De machines zijn vooral bedoeld voor mensen die voor niet te veel geld een leuke internet-PC willen hebben die ze ook nog eens met goed fatsoen in de woonkamer kunnen zetten. Wat dat betreft zal het wel lukken, maar voor de gemiddelde tweaker is er waarschijnlijk weinig eer te behalen

Computer makers are going design-happy with their latest offerings, seeking to simplify computing with a creative PC chassis, bare-bones features, and low prices. Three of these new PCs--the Compaq Presario EZ2700, the Compaq iPaq, and the HP e-Vectra--all have futuristic cases in common but little else. The EZ2700, like the rest of the Presario line, is aimed at novice users who need a home system with an easy overall setup. Despite the not-so-veiled reference to the consumer-focused Apple iMac, the iPaq is much more of a business machine. This network box comes stripped down to the essentials needed for a typical office environment. Compaq believes that if you're buying 20--or 200--machines for a fully networked company, you shouldn't spend money on extras that will never get used, such as modems. And the HP e-Vectra measures smaller than almost any PC we've seen, especially for a corporate box. Sound like smart ideas?
