Reliable sources close to Transmeta's plans say that the firm is likely to be able to introduce a chip in its Crusoe family running at 1GHz by the end of the year, and consuming only a paltry four to five watts.

That contrasts with a member of Intel's mobile Pentium III family, a 900MHz processor, which will also be available by year-end, but which pushes the power consumption boat up to 22 watts.

The arrival of a 1GHz Transmeta part would significantly alter the balance of power in the lucrative notebook market. There are Transmeta devices now available in WebPads and the like, but their price -- typically around $750 or so -- militates against their widespread acceptance.[break]* Ten tweede hebben ze wat minder leuk nieuws: AMD heeft problemen met de stroomconsumptie van de Corvette, hun CPU voor de mobile markt. Dit is slecht nieuws aangezien een laag stroomverbruik de eerste vereiste is van een mobile processor:[/break]Meanwhile, the same sources suggest that AMD is still having considerable difficulties moving its K7 (Athlon) family into the mobile space, with power consumption the chief difficulty. AMD has made inroads into Intel's share of the retail notebook market, but needs to produce top-end chips running at high speeds and at low power to capture the more profitable corporate business.

Rome UP-301 MP3 player review

Rome UP-301 Mp3 Player
The Rome Mp3 player comes in a shape of a casette tape. A simple novelty cover? No way. It serves a definite purpose. The Rome mp3 player is shaped in the form of a casette because it IS a casette, or at least a virtual one. Using technology similar to what the 'casette adaptors' for CD players uses, it emulates a casette and thus plays like one in ANY standard tape player. Yes, even your car, which is perhaps the main purpose of this player. But the Rome Mp3 player is also a standalone player, and has an earphone jack which allows you to plug in earphones (included) and listen to music on the go. It makes for a perfect ultra-light portable mp3 player.

[...] While the Rome Mp3 player is certainly a very nice player, if you are looking to purchase one of these I recommend you sit tight and wait for the 'second-generation' Rome mp3 players. The one that got me interested was the UP-321 unit. Among the new features is a slot for additional flash memory, a USB Connector port (instead of the slow parallel port connector), a LCD remote control, and a cigarette plug adaptor for power in automobiles.

If you can't wait, however, the Rome mp3 player (UP-301) is available now and will set you back $199.95. The price is one of my concerns about the unit. An equivalent 'normal' unit, say a Diamond Rio 300, costs around $150. As I mentioned earlier one can simply purchase a casette adaptor to play mp3s off a regular unit in a car, so it's up to you to decide. Considering the cost of a casette adaptor, is an extra $30-$40 more for a self-contained unit worth it?

Tom's Hardware Guide i815 review

Intel i815 Solano chipset (klein) I would have loved to congratulate Intel for the development of i815, but the fact that BX133 is still faster in the majority of benchmarks leaves me unsatisfied. I still don't see any sensible reason why Solano should not be able to reach BX133-scores or even outperform its two-year-old predecessor. Solano's 'underperformance' is raising some serious questions. Was Intel unable to make i815 as fast as 440BX or did Intel simply not want to make it too fast? I am sure that we won't ever get an honest answer to this question, so I leave it up to you to answer this question for yourself.

After I pointed out my disapproval of i815's performance in comparison with BX133, I still have to praise it for leaving its Rambus-brothers behind in the majority of benchmarks. It may be that the overclockers amongst us are disappointed about Solano, but all the ones out there, who were afraid of running BX beyond spec, have now found their perfect solution. Solano is faster and cheaper than i820 or i840 and it beats VIA's Apollo Pro133A PC133 chipset too, so it deserves to be called 'Best Coppermine Solution', taking this title away from the Apollo Pro133A. The question now is how expensive i815-platforms will be. After all you have to pay for an integrated graphics solution, regardless if you want to use it or not. Motherboards with VIA's Apollo Pro 133A will remain the most cost effective choice, but i815-platforms will be able to deliver superior performance at a price that is significantly lower than i820 and i840.

Thanks DiGiSTORM_ voor de tip.

Microsoft onkent 3dfx / Xbox geruchten

I just spotted over at BrokenPixel that they had got a word from Don Coyner of Microsoft, that the rumor about 3dfx/Gigapixel stepping in the XBox was/is a rumor. Here's the jam: BP - Don, can you tell us anything in regard to the 3dfx & Microsoft rumor?

Don Coyner: I guess I'd add this to the extensive list of groundless rumors we've all read about Xbox over the past 9 months. Well, never be too sure..

JC over één jaar Athlon

AMD Athlon logo 15 GOOD, 7 (and a half, if you count that mini-one) BAD. Not a bad ratio, and the numbers make the situation worse than it actually is. Most of the BAD issues are either minor ones or are in the process of being (or have already been) canceled out by a GOOD. AMD is positioned as the leader of their primary industry from a technical perspective, with their only true disadvantage being having only one full Fab and one partial Fab, while the competition has many such plants. Lack of compiler support was a critical issue, but this is being alleviated.

Even with most of the GOODs discarded, AMD is guaranteed an incredibly profitable and fruitful year 2000. There is only one uncertainty that could cause this health to falter: Willamette. Intel's upcoming competition for the Athlon, Willamette promises little in the way of added performance-per-clock, but does seem to have the potential for incredibly high frequency ramping. If AMD can more or less keep up to Willamette MHz, they will likely remain profitable and healthy for several years more. On the other hand, if Intel's processor starts gapping above AMD's maximum offering, then AMD's profits will slowly dwindle. Because of their FLASH memory business explosion (another GOOD, but not included in the assessment, because it has little to do with the Dirk Dinner), AMD has a good chance of sustaining profit in even the worst case scenarios. But AMD would be wise to ramp up R&D spending a lot if Willamette proves formidable: Their upcoming K8/Sledgehammer must be at least as good in 32-bit x86 and x87 stuff.

Jim Clark (Netscape) Microsoft already has won a near-stranglehold on the Web browser market, Clark noted. Allow this to continue for a few years, while the court case is appealed and the breakup is administered, and this market lock will become stronger.

That raises the potential for a huge new industry of Web services companies, from applications to entertainment, all using IE as a base for their products. Allow Microsoft to put its Web browser in the same company as its own Web services, such as Microsoft Network, and the courts are simply laying the groundwork for more market abuses, Clark warned.

"This would give (Microsoft's applications company) an enormous amount of power," he said.

The former Netscape chief is preparing the argument for a tentative U.S. Senate hearing on the subject, he said.

“We want to make a big splash in the market, and Taiwan is going to be part of it,” Transmeta's chief executive, David R. Ditzel, told EBN during an interview this in Taipei. “We see a lot of excitement in Taiwan.”

Quanta Computer Inc. and First International Computer Inc. are among the 20 companies building Transmeta's Crusoe processors into their newest laptops and Internet Appliance (IA) products, according to Transmeta.

[...] Some 60% of notebooks sold by the world's top 10 PC manufacturers, including Dell Computer Corp., IBM, and NEC Corp., were made in Taiwan last year, up from 45% in 1998, he said.

Transmeta's office in Taiwan is the company's largest outside the United States, Ditzel said, adding that the Taipei branch employs a team of 10 people in sales, marketing, and technical support. Transmeta has 250 employees worldwide.

[...] Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. and United Microelectronics Corp., the two largest pure-play foundries in the world, are testing Crusoe for Transmeta, according to Ditzel. “2001 would be appropriate for us” as a date to begin using their foundries, he said. The company now uses IBM's fab to produce the Crusoe processors.

Coppermine T speculaties: 0,13micron PIII?

We have a mysterious Coppermine T (or Coppermine LV) appearing in Q4. Could it be what Tom was talking about? .13u Coppermine? That would extend the life of P6 another year. This new core (shring is seems to be taking over Celeron as well. It shows Willamette 423 giving way to Willamette 479. I wonder if it contains an integrated Northbridge. Integrated northbridge would make it competitive, but it also means commiting to a memory interface.

It looks like the Almador is in fact a chipset for Coppermine (DDR?). His pretty much follows Tom's opinnion.

Tulloch chipse seems to be for Willamette 479. If the different pincount of a CPU needs a new chipset, it would lend some credibility to my hupothesis that Willamette 479 will have built in Northbridge.

Nvidia GeForce2 GTS Shootout

Basically it comes down to this. If you're looking for the best overall GeForce2 card, stick with the Guillemot Prophet II. If your wallet's a little tighter, the Asus is the obvious choice due to it's lower price and killer bundle. Both cards will perform the same, you won't see a visual speed difference between different brands of GeForce2 cards. Just as we expected, we came to the same conclusion as our previous GeForce SDR and GeForce DDR roundups. A GeForce2 is a GeForce2 is a GeForce2. No matter what brand you get, you'll get the same framerates all around. Extra features like TV-out, DVD software, or extra cooling capabilities should be the only factors in determining what card you should drop your cash on.

There we had the chance to see the presentation, which included some breathtaking demonstrations of a fully functional pre-production card based on ATi's Radeon. At the very end of the press event, we asked Mr. Knight to run a Quake3:Arena timedemo, but sadly the program - running demo001 at 1024x768 with high quality settings - crashed after 7-8 seconds. But frame rates were quite amazing (with an average of 60-70 fps), which is rather fine from a pre-production alpha board with beta drivers.

However, the demo rig (Pentium III/750, 256M SDRAM, ATi Radeon pre-production alpha) could cope quite well with the NV15DEMO, without any slowdowns or lockups!

FiringSquad over werking computer geheugens

With the release of Windows 95, something new truly occurred in consumer computing. The Intel 386, the first 32-bit processor had been released nearly 10 years earlier, and it took that long to develop a true, mainstream 32-bit protected mode operating system that was able to harness the power of that processor, and fully exploit the RAM. Up until this point, only specific software programs took advantage of protected mode, including some of the more advanced games of the time. Long time users will remember a small program called "DOS4GW.EXE", this program was responsible for switching the processor to protected mode operation while maintaining all current real mode operations, then when the application finished running, the system could switch back to real mode operation.[break]En nog een stukje over het ons aller bekende DDR SDRAM:[/break]DDR SDRAM is a new hit on the market, so new in fact that we have yet to see mainboards that can support the use of DDR SDRAM as main memory. Up until this point, all memories and system buses have used single rate clocking to transfer data. There are three segments of a clock cycle: the rising edge, the level, and the falling edge. Current single data rate memory uses only the rising edge of the pulse to transfer data because the system is not able to transition fast enough to reliably use both edges of the pulse to transfer data. In DDR memory, both the rising and falling edge of the pulse is used to transfer information. This gives us an effective doubling of bandwidth available. With single data rate memory, the only way we would have achieved that same level of bandwidth improvement would have been to double the clock frequency of the memory. This means that 100Mhz of DDR memory is as effective as 200Mhz of SDR memory. This translates into another quantum leap in memory speeds, since we have not only sped up the memory, but also DOUBLED its speed! Normally, improvements in technology are made in small leaps, so a doubling of memory bandwidth can be accurately stated as being a most excellent improvement. DDR SDRAM has already found its way into the newest generation of graphics accelerators, most notably on video cards based on NVIDIA's GeForce 256 GPU unit, and will soon be supported for use as main system memory.

The second surprise pleased fewer: Hardly a KT133-Board was production-ready. Some manufacturers spoke of bug in the chip record and from this resulting delays with the distribution. Others became more concrete and acknowledged that the KT133 runs unstably, if it is equipped with three PC133-Speichermodulen - particularly with three different -. Some saw the causes in the current supply, others in the BIOS, and again different wanted to have solved these problems, without wanting to give to us however Samples. And VIA already the memory interface had limited opposite the KX133 something, by now are possible instead of eight only six memory banks. Some manufacturers announced besides doubts about VIAs Produkionskapazitaeten and nevertheless some delivery bottlenecks feared due to the high demand. They are in each case naturally not concerned, since one ranks among the Top5 of the VIA friends - altogether must have VIA therefore at least 20 Top5-Freunde...

As the further reason for the delays in the KT development many manufacturers complained that AMD had supplied them only very insufficiently with test copies of the new processors Thunderbird and Duron. Perhaps there was quite little to therefore see on the Main board statuses Thunderbird demos: Or two test copies needed the development departments probably many more urgently, than that one would have shown them one week long to the Computex.

Tom's Computex 2000 verslag deel 2

You might not be too familiar with RioWorks right now, but there's a very good chance that this name will soon be established amongst the well-known motherboard makers in the world.

RioWorks merged with the large OEM supplier Arima last year, which made some 1.2 billion dollars revenue in 1999 with their server and workstation solutions. Therefore RioWorks is acting from a rather healthy financial background.

Paul Shay, who's in charge of RioWorks has got big plans. He wants to establish his company as the number one motherboard provider for dual-processor platforms. He is not afraid of the world's toughest markets in Japan and Germany, where people have particularly high quality expectations. I was rather impressed by MR. Shay's visions, who is not interested in providing cheap stuff, but top quality products. Basically he is planning to replace the Supermicros and Tyans from the past and become the Asus of the dual-CPU motherboard arena.

Slot A Thunderbird op Abit KA7

A 115MHz Front Side Bus speed, which the KA7-100 had seemed perfectly happy with when using an older Athlon, would turn this 700 into a 805MHz CPU.

And so it did. No voltage boosting, no other tweaks required. A nice clean Windows boot, and a stable computer. Compared with an old-model 800MHz Athlon, the Thunderbird again level-pegged for synthetic benchmarks, and scored a narrow but repeatable win for real-world performance.

At 120MHz FSB, for 840MHz core speed, Windows started but wasn't stable. Bumping up the CPU voltage from the default 1.7V to 1.75 cured the problem.

Setting the KA7's Pull-Up and Drive Strengths to 2 and 4 respectively didn't seem to have much effect on anything. The CPU ran OK at 840MHz (120MHz FSB) whether or not the logic settings had been changed, and 875MHz (125MHz FSB) was unattainable with any logic or voltage setting. Windows would start at 125MHz, but would perform a cranio-rectal inversion after a few minutes. 840MHz seemed perfectly stable, though; at this speed, the Thunderbird is easily the equal of a genuine 850MHz Athlon, costing more than twice as much.

MSI K7T Pro review

I love that this board has 6 PCI slots and no ISA slots. Also the bios adjustable core voltage, IO voltage, and bus speed settings are also a big plus.

The software bundle is also nice as it has many useful utilities and some Norton software to boot.

The stability of the board was also very good during my testing. The manual included was also very helpful. MSI also does a good job on bios updating, so hopefully the performance and features will improve.

[...] The MSI K7TPro is a great first Socket A board which is an excellent follow up to the K7Pro. It would make a solid choice for anyone building a Socket A system that wants to have plenty of PCI slots and some over clocking features.
