Wedman sent us a snippet from a newsletter from OpenSourceIT that starts off by saying that IBM will announce a new pricing scheme for Linux on the S/390 mainframes: Soon they'll cost $125k. For its part, IBM says it's easy to run multiple copies of Linux as a Virtual Machine guest, which allows a copy of an operating system to run on the mainframe as if it were an independent server. In one test, a user claims to have run 40,000 Linux Virtual Machine guests on one mainframe CPU. IBM claims users can actually run more than that - up to 41,000. These servers can also communicate with each other inside the mainframe at 500M byte/sec, much faster than they could if they were physically separate servers in a LAN.

Volgens WebWereld zal Microsoft in totaal 4,3 miljoen dollar overmaken aan Amerikaanse politici. Eerder dit jaar besteedde het bedrijf al 4 miljoen aan lobbyisten die Washington inlichtten over het beleid van Microsoft. Volgens critici zijn dit allemaal pure omkoopacties in verband met de antitrust rechtszaak. Microsoft zelf houdt het op informatieverstrekking:

Deze week is de Republikeinse conventie van start gegaan. Microsoft heeft 900.000 dollar aan software en 100.000 dollar in contanten aan de Republikeinen overgemaakt, zo schrijft persbureau Bloomberg. De Democraten kunnen op eenzelfde donatie rekenen. Alleen AT&T is nog guller.

In totaal maakt Microsoft zelfs 4,3 miljoen dollar over aan de twee partijkassen en de individuele kandidaten voor hun campagnes, waarmee het softwarebedrijf absolute koploper onder bedrijven is. Dat is nog niet alles. Verder besteedde Microsoft dit jaar al 4 miljoen dollar aan het inhuren van lobbyisten, die Washington moeten 'informeren' over het beleid van Microsoft. Ook politieke belangenverenigingen kregen geld.

Critici stellen dat Microsoft hiermee tracht politici om te kopen om ze zo te winnen voor haar antitrustzaak. Microsoft zelf houdt het liever op informatieverstrekking.

De Republikeinse kandidaat George W. Bush lijkt inmiddels al om te zijn. "Wij denken dat Bush goed is voor Amerika waar het gaat om innovatie en de vrije markt", aldus Microsoft-COO Robert Herbold. Bush zelf stelt dat de Republikeinen de software-industrie steunen, alsmede Microsofts recht om te innoveren.

Venator schrijft: "Bij Reactor Critical is een uitleg te bewonderen over de Pixel Shaders die we terug kunnen vinden op de GeForce2 kaarten. Hierin wordt de totale werking van het ding in detail uitgelegd, het boeide mij in ieder geval wel!"

Presented in this article is OpenGL extension NV_REGISTER_COMBINERS as provided by NVidia. This extension ensures programming color blending at the rasterizing stage which is a close analog of DirectX 8 pixel shaders. The extension is a low level interface and actually discloses the low level structure of registers and GeForce line chips' commands. Perhaps, there will emerge shortly "NVidia compatible accelerators", as it was at one point with x86 compatible microprocessors offered by different manufacturers.

The proposed approach enables us to implement flexible techniques of color blending. The capability to model a realistic per-pixel lighting on GeForce only in one pass deserves respect. Sure enough, the application of per-pixel shaders is not confined exclusively to calculation of per-pixel lighting. The interface as such is not very complex, though rather bulky.

Volgens dit bericht van YourNews IT kunnen we deze herfst een groot tekort aan chips verwachten waardoor de prijzen van bijvoorbeeld mobiele telefoons, tv's maar ook PC's zullen gaan stijgen. Vooral het tekort aan Flash-geheugen en D-RAM zal enorm worden; waarschijnlijk het grootste in 5 jaar . De oorzaak van dit alles wordt gezocht in de slechte langetermijnplanning van halfgeleiderproducenten:

Een wereldwijd tekort aan chips zal deze herfst de prijzen omhoog stuwen of tekorten doen ontstaan aan mobiele telefoons, opzetkastjes voor televisies, digitale camera's en pc's. Analisten menen dat het tekort aan 'flash'- en 'D-Ram'-chips wellicht de ergste zal zijn in vijf jaar. Zelfs de productie van interactief speelgoed wordt beïnvloed door het capaciteitsgebrek van de chipfabrieken.

Het probleem had een stuk minder erg kunnen zijn als halfgeleiderproducenten een betere langetermijnplanning hadden gemaakt, zo stellen analisten. Richard Gordon, analist bij Gartner Dataquest zegt: "De voorraad Flash- en D-Ram-chips fluctueert altijd sterk, maar nu wordt het toch wel erg krap. De productie van de fabrieken kan ternauwernood aan de vraag voldoen." De prijzen van flashgeheugen zijn sinds januari 1999 verdubbeld.

Sommige mobiele telecombedrijven schroeven de productie terug. Ook producenten van opzetkastjes waarschuwden dat ze problemen hebben om flashchips te bemachtigen. Hierdoor zal de opkomst van digitale tv vertraagd worden.

Bij het Duitse TecChannel.de hebben ze een preview met benchmarks gepost van een prototype moederbord gebaseerd op de ProSavage PM133, VIA's nieuwe chipset afgeleid van de bekende Apollo Pro 133. De PM133 heeft geïntegreerde S3 Savage4 graphics en maakt gebruikt van de nieuwe VT8605 Northbridge en de al bestaande VT82C686A Southbridge. De eerste benchmarks (waarbij de geïntegreerde graphics werd uitgeschakeld en er TNT2's werden gebruikt) zien er al veelbelovend uit: de PM133 is onder 2D applicaties én 3D games sneller dan de i815E en de Apollo Pro 133. The Register heeft een blurb neergekwakt over Windows Millennium Edition waarin ze de goede kanten van dit OS even belichten. Ze zijn o.a. tevreden met het snelle boot- en afsluitproces, het Win2000 kleurenschema, IE5.5 en de System Restore optie. WinME wordt nog steeds 14 september officieel in de winkels verwacht.

Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5.5 are included, IE5.5 finally getting a decent print engine featuring print preview. Of course, you can already download both of these for free should you feel so inclined.

The revamped media player 7 is a pretty good stab at an all-singing, all-dancing MP3 player with better usability than most of the competition.

It works with most standard audio and video formats, (but not RealMedia), and features a Web radio tuner, a jukebox, and a file transfer utility to copy and compress files or streaming media to portable MP3 players and Windows CE devices.

Patrick Schmid van Tom's Hardware Guide heeft een interessant artikeltje in mekaar gedrukt over het omhoog klokken van de busspeed van de i815 chipset. Met behulp van snel CAS2 PC133 SDRAM slaagde THG erin om de bus van een Asus CUSL2 moederplank tot 166MHz te verhogen. Uit de Quake III benchmarks blijkt dat een PIII-666 op deze busspeed vergelijkbaar presteert als een PIII-733, circa 7% sneller dan een PIII-666 met 133MHz FSB:

In mijn mailbox vond ik een "Advanced Change Notice" van AMD (een soort interne mededeling) dat op 24 september 2000 de productie van Slot-A processors zal stoppen. De laatste batches gaan op 1 october de deur uit. Dat AMD helemaal over wilde gaan naar socket-processors was al bekend, per wanneer dat zou zijn was echter nog niet bekend:

Description of Change: AMD Athlon processors will not be manufactured in Slot A module form after September 24th, 2000.

Reason for Change: To maximize processor output on the Socket A PGA package to keep up with demand for the new infrastructure and increase the manufacturability of the Athlon processor.

Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 1e en heeft een kans van één op 20 om de sleutel te vinden!

Ik lees bij JC dat Crucial Technology (een divisie van Micron) prijzen van 64 en 128MB PC1600 DDR reepjes online heeft gegooid. In vergelijking met de goedkoopste PC133 modules op Pricewatch.com zijn de DDR prijzen van Crucial ongeveer 25% hoger, dus dat valt mee. Zodra de marktacceptatie van DDR SDRAMs toeneemt zal het prijsverschil ongetwijfeld kleiner worden. Volgens eerdere berichten is het verschil in produktiekosten tussen single data rate en double data rate SDRAMs slechts 5%.

Yep, dat zie je goed: de PC1600 en PC133 prijzen van Crucial zijn exact gelijk!

De open-source gemeenschap is afgelopen vrijdag begonnen met een 'Open Windows Project', zo meldt Nu.nl. Iedereen die kan programmeren mag meehelpen aan een gratis alternatief voor Windows dat even gebruiksvriendelijk is, gebruik zal maken van het FAT-filesystem en een 32-bits kernel zal hebben. Goede programmeerkennis lijkt me wel nodig, want een OS vanaf de bodem opbouwen is niet niets. In het Nu-artikel zijn ze trouwens zo slim om te schrijven dat je op de website kan aanmelden, maar een link wordt niet gegeven:

Een aantal leden van de open-brongemeenschap is het beu om te wachten op het vrijgeven van de broncode van Windows. Daarom hebben zij een project gestart om een gratis volledig 100 procent MS-compatibel besturingssysteem te ontwikkelen.

Belangrijk is dat er gewerkt wordt rond het FAT-bestandssysteem, en niet rond de meer exotische varianten die door Linux worden gebruikt, zodat de overstap voor de alledaagse gebruiker moeiteloos zou moeten gaan.

De kernel wordt volledig 32-bit, waarmee OWP tegemoet komt aan de kritiek die wel vaker aan het adres van Microsoft wordt gericht. De softwaremaker belooft al jaren een volledig 32-bit OS voor de gewone consument, maar heeft de grootste moeite om de gemengde 16/32-bit kernel van Windows 9x te verlaten.

LoCL liet ons via de news submit weten dat Ace's Hardware wat interessante info heeft gepost over de DDR-II, de voor 2002 geplande opvolger van DDR SDRAM. Uit de Platform 2000 presentatie van Enhanced Memory Systems blijkt dat DDR-II gebruik zal maken van de ESDRAM technologie van Ramtron (waar EMS een dochteronderneming van is). ESDRAM gebruikt snelle SRAM buffers om de latencies voor het lezen van de DRAM cellen te verlagen. Omdat de row data vanuit de SRAMs wordt geserveerd kan de precharge latency voor het opnieuw laden van de condensators in de DRAM cellen omzeild worden:

"Ramtron found a more elegant solution. ESDRAM, a sort of cached DRAM, includes SRAM buffers. Those SRAM buffers contain the row data, and the controller can read those buffers instead of the sense amps (see part one to fully understand this). While the SRAM buffers are read, the sense amps can do precharge and refresh operations. In other words, those SRAM buffers can eliminate a latencies like the precharge latency (Precharge time (Trp)). And that is not all. Such SRAM buffers have lower CAS and RAS to CAS latencies, so if the buffers contain the right information, the critical word may be send in 5-6 cycles to the CPU instead of the 7 cycles that we have calculated for "normal" SDRAM. ESDRAM is also based on HSDRAM chips (HSDRAM is also developed by Ramtron) and can be clocked at higher speeds. ESDRAM offers little benefit for streaming applications (only slightly more bandwidth) but in most cases ESDRAM can offer a lot lower "critical word latencies".

De relatief hoge latencies van DRAMs vormen op dit moment al een zware bottleneck voor de performance van processors en in de toekomst zal dit probleem bij een verdere stijging van de kloksnelheid alleen maar groter worden. Dit lijkt ook de conclusie te zijn van InQuest Market Research, de organisator van de Platform 2000 conferentie. Volgens hen is de bandbreedte bij DDR SDRAM en Rambus geen groot probleem meer. De voornaamste bottle neck zit 'm bij de hoge latencies:

De oplossing van Ramtron is dus een interessante methode om de latencies terug te brengen. Een verderde reductie van de latencies is mogelijk door de memory controller en de processor te integreren. Hierdoor kan minimaal 1 kloktik voor het passeren van de northbridge bespaard worden. Voor zover bekend zullen de Alpha 21364 en AMD Sledgehammer gebruik maken van een geïntegreerde memory controller.

In een poging om naar de dramatische koersval van vorige week wat positief nieuws de deur uit te krijgen, heeft Rambus Inc. aangekondigd dat zij de basisfrequentie van de RDRAM bus omhoog hebben gekrikt van 400 naar 533MHz. Deze nieuwe PC1066 (?) RDRAMs gaan volgend jaar in productie en hebben een theoretische bandbreedte van 2,1GB/s, gelijk aan de snelheid van PC2100 DDR SDRAM. Wellicht zal dit betekenen dat het 'oude' PC800 geheugen in prijs zal gaan dalen. Reken er overigens niet op, want PCs staan niet genoemd als applicatie:

Aukema liet ook een verklaring zien van Lotus, waarin het bedrijf het bestaan van de lekken erkent. Voor een officiële reactie was Lotus niet bereikbaar.

"Bedrijven en overheden varen blind op de veiligheid van Lotus Notes. Dat vertrouwen is onterecht." Met het door The Trust Factory gevonden lek kunnen hackers zich toegang verschaffen tot gevoelige informatie, zegt Aukema. The Trust Factory heeft een aanval op een Lotus Notes-systeem gedemonstreerd, zonder dat de exacte technische details werden prijsgegeven.
