Via Ace's Hardware liep ik tegen deze enorme tabel met SPEC benchmarks van Macinfo.de. De Athlon en Pentium III doen het helemaal niet slecht ten opzichte van de G4 (PowerPC 7400). Vergeleken met andere RISC processors (die niet beperkt zijn door het manke x87 registermodel) doet de G4 het qua FPU performance eigenlijk erg slecht:

Ik lees bij JC dat de release van de high-end AMD 770 chipset is vooruitgeschoven naar juli. Met de komst van de AMD 770 (aka Irongate 4) wordt het eindelijk mogelijk om een brute dual Athlon config aan te planten . Onderstaande info is afkomstig van c't en naar het engels vertaald:

Dual-Mainboards and DDR-SDRAM for Athlon are comming earlier than expected. DDR is scheduled for July (Irongate-4 aka. AMD760) and AMD770 for dual processing and DDR is scheduled for the same time. At the same time, Athlons will have a 2*133Mhz bus. but that is all not really new.

Zoals je eerder in deze posting van Robin hebt kunnen lezen zal de X-Box niet van een AMD processor voorzien zijn. Op het message board van Silicon Investor heeft ene Toni Beckham van AMD een reaktie gepost op dit nieuws:

Microsoft will NOT use AMD processors for its XBox product. Although we are always looking for opportunities for a closer relationship with Microsoft, AMD was not prepared to give the processors away to gain the XBox business.

Although it might have been desirable incremental business, participating in that market is contrary to our strategic goal of gaining market share in the high-end of the PC market where we can achieve higher margins with the industry's complete line of high-performance PC processors.

This development does not change AMD's expectation of reaching $1 billion revenue in each quarter of this year, nor does it change our goal of reaching 30% unit market share by the end of 2001.

Its demented "Concept PC" showpieces even include designs tagged "the ultimate games machine" (this being the IT business, there are of course several and they keep getting better). Intel also has the fabbing capacity to be able to knock out vast quantities of 600MHz-class chips (custom, maybe?) at a ludicrously low price by the middle of next year. Yes, we know it doesn't look like that now...

It's pretty obvious that unless you have a million dollars lying around, this message is targeted to the OEMs, not individuals. We are working with IBM, HP, and Dell. So, if you want a system, check with those folks. As for individual processor sales, OEM or "boxed", I would look to your individual dealers or distributors but when we say "limited" volume I wouldn't expect much out there from them at this point in time.

Een korte blik op de 128 MB PC100 SDRAM prijzen in de Pricewatch leert mij dat deze prijzen de afgelopen dagen weer gedaald zijn. Ook de Memory Module Index van Global Sources laat voor de 128MB prijzen een lichte daling zien:

Hopelijk wil dit zeggen dat de markt, na de aantrekkende Pentium III supplies in de afgelopen weken, weer redelijk stabiel is. Het is een jaarlijks terugkerend verschijnsel dat de DRAM prijzen tot circa juli/augustus dalen, waarna er tot december weer een stijging volgt.

The Security Risk

The original Pretty Park vandal Trojan first made its debut in May 1999. The new Pretty Park vandal, officially called “Win32.PRETTYPARK.B” or “W32/Pretty.Worm.unp”, is an uncompressed version of the original worm and spreads as an attachment to email messages. This uncompressed variant has the same functionality of the original attack, but with different signature that cannot be detected by standard anti-virus scanning programs. The file usually arrives in email with the subject line: "C:\CoolProgs\PrettyPark.exe".

The file attached in the email named "Pretty Park.EXE", and displays an icon with a picture of Kyle - a character from the cartoon series "South Park". When executed, this worm may display the 3D pipe screen saver. It drops a file named FILES32.VXD into the Windows\System directory, and configures the Windows registry to execute this file every time a program file is run. Pretty Park can infect users of all Windows platforms. For up-to-date information and alerts, please visit Aladdin’s Content Security Resource Center at: http://www.esafe.com/csrt/.

The Impact

Once the vandal program is executed, it will try to email itself automatically every 30 minutes (or 30 minutes after it is loaded) to email addresses registered in your Internet address book. Although the vandal does not attempt to email documents, network administrators will face backlogged servers and bandwidth restrictions when the vandal replicates to each entry in the infected user’s address book, every 30 minutes.

Pretty Park may also try to connect to an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) server and join a specific IRC channel. The worm will send information to IRC every 30 seconds to keep itself connected, and to retrieve any commands from the IRC channel.

Tijd voor alle virus ridders om hun mannelijke instincten te volgen en de wereld te beschermen tegen de invloeden van dit kwade virus. Ik (meerdere keren lastig gevallen door PP2 mailings) heb m'n zusje alvast gemailt dat ze geen gekke mailtjes open moeten maken .

CPU Review heeft weer een nieuwe PIII / Athlon prijsvergelijking bij elkaar geharkt, volgens welke de Athlon nu bij alle snelheden minimaal 20% goedkoper dan de Pentium III. iXBT heeft een uitgebreid artikel neer gemikt rond ATi's next-generation Rage6 graphics accelerator. De belangrijkste specificaties van de Rage6 zijn: dubbele rendering pipeline met 3 texturing units, 200-400MHz core kloksnelheid en 200MHz memory bus. De fillrate bedraagt bij multi-texturing met een 200MHz core 800MTex/s. Bij een 400MHz core en tripple texturing stijgt de fillrate tot 2400 MTex/s. Volgens iXBT is het design van de Rage6 beter geschikt voor hoge kloksnelheden dan het complexe quad pipeline ontwerp van de GeForce:

GeForce's 256bit core is made up due to 4 64bit units working in parallel and connected to one and the same internal bus. As a result, the mutual electromagnetic influence (and to be more exact - mutual signal fronts' influence) is so high that the core working frequency and performance get significantly lower. To combat this unpleasant effect NVIDIA had to cut down the core frequency of its GeForce 256 to 120MHz so that it worked more stable. Even the use of 0.22 micron technology doesn't affect so greatly the general performance as the architectural peculiarities. Of course, this is a relatively primitive explanation: we didn't touch upon a number of other factors. However, it seems to be enough to give you an idea of what we were talking about.

Rage6 can boast a much finer realization. Primitively speaking, instead of four 64bit units there are two 128bit ones connected in parallel to the internal bus via special buffer, which positively tells on the performance. Therefore, even when working at equal clock frequencies, Rage6 will perform about 1.5 times faster than GeForce 256. Nevertheless, we think that Rage6 owes this performance to internal chip architecture intended for higher clock frequencies. They can be achieved due to the use of a rendering pipeline requiring a greater amount of simpler stages (compared to GeForce 256). Since 3D graphics algorithms are more regular and a large number of pipeline stages doesn't cause any serious delays in case pipeline restarting is needed. We will be able to check if our expectations are true as soon as we get a working Rage6 based card. And for the time being all the info is just the info: no proven facts.

De eerste Rage6 kaarten, met kloksnelheden tussen de 200 en 250MHz, komen volgens iXBT in mei op de markt. Een Rage6 met 32MB DDR SGRAM zou ongeveer 250 dollar gaan kosten.

Het door Nederlanders gemaakte spel 'Moorhuhnjagd', waarin onschuldige kippen (fazanten volgens mij?) om hen leven gebracht moeten worden, kent op dit moment een enorme populariteit onder kantoorwerkers in Duitsland. Volgens berekening lijdt het Duitse bedrijfsleven door de Moorhuhnjagd-rage tijdens kantooruren ruim 1 miljoen gulden schade per tien minuten :

Inmiddels spelen miljoenen Duitsers, van jong tot oud, dagelijks één of meerdere potjes Moorhuhnjagd. Het eenvoudige spelletje, dat gratis via internet wordt verspreid, werd twee jaar geleden al door het Heemsteedse Witan Entertainment gemaakt, in opdracht van whisky-merk Johnnie Walker. Toen enkele weken geleden een Duits radiostation aandacht aan het spel besteedde, sloeg de vlam in de pan: Moorhuhnjagd werd een hype waar geen schietgrage Duitser meer omheen kan.

JM stuurde ons een link naar WebWereld waar wat info staat over Freenet, een systeem vergelijkbaar met Napster waarmee je volkomen anoniem bestanden kunt uitwisselen. Ian Clarke, een Ierse student en oprichter van Freenet creëert hiermee de perfecte omgeving voor softwarepiraten.

Belangrijk verschil met het conventionele web is dat Freenet geen gecentraliseerde beheersstructuur heeft. Er bestaat geen DNS-systeem en ook IP-adressen ontbreken. Zo wordt het vrijwel onmogelijk de gebruikers te traceren. Volgens Clarke is het zelfs moeilijk om vast te stellen of iemand een Freenet-server draait en wat voor informatie daarop staat.

"Mijn motivatie was censuur zo moeilijk mogelijk te maken", aldus Clarke tegen Wired. "Met internet is het potentieel te censureren en te monitoren groter dan ooit. Ik wilde technologie ontwikkelen waarmee dat onmogelijk wordt." Als belangrijke motivatie geeft Clarke de verregaande censuurwetten die in januari van kracht zijn geworden in Australië.

[...] Freenet is zo ontworpen dat het onmogelijk is te achterhalen waar bepaalde informatie daadwerkelijk is opgeslagen. Bestanden die worden geupload worden gelijktijdig op meerdere plekken opgeslagen. Als iemand poogt een bestand te verwijderen, wordt het automatisch nog een aantal malen gekopieerd naar een aantal servers.

Volgens Clarke is er maar één manier om een bestand van Freenet te halen: heel het netwerk platleggen. Dat zal lastiger worden al naar gelang de populariteit van Freenet stijgt.

KBench heeft de specs van de Matrox G450 en G800 gepost. De G450 wordt volgens deze informatie een licht verbeterde G400 met DDR SDRAM en een 0,18micron core. De G800 is een geheel nieuw produkt dat in september op de markt komt en waarvan ook versies met twee chips (a la Voodoo5-5000/5500) beschikbaar komen:

De Automatiserings Gids schrijft dat Vobis binnenkort 0800 internet toegang aan gaat bieden. Om aan het spelletje mee te kunnen doen moet je wel een 'speciaal voor internet geconfigureerde' Vobis bak leasen (thanks Steven voor de tip):

Het gaat daarbij om een snelle PC, die is voorzien van een printer, een scanner en een Webcam. De leaseperiode bedraagt minimaal drie jaar en per dag wordt een bedrag van 2,95 gulden in rekening gebracht. Daardoor kost de hele configuratie 3240 gulden.

De Internet-toegang draagt de naam Vobisnet en werkt met een gratis (0800) telefoonnummer. De gebruikers dienen zich te identificeren met hun klantnummer van Vobis.

Nu.nl brengt het bericht dat de aandelenkoers van Sony vandaag met ruim 2,6% is gedaald nadat het bedrijf had toegegeven dat er technische probs met de PS2 zijn (thanks vixtory voor de tip):

CDFreaks meldt dat er een nieuwe versie 4.0.8.8 van Nero is gereleased. Op Ahead.de is de file nog niet te vinden, maar CDFreaks heeft een linkje naar liveware.533.net/cdrw/nero4088.exe waar je 'm errug traag naar binnen kunt halen. Ik haal er op dit moment 0,0KB/s op een SURFnet lijntje (thanks Eelco voor de tip).

If you're looking for a well-tested, stable release, and can't afford the inconveniences that new software can sometimes cause, then you are probably better off sticking with the 3.3.x releases for now. If you have the resources to try out the new version and investigate its features, or if you just like being on the bleeding edge, then please try 4.0!

Bij Reverend zijn wat meer Quake III en Test Drive 5 screenshots gepost draaiend onder een Voodoo5 met Full Sceen Anti-Aliasing (FSAA). Vanwege het feit dat 3dfx niet wil dat de pics worden gedownscaled of uit het .tga format worden gehaald moet je hier de shots ingezipt neerladen. Ter vergelijking zijn er ook GeForce pics bijgesloten met FSAA via de beta 5.08 Detonator drivers.

The Adrenaline Vault heeft ook zo'n dergelijk pakketje ontvangen van 3dfx, met shots uit Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer en NBA 2000.

Het is zover, Bill Gates heeft gisterenavond in een newsfeed officieel de X-Box game console aangekondigd. In tegenstelling tot wat eerder bekend werd gemaakt zal niet AMD maar toch Intel de processor van de X-Box gaan leveren, (zie dit bericht bij Yahoo). Erg jammer voor AMD, dit was een perfecte mogelijkheid geweest om haar afzet verder te vergoten. nVidia zal het grafische gedeelte voor haar rekening nemen, waarschijnlijk in de vorm van een NV11 of NV15. Het hele zaakie zou 2 keer zo snel moeten zijn dan elk ander platform.

*Update* Volgens dit artikel bij Yahoo Finance zal nVidia geen GeForce of een NV15, maar de NV25 gaan gebruiken als 3D processor in de X-Box. Ter vergelijking met de kracht van de Playstation 2 zou de NV25 3 keer zo snel moeten zijn . Over de te gebruiken processor zou nog steeds getwijfeld worden tussen Intel of AMD:

"We're taking the time today to announce the breakthrough game console known as X-Box," said Gates during the feed. "The X-box provides performance better than twice that of any previous platform."

"X-Box is a global product so we'll be selling it worldwide," continued Gates. "...We're very anxious to have software developers throughout the world contributing to the platform." Microsoft stressed the importance of getting X-Box development kits into the hands of developers now in order to give them a year's worth of time to create what Gates hopes to be "unbelievable games".

Executives from Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games, Infogrames, Midway, Acclaim, Konami, Sierra Studios, and other game developers extolled the virtues of the X-Box, citing its universal hardware standard and powerful graphics as some of its many outstanding features.

And what of continued Microsoft support for the existing PC? "It's important to know that the X-Box complements the PC, and we see the X-Box in the living room," said Gates. "The PC will continue to grow in the other parts of the house and we're going to make sure that developers can target both of these products very easily."

Gates is expected to unveil the X-Box's complete specifications, and give more details behind the console's developer support at the Game Developers Conference Friday morning in San Jose.

Therefore, after 30 days from the purchase date, memory problems related to the chipset:

"1. Can not be returned for credit"
"2. Can not be returned for RMA"
"3. Can not be exchanged for future stepping 840 chipset boards"

Unless distributors sign up to these terms and conditions, Super Micro is refusing to supply these two models. Super Micro is also asking distributors to contact customers who have already bought these mainboards to alert them of this limited warranty.
