Ik wil ff 1 ding heel duidelijk maken. Ik heb de tebenet page NIET gecrackt of gehackt of hoe je het ook wil noemen. Deze page staat op me eigen pc. De page van tebenet is gewoon onaangetast op hun eigen server die je hier kan vinden. Naar mijn weten heb ik niets onrechtmatigs of illegaals gedaan. Het enigste wat ik heb gedaan, is een webserver opgezet op mijn eigen pc. Tebenet gebruikers zien deze webserver als www.tebenet.nl. Nadat ik hierachter kwam, leek mij het wel een goede gelegenheid om duidelijk te maken hoe ik en honderden anderen over Tebenet denken. Het is nooit mijn bedoeling geweest om Tebenet of Tebenet gebruikers schade en/of ongemak te veroorzaken. Ik heb zelfs de proxy instellingen op mijn pc gezet, zodat de mensen die gebruik maken van de automatische proxyinstellingen, ongestoord met behulp van de proxy kunnen doorsurfen.

Tsja, je kan hier niet echt spreken van een defacing, maar een simpele fout van Tebenet. Het valt mij op hoe weinig mensen tevreden zijn met hun ISP. Aan de andere kant kan je het zo zien dat je alleen de klagers hoort. Maargoed, wat vinden we van deze 'actie' ?

Entech Taiwan heeft een nieuwe Powestrip in elkaar geknutseld met daarin wat updates voor Windows 2000. Hieronder meer info over versie versie 2.65:

The PowerStrip has been updated to 2.65, to keep in sync with the Windows 2000 drivers that have been released to date. AGP configuration can now be changed in real-time using visual controls on the Diagnostic page, the multi-monitor support has been updated, and custom refresh rates have been reworked to better stick in OpenGL and D3D.

Bij GamePC ligt een review klaar van de Seagate Cheetah 18LP Ultra160 harddisk. Deze bikkel beschikt over een cache van 4meg en maakt 10.000 omwentelingen per minuut. Hieronder wat meer info over zijn perormance:

The drive performed like it should without any problems. Though posting decent numbers in Sandra, the 18LP fell behind the Atlas 10K in ZD's Winbench99. Which only shows that Winbench did not fully use the 4MB cache on the Seagate. In the long run, the 18LP is still a pretty decent choice if you run data intensive programs, in which the 4MB cache should work in nicely. In terms for best bang for the buck, the Atlas 10K is still on top. But with the announcements of 15K RPM drives on the horizon, we wonder if 10K will still be worth the price. Many 10K drives are still a little pricey side and who knows where 15K drives will start off at. Hopefully the 15K RPM drives may bring down the price on 10K RPM drives making them more affordable. All in all, the Seagate 18LP 9GB Ultra160 drive did well enough to where we only recommend it in certain applications/occasions. But for now, anybody just wanting the best while still not going overboard should stick with the Atlas 10K line from Quantum.

I compared data sheets from various VIA chipsets to the Win2K INF that provides PNP support for chipsets. I found that the device
ID have changed with the 8371 Northbridge even though functional the Northbridge is very similar to previous VIA chipsets. Anyway to make a long story short I
was able to get the chips set
properly detected and AGP mode and 4X mode enabled. SBA is still alluding me.

• Willamette IA-32 Architecture will debut itself at 1.3Ghz and 1.4Ghz to be out at the end of Q4'2000 this year and by Q1 2001 it will reach 1.5 GHz. By the end of Q4 2001, the next possible Intel processor codenamed Northwood with a speed of 2Ghz and above will debut.
• Coppermine Celeron .128K will reach 733 MHz in Q4 2000 and higher than 733 MHz in Q12001.
• Pentium III 1Ghz are out in limited volume till Q3 2000 and will be more than 1Ghz by Q4 2000. After which the role will be taken over by Willamete.
• Itanium Merced with 4MB L3 cache will debut itself at 733Mhz and reach 800Mhz in Q4 2000. 64Bit McKinley processor may be out even before Itanium Merced but most probably next year, Madison in Q3 2002 and Deerfield in Q4 2002.
• Foster 32 Bit with 256K cache will debut at 1.4Ghz in Q4 2000 and 1.5Ghz in Q1 2001 and higher for rest of 2001. Foster with large L3 cache version will debut at 1.4Ghz in Q2 2001 and higher for rest of 2001.
• Foster next successor Gallatin will be out in Q1 2002 and higher for rest of 2002.

Chipset Roadmap

• Willamete will be using Tehama chipset ( dual channel direct RDRAM, Quad Pumped Bus and Serial ATA ) to be introduced in H2 2000. Also in the line up are i820e Camino2 and i815e Solano2 using ICH2 with ATA-100 interface and 4 USB support. i815e will incorporate i754 AGP (Coloma).
• Future Camino chipset which will be launched in Q2 2001, future I/O enhancements will take place. Possible enhancements are likely to be Serial ATA where Serial ATA 1X to be available in mid 2001 and offer 1.5 gigabits/sec that is 150MB/s.

Bij Akiba's PC Watch is te zien (lezen wil niet echt lukken met dat wazige Japans ) dat de de AOpen AX64Pro inmiddels in Japan verkrijgbaar is. Dit bord is gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset en heeft een bijzondere feature genaamd 'Die Hard' BIOS. Dit Die Hard BIOS kregen wij op de CeBIT stand van AOpen al te zien op een andere plank waar wij helaas niets over kunnen zeggen. In principe is het vergelijkbaar met Gigabyte's Dual BIOS, alleen werkt 't gebruiksvriendelijker. Wanneer je je BIOS omgebracht hebt kun je via een jumpertje het backup BIOS uit de tweede BIOS chip over laten zetten:

Ik kwam via JC bij deze onderstaand plaatje van de Microsoft X-Box presentatie. Volgens deze sheet krijgt de X-Box een x86 proc met 128KB L1 cache en 64KB L1. Da's vreemd, want deze specs komen overeen met hetgeen we tot nu toe van de AMD Spitfire weten:

These particular specs don't describe a Pentium III. This is closer to a description of the Athlon. Intel is planning for DDR SDRAM to only enter their chipset at the high end, server area. Intel's GTL+ is at 133MHz, and their next bus (for Willamette) will jump right to 100MHz, 400MT/s. Additionally, neither the PIII nor the Willamette have 128KB L1 cache and it's not that trivial to change the size of the L1 cache in a cpu design. Additionally, the note about 64KB L2 matches the very, very original rumours regarding the Spitfire (at least as far back as December). News Alert schrijft dat Intel, Corel en een aantal onbekende hardware fabrikanten volgens een onbevestigd bericht in een krant uit Toronto plannen hebben om met een goedkope Linux PC op de markt te komen:

The Globe and Mail first reported on Thursday that Corel, maker of WordPerfect Office and the CorelDraw graphics suite for Windows and Linux, was in talks on the project with Intel and hardware manufacturers -- possibly the PC Chips Group of Cos of Taiwan, which already works with both Intel and Corel.

On Friday the newspaper said PC Chips Group had confirmed it was in talks with both Intel and Corel. It also quoted Intel as saying it was not actively involved in talks on such a Linux project.

An Intel-backed computer running on Linux would be a direct challenge to Microsoft Corp.'s long-standing relationship with Intel.

JC heeft wat lekkere info over de Transmeta TM5400, afkomstig uit een artikel van Andreas Stiller. Deze befaamde journalist van c't kreeg de kans om een bezoekje te brengen aan Transmeta, al waar hij o.a. kreeg te zien hoe de geëmuleerde north bridge van de Transmeta TM5400 zonder booten van nieuwe Code Morphing Software werd voorzien. Verder schrijft hij dat de Transmeta TM5400 op 700MHz qua performance vergelijkbaar is met een PIII 500. De prestaties zijn afhankelijk van de effectiviteit waarmee x86 instructies door de code morphing software geoptimaliseerd kunnen worden:

The real news comes from a second article: A report from Transmeta headquarters. The famous Andreas Stiller visited them (as the first European journalist and the first one to be allowed to stay there for a whole day).

He got some news about LongRun (233-600Mhz in 5 steps, minimal distance is 33Mhz and 1.1-1.6V core voltage). TM5400 consumes 6W at most. The processor includes a north bridge which is partly BX-compatible. The north-bridge is also emulated. And it has interfaces for SDRAM and DDR SDRAM (2*133). This emulated north-bridge is an advantage. When Andreas was there, they encountered a small bug in the northbridge and uploaded a new Code Morphing Software (CMS) ON A RUNNING SYSTEM (he implies that the system was not rebooted or something to make the new CMS run).

Transmeta Chief Ditzel said he still has good contacts whith Boris Babaian (Elbrus E2K Designer) who was at transmetas HQ just a week before Andreas was there. He says, that the architecture of both processors differs a lot.

TM5400 will be produced in IBM-CMOS8s-copper and will be the first cpu to be produced that way.

Andreas brought performance info: TM5400 at 700Mhz is about as fast as P3-500, but not in Ziff-Davis-Winstone. The problem there is, that the benchmark often 'touches' routines just once. Hence, the dynamical optimization does not play a role there. ZD-labs promised to Ditzel, that the next version of Winbench will contain a more realistic distribution of recalled parts of code"

Heise.de meldt dat de komende generatie Mac planken met PC2100 DDR support uitgerust zal zijn. Apple gebruikt voor haar systemen een 'Unified Motherboard Architecture' waarbij de PowerMacs, Powerbooks, iMacs en iBooks dezelfde moederplaat delen:

Apple werde außerdem erstmals PC266-DDR-SDRAMs (Double Data Rate) und drei FireWire-Schnittstellen mit einer Bandbreite von jeweils 800 MByte/s (bisher 400 MByte/s) verwenden, heißt es in dem Bericht. Die MacUser geht davon aus, dass Apple Power-Mac-Modelle auf Basis dieses Boards zur Seybold Publishing Conference präsentiert, die im August in San Francisco stattfinden wird. Insider rechnen zu diesem Termin auch mit einem Multiprozessor-Mac. Apple kommentiert solche Spekulationen um künftige Modelle grundsätzlich nicht. It also illustrates better the point that DDR is up to 2.5x faster than Rambus PC800.

With the introduction of platform-specific multiprocessing modules and the Apache Portable Runtime, these platforms can now avoid using POSIX-emulation functions that are sometimes buggy and always hurt performance.

New API : The API for modules has changed significantly for 2.0. Many of the module-ordering problems from 1.3 should be gone. 2.0 does much of this automatically, and module ordering is now done per-hook to allow more flexibility. Also, new calls have been added that should allow modules to do more without requiring patching of the core Apache server.
