EBN meldt dat S3, Texas Instruments, Cirrus Logic en PortalPlayer deze week tijdens het Embedded Processor Forum een nieuwe generatie MP3 codecs aan zullen kondigen. Vooral nieuwkomer PortalPlayer blijkt over interessante plannen te beschikken. Hun Tango chippie codeert en decodeert MP3'tjes en eet daarnaast ook Liquid Audio en Advanced Audio Codec formaten. Tango werkt niet alleen met Flash geheugens, maar begrijpt ook andere geheugen interfaces zoals SDRAM, Sony's Memory Stick, Multimedia Card, SRAM en de IDE interface voor koppeling aan CD-ROM drives en andere opslagmedia:

The Tango chip can encode and decode samples from 2 to 96 KHz at rates from 2 to 256 Kbytes/s. While the Cirrus Maverick typically consumes 87 mW when decoding 44.1-KHz, 128-Kbit/s samples, the Tango requires 130 mW on average for audio-file playback, which jumps six to eight times when encoding, according to PortalPlayer.

It also has the ability to interface to just about anything, which PortalPlayer claims is a significant advantage over competitors like Cirrus' Maverick, which connects only to flash memory. The Tango contains native interfaces to up to 256 Mbytes of SDRAM (512 Kbytes are typically needed for encoding) flash memory, CompactFlash memory, Sony's Memory Stick, the Secure Digital or SD Card, MultiMedia Card, SmartMediaCard, and generic SRAM, together with a generic IDE interface to CD-ROM drives or other storage devices.

A Universal Serial Bus version 1.1 connection has been integrated, along with 16 general-purpose I/Os. Like the Maverick, the Tango includes a direct connection to an LCD controller.

• Image handling is much much faster now (at the expense of RAM, this will be fixed REALLY soon)

Here's what Opera for Linux doesn't do yet:

• Font handling is still off by a bit, we're working on it
• CSS is having problems with inline styles, most important issues are line ends
• Frames are nearly perfect, but still not there
• Plugins are offset by 2 pixels from the top and left
• Window resizing works nicely now
• Forms don't resize properly.
• Clicking back on a page with forms controls with the page anywhere but flush with the top puts the controls in the wrong place
• <TEXTAREA> field don't properly get deleted
• Opera crashes a bit more now than the previous version.
• Printing is temporarily removed in most places

Currently this version has only been tested on RedHat Linux 6.2; we'll be releasing versions regularly now with the progress updated. There are now also ports to other platforms working nearly as well as the RedHat Linux 6.2 version is. We're compiling on pretty much everything and making use of tools that are different between platforms to make Opera work as well as possible. Expect to start seeing Technology Previews on other platforms. Also expect to see packages for the different systems soon.

IBM heeft een verdere uitbreiding van de ondersteuning voor het Linux platform aangekondigd. Onlangs werd al Linux support voor S/390 mainframes en Thinkpad laptops aangekondigd, nu komt daar SuSE PowerPC Linux voor RS/6000 servers en workstations bij. Van IBM Websphere Application Server wordt ook in de Advanced Edition in een Linux versie uitgebracht, meldt Heise Online:

Infineon heeft zijn 10 Base S Ethernet specificatie bij de IEEE 802.3 groep aangedragen als mogelijke standaard voor communicatie over de goedkope koperen telefoonlijnen. Infineon's 10 Base S protocol is gebaseerd op VDSL technologie en heeft een bandbreedte van 10Mb/s. De maximale lengte van de bekabeling is circa 1,2 kilometer:

Infineon developed 10 Base S as a cheap and simple way to install 10-Mbit/second connectivity on existing phone lines. The technology will work on any copper cable — it doesn't even require an upgrade to Category 5 cable, as regular Ethernet LANs do, said Mana Coste, an applications manager with Infineon (San Jose, Calif.). The 10 Base S scheme also reaches more than 4,000 feet, compared with a few hundred feet for regular Ethernet, he said.

The protocol is based on very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) technology, chosen in part because it can interact with legacy phone switches. "If you go to SDSL, it doesn't have the speed and it doesn't work with your existing PBX," Coste said.

Technology for 10 Base S was developed with Savan Communications Ltd. (Tel Aviv, Israel), the DSP specialist that helped Infineon develop two generations of VDSL chip sets.

Unix veteraan SCO zal volgens Network World eind deze week een eigen Linux distributie aankondigen, schrijft The Register. SCO heeft de afgelopen jaren uit het Linux kamp sterke concurrentie ontvangen voor het eigen commerciële Unixware operating system. De combinatie Unixware en Linux zou echter een stevige concurrent kunnen vormen voor andere Linux distributies:

Linux provides SCO with an opportunity to target the growing number of businesses interested in the open source OS, and to then flog them the technologies that make Unixware stand out, products they might not normally consider.

Good news for SCO - what about everyone else? No too good, it seems. SCO is coming into the market with much far more of channel, support and services infrastructure than almost any other player. SCO is already providing support to Caldera and TurboLinux customers.

"They own the low-end Intel/Unix market," D.H. Brown Associates analyst Tony Iams told Network World. "They know this space like no one. They have a tremendous set of relationships with resellers and OEMs." Absolutely.

This week's announcement will, it's believed, highlight IA-32 and IA-64 versions of SCO Linux, both scheduled for a Q4 2000 release. Next year, SCO will release versions targeted at specific types of user, such as ISPs and ASP.

In tegenstelling tot het aantal previews van de Voodoo5 en GeForce II maakt de Kyro een wat rustigere start, maar er is nu toch weer een nieuwe preview te vinden. Het benchmarken lijkt deze site over te hebben geslagen maar ze hebben wel een paar screenshots online gezet die heel duidelijk de verschillen in 16-bit rendering kwaliteit laten zien tussen de Kyro en de GeForce II:

Performance was quite impressive—we’d never have thought a $199 card with a fill rate of 220 megapixels would out-pace a regular GeForce, and get close to the performance of a GeForce DDR. It even outpaced our baseline GeForce DDR in a few tests.

[...] It will be quite interesting to see what the future holds for the Kyro architecture. If driver improvements cause an increase in performance of about 15% between now and when cards go on sale, the Kyro will certainly keep up with a GeForce DDR in modern games.

[...] Perhaps most promising is the fact that a card with such limited clock speed, fill rate, and memory bandwidth performs so well. At this rate, the Kyro technology has a lot more room to grow before reaching the limits of modern manufacturing processes. A 200 MHz version of the chip with 150 MHz DDR RAM could be about twice as fast, and is already possible with today’s manufacturing capabilities (though it would definitely cost more). We’d love to see ST Microelectronics produce a truly high-end version of the Kyro for the "around $300" price range, but the current card certainly manages to be the most impressive thing we’ve seen in the low-cost category in quite awhile.

Zoals je misschien ziet, het origineel is groter en duidelijker, ziet het plaatje rechts, gerendered met de Kyro, er een stuk beter uit. Een kleine opmerking die hierbij wel op zijn plaats is: je kan eigenlijk zeggen dat de Kyro geen echte 16 bit mode meer kent, alles wordt intern op 32 bit berekend wat dus een mooier plaatje opleverd en nog mooier: het snelheidsverlies als je van 16 bit naar 32 bit gaat is veel kleiner dan bij andere kaarten .

Eric liet weten dat DVD Zone een review gepost heeft van de bekende MP3 Disman, dit maal verkocht onder de naam Connect 8181. Het apparaat leest naast normale audio CD's ook zelfgebakken ISO CD-R's met MP3'tjes. Dankzij 50 seconde anti-shock memory is er praktisch geen sprake van over slaan:

De geluidskwaliteit van het apparaat is redelijk tot goed. Wij hadden de beschikking over een vroeg model, en toch hebben we geen problemen kunnen constateren. De Amerikaanse platenmaffia heeft rechter Marilyn Hall Patel gevraagd om Napster neer te halen. Napster zet volgens de RIAA aan tot grootschalige copyright-schending en is schadelijk voor de muziekverkoop. Deze claim wordt ondersteund door een onderzoek onder 2555 studenten, waaruit zou blijken dat Napster wordt gezien als vervanging voor de traditionele CD:

I think my recent experience with the Elsa Gladiac pushed me back to reality on the prices of Vid Cards. I wanted one to play with and we were not getting a freebie this time, so we simply went out and bought one. We spent US$386 for the card. It can be found cheaper now, but not the first week it was out. It was shelling out all that hard-earned green that kinda gave me a kick in the teeth, or slapped me back to reality rather. I admit that over the last few years we have come to be spoiled by receiving all the free review hardware that comes our way. There are a whole hell of a lot folks in the world that simply cannot afford the top-end video cards, much less upgrade every time the hot new thing comes along. Hell, tweaking out Intel CPUs for a few extra MHz, because we are poor bastards, is why we got started here at the Hard|OCP!

Anyway, there are still some folks out there that seem to care about the “poor bastards” in the world. These folks happen to be ST Micro and Imagination. ST Micro is a huge chip manufacturer capable of cranking out millions of chipsets. Imagination, maybe you remember them as Video Logic, is a technology company that has brought newer ways rendering 3D graphics. While some of their technology is not exactly new, it has certainly been improved upon and made much more efficient.

[...] Something that really gets me excited about the Power VR 3D technology is this. What do we get if we apply Tile Based Rendering to a 200MHz chipset? Maybe we will see that come to pass but it did not sound to be happening any time soon. I would certainly like to see Imagination and ST Micro make a run for the top spot though.

Deze kaart wordt waarschijnlijk dus zeker interessant voor de budget gamer en als ze het goed doen vegen de opvolgers van deze kaart de vloer aan met de kaarten van 3dfx en NVidia als die niet op tijd een zelfde techniek implenteren in hun kaarten.

Bij 3D Chipset zijn een paar pics te vinden van een nieuwe cooler voor de GeForce II, deze cooler moet binnenkort op de markt terecht komen en wordt gemaakt door het bedrijf ARX. Hoe effectief deze cooler is weet ik niet, maar het ziet er zeker indruk-wekkend uit :

Hardwareinfo.net heeft als eerste in Nederland een review klaar van de AMD Athlon 'Thunderbird' 800 processor, getest op een MSI K7T Pro Socket A moederbord. Alhoewel de Socket A Athlon nu sneller én goedkoper is dan een Pentium III was Koen wel wat teleurgesteld over de snelheidswinst ten op zichte van de Athlon Classic.

Als conclusie kan ik stellen dat ik gematigd enthousiast ben over AMD’s nieuwe Thunderbird CPU. Het is zeker prachtig dat AMD perfecte Athlon CPU nu nog sneller is en tevens goedkoper zal worden, door de nieuwe Socket A uitvoering. Het snelheidsverschil tussen de Thunderbird en de oorspronkelijke Athlon is echter teleurstellend, zeker als we bekijken wat Intel met een on-die cache kon bereiken. Laten we eerlijk zijn: iedereen had veel meer van de Thunderbird verwacht!

Personen die nu een Athlon systeem hebben, hoeven in ieder geval hun CPU niet meteen voor een Thunderbird te gaan inruilen: het blijkt wel dat je niet al te veel mist. Als je nu echter een Athlon systeem wilt gaan aanschaffen is het wel een goed idee om nog even te wachten. Zodra de Thunderbirds volop in de winkel liggen, krijg je een iets snellere Athlon CPU voor een lagere prijs.

AMD kan in ieder geval weer zeggen dat ze de snelste x86 CPU verkrijgbaar in hun assortiment hebben. De kleine performance toename is net genoeg om de Intel Pentium III Coppermine in de meeste gevallen achter zich te laten.

Tegen de meer dan 1 miljoen blokjes van AnandTech kon DPC niet op, maar de overige teams bleven we wel voor: een keurige 2e plaats was het gevolg.
