Infineon developed 10 Base S as a cheap and simple way to install 10-Mbit/second connectivity on existing phone lines. The technology will work on any copper cable — it doesn't even require an upgrade to Category 5 cable, as regular Ethernet LANs do, said Mana Coste, an applications manager with Infineon (San Jose, Calif.). The 10 Base S scheme also reaches more than 4,000 feet, compared with a few hundred feet for regular Ethernet, he said. The protocol is based on very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) technology, chosen in part because it can interact with legacy phone switches. "If you go to SDSL, it doesn't have the speed and it doesn't work with your existing PBX," Coste said.
Technology for 10 Base S was developed with Savan Communications Ltd. (Tel Aviv, Israel), the DSP specialist that helped Infineon develop two generations of VDSL chip sets.
