Radio Online Homepage meldt in dit korte bericht dat Casema voor bijna 100 miljoen pieken het kabelnet van Amstelveen overneemt:

De gemeente Amstelveen verkoopt haar kabelnet aan Casema. Amstelveen, waar 37.500 mensen een kabelaansluiting hebben, ontvangt 97,5 miljoen gulden van het bedrijf. Dat is ongeveer 2600 gulden per aansluiting. Als de gemeenteraad 22 maart instemt met het voorstel krijgen de inwoners van Amstelveen een gratis decoder waarmee ze tegen betaling diensten van Casema kunnen afnemen. Met de decoder kunnen Casema-klanten onder meer zonder computer het internet op. Naast Casema had ook UPC een bod gedaan op het Amstelveens kabelnet. Evenals in Alphen aan den Rijn had UPC ook hier het nakijken.

De Automatiseringsgids meldt dat er een Japans export verbod dreigt voor de Playstation II. Het apparaat staat vanwege zijn encryptie en compressie technieken op een zogeheten verboden lijst van de Japanse overheid:

Op deze lijst, die vergeleken mag worden met de Cocom-lijst uit de westerse wereld, staan goederen die niet zonder speciale vergunning uitgevoerd mogen worden. Normaliter staan op deze lijst alleen geavanceerde computersystemen en specialistische apparatuur, zoals nachtkijkers en sensoren.

Wil Sony inderdaad zijn spelcomputers in het najaar introduceren op de Europese en Amerikaanse markten, dan zal het concern een speciale vergunning moeten aanvragen.

ThE ChOsEn OnE gaf een link af naar dit artikel van Nu.nl waarin de overname van SBS door UPC bekend wordt gemaakt. Met de overname is een bedrag gemoeid van 6,4 miljard gulden. Met de voorgenomen overname wil UPC eigen content in huis halen om niet langer afhankelijk te zijn van leveranciers. Hieronder het persbericht ingestuurd door Mark:

AMSTERDAM/LUXEMBURG - Het kabelbedrijf United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC) heeft vandaag een bod uitgebracht op radio- en tvbedrijf SBS Broadcasting. Met de overname is een bedrag gemoeid van 2,8 miljard dollar (f 6,4 miljard), aldus een vandaag uitgegeven verklaring.

De directie van SBS adviseert haar aandeelhouders het bod te accepteren. Op de effectenbeurs van Amsterdam, waar beide bedrijven staan genoteerd, reageerden beleggers verdeeld. Het aandeel SBS schoot 30 procent omhoog, UPC zakte daarentegen ruim 7 procent.

UPC heeft al een belang van 23 procent in SBS, moederbedrijf van onder meer de Nederlandse tv-zenders SBS6 en Net5. Ze werkten sinds vorig jaar samen bij het kopen van uitzendrechten en het ontwikkelen van themakanalen. De overname brengt twee verliesgevende bedrijven bij elkaar.

UPC, dat via zijn kabels ook internet aanbiedt, biedt op het Scandinavische SBS met aandelen en contanten. SBS bezit tien televisie- en zeventien radiostations in tien Europese landen. UPC is via UPCtv al actief in de televisiewereld. Samen zullen ze actief worden in achttien Europese landen.

De twee bedrijven willen de distributiekanalen, ofwel de kabels, van UPC met de inhoud van SBS combineren. Vooral voor de ontwikkeling van internetactiviteiten is dat erg belangrijk. Wereldwijd zoeken mediabedrijven al partners in de internetwereld en andersom. De grootste fusie op dat gebied vond eerder dit jaar plaats tussen America Online en Time-Warner.

Ik lees bij Nu.nl dat de bruna in haar "Computerkrant voor Kinderen" per ongeluk een link heeft geplaatst naar een porno-site. Reden voor het foutje zou volgens de Bruna bij de betreffende webmaster liggen. Die wilde wat meer geld verdienen en besloot de kindersite te veranden in een 'adult-only' paradijs :

UTRECHT - De Computerkrant voor Kinderen heeft in het jongste nummer zijn jeugdige lezers onbedoeld verwezen naar een pornosite. De uitgever van de krant, Bruna, heeft alle 40.000 abonnees een excuusbrief moeten sturen en de betrokken editie van het krantje herdrukt.

De Computerkrant, die onregelmatig verschijnt, zet in elk nummer een aantal internetsites op een rijtje die iets te bieden hebben voor de jeugd. Zo ook de pornosite die, voor zover bekend bij Bruna, geen pornosite was maar een site voor "13-jarigen", aldus een woordvoerder van Bruna.

"Ongeveer een maand geleden heeft de eigenaar van de site deze omgezet naar een 'adult site', omdat daar meer mee te verdienen viel", aldus de woordvoerder. Bruna is daarvan niet op de hoogte gesteld.

Johan De Gelas van Ace's Hardware heeft een interessant artikel geschreven over de 1GHz processoren van Intel en AMD. Hoewel het erg speciaal is om 1000MHz CPU's te fabriceren was het misschien beter geweest van de twee chipgiganten om even te wachten totdat ze er écht klaar voor waren. Hieronder vast een gedeelte:

Competition is not always beneficial to the customer. The Athlon scales better than the PIII, and AMD could not let the chance to be the first to 1 GHz slip by. The result, however, is that the 900-1GHz Athlon (1.8V) might not be a viable upgrade for a lot of Athlon owners because the power requirements will even more stringent than they were before. That is a real shame for the people who would like to upgrade.

Several people have reported that the Athlon 750 and 800 work fine with older 235W power supplies. I have personally seen that even the Athlon 700 (.25 micron, 50W max) combined with a Guillemot Geforce DDR works fine with an older 235W power supply.

We advise you to wait for the Thunderbird, which will offer a much larger speed boost and should consume less power, thanks to copper interconnects and lower core voltages.

The Athlon captured the title of "the first to 1 GHz," and, of course, Intel had to do something. Unfortunatly, it will be extremely difficult to obtain a 1 GHz PIII. The orginal roadmap mentioned a 1 GHz release in the third quarter of 2000, and that is the real Intel roadmap (AMD's 1 GHz chip was scheduled around April). The result of this recent early announcement is a 1 GHz PIII that will only be available in limited amounts (see JC's inquiry) in very high priced OEM PCs. Even if you are lucky enough to find a 1 GHz PIII to upgrade your machine, you might be faced with a instable machine since the PIII has such strict temperature requirements.

The only real niche where the VIA Apollo Pro 133A is a clear winner over the tweaked out BX-chipset is in high FSB support. To put it in straight talk -- Coppermine overclocking! In this regard, the MS-6309 implementation of the VIA Apollo Pro 133A offers improved performance in every category over the BX chipset. This is one motherboard that is going to stay in my casing for a little while longer.

Thanks to Idiot for sending me this link from PC Watch Japan. If you look at it you will notice it is a platform/motherboard roadmap for AMD processors. Judging from this information, it would seem that there may be limited production of Socket-A motherboards and Spitfire CPUs as early as April. These supplies will probably just be stockpiled, but if the roadmap is true, we could see limited shipments to follow in May. Socket-A motherboard production looks rather sluggish for the initial months of May through July, however. Spitfire production in June looks to be roughly equivalent to Athlon production in January, with Socket-A/Spitfire becoming more dominant each month thereafter.

Op de MSI stand hoorde ik dat mijn normale Nederlandse contactpersonen al weer terug naar Nederland vertrokken waren. Gelukkig waren hun Duitse collega’s zo vriendelijk om mij toch een uitgebreide rondleiding door het nieuwe productoverzicht te geven. AMD Zone maakt ons blij met een nieuwe bios voor de Epox 7KXA KX133 mobo. Epox heetf twee dingen gefixt:

2. If using dual monitor and bios set "Init Display First: AGP " then system always boot by PCI VGA card.

EETimes meldt dat Samsung haar Rambus produktievolumes gaat vervijfvoudigen naar 10 miljoen units per maand. Hyundai overweegt een capaciteitsuitbreiding, maar blijft voorlopig afwachtend:

Samsung said it will increase production from the current 2 million units per month to 10 million units/month by the second half of the year. The increase will be supported by an expansion of existing plants and planned new facilities. Samsung will focus production on 288-Mbit Rambus DRAMs, which have greater capacity than current-generation memory products. The company expects that its increased production of higher-capacity memory devices could give it a leg up over competitors.

If RDRAM demand does increase, Hyundai said, it will also expand production. The company is already expanding RDRAM production lines at its plant in Chungju, South Korea, and is preparing to produce as many as 5 million units/month there.

EBN Online meldt dat nVidia gisteren twee nieuwe low-cost video chipsets heeft geïntroduceerd; de Vanta LT en Aladdin TNT2. De Vanta LT is een opgevrolijkte Vanta met maximaal 16MB geheugen. De Aladdin TNT2 werd ontwikkelt in samenwerking met Acer Labs en combineert een P6 chipset en een TNT2 core:

The Vanta LT differs little from the existing Vanta chip, but increases the addressable frame buffer upward to 16 Mbytes. The Aladdin TNT2, in contrast, addresses 32 Mbytes of frame buffer DRAM, and features a Slot 1/Socket 370 interface using Intel Corp.'s P6 bus.

Both the Vanta LT chip and Aladdin TNT2 chipset are available in volume. While pricing was not available for the Vanta TNT2, the Aladdin TNT2 is priced at $33 in 10,000-unit lots.

HeXinator deponeerde een link naar al weer een nieuwe aanbieder van (downstream) internet via de Astra satelliet. BySky kost voor particulier gebruik 25 Euro per maand met 295 Euro setup kosten. In combinatie met een 0800 dialup verbinding zou dit voor de mensen in een voor kabel en ADSL onbereikbaar gebied een oplossing kunnen zijn om snel te internetten.

JC deed een klein informeel onderzoekje naar de levertijden en beschikbaarheid van 1GHz Athlon en Pentium III systemen bij HP, IBM, Gateway en Compaq. Volgens zijn eigengebreide schatting worden er deze maand 700 PIII's geleverd. Dit is voor de duidelijkheid geen informatie waar je je keihard op vast moet pinnen :

Well, HP gets a hundred parts a week and IBM gets possibly a little less than that. This might mean, from extrapolation, that Intel will ship something like 700 1GHz processors this month. Mind you, this is a blind guess. And the weekly number will probably ramp up as additional vendors are included. But if HP and IBM are the sole sellers, and if the numbers I got were accurate, then there's a speculative hypothesis to work with. No idea about the availability of the K7-1000. General word seems to be "we got truckloads of 'em". This is promising, but vague. Given the word that AMD will be shipping hundreds of thousands of 900MHz+ processors next quarter (er, I'll back that up next update), I'm inclined to believe that they're shipping no less than a thousand. Actually, I probably shouldn't tell you this, but I do have one fairly cool source who heavily implied (but again, vaguely) that the number of GHz Athlons this month would number in the thousands.

Chris Connolly van GamePC heeft een review van de zeer respectabele Klipsch ProMedia v2-400 THX speakers op z'n site geplant. In eerdere reviews werd deze set keer op keer de hemel in geprezen, zo ook bij deze review van GamePC:

Bass reproduction is incredible, the subwoofer's audio can get quite loud and still stay clear. No matter how high we took the volume, the audio didn't crack once. While you can't turn the subwoofer completely off, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume via the front right satellite's control pad. Even when the subwoofer volume is set to zero, the subwoofers are still firing, but very, very little sound is produced. Especially good for you apartment dwellers who don't feel like dealing with angry neighbors.

This merger, combining the two primary corporate supporters of BSD, will allow the new company to really focus its efforts on the improvement and promotion of BSD.

The other merger is that of the codebases of BSD/OS and FreeBSD. This merger will occur over (hopefully) the next year and result in a single operating system, still named FreeBSD. FreeBSD will remain completely open source and primarily under the BSD license, as it is today. Certain commercial drivers and components of BSD/OS which remain under NDA will be administered by BSD Inc. as add-on components. These components, along with the commercial backing, will be the value-added features separating FreeBSD from BSD/OS, which will continue as a commercial product (with FreeBSD at the core).

But how friendly is the merger? Look no further than the Principal Architect's chair. David Greenman, who has been Principal Architect for FreeBSD since its inception, and Mike Karels, who holds the position's analogue (Chief Systems Architect) at BSDI, will be co-architects for FreeBSD. This will essentially double the architectural leadership for the project.

In addition to the architect position, having the BSDI developers working on FreeBSD should greatly improve response time for creation of new hardware drivers and advanced features. These developers have managed to keep a closed-source BSD competitive with its open source cousins--no mean feat.
