Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een 64MB ATi Radeon kaart weten te bemachtigen waarvan je hier zijn review kunt vinden. Vanwege de snelheid van de Radeon in hoge resoluties en 32-bit kleur kan Koen ons dit kaartje allemaal aanbevelen:

ATI heeft zich absoluut aan al haar beloftes gehouden. Met de Radeon hebben ze een videokaart op de markt gebracht die wat specificaties betreft door geen enkele andere videokaart overtroffen wordt. Als we in de benchmarks zien dat de Radeon op veel plaatsen sneller is dan nVidia’s GeForce 2 GTS, dan kunnen we wel stellen dat ATI met de Radeon een ware topper in handen heeft! Wie had dat gedacht van een fabrikant die tot voorkort alleen nog maar succes had met langzame videokaartjes in OEM systemen!

Hoewel ik de kaart slechts een paar dagen heb kunnen testen en niet alle onderdelen van de kaart tot in detail heb kunnen uitproberen, durf ik nu toch al te stellen dat de ATI Radeon op dit moment een van de interessantste videokaart producten is. Als we naar de Amerikaanse prijzen van de kaart kijken (ca. $250, dus net iets meer dan Fl. 500,--) kunnen we wel stellen dat de kaart zeer concurrerend kan worden. Een GeForce 2 videokaart met 64 MB geheugen kost op dit moment namelijk nog steeds tegen de Fl. 1000,--!

In de toekomst zullen we zeker nog meer aandacht aan de Radeon gaan besteden. Wat mij betreft kan iedereen de kaart nu al met een gerust hart aanschaffen. Een Hardwareinfo.net Silver Award is de Radeon in ieder geval waard!

Dutch Power Cows is vandaag 1e en heeft een kans van één op 22 om de sleutel te vinden!

Op het moment dat Windows Millennium Upgrade in de winkel zal liggen (14 september) zal het pakket te koop zijn voor maar 149 gulden. Microsoft heeft begrepen dat men niet meer zo snel naar de winkel rent voor een upgrade-cd'tje als veel van de verbeteringen (nieuwe internet explorer, nieuwe media speler, beveiligingsupdates) al van het internet te downloaden zijn. Daarom zal het nieuwe besturingssysteem tot de kerst voor de halve prijs te krijgen zijn, daarna zal de prijs op 299 gulden komen te liggen:

Microsoft wil met een actieprijs van september tot aan de kerst Windowsgebruikers overhalen de Windows Millennium Edition Upgrade aan te schaffen.

Op 14 september ligt de upgrade in de winkels. Tot aan de kerst is het pakket te koop voor 149 gulden. Die prijs geldt voor gebruikers van Windows 95, Windows 98 of Windows 98 Second Edition. Die groep moet het met de actieprijs aantrekkelijk worden gemaakt om over te stappen op Microsofts nieuwste besturingssysteem.

Na de actieperiode zal de prijs voor de upgrade op 299 gulden komen te liggen. Voor de volledige versie van Windows Me (dus voor computeraars die nog geen Windows 95 of 98 hebben) moet 599 gulden worden betaald.

Bij VR-Zone hebben ze wat specificaties van de AMD Mustang. De Mustang zal zijn debuut maken op 1,6 GHz en zal worden uitgerust met 128KB full-speed L1 en 1,5 MB full speed on-die L2 cache. Hieronder nog wat meer info en de volledige specificaties:

Mustang core is planned to be launched in the beginning of next year. The upcoming processor will feature Athlon architecture with an extra large integrated L2 cache and will be aimed at workstations and servers. Moreover, Mustang is said to be supporting multiprocessor configurations (with 760DP chipset based mainboards). The architecture will be slightly redesigned compared to the ordinary Athlon CPU, which gives us the right to hope that Mustang will manage to turn out a worthy competitor to Intel Pentium 4.

Hoewel Linux steeds meer in begint te raken zal het volgens een onderzoek van IDC Windows NT nog lang niet inhalen. Het gebruik van Linux zal wel procentueel snel stijgen, maar in vergelijking tot Windows NT stelt het niets voor. Zeker qua omzet valt Linux in het niets bij Microsoft. Over het geld dat bij Microsoft in drie dagen binnenkwam aan NT-licenties deden de Linux-distributies een jaar lang:

Ook al verdrong Linux Novells Netware in 1999 van de tweede plaats, het 'open source' systeem heeft nog een lange weg te gaan, wil het Windows NT ooit verslaan.

Volgens onderzoek van IDC naar de markt voor server-besturingssystemen zal de toepassing van Linux tot 2004 met 28 procent per jaar groeien. Dat is 11 procent meer dan zijn concurrenten. De omzet stijgt met 23 procent per jaar, terwijl de industriebrede groei van de omzet afvlakt tot een geringe jaarlijkse groei van 1 procent. Ondanks deze indrukwekkende cijfers zal de jaarlijkse omzet aan Linux server-licenties in 2004 niet meer zijn dan 85 miljoen dollar per jaar.

IDC: "In termen van omzet is Linux niet meer dan een zandkorrel op het strand van een oceaan. Hoewel er een hele hype rond het 'open source'-besturingssysteem is ontstaan bedroeg de totale omzet aan Linux-serverlicenties in 1999 niet meer dan 67 miljoen dollar. Datzelfde bedrag had Microsoft al op 3 januari van hetzelfde jaar binnen."

In percentages is de marktdominantie van Microsoft ook indrukwekkend: het bedrijf nam 87 procent van alle verkochte licenties voor zijn rekening. In 2004 is dit aandeel hoogstens geslonken tot 85 procent.

Crack schrijft: "TweakTown heeft een vergelijking geschreven tussen Windows 2000 en een alpha-versie (build 2250) van Whistler 2001. Whistler maakt een goede indruk, vooral qua CPU Speed is Whistler duidelijk sneller dan Windows 2000. Hier is een hap uit de conclusie en een paar grafiekjes voor jullie:

nVidia zal naast de grafische processor ook een derde chip ontwikkelen voor de Xbox console van Microsoft. Wat het precies gaat worden werd niet verteld, maar waarschijnlijk een chip voor extra video of audio effecten. Hieronder een hap uit dit artikel van C|NET:

Graphics chipmaker Nvidia, already selected to provide the graphics processor for Microsoft's Xbox, also is working on a second, unannounced chip for the gaming console.

Nvidia chief executive Jen Hsun Huang said recently that there are three main chips for the Xbox: the microprocessor, the graphics processor and an unannounced third chip Nvidia will provide, possibly handling advanced sound or video functions.

"Nvidia is developing two of the devices," Huang said during a presentation at the Robertson Stephens Semiconductor Conference in San Francisco last week. Intel's Pentium III has already been chosen as the microprocessor.

Microsoft would not comment on the mystery chip. The Xbox, slated to arrive next fall, offers game playing, Internet access and a DVD drive. Analysts said there are several possibilities for what Nvidia's other chip might do.

Microsoft has already listed a "custom 3D audio processor" in its list of specifications for the console.

If Nvidia were doing the audio, it would be a whole new area for the company and something it might not want to advertise to the industry. Analyst Peter Glaskowsky of MicroDesign Resources said it's within the company's ability level.

"It's supposed to require a whole lot of math," Glaskowsky said of the audio chip. "Nvidia certainly has a whole lot of know-how to do that."

Nvidia also is doing the core logic for the Xbox--the technology that allows the Pentium III microprocessor to talk to the graphics chip and other components--although Huang indicated that the unknown chip goes beyond that function. The chip might provide additional power for video processing, Glaskowsky hypothesized.

Ik lees bij USB Workshop dat Kodak is begonnen met het leveren van haar nieuwe DC3400 Zoom 2.3 megapixel digitale camera. De camera gaat $499 dollar kosten en is vergelijkbaar met het oudere DC280 model.

De grootste verschillen met dat model zijn het verminderde stroomverbruik (de oudere Kodak camera's zijn berucht om hun enorme batterijconsumptie) en de fors lagere prijs:

Today, the photography giant Kodak starts shipping the new DC3400 Zoom at a suggested price of $499.

Kodak's latest offering closely resembles DC280 Zoom.

Both cameras' specifications are generally the same, featuring 2X optical zoom, 3X digital zoom and a 2.3 megapixel CCD lens. DC3400 Zoom comes with a 8MB card, same as DC280 Zoom. Despite of the resemblance, Kodak DC3400 Zoom has a "streamlined body, classic, sage green grips, a silvery green finish" and it is priced $200 less than DC280 Zoom.

Kodak claimed DC3400 Zoom improves on the battery life. And of course, the new camera connects via USB, as well as serial interface. In addition, DC3400 Zoom comes with Arc Soft PhotoImpressions 2000 software for easy photo retrievals and manipulations.

Operating system support for Windows includes Windows 2000/98/ 95/ NT 4.0. Mac support includes MacOS 8.5.1, which is required for USB connection, and MacOS 7.6.1.

TheEmperor wees ons op dit Register-artikel, waarin melding wordt gedaan over Hotmail's migratie van FreeBSD naar Windows 2000. Het is natuurlijk logisch dat Microsoft dit wil, aangezien het een beetje knullig staat als een bedrijf dat zelf besturingssystemen maakt een OS van een ander gebruikt voor z'n eigen servers. Dat vond Microsoft dus ook, en gaat daarom FreeBSD door Win 2K vervangen. Op dit moment wordt pas 5-10% van de data door Win2K-machines geserveerd, maar volgens Netcraft is dit niet zo gek. Een migratie kan namelijk meerdere weken kosten:

Microsoft is gearing up to neutralise one of its biggest ongoing embarrassments - the fact that its Hotmail service runs on FreeBSD/Apache. According to Netcraft's July Web Server Survey, Microsoft has started to move some Windows 2000 machines into the Hotmail load balancing pool; all being well, this will be the beginning of a migration.

Having people point and laugh because you're running Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD or whatever is what you might call an acquisitional hazard for Microsoft. As the company grows the MSN empire by buying up services, it inevitably ends up owning sites that don't run on Microsoft code. Netcraft's July stats ram home the statistical inevitability of this, showing Apache with 62.81 per cent of the market (up a little) and Microsoft IIS with 19.86 per cent (down a little).

At the moment, Netcraft says that only 5-10 per cent of Hotmail requests are being served by the Win2k boxes, and it may well be some time before security escorts FreeBSD from the premises. Netcraft says that "even if everything runs smoothly, a migration will likely take several weeks." Microsoft also owns LinkExchange, another major FreeBSD site.
