We end up with a product that is very similar to the competition. The Leadtek does not perform any better or any worse than any other GeForce2 based card. The card performed flawlessly in all our tests, and overclocked very well. However, I'm reluctant to refer to a good overclock as a "pro" for Leadtek since there is no guarantee that the GPU cores on one brand card will be any better than anyone else's.

While the easy overclock and general stability of the card helped to keep it above the lower scoring Asus V7700, the lack of a software bundle and relatively high price prevents the WinFast from attaining a higher score than the others. Lack of retail shelf presence will no doubt affect the US sales of this card, but those familiar with the Leadtek name will have no problem with purchasing one, and they should be a snap to find online.

This card really does scream for a fast system. Overall you can find 32MB GTS cards for roughly about $60-80 more than a GeForce DDR. The cards might perform the same at low resolutions, but the GeForce 2 pulls away at high-res. Considering it's hit and miss, the Leadtek WinFast GeForce2 GTS has earned a place right in the middle in the pack, not better, and not worse. If you have your heart set on getting a GeForce 2 card, you won't be disappointed with the Leadtek.

Bij AppleInsider zijn heel wat geruchten te vinden met betrekking tot mogelijke opvolgers van de iMac. De nieuwe iMac zou een 17" scherm ingebouwd hebben, draaien op een G4 en zou volgende maand (19 juli) al uitkomen. Ook zou er een versie in ontwikkeling zijn, de 'iBox' geheten, waarbij de iBox alleen een basis zou zijn voor de computer waar je dan de rest mooi op kan schuiven. Je kan dan zelfs kiezen welke grootte beeldscherm je erbij wil. Wow .

There have been rumors that a new iMac industrial design, rumored to go by the code-named 'iBox,' may make up the foundation of these new iMac models, though sources have been unable to positively confirm this piece of gossip.

The iBox has been said by some to consist of no more than the base of an iMac computer, allowing users to select their choice of 'slide-on,' attachable, candy colored displays, which are said to include two 15" displays: one CRT and one LCD, and a large screen 17" CRT short-neck display. These displays are said to attach to the iMac cablelessly (though there will be some form of attachment).

Eerder vandaag was in dit nieuwsbericht te lezen dat WebWereld rapporteerde dat de nieuwe mobile P3 600MHz speciaal voor mini-notebooks slechts één Watt zou gebruiken. Zeker leuk om te kunnen zeggen dat je een ATA-100 hardeschijf hebt, alleen voor een performance verschil moet je waarschijnlijk wel even goed zoeken: het verschil tussen ATA-33 en ATA-66 was namelijk al minimaal.

Before we look into the future of ISAs in general and the x86 ISA in specific, it'll first be necessary define exactly what an ISA is--a project that'll require us to look back into the past to the origins of the ISA as an architectural concept.

Back in the early days of computing, manufacturers didn't build a whole line of software-compatible computer systems where each system was aimed at a different price/performance point. Instead, each individual computer system was kind of like today's game console--programmers wrote directly to the machine's unique hardware so that a program written for one machine would run neither on competing machines nor on other machines from within the manufacturer's own company. Just like N64 games won't run on an old NES or a Playstation, programs written for one circa 1960 machine wouldn't run on any machine but that one particular product from that one particular manufacturer. The code was fitted to the hardware like a key fits a lock.

The problems this posed are obvious. Every time a new machine came out, software developers had to start from scratch. You couldn't reuse code, and programmers had to learn the intricacies of each new piece of hardware in order to code for it. This cost quite a bit of time and money, making software development a very, very expensive undertaking.

Wat wel nieuw is, is het nieuws dat er een Pentium III tussen komt te zitten die een energieverbruik van 1 watt gaat krijgen. Deze claim vindt ik hoogst twijfelachtig aangezien 10 watt ongeveer het getal is wat je bij de zuinigste Intel CPU moet zetten, maar als het waar is, is het zeker leuk en krijgt de Crusoë een stevige concurrent:

De nieuwe Intel-processors zijn, net als de Transmeta-chips, zeer geschikt voor draagbare computers. Vanwege de diversiteit in de notebookmarkt brengt Intel voor de verschillende typen computer ook verschillende processors uit.

Voor twee categorieën, 'full-size' en 'thin- en light-' computers brengt Intel een 750MHz Pentium III en twee Celeron processors op 650 en 600MHz. Transmeta kondigde vorige week een samenwerking aan met America Online/Gateway. De joint venture gaat internet-computers bouwen die draaien op Linux en zijn voorzien van de Crusoë-processor. Dat het bedrijf een lichte voorkeur heeft voor Linux als besturingssysteem is niet vreemd: Transmeta's bekendste werknemer is Linux-vader Linus Torvalds.

A3-D schrijft dat er weer een nieuwe stepping van coppermines aan zit te komen. De cC0 stepping moet de core van de coppermine met 5% verkleinen en wat foutjes verbeteren. Misschien is dit ook de stepping die de maximum snelheid van de coppermine van 1 GHz naar 1,2 GHz kan brengen, een getal dat Intel vaak heeft genoemd als maximaal haalbaar voor de coppermine :

The Register meldt dat AMD voorlopig Slot A Athlons blijft produceren, zodat mobofabrikanten de mogelijkheid krijgen om hun voorraden met KX133 en Irongate borden aan de markt kwijt te raken:

Last week, we reported from the Computex show in Taiwan that up to a million motherboards using the KX, rather than the KT-133 Via chipset were lying a mouldering in Taiwanese warehouses, after AMD introduced its Socket A platform.

But today, a senior AMD representative from Europe said that his firm would guarantee it will continue to manufacture Slot A chips so that its mobo customers don't end up with useless and unsaleable gear.

Vooralsnog lijken alleen de laag geklokte Thunderbirds goed te functioneren op KX133 borden. Het zal mij daarom niet verbazen wanneer de produktie van Slot A Athlons beperkt blijft tot de lager geklokte versies (thanks VHware voor de tip).
