At the desktop-PC level, Micron is promoting the technology at an off-site location through invitation-only demonstrations of its Samurai chipset and motherboard. With DRAM makers already sampling PC200 and PC266 DDR SDRAM, the market is awaiting a companion chipset, and observers believe Via's Samurai license could position it as a credible supplier of the technology.Jeff Mailloux, DRAM marketing manager at Micron, Boise, Idaho, believes DDR chips will show up in commercial PC desktops in the first half of 2000. Micron has said it is demonstrating the Samurai only to advance DDR, not to get into the chipset business.
In related developments, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. will unveil its first DDR-enabled Athlon microprocessors at Comdex, and Apple Computer Inc. is said to be showing a DDR-based desktop, although sources said the demonstration is likely to take the form of a “backroom” prototype.
