the future for Rambus looks very dark.

EBN Online heeft een artikel gepost over de deal waarmee Intel op het laatste moment AMD aan de kant zette als leverancier van de X-Box processor. Volgens insiders heeft Intel alles uit de kast moeten halen om dit contract met Microsoft rond te krijgen. De marges zijn hoogstwaarschijnlijk erg laag, gezien deze reaktie van een AMD mannetje waarin gesproken wordt over het 'weggeven' van processors:

AMD's Athlon had its slot in the X-Box locked up until Microsoft made a last-minute switch to Intel the day before chairman Bill Gates unveiled the new machines, said Richard Doherty, an analyst at The Envisioneering Group Inc., Seaford, N.Y. Game developers had even been working with AMD to develop software to run on the Athlon processor in preparation for an X-Box launch later this year, he said.

Intel “was forced to bid whatever it took to get into the X-Box to dislodge AMD and use the Microsoft game player as a centerpiece for its own consumer-market penetration,” said Bert McComas, an analyst at InQuest Inc., Gilbert, Ariz. Intel has been “remarkably unsuccessful” in getting its processors designed into consumer products such as game players, set-top boxes, and handheld devices, McComas noted. Intel's worst-case scenario would have been to see AMD use the X-Box to penetrate the consumer-electronics segment, he said.

In het artikel wordt trouwens geschreven dat de X-Box processor op een 800 of 900MHz Pentium III gaat draaien, da's al meer dan de 600MHz uit eerdere speculaties. Verder krijgt-ie DDR geheugen op een bus met een bandwidth van 6,2GB/s (wat toevallig overeen lijkt te komen met dual PC3200 DDR SDRAM).

Slashhead bracht een linkje naar S/U/M/A Systems, een of andere vage koreaans toko die na Absolute Multimedia als tweede fabrikant met een los verkrijgbare 64MB GeForce op de markt komt. Of het ding ook in Nederland verkrijgbaar zal zijn is niet bekend:

Sharky kreeg de kans om wat aan de nieuwe PIII 866 te mogen sabbelen. Getest werd een exemplaar in slot 1 uitvoering, tegenwoordig door Intel 'SC242 connector' genoemd. De proc werd gebenchmarked op een i820 plank met SDRAM en bleek qua prestaties vrijwel lineair te scalen ten opzichte van tragere PIII's:

The Pentium III 866MHz had no surprises in store for us in the performance department, performing pretty much linearly in comparison to its brethren. It did perform surprisingly well against the Athlon in most tests though, surpassing even the Athlon 1GHz in some. All in all, the Pentium III showed off the benefits of a faster L2 cache. It falls behind a little bit in some tests, but matches or pulls far ahead of Athlons at equivalent speed in most situations.

CpuTune heeft een review van de Epox 7KXA Slot A moederplank met KX133 chipset op het net gegooid. Naast een paar 3DMark 2000, Winbench en SiSoft Sandra benchmarks (zonder vergelijking met andere borden) wordt er in de review een korte opmerking over de overklokbaarheid van dit 7KXA plankje gemaakt:

I tried to set the FSB to 110MHz but windows was very unstable. I suspect the L2 cache on the Athlon 700 to be the problem. It runs at half the speed of the CPU (350MHz). With the FSB set to 110 the cache runs at 385MHz. And with the 700 having the fastest cache of the Athlons a lower cache divider might be needed for higher speeds. Adjusting the cache divider requires some soldering.

However I tried 110 FSB on my brothers Athlon 550 and it was rock stable.

PC-Net.com heeft de primeur met de eerste review van de AOpen AK72. Voordat we allemaal van blijdschap die review gaan lezen moet ik helaas mededelen dat de tekst in een nogal wazig (chinees?) taaltje is geschreven en dat er daarom afgezien van benchmark resultaten geen zinnige info uit de review te halen is. Uit de benchmarks blijkt dat de AK72 in vrijwel alle tests achter blijft bij de Epox 7KXA. Of de soms behoorlijk grote verschillend het gevolg zijn van een brak hardware design of van een ranzig BIOS is iets wat we binnenkort hopelijk in andere reviews te weten komen.

Onze Russische kameraden van iXBT hebben hun maandelijkse hardware nieuws overzicht online gezet, met daarin een samenvatting van de onwikkelingen die er de afgelopen maand op processor, geheugen, video en storage gebied plaats vonden. Hier een quote over de Willamette presentatie op 't Intel Developer Forum:

Willamette planned for this October has become a real sensation of IDF carried out in mid February. Certainly! Just take a look at the chip's clock frequency: 1.5GHz! Despite 1GHz chips shown at ISSCC, which at first seemed the top of the today's technology, 1.5GHz value had an unbelievably impressive effect on the public. But as soon as you found out what had been undertaken to achieve this speed, you would hardly be less impressed: take for instance a 20-stage pipeline or a significantly slower FPU compared to that of Pentium III.

No wonder that the CPU performance increases only due to higher clock frequency, as we can see from the first chip samples. Coppermine and Willamette working at the same clock frequency are absolutely equal in integer operations and differ by only 5% in floating point operations (Willamette proves 5% faster than Coppermine). However, we can't but hope that when Willamette is finally launched, software developers will start applying SSE2 instructions set, which is really capable of using the processor's entire potential.

iXBT schrijft trouwens dat ServerWorks een Willamette chipset met DDR support op de planning heeft staan.

AMD Zone heeft een artikel gepost over de AMD Sledgehammer, een 64-bit processor die met de door AMD in eigen huis ontwikkelde x86-64 extensie voortbordeert op de aloude x86 instructieset:

The Sledgehammer will not be able to boast the SPECfp performance of the Itanium, because it would not be using the same RISC FP architecture. AMD already predicts a 5% speed loss in both integer and floating point operations when compared to a native 64-bit application. Also, the Sledgehammer will be a bigger chip than the current Athlon. AMD has predicted a 5% gain in die size, which would mean about 30 fewer chips per 12-inch wafer. But, this size is nothing compared to some preliminary reports concerning the Itanium. People have said the Itanium could be used as a replacement part in an EZ-Bake oven if need be, a testament to its size and power consumption. The Itanium may be released as only an 800Mhz part, while the Sledgehammer could top 2Ghz. Also, there is speculation about AMD releasing the Sledgehammer with multiple chips on a single die. This coupled with AMD?s new Lightening Data Transport (LDT) protocol points to AMD edging into the multiprocessing market. For the next 4 years the Sledgehammer appears to be in the best position, but after that, the IA-64 standard will probably overtake the Sledgehammer. Of course, who knows what AMD has got in its SkunkWorks, a K9 perhaps?

Als ik moest kiezen tussen een console die a) op Windows draait of b) op Linux draait, dan zou ik het toch moeilijk krijgen. Windows is goed vanwege de compatibiliteit met spellen enzo, 3D werkt er goed op, en Linux vanwege stabiliteit. Nu lijkt het me niet dat je zo'n console als server ofzo zou willen opzetten, dus ik ben benieuwd wat dit gaat worden...

Mike Andrawes van AnandTech heeft weer een nieuwe review ge-upt, ditmaal van het MSI K7Pro AMD 750 Slot-A ATX moederbord. Dit is een nieuw Athlon mobo van MSI dat helaas niet gebaseert is op de nieuwe Via KX133 chipset maar nog op de oude AMD chipset. Ze hebben alleen wel wat aan het reference design verandert dat ze met hun eerdere Athlon bord volgden. Op de MSI K7Pro is nu namelijk geen AMR slot te vinden alhoewel een ISA slot nog wel aanwezig is. Uiteindelijk kreeg het plankje een rating van 7 uit 10:

The biggest issue we had with the K7Pro is that it is based on a
chipset that is being phased out instead of a more up to date
solution, VIA's KX133. While the AGP 4X support of the KX133
doesn't offer a huge performance improvement over the AGP 2X
limitation of the AMD 750 chipset, the PC133 memory support of
the KX133 can definitely come in handy, especially in professional
level applications that are very memory bandwidth dependent.

Our particular K7Pro sample had trouble with the Irongate's
SuperBypass feature, which greatly enhances performance.
Although the BIOS had an option for enabling it, that option was
grayed out, indicating that SuperBypass was not detected. The next
step was to use a software utility to enable it. We found that we had
an AMD 751 North Bridge that was revision C6, which should be
sufficient for SuperBypass support. Unfortunately, for reasons
unknown to us, the system would lockup whenever we tried to
enable it. We'll let MSI know what we found and hopefully a fix will
become available.

If for some reason you're still looking for a motherboard based on
the AMD 750 chipset, the K7Pro is an excellent choice. It's less
expensive than most other AMD 750 boards, while stability, quality,
and features are up there with the best of them. We are confident
that the SuperBypass issue we encountered will be resolved with a
BIOS update. However, the KX133 chipset is now widely available
and generally provides better performance without introducing any
drawbacks. For now, we'll have to recommend that users looking for
the best Athlon solution consider a KX133 board, but there's no
doubt that K7Pro is a solid motherboard.
