In deze les van onze Kookcursus gaat gastdocent Daniel Rutter - chefkok van tweaketaria Dan's Data - downunder om ons kennis te laten maken met de Australische tweakkeuken, waarbij het experiment niet geschuwd wordt. We weten allemaal dat voor goed bakken en braden onze koperen of aluminium pannen van een geleidende laag moeten worden voorzien. Dit om een goede warmteoverdracht te verzorgen en zwartgeblakerde producten te voorkomen. Daniel nam de proef op de som en gooide beurtelings de volgende substanties in z'n 'pan': Siliconenvet, Arctic Silver 3, Arctic Alumina, Cooler Master PTK-001, Cooler Master HTK-001, Nanotherm, fluoridetandpasta, water (!) en het typisch Australische Vegemite (een soort sandwich spread).

Resultaat: Tandpasta, Vegemite en zelfs water blijken een betere warmtegeleidingscoëfficiënt te bezitten dan dure, exotisch samengestelde koelpasta's! Echter kennen deze substanties wat nadelen, die ze ongeschikt maken voor langdurig gebruik als koelpasta-vervangers. Tandpasta droogt uit, Vegemite bevat zout (corrosiegevaar) en water verdampt. De exotische koelpasta's bleken ook niet of nauwelijks beter dan normale prut. Dan's conclusie luidt dan ook als volgt:

Is fancy thermal goop as good as the manufacturers would like you to believe, and as various Junior Overclockers do believe? Nope.

Is it, therefore, a complete waste of money? Absolutely not.

Just be aware that it's not magic, and don't expect the most expensive stuff to work very much better than generic grease.

Microsoft heeft aangekondigd dat ze de source code van het Server Message Block (SMB) protocol vrij gaan geven. Het SMB protocol wordt door PC's die onder het Windows besturingssysteem draaien gebruikt om met elkaar te communiceren. Ook de source van een ander protocol, het Common Internet File System (CIFS) zal vrijgegeven worden, hoewel je daar wel een royalty-free license voor af zult moeten sluiten. De reden hierachter is vooral om de Europese Commissie tegenmoet te komen die met een onderzoek bezig zijn waarin ze stellen dat Microsoft code in hun besturingssystemen heeft ingebouwd die ervoor zorgt dat Windows machines beter met elkaar kunnen omgaan dan Windows met bijvoorbeeld Linux machines.

Microsoft Corp. plans to open up more of its proprietary source code to allow greater interoperability between different server operating systems and its Windows client and server operating systems. Microsoft spokesman Jim Desler told eWeek on Tuesday that the Redmond, Wash.-based software firm would release the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol later this summer to comply with the provisions of the proposed final settlement between it and the Department of Justice in that antitrust case.

Op de 22e april zal SuSE 8.0 uitkomen. Deze versie zal de 2.4.18 kernel bevatten en vergezeld worden door een drie-stappen installatiemethode. Deze installatiemethode is de eenvoudigste tot nu toe en zal de stap voor de Windowsgebruiker en n00bs nog gemakkelijker maken. Verder zal de grafische schil - KDE 3 - zijn debuut maken, terwijl eindelijk ook de professionele geluidskaarten zullen worden ondersteund met al hun kenmerken en facetten.

Tom's Hardware heeft een uitgebreide vergelijking van AMD's Athlon XP processor met de Pentium 4 processor van Intel online gezet. In de vergelijking is men met name geïnteresseerd in de performance van de nieuwe Athlon XP 2100+ processor ten opzichte van de Pentium 4. De Pentium 4 is getest op een Abit TH7II met de i850 chipset in combinatie met 256MB RDRAM (PC1066), terwijl de Athlon XP getest is op een Gigabyte GA-7VRXP met de KT333 chipset in combinatie met 256MB DDR SDRAM (PC2700).

Uit de test komt de Athlon XP 2100+ als duidelijke winnaar uit de bus. De XP 2100+ op 1,7GHz kan in de meeste applicaties de Pentium 4 op 2,2GHz goed bijbenen, terwijl in bepaalde niet-geoptimaliseerde software de XP 2100+ zelfs op het niveau van een Pentium 4 op 2,4GHz presteert:

The Athlon XP 2100+ was outperformed by the P4/2200 only when it came to 'office performance'. In some disciplines not based on optimized software, the Athlon XP 2100+ even reached the level of a Pentium 4 at 2.4 GHz, which will not be introduced until early April. Silicon Strategies meldt dat het HyperTransport consortium met 8 nieuwe leden is uitgebreid en nu uit 41 bedrijven bestaat. Het HyperTransport consortium heeft het promoten van de HyperTransport technologie tot doel. Met deze technologie kunnen chips tot 48 keer sneller communiceren dan met bestaande technologieën. De nieuwe leden ontvangen een royalty-vrije licentie voor HyperTransport en toegang tot het intellectuele eigendom van de technologie.

Eight new member companies have joined the HyperTransport Technology Consortium to promote the HyperTransport I/O link for high-speed communications between integrated circuits. The new members are: Hewlett-Packard, Hifn, NEC Electronics, NurLogic Design, Phoenix Technologies, SandCraft, Schlumberger Semiconductor Solutions, and Seaway Networks.

Hoewel ST heeft aangegeven te stoppen met PC graphics kon dat PowerVR er niet van weerhouden om de Kyro II SE videochip uit te brengen. De nieuwe chip draait op 200MHz, 25MHz sneller dan de originele Kyro II, en heeft ondersteuning voor EnT&L. In tegenstelling tot de hardwarematige aanpak van bedrijven zoals nVidia en ATi is EnT&L niets meer dan een driver-hack. Ook de andere toegevoegde features zijn volgens de nuchtere blik van Ace's Hardware niet meer dan termen voor nieuwe of minder nieuwe functies die in de drivers zijn aangepracht. Op de website van het Eindhovens Dagblad is een artikel verschenen waarin dieper op de nieuwste beeldschermtechnologie van Philips en E-Ink wordt ingegaan, namelijk het principe van "electronische inkt". Hierbij wordt een zwart-wit beeld gevormd door duizenden met electriciteit aangestuurde microcapsules. De beeldkwaliteit is ronduit goed te noemen, volgens het concern zelfs "beter dan een krant". Als hierbij het lage energiegebruik en het lage gewicht opgeteld wordt, kan geconcludeerd worden dat dit soort beeldschermen een goede aanvulling zijn op bijvoorbeeld mobiele telefoons en palmtops. Al eerder werd er bericht over het ontwikkelen van deze techniek, maar pas nu zijn er prototypes beschikbaar. Deze techniek is gevolg van een goede samenwerking tussen het in 1997 opgerichte E-Ink en Philips:

Philips werkt sinds vorig jaar februari samen met E Ink aan de ontwikkeling van de technologie. In juni hebben zij de eerste prototypes van de beeldschermen getoond. Gisteren hebben Philips en E Ink bekend gemaakt dat zij hun samenwerking voortzetten.

Zij hebben extra uitgaven aangekondigd voor de verdere ontwikkeling en het marktrijp maken van de elektronische inkt, die halverwege volgend jaar voltooid moet zijn. Philips zegt al in gesprek te zijn met diverse klanten, die interesse tonen voor de nieuwe beeldschermen. Behalve Philips hebben onder meer Motorola en Lucent een belang genomen in het veelbelovende E Ink, dat in 1997 is opgericht en zijn hoofdkantoor in Cambridge (Massachusetts) heeft.

X-Bit Labs heeft meer informatie te pakken weten te krijgen over de Abit AT7, het eerste Socket A moederbord in de gisteren aangekondigde MAX serie. Wie naar het plaatje kijkt snapt meteen hoe het de mensen van Abit is gelukt om zoveel chips te integreren; er zijn maar drie PCI slots aanwezig naast de standaard AGP4x gleuf. Natuurlijk neemt de behoefte aan vijf of zes PCI slots flink af omdat de plank 100Mbit netwerk, twee FireWire poorten, tien USB aansluitingen, zes IDE kanalen en 6-kanaals geluid met optische in- en uitgang aan boord heeft, maar toch zal het voor veel Tweakers even slikken zijn. Het bord zal ongeveer 225 euro gaan kosten.

X-Bit Labs meldt dat Abit op de CeBIT een nieuw server moederbord heeft gepresenteerd. Dit moederbord, gebaseerd op de AMD 760MPX chipset, is een vervolg op de eerdere plannen van het bedrijf om marktaandeel te verwerven in de markt van low-end servers. De specificaties van het moederbord zijn weinig verrassend: vier DIMM sloten, AGP Pro slot, drie 32-bit/33MHz PCI sloten, twee 64-bit/66MHz PCI sloten, vier USB poorten, onboard audio en een geïntegreerde ethernet adapter:

The mainboard will have capacities for processors overclocking (change of a multiplier, FSB frequency, Vcore and Vio) and will have a DualBIOS technology analogue. ABIT is going to present its Dual Socket A WA2A mainboard at the CeBIT show, although it is unlikely that the audience will be very surprised: the same mainboards will be presented by such companies as Iwill, EpoX, Chaintech, Gigabyte, MSI, ASUS and TYAN.

Linux-distributeur MandrakeSoft staat op het punt om versie 8.2 van Mandrake Linux uit te brengen. Ondanks goede reviews in de pers en de vele gebruikers van Mandrake ziet het bedrijf grote problemen op financieel gebied in de nabije toekomst. De kosten die gemaakt worden voor ontwikkeling en service worden op dit moment nog niet gedekt door de inkomsten. "We verwachten aan het eind van dit jaar break-even te kunnen draaien maar we kunnen de komende maanden niet in de huidige vorm doorgaan zonder drastisch te bezuinigen. Op de site van AMD is een pressrelease verschenen waarin wordt aangekondigd dat de eerste processoren met de Thoroughbred core eind deze maand op de markt zullen verschijnen. De Thoroughbred core is de eerste core van AMD die volgens een 0,13 micron procédé zal worden geproduceerd. Hierdoor wordt de die-size met 38 procent gereduceerd ten opzichte van de 'oude' Athlon XP's die op 0,18 micron zijn gefabriceerd. Helaas wordt de exacte release datum niet vermeld, evenals de kloksnelheid van de nieuwe Athlon XP's met Thoroughbred core:

At CeBIT, AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that it plans to begin shipping AMD Athlon™ XP processors codenamed 'Thoroughbred' based on .13 micron technology to customers later this month.

The move to state-of-the-art .13 process technology represents a significant evolution for the AMD Athlon processor family. With this transition, AMD expects its processors to deliver improved performance, lower power and smaller die sizes.

Overclockers Australia maakt melding van magnetische fans van Yen Sun Technology (Y. S. Tech). Deze fans worden niet aangedreven door een centrale motor, maar beschikken daarentegen over vier magneten op de hoeken. Hierdoor wordt op de eerste plaats de dode plek , die bij de standaardfans in het midden zit, opgeheven waardoor de airflow met 30 procent toeneemt en het afvoeren van de warmte met 15 procent. Bij DPReview is te lezen dat Minolta op de CeBIT een nieuwe ultra-compacte 4 Megapixel camera heeft aangekondigd: de Dimage F100. Het apparaat is 111mm breed, 52mm hoog, 32mm diep en weegt 185gram. Deze digitale camera is voorzien van 3x optische en 2,5x zoom en is de eerste consumentencamera met de Subject Tracking autofocus feature. Aan boord vinden we een 1,5" LCD-scherm en 16MB voor opslag via een SD/MMC kaartje. De camera kan voorzien worden van 2 AA NiMH batterijen of een CR-V3 Lithium accu. Alan Smith van AMDZone kreeg van Antec een SX840 midi-tower toegestuurd, en zag zijn kans schoon er een review van te maken. De SX840 is, zoals alle kasten van Antec, een echte kwaliteitskast, maar met een prijs van rond de 200 euro betaal je daar ook voor. Zoals uit de review blijkt, is deze kast van zo'n beetje alle denkbare gemakken voorzien. Hij beschikt over een 400W voeding van Antec zelf, een uitschuifbare mobo-tray, genoeg ruimte voor fans, en is erg netjes afgewerkt. Bovendien zijn de zijpanelen erg makkelijk open en dicht te doen, zodat je altijd snel bij je systeem kunt. Het enige minpunt dat Smith kan bedenken is het gewicht, want, hoewel daardoor erg robuust, is hij met zo'n 15 kilo klaar voor Big Dïet. Zijn uiteindelijke conclusie is echter uiterst positief:

After hearing so many glowing recommendations of Antec cases from friends and colleagues I knew I was in for a treat when I had the chance to review the SX840. Any negative points that can be brought up against the case are easily wiped away by the plethora of great features. This case creates a solid platform on which to build the best computer system you can dream up. Congrats to Antec for creating a great product.

Silicon Strategies schrijft dat STMicroelectronics van plan is IBM's spraakherkenningstechnologie in licentie te nemen en deze te integreren in multimedia-chips voor mobiele telefoons en andere draagbare apparaten die verbinding maken met het internet. Beide bedrijven hebben hiertoe een intentieverklaring getekend, waarin tevens staat dat zij samen zullen werken aan nieuwe spraakgestuurde producten en gezamelijk zullen vermarkten. Het gaat hierbij om IBM's ViaVoice speechsoftware, welke ST zal embedden in haar STA2000 ARM9 system-on-chip platforms. Het artikel meldt verder nog het volgende:

The company said it also plans to port IBM's Embedded ViaVoice technology to mobile multimedia platforms addressing automotive and audio applications. Terms of the agreement and licensing pact were not released.

"The emergence of Internet-enabled mobile terminals is one of the key forces that will drive growth in the high-tech industry over the next few years," said Aldo Romano, general manager of the Telecommunication and Peripherals/Automotive Groups at ST. "Cost effective and reliable voice technology will accelerate the introduction of these terminals by making them much easier to use, improving the human-machine interface with natural spoken commands."
