Anandtech heeft een review in elkaar getimmerd van het Abit SA6R moederbord. De SA6R is een i815E plankje met een RAID-controller aan boord en een Softmenu III BIOS, waarmee het voltage en de FSB getweaked kunnen worden. In de review wordt uitgebreid gekeken naar de features van het bord, verder worden er nog drie benchmarks gedaan om te kijken hoe dit bord het doet ten opzichte van een aantal vergelijkbare plankjes. Op een paar kleine layout probleempjes na is de SA6R een vrij smakelijk plankje, en krijgt een 7.5 als eindscore:

After a disappointing experience with the SE6, we were pleasantly surprised to see ABIT turn things around with the SA6R. It brings us not only the long waited SoftMenu III with all the ultimate BIOS tweaks, but also the Highpoint HPT370 Ultra ATA 100 RAID controller. ABIT has also worked very hard to improve the performance and stability of the board, and it definitely shows in our tests. Although the price of the board is a little bit high, with the performance and stability, the ABIT SA6R is still a very good contender.

Dit zal geen verrassing zijn voor de meeste mensen, maar toch heeft men vrij lang aangenomen dat de naam van Whistler uiteindelijk Windows.NET 1.0 zou worden. Blijkbaar vond Microsoft het oude vertrouwende jaartal in de titel van een OS toch beter, waarschijnlijk vooral vanwege de naamsbekendheid:

"Gates said that the next version of Windows, scheduled to be available in the second half of next year, will make the PC much simpler for consumers and business users alike, while featuring the rock-solid performance of Windows 2000 that businesses have relied on. He explained that cutting-edge hardware and software companies are excited and already planning for the Windows 2001 launch."

nVidia is druk bezig met het veroveren van nieuwe markten, naast de aankondiging van hun eerste mobiele chip komt vandaag ook het bericht dat ze een deal hebben gesloten met Sensaura, een Engels bedrijf gespecialiseerd in 3D audio:

Sensaura have welcomed the entry of NVIDIA into the PC audio marketplace and believe that their new products will significantly raise the capabilities and the performance of next generation PC audio. David Monteith, Managing Director of Sensaura, said ``We are delighted with this new partnership with NVIDIA who are widely acknowledged within the industry as leaders in the graphics chip market. The integration of Sensaura 3D Positional Audio onto their new audio processors will position NVIDIA as a leader in the new category of media and communication products''.

Sensaura's 3D Positional Audio en Virual Surround technologie wordt al gebruikt in kaarten van Guillemot, Yamaha, Diamond en Terratec, nVidia hoopt op deze manier snel naam te bouwen als fabrikant van audiochips.

Seagate heeft vandaag de Barracuda 180 aangekondigd. Deze Ultra160 SCSI harde schijf draait met 7200RPM rond en heeft 16MB cache aan boord, om een transferrate van maar liefst 47MB/s vol te kunnen houden. De opslagcapaciteit van 180GB maakt hem meteen ook de grootste ter wereld, wat natuurlijk fijn is om over op te scheppen als je er $2195 voor betaald hebt :

Already in its seventh generation, Seagate's Barracuda family is synonymous with unmatched quality and reliability, important factors when storing business-critical information. De schijf, die in het eerste kwartaal van 2001 op de markt komt, wordt geleverd met het 3D Defense systeem, wat staat voor Drive, Data en Diagnostic. Een speciale verpakking, error correction features en de SeaTools software zorgen ervoor dat de data op de schijf zo veilig mogelijk blijft.

Bij InfoWorld kunnen we lezen dat ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) de lijst van mogelijke nieuwe toplevel domeinen tot tien beperkt heeft. Er waren 191 domeinnamen voorgesteld door 44 organisaties. De nieuwe domeinen zijn hard nodig, omdat de huidige domeinen .com, .org en .net uitgeput raken. Volgende week wordt daadwerkelijk beslist welke toplevel domeinen erbij komen.

De Icann heeft de mogelijke toplevel domeinnamen beoordeeld op technische en financiële haalbaarheid. Uiteindelijk bleven .biz, .web, .nom, .per, .i, .name, .co-op, .union, .air en .geo over. Voorstellen als .tel voor telefoonmaatschappijen, .kids voor kindersites, .fin voor banken en .xxx voor pornosites zijn afgewezen. Over twee voorstellen, .museum en .health moet de Icann zich nog uitspreken.
Opvallend is dat er maar liefst vier toplevel domeinen tussenzitten die bedoeld zijn voor persoonlijke domeinnamen: .nom, .i, .name en .per. Aan sommige domeinen zit een restrictie vast. Alleen bedrijven, instellingen of personen die betrokken zijn bij de betreffende sector mogen een domeinnaam registreren. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn .co-op voor coöperaties, .union voor vakbonden en .air voor luchtvaartmaatschappijen.

Het is de bedoeling dat de nieuwe toplevel domeinnamen medio volgend jaar gebruikt kunnen worden.

Eerder konden we al lezen dat er een conflict onstaan is over het mogelijke nieuw .web domein. Het bedrijf Image Online Design zou namelijk het alleenrecht op dit domein verliezen als het voorstel van de ICANN doorgaat.

WebWereld komt met het bericht dat onze zo geliefde kabelprovider Casema per 15 december beperkingen gaat opleggen voor het gebruik van de internetdiensten via de kabel. Het gaat hierbij om de abonnementen die Casema onder de naam Wanadoo aanbiedt. De beperkingen houden in dat Casema maatregelen neemt tegen overbelasting van het netwerk door het beperken van de snelheid en het dataverkeer van de abonnee.

Voor Wanadoo Basic en Plus gelden limieten van 333 Megabytes per maand upstream en 1000 Megabytes per maand downstream. De premium-klanten hebben met respectievelijk 1333 en 4000 Megabytes iets meer speelruimte. Maar zij betalen dan ook 99,50 per maand voor hun abonnement. Basic kost bijna 60 gulden, terwijl de kabelinternetter voor Plus 79,50 kwijt is.

Als de klant de beperkingen niet in acht neemt, heeft Casema het recht 'de toegang tot de Casema Internet Diensten (tijdelijk) te beperken of aan de klant te ontzeggen'.

Volgens woordvoerder Dirk Spaans van Casema gaat het alleen om gevallen waar 'excessief' gebruikt wordt gemaakt van de dienst. "Over het algemeen zullen we zeer ruimhartig omgaan bij overtredingen. Als je iets boven de grens uitkomt, krijg je echt niet gelijk een extra rekening in de bus", aldus Spaans.

"Het gaat ons nadrukkelijk alleen om de grootverbruikers. Als mensen zeg maar 10 GB per maand downloaden, is dat een probleem", stelt Spaans. Deze grootverbruikers krijgen dan eerst een waarschuwing. Pas als het gedrag niet wordt bijgesteld, volgen andere stappen als snelheidsbeperkingen of een extra rekening.

Tegenwoordig heeft iedereen het maar makkelijk, met point and click, plug and play, drag and drop en nog meer van die trucjes is het een relatief gezien een eitje om een computer op een grafische manier te bedienen. Vroeger lag dat heel anders, nog niet zo heel lang geleden moest men met de hand ponskaarten invoeren om iets voor elkaar te krijgen. Een grote sprong voorwaarts in het gebruiksgemak van computers was de komst van operating systems.

Systemlogic heeft daarom een interessant artikel gemaakt waarin de evolutie van operating systemen wordt bekeken. Het gaat over de allereerste primitieve operating systems, de generatie die we nu gebruiken met de features die er in de loop van de tijd zijn bijgekomen, en tenslotte nog een stukje over de toekomst:

As you can see, these early operating systems paved the way for the next generation of operating systems. I basically classify the next generation as those used around the mid 1970s to the present. After the mainframe systems, the client-server architecture started to emerge. Basically, each client is like the terminal in a mainframe system, except that it was a PC and could run it's own programs. The server basically acted as the control unit and would be in charge of managing user accounts, allocating disk space to each user, and running server programs which can be accessed by all or only certain users.

[...] Linux is another OS that shows a large amount of future promise. Linux is definitely moving towards the consumer market with the recent distributions. With each new distribution, installing and configuring Linux gets easier and easier. Also, application support has grown significantly. More importantly, Linux is a much more stable OS than Windows, but it's still a ways from being a real user friendly system. With companies such as Corel, RedHat, and Mandrake continually improving each distribution, I wouldn't be surprised to see Linux being a standard option on PCs sometime in the future.

In de Verenigde Staten zijn de afgelopen weken minstens tien grote ondernemingen getroffen door het computervirus Navidad, wat Spaans voor kerstmis is. Gelukkig is het virus niet heel erg schadelijk.

Het virus W32/Navidad@M is een zogenaamde 'worm', die net zoals 'I Love You' en 'Melissa' via de e-mailclient Outlook van een besmette computer zichzelf vermenigvuldigt:

De argeloze ontvanger die de bijlage aanklikt, krijgt de Spaanstalige tekst "Druk nooit op deze knop" voorgeschoteld. Wie deze raad in de wind slaat, leest vervolgens: "Feliz Navidad (Gelukkig kerstfeest, red.). Helaas bent u bezweken voor de verleiding en zult u uw computer kwijtraken." In de zogenaamde 'systemtray' in de taakbalk van Windows wordt naast het klokje een blauw, oogvormig pictogram geplaatst.

[...] De vermoedelijke herkomst van het virus is Zuid-Amerika. Veel van de besmette e-mails komen uit Brazilië en Cuba. Volgens een anonieme beveiligingsexpert, geciteerd door persbureau Associated Press, zijn onder andere chipfabrikant Intel en oliemaatschappij Exxon Mobil door Navidad getroffen.

Cameron Johnson van TweakTown heeft de tijd genomen om een roundup te maken van drie koelers die moeten voorkomen dat je socket A processor oververhit raakt. De geteste koelers zijn: de Thermaltake Super Orb, de Alpha PAL Socket A en de ArctiCooler Agilent. De prestaties van de koelers liggen heel dicht bij elkaar, maar de Alpha PAL SA is toch de winnaar:

To do our testing we used a ABIT KT7 RAID motherboard with a unlocked AMD Athlon 700MHz running 1.85v at 850MHz (8.5x100MHz). We used a CompuNurse Thermal Probe to take readings instead of using the ABIT's onboard thermal sensor located in the center of the Socket A underneath the CPU. The OS we used was Windows 2000 Professional and Q3A for 1 hour for our stress test...

We can see that the Alpha is a winner but not by much, while the Alpha is a good cooler I would have expected something bigger and better from Alpha especially for a Socket 462 that generates more heat the FC-PGA and PPGA.

Conclusion

Again we here at TweakTown have received some very nice coolers to review and all are recommended by us for use on Socket A Processors. No surprises with regards to the winner, its hard to find a cooler that beats an Alpha cooler. The Super orb was we found to be the only cooler that wouldn't fit onto the ABIT KT7 RAID, while the ArctiCooler did require modifications it did fit on, the Super orb was too big and pushed against the capacitors too much for my liking's.

Emaker Taiwan heeft wat nieuwe dingen te vertellen over de mobile Athlon, beweert Ace's Hardware (ik heb het niet gecontroleerd ). Volgens het artikel zijn er op dit moment al mobile Athlons geleverd aan de grote OEMs voor test-doeleinden. In het vorige kwartaal waren de designs van moederborden voor de mobile Athlon al klaar, maar er moest nog gewacht worden tot de processoren ook af waren:

Reportedly, Toshiba, IBM, Acer, and others began testing ALi's M1647 chipset back in Q3, but they weren't able to qualify designs with the mobile Athlon because AMD had yet to supply any chips. As a result, they worked with the desktop chip, which has delayed the actual testing of power dissipation and so on.

Compal, een Taiwanese notebookfabrikant, beweert dat hun eerste notebooks gebaseerd op de mobile Athlon al in het eerste kwartaal van 2001 verwacht kunnen worden.

3D Alpha heeft een review online gekieperd van de Atlas 10K II, Quantum's overbekende 10.000rpm SCSI schijf. De geteste harddisk heeft een grootte van 18,4GB en wordt vergeleken met een Seagate Cheetah 18XL, die qua specificaties ongeveer gelijk is aan de Quantum.

Uit alle benchmarks blijkt dat de Quantum sneller is dan de Seagate. Alleen bij de CPU Utilization benchmark neemt de Cheetah een kleine voorsprong, maar deze is zo gering dat hij niet in verhouding staat met de snelheidswinst die de Atlas 10K II oplevert. Dan blijft er nog één overweging over: de prijs. Quantum's schijf is $40 duurder dan de Seagate (uit onze eigen pricewatch blijkt dat het verschil hier rond de Fl. 125,- ligt), maar is dan ook een stuk sneller. De reviewer durft geen algemeen advies te geven en raadt aan om goed na te denken over het bedrag dat je wil spenderen aan een harde schijf:

So we've seen the Atlas 10k II rise above the Cheetah 18XL in the comparison and now it's time to decide what's better for the money. As with everything, this is the most important factor to consider. Not everyone has the extra one hundred bucks to get that extra edge of performance, and even if someone does, it may not be worth it in proportion to the performance gain over a competitor's drive.

Both of these drives are from very well-respected companies with a reputation for making excellent equipment. While one is faster than the other, one thing is for sure: They are both made to perform and last a long, long time. So with these things in mind, you almost have to consider cost-effectiveness before making this kind of a purchase. After all, Ultra160 SCSI equipment is not cheap stuff. The cheapest Atlas 10k II I was able to find on PriceWatch ran for $385, whereas the cheapest Cheetah 18XL ran for $345. When you compare these prices you are definitely going to find it hard to choose whether or not the extra $40 is worth spending. The performance gains are significant if you choose to buy an Atlas 10k II, but you also have to keep your wallet size in mind as well.

The Gear-Grip Pro is VERY easy to use, VERY affordable and goes a LONG way to make the transportation of your PC easier. The straps adjust to a very snug fit around the case. It didn't have the feel that it was about to break or come undone turning my pride and joy computer into an expensive 500 piece jig-saw puzzle. Let's face it, the industry has made great strides in making computers faster - but not a whole lot of progress in making them lighter. Until now, it's been up to us to devise the method to move our PC's from one locale to another. Het is nu mogelijk om heel gemakkelijk skins van jezelf te maken voor spellen als Quake III Arena en Counter Strike. 3Q Inc. maakt 'pasfoto-hokjes' waarin dit gebeurt. Met drie camera's wordt er in een fractie van een seconde een 3D model van je gemaakt. Daarna heb je nog even de tijd om dingen als littekens toe te voegen. Als je klaar bent krijg je voor $25 een CD-ROM met je foto. Models kosten $5 per spel extra. Helaas staat het hokje alleen nog maar in de VS .

To have their digitized alter ego created, a person sits inside a converted photo booth that houses three precisely synchronized cameras. A technique known as Digital Surface Photogrammetry (DSP) is then engaged, which involves a random, non-laser light pattern projected on the subject's face to capture an image in as little as 8 milliseconds. Creators of the technique say speed is of the essence in order to reduce any slight movements that could negatively impact quality.

The resolution allows for 2,000 polygons, which can be modified depending on the game engine. The surface texture is 24-bit color, and the 3-D file format is available in Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) and game file formats -- all rendered in about 10 seconds. Users then have a few minutes to add features such as scars or to change their hairstyle.

Direct na de aankondiging van de Celeron 733 en 766MHz heeft Sharky Extreme een review erover op de lijn gemikt. De features van de Celeron zijn ongewijzigd gebleven. De hoofdvraag is dan ook of de verhoogde kloksnelheid ze aantrekkelijker maakt dan de Durons, die uitgerust zijn met een veel hogere geheugenbandbreedte. Het antwoord daarop is een duidelijke nee, zoals je bijvoorbeeld kunt zien aan deze SysMark 2000 grafiek:

De hoge multipliers (respectievelijk 11 en 11.5) van de nieuwe Celerons in combinatie met de kleine hoeveelheid L1 cache werken duidelijk niet in het voordeel van de nieuwe Celerons. De conclusie is dan ook dat je beter kunt wachten op Celerons met een 100MHz FSB, of zelf die feature kunt toevoegen aan een ouder model :

So there you have it, folks. The Celeron 766MHz just isn't much faster than the Celeron 700MHz, while being more expensive. It's also considerably slower than the Duron in most benchmarks. All these factors together show us that the Celeron 766MHz just isn't a very good deal. In January, the Celeron's performance should be improved, but right now, we see no reason to buy a Celeron 766MHz. For those that do want to buy a Celeron, are comfortable with overclocking and can locate one of the much-sought-after units, we recommend the 566MHz version instead.

Intel heeft vandaag twee snellere Celeron II's uitgebracht, draaiend op 733 en 766MHz. Beide processors worden geproduceerd op een 0,18micron procédé. De prijs van de Celeron 733 bedraag $112 en de Celeron 766 kost 170 dollar, bij levering in stapeltjes van 1000 stuks. Intel Corp. will announce on Monday its fastest-ever Celeron microprocessors that are slated for personal computers costing less than $1,000 and cited research claiming that it has 94 percent of the U.S. retail market for cheap desktop PCs.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel is introducing two Celeron chips, one running at 766 megahertz and the other at 733 megahertz. Both use Intel's 0.18 micron manufacturing process, which allows the company to fit more transistors onto a single chip and to get more of them out of a single silicon wafer.

All versions of Whistler Beta 1 include a new feature called Dynamic Update that is invoked in the early stages of Setup (Figure).
