Sander Sassen van HardwareCentral heeft vanuit het Intel Developer Forum in San Jose wat info bij elkaar geharkt over de Intel Pentium 4 processor. In zijn preview lees je over neuheiten als Hyper Pipelined Technology, Execution Trace Cache en Streaming SIMD Extension 2 (SSE2) waarmee de P4 ons later dit jaar blij gaat maken:

With the introduction of a 20-stage pipeline in the Pentium IV, the longest ever implemented in an x86 CPU, Intel has found a way to run it at very high clockspeeds, in excess of 1.5 GHz. A longer pipeline can be used to increase a CPU’s clockspeed by trading off the number of stages against clockcycle duration. As an instruction is processed in stages, a 10-stage pipeline divides an instruction into 10 steps and takes 10 clockcycles to process the entire instruction; during every clockcycle a stage of the instruction is finished. Due to its 20-stage pipeline Pentium IV takes 20 clockcycles to finish one instruction, so very little processing is done within a single clockcycle and it can be very short.

[...] Another performance booster is the Trace Cache; a trace cache will try to store the instructions in the sequence in which they are executed. For example, if instruction A jumps from location 100 to instruction B at location 200, the trace cache will store B in a location right behind A. So the trace cache simplifies processing by making sure that instructions are in the right sequence.

[...] Overall, Intel has implemented some quite inventive solutions in the Pentium IV to attain clockspeeds in excess of 1.5 GHz. If properly supported and implemented, the new SSE2 instructions, the long pipeline, the trace cache and the improved branch prediction algorithms all contribute to a CPU that could turn out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

De mannen van TweakMax hebben een review in elkaar geknutseld van Mushkin's High Performance PC133 geheugen. De reviewer blijkt flink tevreden te zijn met het geheugen: zijn reepje kan namelijk op de fijne snelheid van 160MHz draaien met een CAS latency van 2-2-2. Het geheugen kost wel een paar centjes meer dan noname geheugen, maar hiermee ben je er wel bijna van verzekerd dat je geheugen geen probleem meer zal vormen in je tweak avonturen:

Thinking we had seen it all, our jaws dropped when we laid our eyes on the package we received from Mushkin. The memory module is suspended in an inflated plastic bag, much like a reinforced balloon! Judaz schrijft dat de Britse politie 3 mannen heeft gearresteerd die worden verdacht van een virtuele overval op de internetbank Egg. De virtuele bivakmuts van de overvallers was niet helemaal perfect, de politie heeft de overvallers met samenwerking van de bank te pakken gekregen. Volgens de politie hebben de 3 mannen duizenden guldens buit gemaakt, iets wat door het 'Eitje' ontkend wordt:

Volgens de politie zijn er duizenden ponden verdwenen, maar Egg ontkent dit. Britse media melden dat de drie dertigers nepleningen en spaarrekeningen afsloten.

Na zes maanden onderzoek onder codenaam Skoda, vielen agenten dinsdag zeven panden ten noordwesten van Londen binnen. Ze namen computerapparatuur, papieren, geld en drugs in beslag. De verdachten zijn inmiddels op borgtocht vrijgelaten.

Een woordvoerder van Egg zegt dat de bank naar de politie stapte toen de nepaanvragen aan het licht kwamen. Met speciale software konden de aanvragers worden achterhaald, aldus de woordvoerder. "Onze beveiliging is niet gekraakt en er is absoluut geen geld buitgemaakt. Ook hebben de 'overvallers' geen individuele rekeningen gepliunderd."

In een press release heeft Novell gisteren de komst NetWare 6 aangekondigd, eerder bekend onder de codenaam 6Pack. Op het gebied van schaalbaarheid zal NetWare 6 een grote stap vooruit zijn ten op zichte van eerdere versies, zo zal bijvoorbeeld SMP eindelijk goed ondersteund en gebruikt worden (met een maximum van 32 processoren) en zullen standaard clusters tot 32 nodes gemaakt kunnen worden.Ook gaat Novell onder de naam 'One Net' verder met het integreren van alle mogelijke netwerkservices, rond hun directoryservice, NDS.

djAzEtE wees me op een artikel van Computable, waarin wat kritische kanttekeningen worden geplaatst bij de gevolgde strategie van Novell:[/break]Charles Philips, software-analist bij Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, is niet onder de indruk van Novells bekendmakingen. "Netware 6 is vier jaar te laat om echt vernieuwend te zijn. Het zal meer als een nuttige opwaardering gezien worden, dan dat het de markt echt in beroering brengt." Hij voegt hieraan toe: "Novell heeft veel verschillende strategieën uitgeprobeerd. Maar er is geen snelle oplossing voor een probleem dat in jaren tijd is opgebouwd."
Tegen alle schijn in vecht Jim Tanner, directeur Netware binnen het bedrijf, verder. "Netware overtreft de mogelijkheden van Windows 2000 met gemak. En dat was te lezen in dit artikel van NWFusion. Daarin werd verder nog melding gemaakt van de IA64 versie van NetWare, die eigenlijk dit jaar nog zou moeten shippen, maar door het telkens vooruitschuiven van de release date van de Itanium zal dat er wel niet in zitten.

Vier dagen geleden schreven wij dat Transmeta geinteresseerd is in AMD's Lightning Data Transport bus. Vandaag schrijft Semiconductor Business News dat AMD in een interview heeft laten weten dat zij vooral geinteresseerd zijn in de technieken gebruikt bij Transmeta om het lage energie verbruik van hun Crusoe processor te bewerkstelligen. Een logische stap als je bedenkt dat AMD de grootste moeite heeft om CPU’s gebaseerd op de K7 core geschikt te maken voor het mobiele platform. Wat de deal tussen beide bedrijven gaat worden staat nog niet vast, maar waarschijnlijk zal het gaan om een uitwisseling van patenten:

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. here is discussing various types of cooperation with microprocessor startup Transmeta Corp., including possible technology exchanges for chips serving very low-end consumer PC appliance, according to AMD president Hector de J. Ruiz in an interview.

AMD is also interested in Transmeta's low-power processor technology, which could reduce power consumption of its own Athlon and Duron microprocessors, Ruiz added. AMD itself is developing new Athlong and Duron versions that will cut the present power consumption below 3 watts but Transmeta's technology might be able to cut the level to 1 watt, said Ruiz, who surprised the industry by joining AMD as president in January after heading up Motorola Inc.'s chip business for nearly three years.

Ben Anixter, vice president for external relations, said AMD won't move into the new market until it determines what its PC OEM customers want. "The Athlon and Duron core is very flexible and can be moved quicly into this market segment, once we see what customers want," he added.

Anixter also said AMD is interested in talking with Transmeta on technical cooperation for processors aimed at handheld Internet access devices. "We have a second interest in this market -- selling our flash memory for handheld devices," he noted. "Even if we decide not to target a processor for this market, we plan on selling lots o flash memory to it."

Hiermee heeft AOL een marktaandeel van meer dan 80 procent!":

Het zou lastig zijn voor de FTC om de praktijken van AOL aan te merken als 'anti-competitief'. Haar software is immers gratis te downloaden, waarmee er geen sprake zou zijn van zakelijk voordeel.

Zoals bekend heeft America Online zo ongeveer een monopolie met haar chatprogramma's. AOL's Instant Messenger heeft zo'n 85 miljoen gebruikers. Daar bovenop komen nog eens 70 miljoen ICQ-gebruikers. Hiermee zou 's werelds grootste provider een marktaandeel van meer dan 80 procent hebben.

Andere aanbieders van dergelijke programma's kijken likkebaardend naar de miljoenen gebruikers van AOL. Zij willen graag dat alle diensten probleemloos met elkaar kunnen communiceren. AOL doet er op haar beurt alles aan om dat te voorkomen, met kat-en-muis spelletjes tot gevolg.

Intel heeft op het IDF aangekondigd dat de i870 chipset voor servers zowel zal gaan werken met DDR als RDRAM geheugen. De chipset zal eind 2001 / begin 2002 debuteren en compatible zijn met zowel de 64-bit McKinley als de 32-bit Foster processors::

Executives at the Intel Developers Forum disclosed that the upcoming Intel 870 chipset for next- generation servers will support either Direct Rambus or double-data-rate (DDR) SDRAMs.

Mike Fister, vice president and general manager of Intel's enterprise platforms group, said the 870 will debut in late 2001 or early 2002 to support the 64-bit McKinley server that is the successor to Itanium. About a quarter later, the same 870 chipset would be available for the next-generation 32-bit Foster servers, he said.

It would be the first DDR chipset made by Intel itself. It would not be affected by Intel's licensing agreement with Rambus Inc. that bars Intel DDR chipsets for desktop PCs before 2003, since the 870 supports servers only. Fister said the totally different formats of Direct Rambus or DDR are handled by simply changing a few components in the 870 chipset.

Ik lees bij TechWeb dat Philips als eerste fabrikant is begonnen met de sampling van haar USB 2.0 controller chip. Aan de andere kant zou Cypress Semiconductor Corp de eerste zijn geweest die de werking demonstreerde van haar prototype EZ-USB FX2 USB 2.0 controller, die inderdaad 40 keer sneller bleek te functioneren dan de USB 1.1 standaard. Lucent meldde ergens deze herfst klaar te zijn met haar controller chip:

Philips Semiconductors of the Netherlands claims to be the first company to begin sampling a USB 2.0 controller chip. Cypress Semiconductor Corp. said its EZ-USB FX2 chip was the first integrated peripheral controller for USB 2.0 to demonstrate full functionality in Intel Corp.'s labs. Lucent Technologies Inc. this week also announced a single-chip host controller and a transceiver for USB 2.0, promising samples of those 0.25-micron ICs by this fall.

The USB 2.0 specification cranks up the data-transfer rates of the Universal Serial Bus to 480 megabits per second vs. 12-Mbits/sec. for the USB 1.1 standard.Those higher speeds are needed to deal with larger data files, such as graphics and images as well as high-speed mass storage peripherals, Internet access appliances, local area networks, and wireless LANs.

Cypress claims it is the current leader in USB chip shipments with 70 million units delivered to the market. The San Jose company projected that its 1999 revenues from the USB products will grow by more than 200% to $100 million in 2000.

Cypress said its EZ-USB FX2 USB 2.0 solution integrates a transceiver, a serial interface engine (SIE), and a general programmable interface (GPIF). Cypress claims its one-chip solution can be easier to use in implementing USB 2.0 than programmable logic or ASICs because more functions are integrated on silicon, including an 8051 microcontroller, logic, memory, and phase-locked loops.

WebWereld schrijft over K-Meleon, een open-source browser voor Windows met de Mozilla Gecko engine maar het uiterlijk van Microsoft Internet Explorer. Het proggie is slechts 2,8MB groot en zou moeten uitblinken op het gebied van gebruiksgemak en snelheid. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het bericht:

K-Meleon prijst haar browser aan als het Windows-antwoord op Galeon. Dit is de eveneens op Gecko gebaseerde browser voor Linux. K-Meleon richt zich echter uitdrukkelijk op een grotere groep computergebruikers: de liefhebbers van Windows en Internet Explorer.

De K-Meleon – die nu in beta is – lijkt dan wat betreft het uiterlijk als twee druppels water op Microsofts Internet Explorer. "De interface van K-Meleon probeert de IE-interface te imiteren", zo is op de site van de bouwers te lezen. Verder maakt K-Meleon gebruik van het bookmark-systeem van IE, die ook hier Favorieten heten.

Waarom zou iemand K-Meleon gebruiken? Omdat deze browser het gebruiksgemak van IE kent in combinatie met de Gecko-motor van Mozilla.org, aldus de makers. Met Gecko moeten webpagina's veel sneller op het scherm verschijnen.

Bovendien is het te downloaden bestand maar 2,8 MB groot. Er is ook een 'lite-versie' van 185 KB voor wie al Mozilla M17 op zijn PC heeft staan. Ter vergelijking: voor IE moeten tientallen MB's naar binnen worden gehaald. Zelfs de preview-versie van Netscape 6.0 – die ook Gecko herbergt – is nog altijd 10 MB groot.

Bij AnandTech is een verslag te vinden van de eerste dag van het Intel Developers Forum. Ze hebben natuurlijk over de 2GHz demo, die zoals het er nu uitziet op die snelheid niet stabiel was. Het enige programma wat ze durfden te draaien was namelijk CPUID...

Daarnaast is er een interessant stukje te vinden over Serial ATA, de opvolger van ATA-100. De theoretische maximale datatransfer snelheid komt met deze techniek nog verder van de echte snelheid van hardeschijven te liggen dan nu al het geval is met ATA-100, maar toch is het een interessante techniek aangezien je dan eindelijk verlost bent van die brede air-flow blokkerende kabels en het in de toekomst wel nuttig kan zijn:

It seems that serial ATA technology is inevitable, with the limits of current parallel ATA quickly approaching. In fact, Silicon Image states that the current ATA solution, ATA100, is pretty much the limit of speed that parallel ATA can handle.

With the introduction of serial ATA, Silicon Image promises transfer rates as high as 1.5 Gb/s with the initial product release and 3 GB/s on the very near horizon. With backwards compatibility, the transition to serial ATA promises to rather smooth. Although not many more details were given that were different from our initial serial ATA preview, we did manage to snap a few pictures of serial ATA in action. Although the demo system only made it halfway through a Windows98 bootup, it proved that data was being transferred over the serial ATA bus, as well as showing that the product is far from done.

The demo unit that Silicon Image had set up included a standard parallel ATA hard drive controller, interfacing with a dongle of sorts that converted the signal to serial ATA and sent it through a very skinny cable. This cable then plugged directly into a second dongle that converted the signal back to parallel ATA which allowed it to interface with a standard hard drive. Although the data was able to travel through the cable at the serial ATA speed of 1.5 GB/s, the devices at both ends were still limited to the standard parallel ATA speeds. News.com meldt dat Dell gisteren is begonnen met de levering van een nieuwe generatie Inspiron laptops met 15" Ultra XGA LCD display. Deze nieuwe schermen hebben een resolutie van maar liefst 1600*1200px! Goedkoop zijn de UXGA schoothondjes helaas niet: een Inspiron 5000e met 600MHz PIII gaat 5495 dollar kosten:

While the performance and disk storage offered with notebooks have largely caught up with desktop PC systems, display technology has lagged far behind. PCs traditionally have offered greater display resolution for consumers working with multiple programs or for multimedia and graphics arts professionals.

But Dell is trying to change that by offering notebooks with Ultra XGA (UXGA), the latest in high-resolution displays. While Dell may be the first to offer UXGA, other major PC manufacturers are expected to quickly follow the Round Rock, Texas-based company.

The higher resolution and greater density of the screens mean crisper, brighter images, making the notebooks reasonable replacements for low-end multimedia PC workstations, say analysts.

News.com schrijft dat Intel op het IDF wat meer details over de Pentium 4 heeft vrijgegeven. De die-size van de nieuwe processor blijkt 28% groter te zijn dan eerder verwacht, namelijk 217 vierkante millimeter in plaats van 170mm^2. Dit is maar liefst twee keer zo groot als de huidige Pentium III. De grote die-size van de P4 heeft tot gevolg dat de produktiekosten van de P4 veel hoger uit zullen vallen dan de kosten van de PIII. Bovendien zal Intel minder processors kunnen produceren en gaan de yields omlaag omdat de kans op fouten toeneemt als de die-size groter wordt. Een overgang naar een kleiner 0,13micron produktieprocédé is dus wenselijk:

The larger size also will add to the company's manufacturing costs because the chip will contain twice the amount of raw materials. [...] In addition, the large size will limit, initially, the number of chips that can be produced. Because the chips are being produced with the same manufacturing technologies as the Pentium III, the real estate requirements of the Pentium 4 mean Intel will be able to squeeze only half as many of the new chips out of a single wafer.

The company is also still struggling with a capacity shortage, so there is a finite amount of factory space it can dedicate to the new chip.

[...] The number of "bad" chips per wafer also increases as processors get larger, added Peter Glaskowsky, also an analyst at MicroDesign.

Intel will get some relief next year, however, as the company shifts from the 0.18-micron manufacturing process to the 0.13-micron process, which will shrink the Pentium 4. (The micron measurements refer to the size of elements of the chip.) In addition, the company late next year will move from using wafers that measure 200 millimeters in diameter to ones that measure 300 millimeters, which will increase more than double the number of processors that can be produced on each wafer.

Intel is nog steeds van plan om Rambus te gebruiken in de high-end Pentium 4 systemen. De markt moet beslissen welk type geheugen er door de mid-end P4 chipset gebruikt zal worden.

De meest recente opmerking van het RIAA is volgens mij wel de meest onzinnige die ze ooit gemaakt hebben. Ze zeggen nu namelijk dat de harde schijf niet tot de categorie "home recording device" behoort, hoewel er toch wel degelijk muziek mee op te nemen is. Ook menen zij dat MP3's die op de schijf van een Napster-gebruiker staan geen digitale opnames zijn. Als deze beweringen waar zullen worden bevonden, zal de Audio Home Recording Act niet van toepassing zijn op MP3's, wat het RIAA goed uit zal komen. Deze wet zegt namelijk dat consumenten kopieën mogen maken, zolang ze niet commercieel worden gebruikt:

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Music Publishers Assn. (NMPA) - your computer's hard drive is not a home recording device, so the Audio Home Recording Act (AHRA) does not protect it!

MP3 files that reside on another Napster user's hard drive are also not "digital music recordings."
