deep_blue schrijft: "Na Amerika wordt Microsoft nu ook in Europa aangeklaagd voor het misbruiken van haar machtspositie op het gebied van besturingssystemen. De zaak tegen Microsoft wordt geopend na een klacht van Sun Microsystems. Het bedrijf heeft twee maanden de tijd gekregen om te antwoorden op de aanklacht. Er wordt geen uitspraak verwacht voor het einde van het jaar."

Volgens Sun heeft Microsoft de Europese anti-trustwet overtreden door zich bezig te houden met discriminatie bij het geven van licenties en te weigeren belangrijke informatie m.b.t. Windows te verstrekken:

The European Union opened an antitrust case against Microsoft today, claiming it is abusing its market position in computer operating systems software to dominate the market.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said its action followed a complaint from software rival Sun Microsystems. Microsoft breached EU antitrust rules by engaging in discriminatory licensing and refusing to supply essential information on its Windows operating system, Sun said.

The EU has given Microsoft two months to reply to its case, and any formal decision is unlikely by the end of the year, said Amelia Torres, spokeswoman for EU Competition Commissioner Mario Monti.

Bij HardOCP hebben ze een review van de Abit KT7 geschreven. Opvallend aan de KT7 is dat er geen jumpers op het mobo zitten, en dat de multiplier-lock zonder dipswitches kan worden gekraakt. Ook het overklokken ging heel goed, een Duron 700 liep 100% stabiel op 950 MHz met het voltage op 1,75V. De 1 GHz sample van de T-bird liep stabiel op 1150 MHz. Ook kent de KT7 in tegenstelling tot sommige andere moederborden van Abit geen stabiliteitsproblemen.

This board is certainly one of the best mainboards that ABIT has ever put out if not possibly the best. I am glad to see ABIT rise to the top once again, especially with the competition being much more stringent this last year. Coming out on top is surely not as easy as it used to be. Now we have still yet to see many of the Socket A mainboards from other companies, but outside giving away a free six-pack of good German beer with every purchase, the competition is going to have a tough time selling around the ABIT KT7.

The KT7's feature set is rich but not burdened with crap that OverClockers find useless. The engineer that designed the board actually put some thought into the component layout and we know how often that is overlooked. This is very much a "Return to Roots" board for ABIT. Think about it, this is very much like the IT5H all over again. Except of course we now have 150 FSBs, ATA100 RAID, CPU speeds above 150MHz. You know, now that I look at it, it is not a "Return to Roots" at all. Actually the only thing closely familiar is the ability to change the multiplier. Still I get that feeling of excitement about this board.

It seems as if the KT7 will provide a solid upgrade path also, with the way ABIT has implemented the 3 Phase power issue. This is certainly going to be a selling point.

Overall, the KT7 is a great mainboard with little or nothing holding it back from becoming the best selling Socket A board of the year. Just hope they can make enough....

Pantagruel, bedankt voor het submitten!

Ene meneer Lars Goddel van Forrester Research is tot de conclusie gekomen dat breedbandinternet in de komende jaren steeds meer gebruikt zal gaan worden. Op zich iets wat we zelf ook al wel bedacht hadden. Interessanter zijn de percentages die het bedrijf uitgerekend heeft. Over vijf jaar zal in Nederland volgens hen 28% van de huishoudens een breedband-internetverbinding hebben. Ik denk zelf dat dit iets aan de hoge kant geschat is, maar we zullen het wel zien:

Breedband-internet wacht een glorieuze toekomst, zo denkt het Amerikaanse onderzoeksbureau Forrester Research. Het aantal aansluitingen zal explosief groeien.

Momenteel heeft maar 0,2 procent van de Europese huishoudens een breedband-internetverbinding, maar dat percentage zal exploderen naar 18 procent in 2005. Over vijf jaar zijn dan 27 miljoen huishoudens aangesloten op internet via een supersnelle verbinding.

Die opmars van breedband-internet zal grote gevolgen hebben voor de huidige internetaanbieders, zo denkt onderzoeker Lars Goddel. Om breedband-internet te kunnen aanbieden zijn een goede infrastructuur en - vooral - heel veel geld nodig.

Breedband zal volgens Goddel het eerst doorbreken in Scandinavië, waar 40 procent van de huishoudens over vijf jaar over een snelle verbinding beschikt. Nederland komt op de tweede plaats met 28 procent, vooral omdat Goddel hier een felle strijd verwacht tussen de kabelbedrijven en KPN, dat met ADSL op de markt komt.

Slecht nieuws voor degenen onder ons die wel eens warez (illegale software) downloaden, maar dat doet toch niemand ? Microsoft heeft namelijk een zoektool die dag en nacht het internet afzoekt naar sites die in strijd zijn met de wet. Aan welke criteria een site moet voldoen om als illegaal bestempeld te worden heeft Microsoft nog niet bekend gemaakt:

Microsoft has gone into battle against software piracy armed with a new Web searching tool that scans sites for evidence of pirated goods being offered for sale.

The new technology will be monitoring the Web 24 hours a day. By automating the routine and time-consuming parts of the job, Microsoft reckons that it will identify thousands of illegal sites every day. Already there have been 64 criminal raids and 17 civil lawsuits in 15 countries resulting from Microsoft's anti-piracy efforts.

"The Internet is creating a fascinating global marketplace," said anti-piracy manager Diana Piquette. "But it is also bringing numerous risks that we want retailers and honest sellers to look out for."
