Santana schrijft dat een maffe chinees een stukje heeft geschreven hoe je ervoor kan zorgen dat je minder last krijgt van EMI (electro magnetical interference) bij je SDRAM, blijkbaar een probleem als je op fsb's hoger dan 150 gaat draaien .

Om de electro magnetische storingen tegen te gaan bouwt hij een koperen shield (wordt ook gebruikt bij RDRAM) om het reepje ram heen wat ervoor moet zorgen dat ie het chippie nog wat verder kan tweaken :

The PC133-SDRAM we use is working under 100-133MHz, and do not need shielding and thermal management to work properly. But, from a standard EMI point of view, any signal with a bandwidth over 20~30MHz will give EMI interferences, especially when the conducting wire has metal tips --- this will deteriorate the performance, not only giving out signal, but also receiving stronger EMI. The situation get worse with increasing frequency and will be unavoidable at 100MHz.

The EMI with mess up with the original signal pulses by mixing and modulation, and make new EMI. If EMI induced pulses are stronger than signal pulses, the signal will be suppressed -- one example is the poorly shielded computer will crash if you use a cell phone near by. When our OCers use FSB upto 150MHz FSB (the frequency range that call be called as OC), we are stepping into the "trouble zone" : 150MHz has huge amount of EMI, like from transmitters for pagers. Below is a picture of a pager working at 150.725MHz (the pager does not give EMI, it is the transmitter station).

[...] To add a shield on the RAM module is similar to the 80pins in the ATA66 cable --- to make the system more stable. As far as I know, Appollon (another OCer) in ShangHai is doing the same test and study. I want to remind you that this change will not modify the memory from ground up and can not even be called as reasonable design., so please think over before you do it. Especially, you run the risk of shorting your computer if you did not do a good job.

Dit is nou wat ze noemen het echte tweaken... toch?

Bij ZDNet staat een klein artikeltje waarin wordt gemeld dat onderzoekers aan een universiteit in de Amerikaanse staat Colombia duidelijke weer eens verbanden hebben gelegd tussen geweld en het spelen van gewelddadige games a'la Quake en Unreal. Volgens het onderzoek is er zelfs een duidelijk verband te leggen tussen het opleidingsniveau en de hoeveelheid tijd die er aan deze games wordt besteed. Hieronder een plak:

In een onderzoek werden 227 studenten onderzocht op hun agressiviteit. Naarmate personen meer gewelddadige spelletjes hadden gespeeld tijdens hun lagereschooltijd en daarna, hoe agressiever de personen bleken te zijn. Zelfs op lange termijn zouden effecten meetbaar zijn. Ook bleek er een duidelijk verband gelegd te kunnen worden tussen het opleidingsniveau en de hoeveelheid tijd die er gemiddeld aan gewelddadige spelletjes werd besteed. Hoe meer tijd er besteed werd aan gewelddadige spelletjes hoe lager uiteindelijk het behaalde opleidingsniveau. In een tweede studie waarin 210 studenten werden getest, speelde de ene helft een gewelddadig spel (Wolfenstein 3D) terwijl de andere helft een niet-gewelddadig videospel mocht spelen (Myst). Vervolgens moesten de studenten een medestudent straffen met een stoot uit een sirene. De studenten die Wolfenstein hadden gespeeld lieten de sirene beduidend langer loeien.

[CoSD]Headbanger informeerde ons over de KX133 mobo roundup bij BXBoards. Andrew testte in totaal 6 plankjes: de Abit KA7, Asus K7V, Epox 7KXA, Gigabyte GA-7VX, Tyan Trinity K7 en de AOpen AK72. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie voor je:

If overclocking is the priority, there can only one winner here, and that is the Abit KA7. It was the only board in these tests to even POST at 780/120, and while other boards had 120Mhz, none were able to use it with either of our test Athlons (0.25 and 0.18 micron). The Epox 7KXA and Gigabyte GA-7VX do very well in the overclocked tests, and were easily able to run the Athlon @ 745/115. Below 750Mhz, voltage tweaks made no difference to stabilty - hardly surprising as our 0.18u Athlon has a 750Mhz core. Most dissapointing was the Asus K7V (I was not expecting much from the Tyan as an overclocker!!), as it seems to have all the right attributes as an overclocking board. However, it could run neither of our Athlons past 695/107 - anything more and the board (rather gracefully it must be said), reset itself to a 100Mhz clock.

Speed-wise at 650Mhz the Asus K7V is a clear winner at both standard and 133Mhz memory clocks. Asus have done really well in eaking out more performance from thier boards in the past than their competitors, and it comes as no surprise to see them walking off with the non-overclocked speed award. Its just a shame the board doesn't like bus overclocking....

Niels de Koning van 0800 Internet Nieuws schrijft: "Superweb oprichter Martijn Eier gaat opnieuw een flat-rate provider oprichten bij de VNU. Dat heeft WebWereld vernomen uit 'bronnen binnen Superweb'":

Eier geeft aan toe te zijn aan iets nieuws: "Iets opzetten vind ik leuk, daarna gaat het snel vervelen." Bovendien is Superweb niet helemaal geworden wat hij ervan had verwacht. "Je kunt stellen dat het niet echt een succes is geworden, alhoewel het nu wat beter gaat." Superweb werd bekend als eerste provider waarbij tegen een vast bedrag kon worden geïnternet, deze primeur werd echter al snel overschaduwd door het slecht functioneren van de dienst.

Het is nog niet duidelijk wanneer Eier bij zijn nieuwe werkgever kan beginnen. "Snel, als we het tenminste eens kunnen worden."

De nieuwe provider zal niet alleen moeten gaan concurreren met Superweb, maar ook met partijen als LibertySurf (helemaal gratis internetten, maar alleen op bepaalde tijden), QuickOnline (surfen tegen een vast bedrag per maand) en de nog te lanceren diensten van Wish en Cistron, die vergevorderde plannen voor flat-rate internet hebben.

De mannen van Planet GeForce hebben wat ervaringen gepost over het overclocken van hun GeForce2 GTS kaart. De resultaten zijn zeer indrukwekkend: de core haalt makkelijk 240MHz (40MHz boven spec) en het DDR geheugen liet 375MHz toe. Can you say 960 MegaPixels? :

Been doing alot of overclocking tests on the GeForce2 GTS reference board (see our review here) now that things are somewhat relaxed here at 'da Planet, and have been able to get rock-solid stability at 240 MHz for the core and 375 MHz for the memory =) Using some quick grade school math, the fillrate of this card is pulling:

• 4 x 240 = 960 megapixels/second
• 8 x 240 = 1920 megatexels/second

At one point I was able to get the core to 249 MHz, just 8 megatexels shy of 2000. I figure with some added cooling and we should be able to make it; already gearing up to order a peltier setup. Ahh, the joys of solid-state cooling =) I'll be posting a big@ss overclocking article on the card _very_ soon.

Nu.nl schrijft dat er begin dit jaar bijna 600 miljoen e-mailadressen bestonden op deze aardkloot, een heel respectabel getal :

NEW YORK - Het aantal e-mailadressen in de wereld bedroeg begin dit jaar 569 miljoen. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van het Amerikaanse bedrijf Messaging Online. Volgens het bureau zal het aantal over twee jaar de één miljard adressen passeren. Het aantal mailaccounts steeg vorig jaar met ruim 83 procent. Ieder jaar is dat groeipercentage hoger.

In 1990 waren er nog maar 15 miljoen adressen, terwijl pas vijf jaar later de 100 miljoen werd bereikt. De meeste mailaccounts (bijna 60 procent) hebben een Amerikaanse gebruiker. In de rest van de wereld groeit het aantal adressen echter sneller dan in de VS. Niet elk emailadres staat overigens gelijk aan een gebruiker. Veel mensen hebben meerdere mailaccounts, bijvoorbeeld een privé en een voor op het werk.

Of dit echt veel is, is de vraag: als je bedenkt dat veel mensen meerdere adressen hebben en er ruim 6 miljard mensen hier rondlopen valt het nog aardig tegen.

De nerds bij Ars Technica hebben een review klaarliggen van het excellente KA7 moederbord van Abit. Hieronder een stukkie over de stabiliteit van de plank:

Stability of this board was excellent. I ran it through some of the most vicious testing that I've used on a motherboard in the past, and had no problems. Performance of the board was interesting to say the least. When the memory is configured properly, it sails (and I would highly recommend that you get some PC133 SDRAM for the board as you can see the performance certainly is worth it). I had been looking forward to the KX133 chipset from VIA for quite a while, and I must say I'm impressed with the performance that can be reaped from such a stable system. As relates the ABIT offering explicitly, I have to say that it is an excellent combination of performance and stability which manages to have enough of a variety of features on it to stay attractive. ABIT has a chance to make a serious impact on the Athlon market (much like they have done in the Intel market).

The big question that you're asking yourself now is "is it worth it"? It's twice the price of what you can get an equivalent AMD chipset board for, so is it really worth your hard-earned scratch? In short, yes. The memory performance of the board far exceeds AMD 750 boards that don't have the Super-Bypass function, and even if the board does support Super Bypass, I'm hard-pressed to recommend anyone go out and spend money on "old" technology when there's something newer and more feature-filled readily available. Super-bypass still doesn't achieve this level of result, and as we've seen in the past, even the non-Super-bypass ASUS K7M can dominate. IMHO going that direction would be tantamount to buying a LX chipset motherboard right after the BX came out. Sure, it's more money... but Athlon's are so cheap now you should be able to justify the extra expenditure. Just remember the results above: a slightly faster Athlon on a weaker board won't do ya right.

According to a roadmap we have seen, Samuel/Samuel 2 uses a WinChip C5 core, comes in a Socket 370 format, has 128K of level one cache, zero to 64K of level two cache, and supports system buses of between 66-133MHz.

Speeds for Samuel/Samuel 2 will be 500MHz, 533MHz, 550MHz, 600MHz, 650MHz, 700MHz, 750MHz and 800MHz.

The up-and-coming Ezra is a different kettle of fish altogether, somewhat reminiscent of Australian creature the platypus.

According to the roadmap, Ezra will come in clock speeds of 750MHz, 800MHz, 850MHz, and 900MHz+. It will use the CX core, support Socket 370 and Socket 417, 128K of level one cache, 128K of level two cache, a 266MHz front side bus and SSE.

[...] Meanwhile, the Via Cyrix III, formerly called Joshua, is slated for release in June, but some questions remain over how viable it will be given that Intel with its Celeron and AMD with its Duron are involved in a seriously head-banging pricewar.

Unlike Samuel and Ezra, the Cyrix III uses the PR rating rather than a MHZ rating.

Howard King, de advocaat die Napster-aanklagers Dr. Dre en Metallica vertegenwoordigt, laat ons even weten dat individuele Napster gebruikers ook kunnen worden aangepakt. Volgens King is het mogelijk dat mensen met harde schijven vol MP3's waar copyright op berust kunnen worden vervolgd wegens diefstal. King sluit echter niet uit dat ook de individuele gebruikers (vaak Amerikaanse studenten op campussen, waar snelle internetverbindingen zijn) door hem zullen worden aangepakt. "Als blijkt dat er mensen zijn met grote harde schijven die duizenden songs downloaden waarop copyright berust, dan kunnen we ook hen vervolgen in verband met diefstal", aldus King tegenover ZDNet.

Technieken om specifieke Napster-gebruikers te traceren zijn nog niet getest, maar volgens netwerkbeheerders is dit theoretisch heel goed mogelijk, bijvoorbeeld door gebruik te maken van de interne logfiles van Napster. Het betekent wel enorm veel werk.

Studenten lijken zich vooralsnog niet echt zorgen te maken. Velen denken dat dit alles alleen bedoeld is als stemmingmakerij, een boete kunnen ze immers toch niet betalen. Anderen nemen hun toevlucht tot een van de Napster-klonen. Een programma als Gnutella heeft bovendien het voordeel dat het wél anoniem zou zijn.

Kritiek is er ook op het eventuele vervolgen van studenten. "Het is alsof je druggebruikers aanpakt in plaats van drugkartels", aldus een copyright-advocaat tegenover CNet. Napster zal het overigens niet eens zijn met de vergelijking van drugkartel. [break] Het kan echter ook anders. Limp Bizkit heeft minder moeite met Napsterende tweakers. Vanaf 4 juli geven ze namelijk gratis concerten genaamd '"Limpdependence" die geheel door Napster wordt gesponsord: [/break] Rock group Limp Bizkit has announced a month's worth of completely free concerts starting on July 4th, dubbed "Limpdependence." Lead singer Fred Durst told the press regarding Napster's involvement, "We could care less about the older generation's need to do business as usual. We care more about what our fans want, and our fans want music on the Internet."

Napster will support tour costs such as travel, venue rentals, and lights, giving the band close to $2 million.

Just weeks after being attacked by artists such as Metallica and Dr. Dre, this move by Napster has come as quite a shock to many in the music industry. Proving that not everyone is afraid of the MP3-sharing proram, Durst stated Napster was "an amazing way to market and promote music." Indirectly critizicing those artists following Howard King and his attack on Napster, Durst noted, "I would think the only people worried about that are people that are really worried about their bank accounts."

No specific dates or locations have been set for the tour as of yet, however the band told the press they would play multiple dates at 3,000- to 5,000-seat venues in Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, Boston, New York, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco, Seattle and Los Angeles. Cypress Hill will be promoting their alubm "Skull and Bones", which hits stores today, and Limp Bizkit will be premeiring tracks from their upcoming, "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water," due out in August.

The Register schrijft dat nVidia op de WinHEC 2000 een aantal grote OEM deals bekend gemaakt. Ondermeer Dell, Gateway, Hewlett Packard, Creative Labs, MicronPC en Elsa gaan produkten met de GeForce2 GPU op de markt brengen:

A massive splash of press releases from graphics chip firm Nvidia at the current WinHEC 2000 conference in New Orleans has revealed the extent of the firm's egregious assault on the graphics market.

It has secured a raft of design wins with top PC OEMs -- including the Dell Corporation -- to use its GeForce2 GTS graphic processing units (GPUs) in its products.

And that is not the least of it, according to Nvidia. Gateway, HP, Compaq, Creative Labs, MicronPC, Elsa and a whole load of other PC manufacturers committed to the platform.

3dfx lijkt bij OEMs nog steeds weinig populair te zijn. De grootste concurrentie kan nVidia waarschijnlijk uit de hoek van ATi verwachten, die met de Radeon 256 nu ook een high-end videokaart heeft. Ik kan me voorstellen dat de single chip videokaarten van nVidia en ATi dankzij een betere price/performance voor OEMs interessanter zijn dan de brute Voodoo Scalable Architecture van 3dfx...

AMD meldt met grote blijheid dat de nVidia GeForce2 geoptimaliseerd is voor het AMD platform. Basicly wil dat zeggen dat er 3DNow! support door de GeForce drivers is gemixt. Eerdere liet iXBT Labs zien dat Athlon gebruikers met de recente Detonator 5.14 drivers een behoorlijk performance sprongetje kunnen verwachten:

News.com heeft een artikeltje gepost over de strategiën van AMD en Intel, die beide bedrijven vandaag in New York zullen bespreken. Intel regelt daar vandaag een bijeenkomst voor analisten, terwijl AMD hetzelfde doet voor zijn aandeelhouders. News.com verwacht dat de Thunderbird in juni op een kloksnelheid van 1,25GHz geïntroduceerd. De Spitfire zou vanwege de grotere die-size mogelijk duurder kunnen worden dan de Celeron:

AMD's meeting, to be held at the St. Regis Hotel at 7:30 a.m. PT, is expected to provide details about upcoming generations of Athlons. In June, the company is slated to release Thunderbird, a high-performance version of the Athlon, as well as Spitfire, a version for sub-$1,000 PCs.

Toward the end of the year, the company will unveil Mustang, for multiprocessor servers, and Corvette, a mobile version of Athlon that used to be grouped in the Mustang category.

Thunderbird will contain several improvements over the current Athlon. Rap artist Dr. Dre sued MP3-swapping firm Napster today, adding a new layer of legal woes to the already besieged company.

But this time, the stakes are being raised: Dr. Dre also is targeting students at universities who are using the Napster software to download MP3 files, putting individual music listeners into the legal line of fire.

[...] Dr. Dre demanded last week that Napster remove his work from its service. But the company refused, saying it could only remove individual users identified as copyright violators.

In response, the artist is asking that the court shut down Napster and award damages of $100,000 per illegally copied work. Neoseeker heeft een review gemaakt van de 3D COOL Laptop Cooler, een handig coolertje wat je in een PCMCIA slot kan stoppen om te zorgen dat je CPU geen stabiliteits problemen krijgt door (te veel) hitte :

Now some may question the need for a laptop cooler, since it is nigh impossible to overclock the mobile CPU, and there really aren't any expansion cards to install that might add extra heat to the laptop. The fact of the matter is that laptops run HOT. There are several reasons for this: the CPU and mainboard components, the confined space of the laptop's components, the compact hard drive, and the batteries. Each of these factors affect both the external and internal heat of the portable computer, which results in three things: discomfort for the user (because his lap is being seared by the heated base of the unit, or because the wrist rest area is heating up and getting at the hands), possible instability of the system leading to lockups or crashes, and increased potential for failure of the hard drive.

[...] If you are like us, and are concerned about the heat generated by your notebook - especially if that heat affects your system stability, then this is definitely something you want to pick up. In our case, the laptop was a heat demon without any extra cooling, and this was an inconvenience as well as an actual stability concern. The Laptop Cooler didn't perform any miracles, but it did tone down the heat noticeably. It couldn't keep the entire laptop cool, but with the superheated batteries that power modern notebooks, this was inevitable.

insane komt ons deze vroege morgen melden dat er weer wat nieuwe detonator drivers te vinden zijn, Reactor Critical heeft de 5.16 Detonator drivers voor windows 9x online heeft gezet :

Wat er veranderd is en verbeterd is niet bekend, maar je kan de drivers in iedergeval hier downloaden.

De plannen voor de megaflush zijn GEWIJZIGD. In plaats van 4 mei, wordt iedereen verzocht om op vrijdag 5 mei te flushen! Er is na overleg op ons irc kanaal #DPC door o.a. de proxy beheerders het besluit genomen om in plaats van een Megaflush, 3 megaflushes achter elkaar te houden.
