Topeka, KS - High school sophomore Brett Tyson was suspended today after teachers learned he may be using PHP.

"A teacher overheard him say that he was using PHP, and as part of our Zero-Tolerance policy against drug use, he was immediately suspended. No questions asked," said Principal Clyde Thurlow. "We're not quite sure what PHP is, but we suspect it may be a derivative of PCP, or maybe a new designer drug like GHB."

Parents are frightened by the discovery of this new menace in their children's school, and are demanding the school do something. "We heard that he found out about PHP at school on the internet. There may even be a PHP web ring operating on school grounds," said irate parent Carol Blessing. "School is supposed to be teaching our kids how to read and write. Not about dangerous drugs like PHP."

In response to parental demands the school has reconfigured its internet WatchDog software to block access to all internet sites mentioning PHP. Officials say this should prevent any other students from falling prey like Brett Tyson did. They have also stepped up locker searches and brought in drug sniffing dogs.

Just a quick mention, both these devices bring the temperature after the torture tests back down to idle within 2 minutes (usually less). That's pretty darn fast.

So, what's the bottom line? Should you pick one up? I'd say yes. If you're not into the whole cutting 120mm blow holes into your case thing, this is a very viable solution. If you plan to overclock your video card, then think of this product highly.

Though the this design is not earth shattering, it is a good idea. At $24.95 for the regular 2Cool PC and $34.95 for the plus unit, this could be considered pricey buy some. The Plus unit's 92mm fan moves 50 CFM, that's 8 more cubic feet per minute than the 42 CFM fan in the non-plus unit. If you're not willing to shell out $10 for the 8 extra CFM, then stick with the 2Cool PC. If you have a huge case (server case), I'd go ahead an pay for the 8 extra CFM.

Heise Online bericht dat Intel komende zomer een Universal Plug & Play Development Kit voor Linux zal releasen. Een onderzoek van World Information Technology and Service Alliance (WITSA) heeft uitgewezen dat inmiddels 260 miljoen computers zijn aangesloten op het alles omvattende internet. De grootste groei voltrekt zich momenteel in Oost Europa en Latijns Amerika, hoewel er in vergelijking met de VS erg weinig omzet wordt gedraaid in de IT markten van deze regio's. Die WITSA wagt an dieser Stelle die Prognose, dass sich diese Lücke bald schliessen wird und nennt als Beispiele China und Brasilien, deren Märkte seit geraumer Zeit wesentlich stärker wachsen als der Durchschnitt.

The Register schrijft dat 330.000 Hotmail gebruikers een week lang zonder email hebben gezeten nadat een Hotmail server op zijn / haar mondje was gevallen. Nadat de server weer was opgelapt bleek dat veel data zoek was gemaakt. Een aantal zakelijke gebruikers klaagt over misgelopen omzet door het falen van de _gratis_ email dienst...

It looks like Microsoft, Hotmail's owner-operator, put the repaired server back to work before fully completing data recovery routines. The company says that all data should be recovered, at some point.

It is easy to imagine the frustration of the Hotmail users (a small proportion of the 66 million account holders), especially those foolhardy enough to use the account as their primary or sole email address.

The Register meldt dat Toshiba afgelopen nacht een overeenkomst heeft bereikt met Rambus over het gebruik van door Rambus Inc. gepanteerde DDR en SDRAM(!) technologie.

Dit voorval lijkt samen te hangen met een rechtszaak die Rambus Inc. eerder dit jaar tegen Hitachi opende. Hitachi zou in hun SDRAM produkten en SH-4 processors ongeoorloofd gebruik maken van Rambus technologie. Volgens Hitachi stond deze technologie destijds ter discussie bij de JEDEC, het clubje geheugenfabrikanten dat open standaarden ontwikkelt voor de geheugen industrie. Rambus was toen nog lid van de JEDEC en heeft de technologie volgens Hitachi tegen de regels van de JEDEC zelf gepatenteerd.

Hitachi kreeg steun van andere geheugenfabrikanten in de rechtszaak tegen Rambus. Het beslissing van Toshiba om te zwichten voor de druk van Rambus Inc. zou ook de positie van Hitachi kunnen verzwakken:

Under the terms of the agreement, Toshiba will license high speed DDR and SDRAM memory interfaces invented by Rambus, and will pay through the nose for the privilege of so-doing. A press release from Rambus said: "The royalty rates are greater than the RDRAM compatible rates...and include royalties for SDRAM and for controllers that directly interface with SDRAM, as well as a license (sic) fee for the entire agreement."

[...] Didn't think that Rambus had the rights to such things? Cast your mind back to stories we ran earlier this year, particularly a court case still pending between Hitachi and Rambus. Rambus claims that DDR memory that is being produced or will be produced by Hitachi infringe its patents. Hitachi counterclaims that Rambus is infringing the Sherman anti-trust case.

[...] Other members of the Jedec memory trade association (of which Rambus was, once, a member), will be a-quivering in their boots at this move.

Sources said that Rambus wants triple damages from companies that infringe its DDR and SDRAM patents. The Dramurai, now that Toshiba has crumbled, would seem to be in some disarray.

Volgens een onderzoek van bureau Yankelovich zou het downloaden van MP3 files de cd-verkoop in de winkel juist stimuleren, zo schrijft Nu.nl. Het blijft natuurlijk gissen of dit over het algemeen echt zo is; vorige maand meldde de Amerikaanse muziek industrie nog een groot verlies vanwege MP3 leechers.

De onderzoeksresultaten werden gisteren belicht in een artikel van The Wall Street Journal. In de studie werden 16.903 personen ondervraagd in de leeftijdscategorie 13 tot 39.

Tweederde van de ondervraagden beweerde na het downloaden van muziek nog altijd bereid te zijn de cd in de winkel te kopen. Slechts zes procent zei dat hun koopgedrag door mp3's op het internet in de negatieve zin was beïnvloed.

Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd in opdracht van The Digital Media Association. Die organisatie vertegenwoordigt bedrijven werkzaam rond video en muziek op het internet.

Bernie schrijft dat de wereld weer een stap dichter bij een instant messaging standaard is: AOL, de grootste partij die niet mee wilde werken aan een standaard heeft vandaag een voorstel voor een standaard bij de Internet Engineering Task Force gedropt :

The submission comes on the final day for companies to hand their proposals for open instant messaging standards to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the industry's standards body. The IETF allows any company to submit a version for the standards. IETF will review the proposals and eventually choose one.

The move is significant given AOL's dominance in instant messaging and its lead in the marketplace.

AOL has waged battles with rival instant messenger services that have tried tapping into AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). It has fought Microsoft, Prodigy, CMGI's iCast and Tribal Voice, and start-up Odigo after those services began communicating with AIM users without consent.

Bij WebWereld kun je lezen dat Bill Gates ook dit jaar weer bovenaan de ranglijst staat van rijkste mannen ter wereld. Billy zag zijn vermogen ten opzichte van vorig jaar wel flink afnemen: met 30 miljard, van 90 miljard naar 60 miljard. Runner-up in de lijst van dit jaar is overigens Oracle-baas Larry Ellison. Hij moet met 47 miljard zien rond te komen.

Vorig jaar piekte Microsoft op 120 dollar, vorige maand werd een dieptepunt van 60 dollar bereikt. Ellison daarentegen wordt steeds rijker. In november moet deze MegaView Pro 55 monitor op de markt komen, voor een verwachte verkoopprijs van 15.000 dollar. De monitor is XGA compatible en ondersteunt ook S-VHS, NTSC, PAL en SECAM video formaten:

nVidia's about to roll out another card. The company, already a favorite of hardcore games with its GeForce and GeForce 2 cards, will court a more mainstream audience later this month. On Wednesday, June 28th, nVidia will introduce a new GPU, with which it hopes to capture a broader user base. nVidia, of course, will have a separate shot at earning casual- and console-gamer loyalties next year, when it supplies the graphics component of Microsoft's X-Box.

The idea's a simple one: Bring the GeForce to the masses. Sources tell us that the GPU will offer GeForce-level graphics in a much more affordable card, most likely with a little less power the the GeForce currently on store shelves. We'll have a full report for you next week.

Om gebruik te kunnen maken van de volle 1GB zul je wel ergens een plank moeten vinden die met dit geheugen overweg kan, aangezien de meeste borden niet verder gaan dan 512MB per socket:

Linux marktleider Red Hat Software heeft meevallende verliescijfers bekend gemaakt, meldt News.com. Door analisten werd een verlies van 4 dollarcent per aandeel verwacht, maar dit bleek uiteindelijk neer te komen op 2 ct per aandeel. Voor volgend jaar hoopt het bedrijf voor het eerst winst te maken:

Linux leader Red Hat Software reported narrower-than-expected losses for its past quarter, evidence that it is on track to turn a profit next year, company executives said.

Red Hat, which markets software and services based on the Linux operating system, said that losses for the first fiscal quarter 2001, excluding extraordinary events, came to $2.5 million, or 2 cents a share. Analysts expected the North Carolina company to report losses of 4 cents a share.

Revenues, meanwhile, came to $16 million, a 95 percent increase from revenues of $8.2 million in the first fiscal quarter of 2000. The figure represents an increase of 22 percent over revenues of $13.1 million in the company's fourth quarter.

Microsoft heeft gisteren de derde versie gereleased van zijn Windows CE embedded operating system voor handhelds, set-top dozen en andere klein grut. Windows CE 3.0 heeft betere real-time support met verbetere multimedia mogelijkheden, ondersteunt meer talen en heeft een verhoogde 'componentization', wat betekent dat de onderdelen van het OS eenvoudig door developers in stukken gehakt kan worden. Microsoft hoopt met CE 3.0 meer voet aan wal te krijgen in de booming markt voor zogenaamde 'smart appliances'. Om dit streven wat extra kracht bij te zetten werd de prijs van het OSje met 50% verlaagd:

Windows CE, which is also used in Microsoft's Pocket PC handheld device, has been slow to gain footing in the embedded market, which requires more stability and reliability than typical consumer devices or PCs. CE has been criticized for its instability and lack of true real-time capabilities, two areas Microsoft says have been improved with the third version.

"We've taken a very significant step forward in providing real-time support," which becomes necessary in medical equipment and other time-critical systems, Veghte said. "It is not the fastest real-time operating system in the marketplace, but it is good enough for 95 percent of the market."

Microsoft announced today that in addition to cutting the price of Windows CE, it is simplifying the pricing model to attract more developers. The software maker did not disclose licensing fees.

Onze nationale trots Philips laat weten dat het zich heeft aangesloten bij de Bluetooth Special Interest Group, een clubje fanatiekelingen die zich bezig houden met de ontwikkeling van de veelbelovende Bluetooth standaard voor draadloze communicatie. Momenteel zijn Boonstra & kornuiten al actief als voorzitter van de Audio/Video Working Group, waar ook Ericsson, Nokia, Sony en Toshiba in deelnemen. Philips zal zich vooral toeleggen op de ontwikkeling van specificaties voor het gebruik van Bluetooth in hifi en video spullen:

Bluetooth was initially aimed at connecting mobile and computing products without the use of wires. Ruud van Bokhorst, Bluetooth Program Manager for Philips Consumer Electronics says:

“As a result of the mobile phone and PC/notebook applications Bluetooth is likely to attain very high volumes within a short period of time. The resulting cost projection makes it an ideal wireless technology for the wider consumer electronics market. The fact that Philips is a major player in that market, in combination with Philips Semiconductor being pre-eminent in the components market, puts us in a world-beating position for Bluetooth.”

As a precursor to this statement Philips recently demonstrated world’s first Bluetooth wireless audio speakers at CeBIT 2000, only a ‘taster’ of things to come. Bluetooth is a specification for a small form-factor, low cost radio solution providing links between mobile phones, mobile computers and other portable handheld devices, and connectivity to the internet. It has more than 1500 adopter companies.

One of my sources indicated that the KX266 chipset, which will support DDR, should be in volume production by July or August. This is a bit earlier than I was being told even as recently as March. Officially, AMD and VIA are saying that DDR chipsets will be available in "the 2nd half", but there are hints that the problems with DRDRAM have caused some of the manufacturers to accelerate plans, so a mid-Q3 launch does not appear to be out of the question.[break]Van chipset-ontwerper SiS hoeven we voorlopig niets te verwachten, ook al waren er berichten over een comeback:[/break]It was expected that SiS would also enter the race very soon, however they made one very serious tactical mistake. Though they have been using TSM to manufacture their chipsets, they decided that they would need their own Fab to ensure product availability. This apparently pissed off TSM, who promptly voided their contract with SiS. It seems that TSM prefers customers that are completely fabless, and decided to give the capacity to someone else (possibly VIA). SiS is now moving forward with their plans to build the new fab, but in the meantime most of their plans have been pushed back as they struggle to find a way to fulfill their commitments and move forward with their plans. Unfortunately for most of us, it will likely be at least several weeks before there can be any confirmation of this rumor.
