SUNNYVALE, CA--NOVEMBER 16, 1998--AMD today announced that Acer Laboratories Inc. (ALi) and VIA Technologies plan to deliver optimized, high-performance chipsets designed to support AMD's seventh-generation AMD-K7™ processor. AMD also plans to provide these chipset vendors with validation resources to enhance the compatibility and robust functionality of their chipset solutions.
"ALi's and VIA's announced plans to design and produce chipsets for the AMD-K7 processor is good news not only for AMD but also for the entire computing industry," said S. Atiq Raza, AMD co-chief operating officer and chief technical officer. "The combination of AMD's forthcoming seventh-generation processor and third-party chipsets compatible with the Alpha™ EV6 bus is planned to provide manufacturers of desktop PCs, workstations, and servers with exceptional performance."
"Next-generation processors, such as the new AMD-K7 processor design, from alternative CPU suppliers like AMD can open the door for third-party innovation," said Dr. Chin Wu, president of ALi. "For ALi, the AMD-K7 represents an extraordinary opportunity to innovate at the leading-edge of high-performance chipset design and to be among the first infrastructure suppliers to catch the seventh wave of microprocessor architectures."
"We welcome the opportunity to develop advanced chipset solutions for the AMD-K7 processor," said Wen-Chi Chen, president and CEO of VIA Technologies. "Our decision to support AMD's seventh-generation microprocessor is a natural outgrowth of our longstanding relationship with AMD. We believe that the AMD-K7 processor and optimized chipset products from VIA can set the pace for seventh-generation computing platforms."
About the AMD-K7™ Processor
The AMD-K7 processor with 3DNow!™ technology is a Microsoft® Windows® compatible, seventh-generation design featuring a deeply pipelined, nine-issue superscalar microarchitecture optimized for high clock frequency; a superscalar pipelined floating point unit; 128KB of on-chip level one (L1) cache; a programmable high-performance backside L2 cache interface; and a 200 MHz Alpha EV6 compatible system bus interface with support for scalable multiprocessing. The AMD-K7 processor is slated for introduction in the first half of 1999 and is planned to operate at clock frequencies greater than 500 MHz. A PII mainborts socket convertor and bios patch will also become available this summer.
