Overclocking Manilla heeft een review klaar van een Slot-1 Pentium III 700 processor die ze uiteraard hebben getest op tweakbaarheid. Met behulp van een Alpha P3126 cooler en een Abit BE6-II mobo op 143MHz bussnelheid trok de CPU 1001MHz :

At 145 (1015Mhz.), it was a no-go. I upped the voltage to 1.7V, and sure enough, I get into Windows. It was, however, still a tad unstable getting rounding errors in Prime95 so I upped the voltage some more to 1.75V. This time, I could run most of my benchmarks but still had trouble with Prime95 crapping out after about an hour. Another thing I noticed is that the AGP bus was already under strain. 3DMark2000 had some troubles completing it's runs in a "sometimes go, sometimes no" exchange.

I tried going for 146Mhz. on the Abit BE6-II but the AGP went nuts, sending me back to the desktop as soon as I start anything 3D, but let me run most of my benchmarks. Clocking it back down to 144 resolved my AGP woes but still gave me Prime95 rounding errors no matter what voltage I try. I could play games for hours on though. It appears that the 143 Mhz. bus setting (1001Mhz.) is the sweetspot for this processor since that got rid of all my overclocking troubles and allows me to use the default core voltage of 1.65V. But being the kinda overclocker I am, I always clock down to the next lower setting, which in this case is 142 (994Mhz.). Not bad. Not bad at all.

To conclude this overclocker's mini-review, let me just say that this thing really, truly, totally ROCKS!!! There really is A LOT to be said about owning a 1Ghz. processor at only the fraction of the cost. Maybe I'm just lucky, I don't know. But if this is an example of what's out there, it certainly should give you hope of getting great stuff real cheap.

Okay from the results I would say that the Golden Orb, FKP32 and PEP66 are excellent products. I only was able to test the coolers with a Celeron PPGA cpu, so I'm not that sure how the coolers are going to perform with FCPA cpu's. The performance between the three coolers are extremely close and there isn't a real clear winner in term of performance.

For those on a tight budget the K601 is the cheapest of them all where else the Alpha PEP66 is almost triple compared to it. For an all rounder I would highly recomend the Golden Orb or the FKP32. For those who like the get the most expensive cooler than the Alpha PEP66 is the one.

Evil3D heeft een preview van de Virtual Window monitor gemaakt, een monitor die 'echt' 3D beeld kan laten zien. Dit werkt via hetzelfde principe als de shutter glasses van Elsa en Asus: elk oog krijgt een apart beeld te zien. Deze monitor heeft wel voordelen boven een 3D brilletje, je hebt niet meer last van die hoofdpijn refresh rates en je zit niet meer voor gek achter je PC . Het effect was volgens de reviewer errug cool (daar heeft hij ook gelijk in) alleen het is minder cool dat hij waarschijnlijk veel gaat kosten en dat je stil moet blijven zitten:

Heise Online meldt dat SuperMicro op Computex een nieuwe serie server borden met de ServerSet III LE en HE chipsets van ServerWorks heeft voorgesteld. De SuperMicro 370DE6 is een dual FC-PGA bord met ServerSet III HE chipset, AGP Pro, 64-bit/66MHz PCI, Ultra160 SCSI, 10/100Mbit Ethernet en 4 DIMM slots. Het tweede nieuwe bord is de 370DER met geïntegreerde ATi graphics, 2 10/100Mbit Ethernet controllers en drie DIMM slots. Deze zijn gekanteld zodat de plank ook in een laag 1U rack bruikbaar is.

Verder heeft SuperMicro Xeon borden met de LE en HE chipset aangekondigd. Voor eind dit jaar staat er tevens een dual Athlon bord met de AMD 760MP chipset op de planning:

The Register heeft wat interessante (maar nog steeds wazige) informatie over de 479-pins Willamette, die we vrijdag op zagen duiken in de roadmap van Akiba's PC Watch. Volgens The Register komt er vrij kort na de release van de 423-pins Willamette een nieuwe 479-pins versie, die een compleet nieuw moederbord design vereist. Dit zou de reden kunnen zijn waarom mobofabrikanten nauwelijks Willamette planken op de Computex lieten zien. Het is simpelweg de investering niet waard als enkele maanden later al weer een compleet nieuwe layout ontwikkelt moet worden.

De Willamette-479 mobo's krijgen volgens bronnen een layout met 'additional memory channels'. Waar de 54 extra pinnetjes van de Willamette-479 voor bedoeld zijn is nog steeds wazig, maar eerder werd al gespeculeerd dat Intel mogelijk de memory controller van de northbridge in de processor integreert:

This Willamette has 479 pins, and involves a radical design of the board, including additional memory channels, according to information we have seen.

The later version of the Willamette is a die-shrink, and is intended to pave the way for Northwood next year, which will be a .13 micron microprocessor.

There appear to be plans to introduce these processors for both synchronous memory and Rambus.

But the additional 54 pins pose something of a mystery, even given support for extra channels. Tulloch is the name of a lake, so you can draw whatever conclusions you like from that, although it appears that Taiwanese firms may sink or swim in those waters.

Winbond heeft een rapport opgesteld over de aardbeving die Taiwan twee dagen geleden trof met een kracht van 6,7 op de schaal van Richter. 3DGameGear heeft een review klaarliggen van de Rio 500, de alom bekende MP3-speler met 64MB geheugen van Diamond / S3. De reviewer heeft onder andere de stevigheid getest door de Rio in de vriezer te leggen, hem te laten vallen op een harde ondergrond en door hem te laten bakken in een oven . De Rio heeft deze tests allemaal perfect doorstaan. Er was wel een probleem toen werd geprobeerd of de Rio 500 ook van een bad hield - de Rio deed spontaan niets meer. Maar na 48 uurtjes drogen was de onverwoestbare Rio ook hiervan weer gerevalideerd. Het enige negatieve aan de Rio 500 was het koptelefoontje:

iXBT Labs heeft nu ook een review online geplant van de 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP, final versie. FSAA 4x ziet er natuurlijk ook bij iXBT wel mooi uit, maar de performance viel erg tegen. In bijna alle gevallen is de GeForce2 GTS sneller, en in sommige gevallen de GeForce256 DDR ook.

3dfx has finally launched one of the most powerful graphics cards, which proved pretty efficient. However, no matter what 3dfx reps would say about their main competitor, NVIDIA, they still failed to appear the best of the best and the title of the most powerful graphics card missed them this time. Note that here we don't mean Voodoo5 6000, but a graphics card from the same price category. And now a few words about the main advantages of this product. Of course, FSAA 4x effect makes some games unbelievably beautiful, however, there are not so many games, which provide acceptable fps in this case. As for us, we would prefer to play at higher resolutions where aliasing is not so noticeable rather than to play at minimal resolutions in order to get satisfactory performance with AA effect enabled. However, there are quite many users owning small monitors. Particularly for them FSAA will be an irreplaceable thing. Especially, since it will take another while before we finally get graphics cards powerful enough to provide high performance with AA. A couple of chipset generations will replace each other before we are able to play at 1024x768x32 with high quality FSAA (in case 3D gaming technologies remain the same by that time). In fact, we were very upset that the so long-awaited graphics card from 3dfx, which costs as NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS based card, sometimes yields in performance not only to the latter but also to its predecessor, NVIDIA GeForce256 based cards with DDR memory. Although we were impressed with the high speed and amazing graphics with FSAA 4x in some auto simulators, there were very few of them. So, we would recommend 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 graphics card to auto racing and Glide games lovers, dedicated gamers and 3dfx admirers. This card will serve you for a long time and will definitely make for the money you spend on it. 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 is a purely gaming piece. However, you should bear in mind that is requires high quality power supply units.

The title goes to the Arctic Silver Thermal Compound by a knockout! Although it came out nearly head to head with the CircuitWorks Silver compound, it really had the stamina in the later rounds. This stuff absolutely rocks! The main advantage (other than its thermal conductivity) of this over the two compounds that followed behind it in the rankings is the fact that it’s not electrically conductive. I don’t have any idea how the maker did this… But, it’s not electrically conductive. Usually, with the use of metal oxide based thermal compounds you lose some conductivity as a trade off. But, not so in this case! This is the obvious choice of the high-end compounds I tested. This can also be advantageous when used in peltier cooling applications where extremes in hot and cold are found. With the testing completed and my peltier kit reinstalled, this silver compound really outshines the competition in this category, too. Sometimes it’s true to say, “You get what you pay for.” But, with this compound you get a little more for a little less than it costs for the “other guy.”

Bij Yahoo!Finance lees ik dat de start-up SiByte een revolutionaire nieuwe MIPS64-core heeft uitgevonden. De microprocessor, die zijn weg moet vinden naar allerlei embedded systems, loopt tot 1GHz op minder dan 2.5(!) Watt. De SB-1 is het eerste resultaat van SiByte. Het bedrijf heeft geen eigen productiecapaciteit.

The SiByte SB-1 is a high-performance, low power implementation of the MIPS64 Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). The SiByte SB-1 core supports a quad-issue pipeline, which can dispatch up to two memory and two ALU (integer or floating point) instructions per cycle. A 32K Data cache and a 32K Instruction cache are built into the core, each 4-way associative. The core also includes a 128-entry, fully set associative TLB (Translation Lookaside Buffer) and advanced branch predictors to optimize flow through the pipeline. Based on preliminary benchmark results, the SB-1 delivers more than 2000 Dhrystone 2.1 MIPS at 1 GHz. This translates to more than 800 MIPS/watt, making it the world's most power-efficient core in its performance class.

Curry brengt ons het nieuws dat IBM laptops gaat produceren waar standaard Linux op geinstalleerd staat:

"IBM brengt een dezer dagen volgens CNET officieel het nieuws dat ze hun Thinkpad serie van laptops gaat uitbrengen met OpenLinux 2.4 van Caldera Systems. Ze reageren hiermee op de release van Dell afgelopen februari van laptops uitgerust met Linux. Ze verwachten de beestjes in de herfst van dit jaar op de markt te hebben."

The laptops are aimed at computer professionals and scientists, two groups that have embraced Linux, said Irving Wladawsky-Berger, the head of IBM's Linux group.

Tweak3D heeft een aardig artikeltje geschreven over de werking van bump mapping, de techniek die vooral Matrox heeft proberen te pushen (nog geen heel groot succes, maar wat niet is kan nog komen). Bumpmapping is een techniek waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van de licht-eigenschappen van een bepaalde oppervlakte. Door aan te geven welke delen donker en welke delen licht moeten zijn, lijkt het beeld complexer en realistischer. Een kleine kwoot:

A bump map is an array of values that represent an object's height variations on a small scale. A custom renderer is used to map these height values into changes in the local surface normal. A normal is the perpendicular vector to a plane -- 90 degrees from the plane. These normals are combined with the surface normal, and the results are used to evaluate the lighting equation at each pixel.

Wilko Veen schrijft bracht ons een link naar dit nieuwsbericht van het Belgische Disk Idee waar wordt gemeld dat de belangenvereniging IFPI al honderden Belgische Napsteraars heeft gelogd waarna hun provider wordt verzocht de betreffende persoon af te sluiten. De IFPI sluit zelfs niet uit om mensen gerechtelijk te gaan vervolgen. Zo wordt er al ruim 111.442 Euro geëist van een Waalse student met een uitpuilende MP3 FTP server:

Napster, het populaire uitwisselingsprogramma voor mp3-bestanden, is een doorn in het oog van de muziekindustrie. De belangenvereniging IFPI spoorde naar eigen zeggen al honderd Belgische Napster-gebruikers op. IFPI vraagt aan hun internetprovider om hun abonnement af te sluiten. Volgens e-Clickx heeft Skynet al een dergelijk verzoek voor een van zijn abonnees gehad van IFPI en werd zijn toegang ook daadwerkelijk afgesloten. Marcel Heymans van IFPI verklaart in e-Clickx ook dat hij niet uitsluit dat zijn organisatie thuisgebruikers gerechtelijk zal vervolgen. IFPI eist 4,5 miljoen frank (111.442 euro) van een Waalse student die een ftp-site uitbaatte met 99.000 mp3-bestanden. Dit stemt volgens IFPI overeen met de groothandelsprijs van negenduizend cd's. In deel I wordt gekeken naar kaarten met de TNT2, de GeForce1 en de GeForce2 chipset en deze worden getest op een normale configuratie. In het volgende deel zal dan worden ingegaan op de meer interessante dingen, zoals de combinatie van deze videokaarten met allerlei soorten CPU's en OS'en.

De (min of meer logische) conclusie van dit deel is dat als je beschikt over een TNT2 een upgrade naar een GeForce(1/2) een behoorlijke snelheidswinst zal opleveren en dat een upgrade van een GeForce1 naar een GeForce2 alleen nuttig is als je spellen op een (nog) hogere resolutie wilt spelen":

Given the present state of nVidia's drivers, we think the real advantage of the GeForce2 lies in the user's ability to up resolution and bit depth without a severe performance loss. If your currently using a TNT2 Ultra, upgrading to a GeForce 256 DDR will give you a very nice performance increase. The extra money you spend on a GeForce2 will buy you better all around image quality. You'll have the ability to improve things further by increasing the demands on the board without turning your games into slideshows.

If you're a GeForce DDR user and, for the sake of example, a bigtime Quake3 fan, how much would you like to to up your resolution to 1024x768 and maintain the 800x600 performance levels of your current board? Increasing the resolution will help with the dreaded "jaggies" and everything will look nicer. In single player mode, lightning fast framerates aren't quite as important, and you have more of an opportunity to admire the scenery. The GeForce2 will give you the ability to increase visual settings even further while maintaining playable framerates.

This, of course, assumes you have a fast enough CPU. If you have a slow CPU and a TNT2 Ultra, both of the newer boards will help. We just don't think the additional expense associated with the GeForce2 is justified given the minor increases in performance we saw in our PII 400 tests. As for GeForce DDR owners with a slow CPU, you might want to consider eliminating the CPU bottleneck first.

High-tech companies wield increasing power in the American economy, but they could face dark days in the coming months unless a nationwide energy shortage is quickly addressed, participants at a regional energy summit warned.

The U.S. Department of Energy and energy experts in several of the nation's largest electricity-consuming states say the possibility of extended blackouts looms large this summer and next, representing the potential loss of billions of dollars to high-tech firms that rely on uninterrupted power sources.

"Our aging power grid is not able to meet the needs of the information age," said Carl Guardino, president of the high-tech industry organization Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group, which sponsored yesterday's summit.

Computers and computer peripherals now consume about 13 percent of the nation's available power, a figure that has soared from less than 1 percent since 1993 as the Internet becomes a preferred method of doing business and communicating with each other.

But the construction of new power-generating plants and transmission lines to meet that demand has virtually ground to a standstill in the same period as companies wait to understand the effects of deregulation of the electric utility industry.

The imbalance threatens to grow even larger in coming months amid projections that electricity demand will grow 17 percent by 2007 as transmission capacity rises only 4 percent.

Anand was dit jaar ook aanwezig op de Computex in Taiwan en hij heeft een verslag voor ons klaar over de chipset nieuwtjes die hij er tegen kwam. Naast aandacht voor de i815E en VIA's Athlon en P3 chipsets is er ook wat interessante info over de aankomende DDR platforms. Het ziet er naar uit dat VIA's DDR chipset mogelijk niet afkomt voor het einde van dit jaar. ALi is daarentegen wel dichter bij een release maar heeft het nadeel dat slechts 1 mobofabrikant (Iwill) van plan is haar chipset te gebruiken.

In spite of this, ALi did promise to deliver a DDR Athlon platform and if everything goes according to plan it should arrive sometime this year. We asked VIA if they thought ALi was capable of delivering on this claim, in response they stated "[we] think that ALi is really good at PowerPoint." That's a pretty low blow from VIA but it also helps to illustrate the point that not only is designing an Athlon chipset difficult but designing one with DDR SDRAM support is quite an ordeal as well.

We asked every single manufacturer if they planned on using ALi's solution, especially if it became available before VIA's KT266 and every single manufacturer except for one had no plans whatsoever for using the ALi chipset (M1647). Each manufacturer had their own reasons for not pursuing an ALi based DDR Athlon solution ranging from a "good relationship with VIA and no reason to disrupt it" to a more serious "we are still on not so friendly terms with ALi."

The one manufacturer that did announce plans for a DDR Athlon motherboard based on the ALi solution was Iwill and they were more than proud to display their DDR Athlon mockup, which was actually the only Athlon board with 184-pin DDR memory slots that we saw on the floor. ALi told us that there would only be one manufacturer that would be producing a board based on their M1647 which is extremely disappointing, for ALi that is, since one motherboard manufacturer, especially Iwill (they're a great company but they happen to be one of the smallest motherboard manufacturers in Taiwan), isn't enough to get people using their chipset.
