VIAHardware heeft het 4e deel van de VIA Guide gepost. Nadat eerdere delen gingen over het kiezen en inbouwen van een moederbord gaat men deze keer in op het opkrikken van de prestaties. Hier een hap over het inschakelen van AGP 4x:

When NVidia released the 5.xx series of reference drivers for the TNT/GeForce line of video chipsets, they disabled AGP4X on VIA chipsets that supported it (AP133A, KX133, KT133).

The reason for this was simple: The GeForce2 GTS has been shown to run unreliably on some motherboards in AGP4X mode. The problem is a bit odd, as it seems to vary from motherboard to motherboard, even between motherboard of the same brand/model. The TNT2 and original GeForce, however, function perfectly under AGP4X on VIA chipsets. If you have one of these cards, or want to try AGP4X with your GeForce2, you should enable AGP4X by using these registry keys:

Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 2e en heeft een kans van één op 28 om de sleutel te vinden!

CharString schrijft: "Bij Tweakmax vroegen ze zich af hoeveel hitte een K6-2 300 CPU nou eigenlijk kon hebben voordat hij echt "gefried" was. Ze bedachten een leuke test: plak de hot-side van een Peltier op de proc zonder cooling en monitor de temperaturen waarop de CPU nog wil werken:"

We decided that the best way to heat up a CPU was with a help of a peltier. We used a 72 watt Melcor LX series peltier, which draws 10 amps at 8 volts. The test was fairy simple, we just placed the hot side of the peltier onto the top heat plate of the CPU, and monitored surface temperature with a thermal probe. We chose the specific peltier because of its high endurance, the peltier can take a +80C beating.

The CPU booted fine up to +50C, but started to crash at +55C, and finally died at +75C. When the CPU reached +70C it didn’t even post, but we waited for 10 minutes, and it came from the dead at +50C, unfortunately we cant say the same for +75C ;(

Graag even een paar seconde stilte voor deze overleden K6-2. 75 graden heeft hij niet overleeft:

Venator bracht ons een link naar Hot Hardware waar ze de Abit SE6 i815 eens hebben vergeleken met de Abit BX133-RAID. Qua performance is er niet zo gek veel verschil tussen de twee te ontdekken. De SE6 kan makkelijker overweg met hoge bussnelheden van bv 150MHz vanwege zijn AGP 1/2 divider terwijl de BX133 kan profiteren van superieure harddisk performance dankzij RAID ondersteuning. Hieronder een gedeelte uit de test:

Both boards are excellent over-clockers. We were torn between the excellent stability of all bus speeds with the SE6 and the unbelievable range of options with respect to FSB settings on the BX133-RAID. The SE6 exhibited the ability to run up to it's full 153 MHz. front side bus, with full stability, on our unlocked engineering sample Coppermine. The BX133-RAID could do this as well but failed to run 3D apps above 140MHz. FSB with our Voodoo5 (not used testing). On the other hand, the Elsa Gladiac GeForce 2 card held up fine on the BX133-RAID, up to a top end of 155MHz. FSB with a 2/3 divider for a blistering 102MHz. AGP bus speed. The V5 topped out at 92MHz. (if you are doing the math).

One of the strong points for the SE6, is its 1/2 FSB AGP clock divider. Even at the full 153MHz., all graphics cards we tested ran flawlessly. If you need higher bus speeds for over-clocking, the SE6 is your board. If you want lots of over-clocking options and have a 2D/3D card that can handle high AGP speeds, the BX133-RAID is more for your taste, especially if you set it up for RAID 0 hard drive configuration.

Op de dag van zijn release heeft AnandTech een review voor ons van de Intel Pentium III op 1.13GHz. De CPU biedt qua architectuur niets vernieuwends tov van zijn voorgangers, behalve dat zijn multiplier op 8,5 is geschroefd. Verder is het voltage wat verhoogd naar 1.75V om de zaak stabiel te laten draaien. Wat betreft de leverbaarheid het bekende verhaal; de komende tijd vrijwel niet aan te komen behalve via enkele grote OEMs voor $990 dollar. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

Another Pentium III reviewed, another clock speed benchmarked. The release of the 1.13GHz Pentium III won't change things too incredibly in the CPU industry, it will most definitely guarantee the release of AMD's 1.1GHz Thunderbird very soon but other than that, it probably won't even effect prices too much considering that it won't be available in mass quantities until later this year.

If you're set on getting a Pentium III, the big question is what platform to pursue. We've pretty much already established that the i820 + RDRAM platform is entirely too expensive right now to justify anyone pursuing it, so let's see what options you're left with:

For now the fact remains that if you happen to have a BX motherboard that supports Coppermine CPUs, you're probably better off sticking with your current platform and possibly overclocking it to make use of the 133MHz FSB.

The VIA Apollo Pro 133A platform is finally at the point where it can be considered to be quite mature, there are obviously some quirks about the platform (chipset patches, GART drivers, etc...) that you have to deal with but it's nothing that your average hardware enthusiast can't tackle. For those of you that want to stick to an Intel chipset but still get PC133/133MHz FSB support, the i815 is a great option and pairs up with the Pentium III quite well, the only downside is that because of its integrated video the boards that are currently available are carrying pretty hefty price tags, most of which are currently retailing for above $150.

bij HardwareCentral is een review gepost van de 2.1 MegaPixel Kodak DC290 digitale camera. Helaas was Sander Sassen niet echt onder de indruk van de kwaliteit van het ding, voor de hoge prijs van $1000 dollar zijn er betere modellen te krijgen. Hieronder een gedeelte:

The DC290 is equipped with a zoom lens which has 3X Optical zoom and 2X digital zoom to give it a total of 6X zoom. The digital zoom is actually similar to the way the DC290 interpolates a 2.1 MegaPixel image into a 3.3 MegaPixel image, it takes the middle portion of the screen and interpolates that to a higher resolution. This does however mean that depending on what you’re looking at, and how close you are to that object you may or may not see degradation in image quality. Interpolation usually means that an image is calculated with data from the lower resolution image, thus that image cannot have a resolution similar to the original.

It is also nice to see that the DC290 has an optical viewfinder, not seldom do we find ourselves outdoors with the sun shining and then it is really hard to see what you’re shooting if you cannot make out the image on the LCD. On the other hand, although it is positioned directly above the lens it doesn’t ‘see’ through the lens, as with a reflex camera, thus for close-ups you will need to compensate for vertical misalignment.

Speaking of close-up, we were kind of surprised that the DC290 does not have any macro support, which means that you won’t be able to get a proper focus if you’re taking close-ups from typically or foot (30cm) or less away. But overall the DC290 offers a focal range which is comparable to a standard 35mm camera and thus will be sufficient for most people’s needs.

Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een roundup geschreven van 9 CD-ROM en 9 DVD spelers van merken als Asus, AOpen, KenWood, Plextor, Acer en Creative. Uit de testresultaten bleek de Cyberdrive CD522D de beste CD-ROM speler. De Acer DVP 1040A en de AOpen DVD-1040 Pro werden gekozen als beste DVD drives.

Bij de CD-Rom drives is er maar één drive die er echt uitspringt: de Kenwood 72X. Deze drive is op alle fronten het snelst en produceert daarbij ook nog eens bijna geen lawaai. Meer dan driehonderd gulden is natuurlijk veel geld voor een CD-Rom drive, maar als u echt de hoogste performance wenst, in de Kenwood 72X de enige goede keuze: een terechte gegadigde voor een Hardwareinfo.net Silver Award! Als we iets meer letten op de prijs/kwaliteit verhouding, komt de Cyberdrive 52X speed het beste uit de test. De drive presteert zowel bij de CD-Rom als bij de DAE test zeer goed en de drive is gelukkig ook zeker niet te duur. De Cyberdrive 52X krijgt daarom van ons het predikaat “Beste Keus – CD-Rom Drives” en verdient daarmee een Hardwareinfo.net Gold Award.

Bij de DVD drives is het uiteraard de Pioneer 16X speed drive die eruit springt: het is absoluut de snelste DVD drive uit de test. Of zo’n snelle DVD drive wel nut heeft valt te betwijfelen, want veel DVD-rom schijven zijn er nog niet en bij DVD-Video’s is een 1X speed drive al voldoende. Als we de testresultaten verder analyseren, valt op dat de twee 10X speed DVD drives van Acer en AOpen ook zeer goed presteren. Aangezien deze drives toch een stuk goedkoper zijn dan de gloednieuwe 16X speed drive, krijgen de Acer en AOpen 10X speed drives het predikaat “Beste Keus – DVD-Rom Drives” en dus ook een Hardwareinfo.net Gold Award.
